Hi! Welcome back to Make Thrift Buy,
-
The show where you, the audience, send me clothes from the internet
-
and I try my best to recreate them. Today's
challenge was suggested by Jodie Yeap
-
who sent me a picture of these "Black White Plaid Asymmetrical Hem Skort... Shorts."
-
That is like the worst product description of all time.
-
Anyway, I thought these "skorts"would be an interesting thing to try and recreate, they're like
-
an asymmetrical skirt at the front, and shorts at the back.
-
So, let's get started! So today I was unusually prepared
-
and I decided to make pattern before I
started sewing. So the pattern looks like this.
-
you've got a shorts, the waistband and some panels for the asymmetrical skirt bit at the front.
-
Then I got to work - drawing up and cutting my pattern pieces out.
-
I placed my cut out pattern pieces onto the fabric,
-
this gingham, polyester/cotton blend, and I
cut out all the pieces.
-
So I cut out the shorts piece on the fold of the fabric, and I ended up with TWO pieces
-
that look like this. I sandwiched them right-sides-together,
-
pinned them together to hold the fabric in place, and then I sewed down the sides
-
just like this. I'm only doing temporary basting stitches here,
-
because this will become the back of the shorts, and we will need to add a zipper here
-
later on. I also overlocked all the raw
edges to stop them from fraying, but
-
this is a necessary step. If you don't
have an overlocker,
-
a cheaper option is to buy these kind of scissors - they're called "pinking shears"
-
and to use them on all the raw edges. Next, while the shorts were inside-out, I folded up
-
the bottom edges one-inch
-
Pinned this,
-
and sewed across like this. Now comes the fun bit!
-
Flip the shots around so that the seam
is in the middle and - BAM!
-
like magic, they start looking like shorts!
Then I pinned
-
and sewed the crotch together just like this.
-
Then I thought it would be a good idea to try the shorts on,
-
You know, just in case the pattern didn't work, so I first removed the basting stitches
-
at the back and then I tried to put them
on. Okay, so
-
they are a little bit tight, especially around
the legs, but I can still get them on, so
-
it's totally fine...
-
I mean I can still... yep.
-
that's probably gonna be a problem. Yeah, my butt totally doesn't fit
-
these shorts.
-
So this pattern... sucks.
-
Don't use it. So instead, I'm going to do the "cheats method"of making shorts.
-
where you take a pair of shorts that fits you really well, turn them inside out,
-
Fold them in half, and... hang on.
-
These are pretty much exactly the same size as my pattern piece. Adding seam allowances,
-
The two would be exactly the same size.
-
Alright, I don't know what happened, and shorts scare me, so I'm basically
-
just going to make my pattern piece
-
much much much bigger and start again.
-
And then I'm just repeating all those shorts-making-steps that I did... again.
-
So, cutting out the fabric, placing the fabric
-
right-sides together...
-
And... here's my massive pair of shorts!
-
Alright, so they're a little big, but this is
actually okay!
-
This is what I wanted! Because now I'm
gonna put them on inside out,
-
and then I'm going to pin down the sides here
to make the shorts fit me
-
then I'm going to draw a line where I put the pins, and then cut down the sides like this.
-
So I cut it, and I unfolded it, and they
look something like this:
-
Then I overlocked the raw edges to stop fraying. So now I can add
-
my asymmetrical bits - those front
pieces. Okay, so
-
for some reason these front pieces are too short.
-
I don't really know why this didn't work out,
but nothing really seems to be working
-
today!
-
Anyway so I now have to extend this piece so it covers the entire front section of the
-
shorts
-
so I cut out two of these. And so I end up
with these four pieces for the
-
front panel. I place them right sides together,
-
pin them together, and sew around these
edges, leaving the top
-
edge open.
-
then I turn these pieces inside-out, I give them a good iron,
-
and I top-stitch over the edges. Then I place these two pieces onto the front of
-
my shorts, just like in the picture, and I sew them on at the top.
-
Then, I the back of the shorts onto the front,
-
right-sides together, and sew down
the sides to reattach the shorts.
-
And we're getting somewhere.
-
okay, so I'm almost there, now I just have to
attach the waistband
-
So this is the only pattern piece that seems to have held up so far.
-
I fold the waistband in half
lengthways
-
and I sew down the length of it, and
then I turn the tube that I have made inside-out,
-
I attach this to the front of the shorts
-
right sides together, and then I sew all
the way around
-
the top edge like this. So now I just have to add a zipper.
-
So I stitched together this slit on the
back of the shorts using a temporary
-
basting stitch, right sides together, and
then i press this seam apart.
-
And I put a zipper directly in the
middle so that the zipper teeth align
-
up with the seam. Then I sew the zipper on,
making sure I'm catching
-
the fabric in the seam allowance
underneath just like this.
-
To bust the zipper out of there,
-
I just cut through the basting stitches
and the zipper is now free
-
and functional. So now the real question
is:
-
how did they end up? Did they work? More importantly,
-
Did they fit?
-
Well, we got there in the end. I'm friggin' proud of myself, actually.
-
This just shows if you stuff up once, just keep persevering, coz it might just work...
-
and then you feel really, really, really good about yourself! Anyway, if you'd
