0:00:00.060,0:00:05.600 Hi! Welcome back to Make Thrift Buy, 0:00:05.600,0:00:08.750 The show where you, the audience, send me clothes from the internet 0:00:08.750,0:00:13.009 and I try my best to recreate them. Today's[br]challenge was suggested by Jodie Yeap 0:00:13.009,0:00:17.100 who sent me a picture of these "Black White Plaid Asymmetrical Hem Skort... Shorts." 0:00:17.100,0:00:22.269 That is like the worst product description of all time. 0:00:22.269,0:00:26.029 Anyway, I thought these "skorts"would be an interesting thing to try and recreate, they're like 0:00:26.029,0:00:29.840 an asymmetrical skirt at the front, and shorts at the back. 0:00:29.840,0:00:33.130 So, let's get started! So today I was unusually prepared 0:00:33.130,0:00:37.260 and I decided to make pattern before I[br]started sewing. So the pattern looks like this. 0:00:37.260,0:00:41.980 you've got a shorts, the waistband and some panels for the asymmetrical skirt bit at the front. 0:00:41.980,0:00:44.200 Then I got to work - drawing up and cutting my pattern pieces out. 0:00:44.200,0:00:51.200 I placed my cut out pattern pieces onto the fabric, 0:00:53.640,0:00:57.140 this gingham, polyester/cotton blend, and I[br]cut out all the pieces. 0:00:57.140,0:01:01.879 So I cut out the shorts piece on the fold of the fabric, and I ended up with TWO pieces 0:01:01.879,0:01:05.369 that look like this. I sandwiched them right-sides-together, 0:01:05.369,0:01:08.810 pinned them together to hold the fabric in place, and then I sewed down the sides 0:01:08.810,0:01:12.240 just like this. I'm only doing temporary basting stitches here, 0:01:12.240,0:01:16.070 because this will become the back of the shorts, and we will need to add a zipper here 0:01:16.070,0:01:20.590 later on. I also overlocked all the raw[br]edges to stop them from fraying, but 0:01:20.590,0:01:24.159 this is a necessary step. If you don't[br]have an overlocker, 0:01:24.159,0:01:27.570 a cheaper option is to buy these kind of scissors - they're called "pinking shears" 0:01:27.570,0:01:33.259 and to use them on all the raw edges. Next, while the shorts were inside-out, I folded up 0:01:33.259,0:01:34.750 the bottom edges one-inch 0:01:34.750,0:01:38.670 Pinned this, 0:01:38.670,0:01:44.649 and sewed across like this. Now comes the fun bit! 0:01:44.649,0:01:48.429 Flip the shots around so that the seam[br]is in the middle and - BAM! 0:01:48.429,0:01:52.229 like magic, they start looking like shorts![br]Then I pinned 0:01:52.229,0:01:56.369 and sewed the crotch together just like this. 0:01:56.369,0:01:57.600 Then I thought it would be a good idea to try the shorts on, 0:01:57.600,0:02:01.770 You know, just in case the pattern didn't work, so I first removed the basting stitches 0:02:01.770,0:02:06.100 at the back and then I tried to put them[br]on. Okay, so 0:02:06.100,0:02:09.700 they are a little bit tight, especially around[br]the legs, but I can still get them on, so 0:02:09.700,0:02:11.599 it's totally fine... 0:02:11.599,0:02:16.060 I mean I can still... yep. 0:02:16.060,0:02:21.319 that's probably gonna be a problem. Yeah, my butt totally doesn't fit 0:02:21.319,0:02:21.829 these shorts. 0:02:21.829,0:02:24.950 So this pattern... sucks. 0:02:24.950,0:02:29.530 Don't use it. So instead, I'm going to do the "cheats method"of making shorts. 0:02:29.530,0:02:32.849 where you take a pair of shorts that fits you really well, turn them inside out, 0:02:32.849,0:02:36.030 Fold them in half, and... hang on. 0:02:36.030,0:02:40.260 These are pretty much exactly the same size as my pattern piece. Adding seam allowances, 0:02:40.260,0:02:42.030 The two would be exactly the same size. 0:02:42.030,0:02:46.230 Alright, I don't know what happened, and shorts scare me, so I'm basically 0:02:46.230,0:02:47.989 just going to make my pattern piece 0:02:47.989,0:02:51.410 much much much bigger and start again. 0:02:51.410,0:02:58.030 And then I'm just repeating all those shorts-making-steps that I did... again. 0:02:58.030,0:03:01.430 So, cutting out the fabric, placing the fabric 0:03:01.430,0:03:01.989 right-sides together... 0:03:01.989,0:03:06.459 And... here's my massive pair of shorts! 0:03:06.459,0:03:10.069 Alright, so they're a little big, but this is[br]actually okay! 0:03:10.069,0:03:13.410 This is what I wanted! Because now I'm[br]gonna put them on inside out, 0:03:13.410,0:03:16.760 and then I'm going to pin down the sides here[br]to make the shorts fit me 0:03:16.760,0:03:22.239 then I'm going to draw a line where I put the pins, and then cut down the sides like this. 0:03:22.239,0:03:27.130 So I cut it, and I unfolded it, and they[br]look something like this: 0:03:27.130,0:03:30.459 Then I overlocked the raw edges to stop fraying. So now I can add 0:03:30.459,0:03:34.560 my asymmetrical bits - those front[br]pieces. Okay, so 0:03:34.560,0:03:38.750 for some reason these front pieces are too short. 0:03:38.750,0:03:41.740 I don't really know why this didn't work out,[br]but nothing really seems to be working 0:03:41.740,0:03:42.250 today! 0:03:42.250,0:03:46.220 Anyway so I now have to extend this piece so it covers the entire front section of the 0:03:46.220,0:03:46.780 shorts 0:03:46.780,0:03:52.550 so I cut out two of these. And so I end up[br]with these four pieces for the 0:03:52.550,0:03:55.660 front panel. I place them right sides together, 0:03:55.660,0:03:59.410 pin them together, and sew around these[br]edges, leaving the top 0:03:59.410,0:04:02.790 edge open. 0:04:02.790,0:04:06.870 then I turn these pieces inside-out, I give them a good iron, 0:04:06.870,0:04:11.390 and I top-stitch over the edges. Then I place these two pieces onto the front of 0:04:11.390,0:04:14.650 my shorts, just like in the picture, and I sew them on at the top. 0:04:14.650,0:04:19.260 Then, I the back of the shorts onto the front, 0:04:19.260,0:04:24.160 right-sides together, and sew down[br]the sides to reattach the shorts. 0:04:24.160,0:04:28.290 And we're getting somewhere. 0:04:28.290,0:04:31.890 okay, so I'm almost there, now I just have to[br]attach the waistband 0:04:31.890,0:04:35.200 So this is the only pattern piece that seems to have held up so far. 0:04:35.200,0:04:38.230 I fold the waistband in half[br]lengthways 0:04:38.230,0:04:43.790 and I sew down the length of it, and[br]then I turn the tube that I have made inside-out, 0:04:43.790,0:04:45.760 I attach this to the front of the shorts 0:04:45.760,0:04:49.120 right sides together, and then I sew all[br]the way around 0:04:49.120,0:04:55.270 the top edge like this. So now I just have to add a zipper. 0:04:55.270,0:04:59.440 So I stitched together this slit on the[br]back of the shorts using a temporary 0:04:59.440,0:05:03.380 basting stitch, right sides together, and[br]then i press this seam apart. 0:05:03.380,0:05:08.000 And I put a zipper directly in the[br]middle so that the zipper teeth align 0:05:08.000,0:05:12.330 up with the seam. Then I sew the zipper on,[br]making sure I'm catching 0:05:12.330,0:05:19.330 the fabric in the seam allowance[br]underneath just like this. 0:05:22.320,0:05:23.650 To bust the zipper out of there, 0:05:23.650,0:05:30.490 I just cut through the basting stitches[br]and the zipper is now free 0:05:30.490,0:05:33.550 and functional. So now the real question[br]is: 0:05:33.550,0:05:37.400 how did they end up? Did they work? More importantly, 0:05:37.400,0:05:44.030 Did they fit? 0:05:59.720,0:06:06.900 Well, we got there in the end. I'm friggin' proud of myself, actually. 0:06:06.900,0:06:12.190 This just shows if you stuff up once, just keep persevering, coz it might just work... 0:06:12.190,0:06:15.509 and then you feel really, really, really good about yourself!
