WEBVTT 00:00:00.060 --> 00:00:05.600 Hi! Welcome back to Make Thrift Buy, 00:00:05.600 --> 00:00:08.750 The show where you, the audience, send me clothes from the internet 00:00:08.750 --> 00:00:13.009 and I try my best to recreate them. Today's challenge was suggested by Jodie Yeap 00:00:13.009 --> 00:00:17.100 who sent me a picture of these "Black White Plaid Asymmetrical Hem Skort... Shorts." 00:00:17.100 --> 00:00:22.269 That is like the worst product description of all time. 00:00:22.269 --> 00:00:26.029 Anyway, I thought these "skorts"would be an interesting thing to try and recreate, they're like 00:00:26.029 --> 00:00:29.840 an asymmetrical skirt at the front, and shorts at the back. 00:00:29.840 --> 00:00:33.130 So, let's get started! So today I was unusually prepared 00:00:33.130 --> 00:00:37.260 and I decided to make pattern before I started sewing. So the pattern looks like this. 00:00:37.260 --> 00:00:41.980 you've got a shorts, the waistband and some panels for the asymmetrical skirt bit at the front. 00:00:41.980 --> 00:00:44.200 Then I got to work - drawing up and cutting my pattern pieces out. 00:00:44.200 --> 00:00:51.200 I placed my cut out pattern pieces onto the fabric, 00:00:53.640 --> 00:00:57.140 this gingham, polyester/cotton blend, and I cut out all the pieces. 00:00:57.140 --> 00:01:01.879 So I cut out the shorts piece on the fold of the fabric, and I ended up with TWO pieces 00:01:01.879 --> 00:01:05.369 that look like this. I sandwiched them right-sides-together, 00:01:05.369 --> 00:01:08.810 pinned them together to hold the fabric in place, and then I sewed down the sides 00:01:08.810 --> 00:01:12.240 just like this. I'm only doing temporary basting stitches here, 00:01:12.240 --> 00:01:16.070 because this will become the back of the shorts, and we will need to add a zipper here 00:01:16.070 --> 00:01:20.590 later on. I also overlocked all the raw edges to stop them from fraying, but 00:01:20.590 --> 00:01:24.159 this is a necessary step. If you don't have an overlocker, 00:01:24.159 --> 00:01:27.570 a cheaper option is to buy these kind of scissors - they're called "pinking shears" 00:01:27.570 --> 00:01:33.259 and to use them on all the raw edges. Next, while the shorts were inside-out, I folded up 00:01:33.259 --> 00:01:34.750 the bottom edges one-inch 00:01:34.750 --> 00:01:38.670 Pinned this, 00:01:38.670 --> 00:01:44.649 and sewed across like this. Now comes the fun bit! 00:01:44.649 --> 00:01:48.429 Flip the shots around so that the seam is in the middle and - BAM! 00:01:48.429 --> 00:01:52.229 like magic, they start looking like shorts! Then I pinned 00:01:52.229 --> 00:01:56.369 and sewed the crotch together just like this. 00:01:56.369 --> 00:01:57.600 Then I thought it would be a good idea to try the shorts on, 00:01:57.600 --> 00:02:01.770 You know, just in case the pattern didn't work, so I first removed the basting stitches 00:02:01.770 --> 00:02:06.100 at the back and then I tried to put them on. Okay, so 00:02:06.100 --> 00:02:09.700 they are a little bit tight, especially around the legs, but I can still get them on, so 00:02:09.700 --> 00:02:11.599 it's totally fine... 00:02:11.599 --> 00:02:16.060 I mean I can still... yep. 00:02:16.060 --> 00:02:21.319 that's probably gonna be a problem. Yeah, my butt totally doesn't fit 00:02:21.319 --> 00:02:21.829 these shorts. 00:02:21.829 --> 00:02:24.950 So this pattern... sucks. 00:02:24.950 --> 00:02:29.530 Don't use it. So instead, I'm going to do the "cheats method"of making shorts. 00:02:29.530 --> 00:02:32.849 where you take a pair of shorts that fits you really well, turn them inside out, 00:02:32.849 --> 00:02:36.030 Fold them in half, and... hang on. 00:02:36.030 --> 00:02:40.260 These are pretty much exactly the same size as my pattern piece. Adding seam allowances, 00:02:40.260 --> 00:02:42.030 The two would be exactly the same size. 00:02:42.030 --> 00:02:46.230 Alright, I don't know what happened, and shorts scare me, so I'm basically 00:02:46.230 --> 00:02:47.989 just going to make my pattern piece 00:02:47.989 --> 00:02:51.410 much much much bigger and start again. 00:02:51.410 --> 00:02:58.030 And then I'm just repeating all those shorts-making-steps that I did... again. 00:02:58.030 --> 00:03:01.430 So, cutting out the fabric, placing the fabric 00:03:01.430 --> 00:03:01.989 right-sides together... 00:03:01.989 --> 00:03:06.459 And... here's my massive pair of shorts! 00:03:06.459 --> 00:03:10.069 Alright, so they're a little big, but this is actually okay! 00:03:10.069 --> 00:03:13.410 This is what I wanted! Because now I'm gonna put them on inside out, 00:03:13.410 --> 00:03:16.760 and then I'm going to pin down the sides here to make the shorts fit me 00:03:16.760 --> 00:03:22.239 then I'm going to draw a line where I put the pins, and then cut down the sides like this. 00:03:22.239 --> 00:03:27.130 So I cut it, and I unfolded it, and they look something like this: 00:03:27.130 --> 00:03:30.459 Then I overlocked the raw edges to stop fraying. So now I can add 00:03:30.459 --> 00:03:34.560 my asymmetrical bits - those front pieces. Okay, so 00:03:34.560 --> 00:03:38.750 for some reason these front pieces are too short. 00:03:38.750 --> 00:03:41.740 I don't really know why this didn't work out, but nothing really seems to be working 00:03:41.740 --> 00:03:42.250 today! 00:03:42.250 --> 00:03:46.220 Anyway so I now have to extend this piece so it covers the entire front section of the 00:03:46.220 --> 00:03:46.780 shorts 00:03:46.780 --> 00:03:52.550 so I cut out two of these. And so I end up with these four pieces for the 00:03:52.550 --> 00:03:55.660 front panel. I place them right sides together, 00:03:55.660 --> 00:03:59.410 pin them together, and sew around these edges, leaving the top 00:03:59.410 --> 00:04:02.790 edge open. 00:04:02.790 --> 00:04:06.870 then I turn these pieces inside-out, I give them a good iron, 00:04:06.870 --> 00:04:11.390 and I top-stitch over the edges. Then I place these two pieces onto the front of 00:04:11.390 --> 00:04:14.650 my shorts, just like in the picture, and I sew them on at the top. 00:04:14.650 --> 00:04:19.260 Then, I the back of the shorts onto the front, 00:04:19.260 --> 00:04:24.160 right-sides together, and sew down the sides to reattach the shorts. 00:04:24.160 --> 00:04:28.290 And we're getting somewhere. 00:04:28.290 --> 00:04:31.890 okay, so I'm almost there, now I just have to attach the waistband 00:04:31.890 --> 00:04:35.200 So this is the only pattern piece that seems to have held up so far. 00:04:35.200 --> 00:04:38.230 I fold the waistband in half lengthways 00:04:38.230 --> 00:04:43.790 and I sew down the length of it, and then I turn the tube that I have made inside-out, 00:04:43.790 --> 00:04:45.760 I attach this to the front of the shorts 00:04:45.760 --> 00:04:49.120 right sides together, and then I sew all the way around 00:04:49.120 --> 00:04:55.270 the top edge like this. So now I just have to add a zipper. 00:04:55.270 --> 00:04:59.440 So I stitched together this slit on the back of the shorts using a temporary 00:04:59.440 --> 00:05:03.380 basting stitch, right sides together, and then i press this seam apart. 00:05:03.380 --> 00:05:08.000 And I put a zipper directly in the middle so that the zipper teeth align 00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:12.330 up with the seam. Then I sew the zipper on, making sure I'm catching 00:05:12.330 --> 00:05:19.330 the fabric in the seam allowance underneath just like this. 00:05:22.320 --> 00:05:23.650 To bust the zipper out of there, 00:05:23.650 --> 00:05:30.490 I just cut through the basting stitches and the zipper is now free 00:05:30.490 --> 00:05:33.550 and functional. So now the real question is: 00:05:33.550 --> 00:05:37.400 how did they end up? Did they work? More importantly, 00:05:37.400 --> 00:05:44.030 Did they fit? 00:05:59.720 --> 00:06:06.900 Well, we got there in the end. I'm friggin' proud of myself, actually. 00:06:06.900 --> 00:06:12.190 This just shows if you stuff up once, just keep persevering, coz it might just work... 00:06:12.190 --> 00:06:15.509 and then you feel really, really, really good about yourself!
