The importance of subtitles

  • 0:00 - 0:00
    [for Amara.org]
    [and for EurOpinion.is]
  • 0:01 - 0:04
    Helloo...
    my name is Riccardo.
  • 0:06 - 0:13
And I just received an email
    about the "International Translation Day"...
  • 0:13 - 0:20
and I do want to support it,
    as kindly requested:
  • 0:21 - 0:25
    "raise awareness about their importance"
    (subtitles)
  • 0:26 - 0:32
    The importance of subtitles,
    and with it...
  • 0:32 - 0:38
    for a wider global public...
  • 0:38 - 0:45
    well, important documentaries
    or messages (knowledge, wisdom...)
  • 0:45 - 0:50
    to make that available.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
I do think that is very important.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
And when I saw that videos were suggested
    as an option, I thought:
  • 0:57 - 1:05
"What better than a video in Dutch
    and then subtitled in English..."
  • 1:05 - 1:07
[instead of always the other way around ;)]
  • 1:08 - 1:13
because I think that, amongst other,
  • 1:14 - 1:20
    the distribution of languages
should be supported as much as possible!
  • 1:22 - 1:31
    And that everybody should, actually,
always start in their original language....
  • 1:32 - 1:35
and then, if necessary, subtitle it.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    My personal story...
  • 1:38 - 1:45
I was born in Italy, in Milan.
    My father is Italian.
  • 1:46 - 1:50
But I grew up in Holland,
    from my fourth year on.
  • 1:50 - 1:55
    My mother is Dutch,
although she was born in Indonesia.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
And so, from my youngest years,
  • 1:57 - 2:01
    I have had the privilege,
to manage more than one langauge.
  • 2:01 - 2:05
It is enriching! You grow from it.
    Other languages... Other cultures...
  • 2:07 - 2:12
With, additionally, what we have here in Holland,
    the fact that at school...
  • 2:14 - 2:22
you also learn the other 'great' languages
that surround us: German, French and English...
  • 2:22 - 2:26
with another advantage on top of that,
    -yet another privilege-
  • 2:26 - 2:31
that here in Holland, just like in
    Scandinavia or Portugal,
  • 2:32 - 2:36
    everything on tv or movie...
  • 2:36 - 2:40
    is SUB-TI-TLED
  • 2:40 - 2:42
so you can HEAR the other language!
  • 2:42 - 2:46
    Not like other countries
    where they are being dubbed
  • 2:46 - 2:50
    which makes you loose
the richness of the original language.
  • 2:50 - 2:56
Just by hearing the other language
you get to know the other culture...
  • 2:56 - 3:00
at least in a certain way.
    [and thus, understand it better]
  • 3:00 - 3:04
And you loose that by dubbing.
  • 3:04 - 3:07
    HERE is where I see
    an important role of subtitling.
  • 3:07 - 3:13
    ...not dubbing
    as do most 'great' nations,
  • 3:13 - 3:22
the great powers of Europa, you know
    France, Germany, Italy, Spain...
  • 3:22 - 3:27
There, on your TV, you hardly hear...
  • 3:28 - 3:31
    you don't hear anything else
    but your own language...
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    that is a limitation.
  • 3:36 - 3:44
I think it is a HUGE loss
    for the distribution and richness...
  • 3:44 - 3:49
of languages and thus culture as well,
    because they are closely linked.
  • 3:49 - 3:54
    So that's why "subtitling"...
  • 3:55 - 3:59
I feel a great appreciation for it!
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    And I was very happy...
  • 4:07 - 4:11
when I happened to bump into Amara.
    (subtitling service - NON-profit!)
  • 4:11 - 4:15
    I learned a lot through
the work I have done for Amara...
  • 4:15 - 4:22
and now I am continuing it
    for my own project.
  • 4:22 - 4:26
    well... let's say,
in the interest of Europa :)
  • 4:26 - 4:31
I think Europa is THE continent where...
  • 4:31 - 4:35
    subtitling still has to
    play an important role.
  • 4:36 - 4:41
    Well... Humanity...
In the end, what it's all about...
  • 4:43 - 4:47
    is SHARING!
    and understand each other.
  • 4:48 - 4:53
    And to understand each other
    communication is used...
  • 4:55 - 4:59
    and that communication...
when it is in different langauges...
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    you need translations!
  • 5:06 - 5:07
    Subtitling...
  • 5:07 - 5:08
    Ik think that...
  • 5:09 - 5:14
    yeah, the exchange of languages
is also an exchange of culture.
  • 5:14 - 5:19
    It is my conviction,
that simply everything that exists on film...
  • 5:19 - 5:26
    should be subtitled,
to all (other) languages that exist.
  • 5:26 - 5:32
    Considering that the priority
and the importance actually lies with...
  • 5:33 - 5:40
    those languages
of which there is little 'left'...
  • 5:40 - 5:44
    due to the 'internationalization'
    and well...
  • 5:44 - 5:50
    let's say after...
    the 'globalization' after colonialism.
  • 5:50 - 5:53
I think that precisely the languages
  • 5:53 - 5:59
    that are least spoken
    and least known...
  • 5:59 - 6:07
    most should be
    translated TO and FROM,
  • 6:07 - 6:13
    to safe guard that language
    and the corresponding culture...
  • 6:15 - 6:19
    and with it also the
    "Culturo-Diversity" in the world.
  • 6:19 - 6:27
    Culturo-Diversity
    for global human society...
  • 6:27 - 6:35
    is just as important as
Bio-Diversity for nature and our planet.
  • 6:35 - 6:45
    I think that the exchange
of languages and culture is essential.
  • 6:45 - 6:49
I try to work on that myself
    for Europa,
  • 6:49 - 6:53
where, of course, you have a high concentration
of a variety of languages and cultures.
  • 6:53 - 7:00
    which I think SHOULD be
    the strenght of Europa...
  • 7:01 - 7:05
    while all great forces
    seem to make efforts...
  • 7:05 - 7:09
to turn Europa into some kind of
    (industrial and homogeneous) amorphous CHEESE.
  • 7:09 - 7:16
This would be a deterioration of Europa,
so it must be fought against! :p
  • 7:19 - 7:24
To be able to exchange between
    the different cultures and languages...
  • 7:24 - 7:32
    requires translators and subtitlers
    as fundamental elements.
  • 7:33 - 7:36
    I think that MORE,
    much more should be done...
  • 7:36 - 7:39
than what is being done now.
  • 7:39 - 7:41
    I think this adds...
  • 7:41 - 7:45
be it to a better Europa ♥
be it to a better World!
  • 7:45 - 7:48
And as I said, I am still thankful...
  • 7:48 - 7:50
to have been able to learn this
    through Amara...
  • 7:50 - 7:54
as well as the use of the infrastructure.
  • 7:57 - 8:03
I think this is long enough now,
    so: hasta la vista! ;)
  • 8:03 - 8:04
    (subs other languages, welcome! :)
