How we unearthed the spinosaurus

  • Not Synced
    These dragons from deep-time
    are incredible creatures.
  • Not Synced
    They're bizzarre,
  • Not Synced
    they're beautiful,
  • Not Synced
    and there's very little
    we know about them.
  • Not Synced
    These thoughts were going
    through my head
  • Not Synced
when I looked at the pages of
    my first dinosaur book.
  • Not Synced
I was about 5-years-old at the time,
  • Not Synced
and I decided there and then
  • Not Synced
that I would become a paleontologist.
  • Not Synced
    Paleontology allowed me
to combine my love for animals
  • Not Synced
with my desire to travel to
    far-flung corners of the world.
  • Not Synced
And now, a few years later,
  • Not Synced
    I've led several expeditions
    to the ultimate far-flung
  • Not Synced
    corner on this planet,
  • Not Synced
    the Sahara.
  • Not Synced
I've worked in the Sahara because
    I've been on a quest
  • Not Synced
    to uncover new remains
  • Not Synced
of a bizarre, giant predatory dinosaur
  • Not Synced
    called Spinosaurus.
  • Not Synced
A few bones of this animal
    have been found
  • Not Synced
    in the deserts of Egypt
  • Not Synced
and were described about 100 years ago
  • Not Synced
    by a German paleontologist.
  • Not Synced
    Unfortunately, all his Spinosaurus
    bones were destroyed in WWII.
  • Not Synced
So all we're left with are just
    a few drawings and notes.
  • Not Synced
    Fromthese drawings,
  • Not Synced
    we know that this creature,
  • Not Synced
which lived about 100 million years ago,
  • Not Synced
was very big, it had tall spines
    on its back,
  • Not Synced
    forming a magnificent sail,
  • Not Synced
and it had long, slender jaws,
  • Not Synced
    a bit like a crocodile,
  • Not Synced
    with conical teeth,
  • Not Synced
that may have been used to catch
    slippery prey, like fish.
  • Not Synced
    But that was pretty much
    all we know
  • Not Synced
about this animal for the next 100 years.
  • Not Synced
My fieldwork took me to the
    border region
  • Not Synced
    between Morocco and Algeria,
  • Not Synced
a place called the Kem Kem.
  • Not Synced
It's a difficult place to work in.
  • Not Synced
You have to deal with sandstorms,
    and snakes and scorpians,
  • Not Synced
and it's very difficult to find
    good fossils there.
  • Not Synced
    But our handwork paid off.
  • Not Synced
    We discovered many incredible specimens.
  • Not Synced
The largest dinosaur bone that had
    ever been found
  • Not Synced
in this part of the Sahara.
  • Not Synced
    We found remains of giant
    predetory dinosaurs,
  • Not Synced
    medium sized predatory dinosaurs,
  • Not Synced
and seven or eight crocodile-like hunters.
  • Not Synced
These fossils were deposited in a river system.
  • Not Synced
The river system was also home
    to a giant, car-sized celocant.
  • Not Synced
And the skies over the river-system
    were filled with terosaurs,
  • Not Synced
    flying reptiles.
  • Not Synced
It was a pretty dangerous place,
  • Not Synced
not the kind of place you'd want
    to travel to
  • Not Synced
if you had a time machine.
  • Not Synced
So we're finding all these incredible
    fossils of animals
  • Not Synced
    that lived alongside Spinosaurus,
  • Not Synced
    but Spinosaurus itself proved
    to be very elusive.
  • Not Synced
We were just finding bits and pieces
  • Not Synced
and I was hoping that we'd find
a partial skelaton at some point.
  • Not Synced
    Finally, very recently,
  • Not Synced
we were able to track down a dig site
  • Not Synced
where a local fossil hunter found
    several bones of Spinosaurus.
  • Not Synced
    We returned to the site,
  • Not Synced
    we collected more bones,
  • Not Synced
    and so after 100 years
  • Not Synced
we finally had another partial skeleton
  • Not Synced
    of this bizarre creature.
  • Not Synced
And we were able to reconstruct it.
  • Not Synced
    We now know that Spinosaurs
    had a head
  • Not Synced
a little bit like a crocodile,
  • Not Synced
    very different from other
    predatory dinosaurs,
  • Not Synced
    very different from the T-Rex.
  • Not Synced
    But the really interesting information
came from the rest of the skeleton.
  • Not Synced
    We had long spines,
  • Not Synced
the spines forming the big sail.
  • Not Synced
We had leg bones, we had skull bones,
  • Not Synced
    we had paddle shaped feet,
  • Not Synced
    very wide feet,
  • Not Synced
    again, very unusual,
  • Not Synced
no other dinosaur has feet like this,
  • Not Synced
and we think these may have been
used to walk on soft sediment,
  • Not Synced
or maybe for paddling in the water.
  • Not Synced
We also looked at the fine, microstructure
    of the bone.
  • Not Synced
The inside structure of Spinosaurus bone
  • Not Synced
-- it turns out that they're very dense
    and compact.
  • Not Synced
And again, this is something we see
  • Not Synced
in animals that spend a lot of time in the water,
  • Not Synced
it's useful for buoyancy control in the water.
  • Not Synced
We CT scanned all of our bones
and built a digital Spinosaurus skeleton.
  • Not Synced
And we looked at the digital skeleton,
  • Not Synced
we realized, that yes, this was a dinosaur
    unlike any other.
  • Not Synced
    It's bigger than a T-rex, and yes,
  • Not Synced
the head has "fish-eating" written all over it,
  • Not Synced
but really the entire skeleton has
    "water-loving" written all over it:
  • Not Synced
    dense bone, paddle-like feet,
and the hind limbs are reduced in size,
  • Not Synced
and again, this is something we see
    in animals
  • Not Synced
that spend a substantial amount of time
  • Not Synced
    in the water.
  • Not Synced
So, as we fleshed out our Spinosaurus,
  • Not Synced
    I'm looking at muscle attachments
and wrapping our dinosaur in skin,
  • Not Synced
    we realize that we're dealing
    with a river monster,
  • Not Synced
    a predatory dinosaur, bigger than a T-Rex,
  • Not Synced
the ruler of this ancient river of giants,
  • Not Synced
feeding on the many aquatic animals
    I showed you early on.
  • Not Synced
So this is really what makes this
    an incredible discovery.
  • Not Synced
It's a dinosaur like no other.
  • Not Synced
    And some people told me,
  • Not Synced
"Wow, this is a once in a
