Awakening Mind Part 1, "Know Thyself" (2023) - Complete HD Film

  • 0:09 - 0:11
    Awakening
  • 0:11 - 0:15
    is the next natural stage
    of human development.
  • 0:15 - 0:20
So awakening is simply to recognize
the nature of our essential being.
  • 0:21 - 0:27
    Is not some weird,
    mystical religious experience
  • 0:27 - 0:28
that's only available to the few.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    It's available to everyone.
  • 0:30 - 0:36
    What we essentially are
is already fully awake, fully aware.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    And it's totally unlimited.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    Your true nature is closer
  • 0:41 - 0:45
than the you that you think you are.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    Consciousness
is the ultimate reality of the universe.
  • 0:49 - 0:54
The next step in science is to say
    that consciousness is fundamental.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    What is awakening anyway?
  • 0:56 - 1:01
    Somebody explain that to me.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    What is awakening?
  • 1:27 - 1:32
Whether you call it the true self,
the imminent self or "no self",
  • 1:32 - 1:37
    or Buddha
    nature, Tao or Christ Consciousness,
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    it really doesn't matter.
  • 1:40 - 1:45
    In this film,
we're going to refer to it as awareness.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    Awareness
  • 1:47 - 1:50
is not the property of any religion.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    Awakening or realizing awareness
  • 1:53 - 1:56
is like waking from a dream.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    The dream of your character
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    in the play of life.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    Through our characters,
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    we experience the world
  • 2:06 - 2:10
in all of its beauty and its ugliness.
  • 2:10 - 2:14
We can call this experience of life
    and death duality.
  • 2:15 - 2:20
    Around and around
we go, fixated on the characters,
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    thoughts and sensations.
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    Good and bad.
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    War and peace.
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    Light and darkness.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    Birth and death.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
Until we wake up and find out
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    we are not the character.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    In this film,
    we are extending an invitation
  • 3:06 - 3:10
    for you to directly experience
    your true nature.
  • 3:11 - 3:15
To find out directly, not intellectually...
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    Who are you?
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    We will repeat this
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    invitation in different ways.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
When inquiring into who you are,
  • 3:26 - 3:30
let everything be exactly as it is.
  • 3:30 - 3:34
    Don't
move the mind to make something happen
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    or to find some answer
    on the level of mind.
  • 3:39 - 3:42
And yet, don't try to push away the mind.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    Simply intend to directly experience
    who you are.
  • 3:47 - 3:53
    Letting the mind be a
    "don't know mind"
  • 4:02 - 4:09
Awakening is the answer to all of
the world's problems on every level.
  • 4:09 - 4:14
    All of the world's
    problems stem from a delusion.
  • 4:14 - 4:18
The fundamental delusion of the mind.
  • 4:18 - 4:22
    And that delusion is that
    I am this limited character.
  • 4:23 - 4:26
    When we're living from a
    small, separate self,
  • 4:26 - 4:30
    there's always some kind
    of perpetual dissatisfaction.
  • 4:30 - 4:34
So this can be big dissatisfaction
    like trauma,
  • 4:34 - 4:38
or it can be just this
    background feeling...
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    "something's not right.
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    Something's wrong. I'm missing something."
  • 4:43 - 4:48
Even when I have some pleasure,
even when I achieve something in world,
  • 4:48 - 4:51
even when I have a good relationship,
  • 4:51 - 4:54
if I just have a pause or a moment,
  • 4:55 - 4:58
    there's this dissatisfied feeling like
  • 4:59 - 5:02
I'm isolated or cut off from something.
  • 5:02 - 5:06
So this feeling, which it seems like
  • 5:06 - 5:09
most people have, can motivate us
  • 5:10 - 5:13
to awaken from that small, separate self
  • 5:13 - 5:19
whose nature is a kind of separation
    anxiety.
  • 5:19 - 5:25
This limited character has a tendency
to grasp for what it wants.
  • 5:25 - 5:28
    It's just a collection
    of conditioned patterns
  • 5:28 - 5:33
of of craving what it wants or
trying to push away what it doesn't want.
  • 5:33 - 5:38
    It's this endless process of
    you can say a pleasure
  • 5:38 - 5:42
    principle, you know,
    going after pleasure, avoiding pain.
  • 5:42 - 5:45
And if we believe we are this
  • 5:45 - 5:49
    character, this conditioned pattern,
  • 5:49 - 5:53
    then we suffer
and we create suffering in the world.
  • 5:53 - 5:59
    The world becomes a reflection
    of that egoic consciousness.
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    The benefit of awakening
  • 6:02 - 6:05
    is that you suffer less
  • 6:05 - 6:08
and the people around you suffer less.
  • 6:08 - 6:13
There's no doubt in my mind that
    my initial connection with
  • 6:13 - 6:19
    my understanding of God
    was an awakening
  • 6:19 - 6:23
for me in my life, the biggest awakening
    that I've ever experienced.
  • 6:23 - 6:28
It was very much as if I had been asleep
    really for 50 years.
  • 6:28 - 6:33
Walking around like a robot, just doing
the things that I was taught to do
  • 6:33 - 6:36
from the time I was a young man,
you know, I had a formula down,
  • 6:36 - 6:42
get the girl, get the car, get a job,
get the house, get a spouse.
  • 6:42 - 6:47
A formula that I thought was
how Iife was supposed to work
  • 6:47 - 6:49
until I got to be around 53 years old.
  • 6:49 - 6:53
And I realized that while I had done
most of those things and had become
  • 6:53 - 6:59
    professionally successful to a degree,
then I realized that none of
  • 6:59 - 7:04
that matters. I who woke up somewhere
around the age of 53, realizing
  • 7:04 - 7:07
    none of this matters,
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    none of this means anything.
  • 7:09 - 7:12
    I was shocked to find
    how this literally meant,
  • 7:12 - 7:16
    how pointless it all was.
  • 7:19 - 7:29
    Who are you?
  • 7:30 - 7:32
When you stop following the script
  • 7:32 - 7:34
that has been laid out for your character.
  • 7:35 - 7:38
The one inherited from parents, society
  • 7:38 - 7:41
    and biological conditioning,
  • 7:41 - 7:45
    then new dimensions open up
    within the game.
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    The path opens up,
  • 7:48 - 7:51
but it is not a path
    to reach some destination.
  • 7:52 - 7:55
    It is a pathless path,
  • 7:55 - 7:58
a stripping away of illusion to arrive
  • 7:58 - 8:03
exactly where you are in the now.
  • 8:10 - 8:13
    My name is Rupert Spira.
  • 8:13 - 8:15
    I speak about the essential
  • 8:16 - 8:19
    non-dual understanding that underlies
  • 8:19 - 8:23
    all the great religious
    and spiritual traditions.
  • 8:23 - 8:28
And I write and lead guided meditations
  • 8:28 - 8:33
    and have conversations
    whose purpose is to lead
  • 8:34 - 8:38
    to an experiential recognition
  • 8:38 - 8:42
    of this understanding.
  • 8:42 - 8:44
    Understand that
  • 8:44 - 8:47
    the peace and the happiness
  • 8:47 - 8:49
    for which we all long
  • 8:49 - 8:53
    above all else, can never,
  • 8:53 - 8:57
    by definition
    be found in objective experience.
  • 8:58 - 9:01
    It can never be provided
    by objects, substances,
  • 9:01 - 9:04
    activities and relationships.
  • 9:04 - 9:06
    I would suggest
  • 9:07 - 9:09
    understanding that
  • 9:09 - 9:12
    clearly and not spending
    the rest of one's life
  • 9:12 - 9:17
    seeking fulfillment
    where it cannot be found.
  • 9:17 - 9:22
Anyone who is watching this movie is doing
    so precisely because they have
  • 9:22 - 9:27
either understood or at least intuited
  • 9:27 - 9:31
    that the peace and happiness
for which they long cannot be found
  • 9:32 - 9:35
in objective experience and have begun
  • 9:35 - 9:39
this investigation into their true nature.
  • 9:39 - 9:42
That is the most important investigation
  • 9:43 - 9:47
    one can make,
and it is the investigation upon
  • 9:47 - 9:52
    which the depends our happiness.
  • 9:52 - 9:55
The biggest question of my life,
    of course,
  • 9:55 - 10:00
which I believe is the question
most people look at sooner or later, is
  • 10:00 - 10:03
    "What is the point, actually?"
  • 10:03 - 10:06
"What is the point of life?"
  • 10:06 - 10:10
    That, much to my surprise,
I was told that the point of life
  • 10:10 - 10:15
    had nothing to do
with anything that I was doing.
  • 10:15 - 10:18
    It wasn't about my job.
  • 10:18 - 10:20
    It wasn't about my career.
  • 10:20 - 10:25
    It wasn't about hardly anything
    in my physical life.
  • 10:25 - 10:28
Those were aspects of my life
were not the point of life.
  • 10:29 - 10:33
    The point of my life,
as I have come to understand
  • 10:33 - 10:36
it was for me to experience,
  • 10:36 - 10:39
    express, demonstrate and fulfill
  • 10:40 - 10:43
my true identity, who I really am.
  • 10:44 - 10:46
I think that the biggest question
  • 10:46 - 10:49
that most people face is a question
    that hardly
  • 10:49 - 10:53
    anyone ever asks themselves
    or ever answers.
  • 10:54 - 10:57
    The biggest question of life,
  • 10:57 - 11:00
in my understanding, is "who am I?"
  • 11:00 - 11:03
    Who am I?
  • 11:05 - 11:08
Am I simply a physical entity
  • 11:08 - 11:11
like a bird in the sky or fish in the sea?
  • 11:11 - 11:16
    You know, perhaps more sophisticated,
    but just a physical entity.
  • 11:16 - 11:19
    I'm born, I live, I die.
  • 11:19 - 11:22
That's the beginning and the end of it.
  • 11:22 - 11:25
Or is it possible, just possible
  • 11:25 - 11:27
    that I'm more than that?
  • 11:27 - 11:30
Is it possible that I'm a spiritual entity
  • 11:31 - 11:34
    simply having a physical experience?
  • 11:39 - 11:42
    Every experience in your life
  • 11:42 - 11:46
has brought you to this one
    universal question.
  • 11:46 - 11:48
    Who are you?
  • 11:50 - 11:56
Don't look for an answer with the mind.
  • 11:57 - 12:02
Let everything be exactly as it is.
  • 12:05 - 12:09
Who is aware of the mind?
  • 12:11 - 12:16
    Feel everything that comes up.
  • 12:17 - 12:21
Who is aware of those feelings?
  • 12:23 - 12:27
    Have a complete experience
    of everything that comes up
  • 12:27 - 12:31
as a result of your inquiry.
  • 12:42 - 12:45
    I'm Donald Hoffman and I'm a professor
  • 12:45 - 12:48
    emeritus of cognitive sciences
at the University of California at Irvine.
  • 12:49 - 12:52
My work has been teaching students,
    although now I'm emeritus for
  • 12:52 - 12:54
I don't teach. And now I do research.
  • 12:54 - 12:59
    I do research right now
    on consciousness, mathematical models
  • 12:59 - 13:03
    of consciousness,
and how physics and spacetime might arise
  • 13:03 - 13:08
    from a theory of consciousness
    that's completely mathematically precise.
  • 13:09 - 13:11
    My own journey has been
  • 13:11 - 13:14
    both from the spiritual side
    and from the science side.
  • 13:14 - 13:20
So my my father was a minister,
    fundamentalist Christian minister.
  • 13:20 - 13:23
So I got that on Sundays
  • 13:23 - 13:26
and I got science at school
    and they conflicted, right?
  • 13:26 - 13:30
The stories I was getting were,
    contradictory.
  • 13:30 - 13:35
And so as a teenager, I realized
I needed to figure things out for myself.
  • 13:35 - 13:38
And I decided the question I
  • 13:38 - 13:41
    wanted to answer was,
    are we machines?
  • 13:41 - 13:44
Are people just machines or not?
  • 13:44 - 13:48
I mean, from the physical point of view,
    are we just be machines
  • 13:48 - 13:53
From a spiritual point of view,
    we wouldn't be machines.
  • 13:52 - 13:55
    It wasn't precise enough
to say what we would be.
  • 13:55 - 13:58
And so so I decided to ask the question
  • 13:58 - 14:01
    scientifically, are we just machines?
  • 14:01 - 14:05
And the best way I thought to do that
would be to study artificial intelligence.
  • 14:05 - 14:08
And so so I went to MIT
  • 14:08 - 14:12
and was in the artificial intelligence
    lab studying artificial intelligence
  • 14:12 - 14:16
and also in what's now the brain
    and cognitive science department, studying
  • 14:16 - 14:18
    the human side of things.
Because I wanted to do both.
  • 14:18 - 14:21
I wanted to see what can machines do
and what is special, if anything,
  • 14:21 - 14:26
    about humans and human neuroscience.
    To answer that,
  • 14:26 - 14:29
    that very question
    ar the spiritual traditions right?
  • 14:29 - 14:31
Or are we more than just machines
  • 14:31 - 14:35
    or is the physical, scientific
    point of view right?
  • 14:35 - 14:36
    And we are just machines,
  • 14:36 - 14:38
and consciousness is just an artifact
  • 14:38 - 14:41
    of brain activity.
  • 14:43 - 14:49
    The scientific materialist paradigm that
has been predominant in the last century
  • 14:49 - 14:53
    denies the existence of
    anything beyond the physical,
  • 14:54 - 14:55
    anything that cannot be
  • 14:55 - 14:58
    verified by the scientific method.
  • 14:59 - 15:01
    Science is an impasse.
  • 15:01 - 15:06
It cannot move beyond the paradox
that is fundamental to quantum physics,
  • 15:06 - 15:09
which brought it face to face
    with the observer,
  • 15:10 - 15:13
    with consciousness itself.
  • 15:13 - 15:16
    Likewise, religions are,
    for the most part, functioning
  • 15:16 - 15:19
only on the level of belief.
  • 15:19 - 15:24
    They've lost their original purpose,
which was to lead to direct experience,
  • 15:24 - 15:27
to the truth of who and what we are.
  • 15:28 - 15:31
The split between science and spirituality
  • 15:31 - 15:34
    has rendered both impoverished.
  • 15:35 - 15:39
    Religions and spiritual systems
    desperately need rigorous methods,
  • 15:40 - 15:43
which can be shown to create conditions
    for awakening to happen.
  • 15:44 - 15:47
And science desperately needs an openness
  • 15:47 - 15:50
    to the possibility
    of something beyond the physical.
  • 15:51 - 15:54
It is not about giving up religion
    or science,
  • 15:54 - 15:59
    but about going deeper,
    being willing to change ourselves
  • 15:59 - 16:02
so that we become a better tool
    for investigation.
  • 16:03 - 16:06
We are the ones doing the experiment,
  • 16:06 - 16:09
    and the experiment itself.
  • 16:11 - 16:15
    Religion has been the language
    and the container
  • 16:15 - 16:21
    of these traditions
    of meditation, spirituality
  • 16:21 - 16:24
that have been written down and passed
  • 16:24 - 16:28
    on through the generations.
  • 16:28 - 16:33
    Certainly there is some language
    that is very literal,
  • 16:33 - 16:36
    which divides religions and divides
  • 16:36 - 16:39
cultures when things are taken literally.
  • 16:39 - 16:44
But if you feel the spirit of religion,
  • 16:44 - 16:46
    you can follow the
  • 16:46 - 16:50
    thread back to authentic awakening.
  • 16:50 - 16:55
    Anyone has the potential,
whether they have belief or no belief,
  • 16:55 - 16:58
    because awakening is inherent
  • 16:58 - 17:03
    within our human consciousness,
    just by our human birth.
  • 17:03 - 17:06
    So whatever you call it,
    and whenever language is used,
  • 17:07 - 17:10
    there's certain principles
that seem to be the same
  • 17:10 - 17:14
    throughout these different religions
  • 17:14 - 17:17
    and spiritualities
    and meditation traditions.
  • 17:17 - 17:20
When I was younger, this understanding
  • 17:20 - 17:25
    was mainly available
    in the Eastern spiritual traditions.
  • 17:25 - 17:27
It was available in the Western
  • 17:27 - 17:32
    traditions,
but it was so disguised and codified
  • 17:32 - 17:36
    in those traditions
    as to be almost inaccessible.
  • 17:36 - 17:40
So many people of my generation
    went physically
  • 17:40 - 17:45
    or at least intellectually,
to the East to find this understanding
  • 17:46 - 17:50
and Eastern culture by comparison with
  • 17:50 - 17:53
    Western culture is exotic.
  • 17:53 - 17:58
    And so this understanding
acquired a flavor of the exotic
  • 17:59 - 18:03
    from the cultures
    in which it was expressed.
  • 18:04 - 18:06
    And many people, myself included
  • 18:07 - 18:09
thought as a result of this
  • 18:09 - 18:13
    that there was something exotic
    about the non dual
  • 18:13 - 18:18
    understanding; that it required
some extra ordinary way of life,
  • 18:18 - 18:21
that you had to give up family life
  • 18:21 - 18:25
    or grow your hair
or get a special name or subscribe
  • 18:25 - 18:32
to some kind of teacher or or tradition
    or engage in strange practices.
  • 18:32 - 18:35
    All these kind of things
    which had nothing to do
  • 18:35 - 18:39
    with the core understanding.
They were to do with the culture
  • 18:39 - 18:43
    in which the understanding
was expressed at a particular time.
  • 18:43 - 18:48
    So now the understanding
    has been completely divested
  • 18:48 - 18:54
    of the traditional cultural packaging
in which many of us first heard about it.
  • 18:55 - 19:00
    And now just the essential
    understanding is available
  • 19:00 - 19:03
in a way that enables us to carry
    on leading our lives
  • 19:03 - 19:08
exactly as they are. Family life, work
    life...
  • 19:08 - 19:13
    it's not necessary to make
any external changes in one's life.
  • 19:14 - 19:16
The challenge we have on this planet
  • 19:16 - 19:19
is that we think there's more than one
  • 19:19 - 19:21
    essence.
  • 19:22 - 19:23
    So we live in a
  • 19:23 - 19:26
world of what I would call duality.
  • 19:27 - 19:29
There's male and female, black and white,
  • 19:30 - 19:34
big and small, fast and slow, up
and down, here and there, before
  • 19:34 - 19:37
    and after,
but in fact, there's only one thing.
  • 19:39 - 19:42
    All things are one thing.
  • 19:42 - 19:45
    There is only one thing.
  • 19:46 - 19:48
So it turns out that when
    we look deeply at everything
  • 19:48 - 19:53
we see that here and there, big and small,
fast and slow, up and down, left and right,
  • 19:53 - 19:58
male and female, are all the same thing,
    simply expressing
  • 19:58 - 20:03
    different characteristics
but in no way separate from each other.
  • 20:03 - 20:06
I believe that all of us
  • 20:06 - 20:08
    are individuations
  • 20:08 - 20:09
    of God.
  • 20:11 - 20:12
I believe that God exists in, as, and
  • 20:12 - 20:19
    through every human being
and for that matter, every sentient
  • 20:19 - 20:21
    being in the cosmos.
  • 20:21 - 20:25
    So I see then that
I am in relationship to God
  • 20:26 - 20:28
as a wave is to the ocean.
  • 20:29 - 20:31
    A wave is no different
    from the ocean; it's
  • 20:31 - 20:36
simply an arising of the ocean
    in individual form.
  • 20:37 - 20:39
And when that individuation is complete,
  • 20:40 - 20:43
the wave recedes back into the ocean
    whence it came.
  • 20:43 - 20:46
To arise again on another day.
  • 20:47 - 20:52
    So I believe that
we are all individuations of divinity,
  • 20:52 - 20:55
and when we see everything as divine,
  • 20:55 - 20:58
we change our relationship with everything.
  • 20:59 - 21:01
    And everything becomes
  • 21:01 - 21:03
    different in our experience.
  • 21:04 - 21:10
    That's how the world changes.
  • 21:17 - 21:21
    Consciousness
is the ultimate reality of the universe,
  • 21:22 - 21:27
so we might well ask if consciousness
is the ultimate reality of the universe
  • 21:27 - 21:31
    and everything, and everyone
is obviously that, then how come
  • 21:34 - 21:38
the world appears to us as a multiplicity
    and diversity
  • 21:38 - 21:44
    of discrete and independently
    existing people
  • 21:44 - 21:48
    and animals and things
all made out of stuff called matter.
  • 21:48 - 21:52
How can we reconcile this statement
    that consciousness
  • 21:52 - 21:55
is the ultimate reality of the universe
    when it appears
  • 21:55 - 21:59
as a multiplicity and diversity of objects
    made out of matter?
  • 21:59 - 22:02
So the the evidence that I'm using
    to suggest that consciousness
  • 22:02 - 22:07
is fundamental has many aspects to it.
  • 22:08 - 22:10
    One is that physics itself
  • 22:10 - 22:13
says that space time isn't fundamental
  • 22:13 - 22:16
    and evolutionary theory
    also agrees that spacetime
  • 22:16 - 22:19
    and physical objects
    are not fundamental reality.
  • 22:19 - 22:24
Now, both of those theories tell us only
that, that spacetime is not fundamental.
  • 22:24 - 22:27
    They don't tell us
    what is beyond spacetime.
  • 22:27 - 22:32
    And so my argument
is that what the physicists are finding
  • 22:32 - 22:35
    beyond spacetime, they're finding
    mathematical structures,
  • 22:35 - 22:38
    but what those are about
  • 22:38 - 22:41
is not really clear. What is this
    realm beyond space time about?
  • 22:42 - 22:46
And so I'm proposing that the realm
beyond space time is about consciousness.
  • 22:46 - 22:49
    And I would suggest that
    infinite consciousness has the ability
  • 22:49 - 22:55
to localize itself as numerous separate
    subjects of experience,
  • 22:55 - 22:59
that is, all sentient beings, all people
    or animals.
  • 22:59 - 23:03
    Each of us are localizations
    of infinite consciousness,
  • 23:03 - 23:08
    in infinite consciousness
    made only of infinite consciousness
  • 23:08 - 23:11
    from whose perspective it views
  • 23:11 - 23:15
its own activity as the outside world.
  • 23:15 - 23:19
So what appears to us as
a world made out of matter
  • 23:19 - 23:24
    from our localized perspectives,
is from the point of view of reality,
  • 23:24 - 23:29
simply the activity of the one
    infinite consciousness.
  • 23:29 - 23:34
In other words, in the ultimate analysis,
    there are no discrete
  • 23:34 - 23:38
    or independently existing things
    or people.
  • 23:38 - 23:41
There is one infinite, indivisible, whole.
  • 23:41 - 23:46
The unity of being that is only refracted
  • 23:46 - 23:50
    into an apparent multiplicity
and diversity of objects and things,
  • 23:50 - 23:54
when The One looks at its own activity
  • 23:54 - 23:57
    through the perceiving faculties
  • 23:57 - 23:59
    of the finite mind.
  • 24:00 - 24:02
    If we are awake,
  • 24:02 - 24:05
we realize that there's one awareness
  • 24:06 - 24:10
that is disguised as all of these
    different beings on the planet,
  • 24:10 - 24:14
    one awareness
    shining through everyone's eyes.
  • 24:14 - 24:19
Then we literally see ourselves in others.
  • 24:19 - 24:22
And that tendency to operate as an ego,
  • 24:22 - 24:27
the tendency to take for oneself
  • 24:27 - 24:31
    falls away
because we directly realize the truth.
  • 24:31 - 24:35
    The truth is
    that we're all one consciousness.
  • 24:36 - 24:39
The experience of my spiritual self
  • 24:40 - 24:42
was only possible in the realm
  • 24:42 - 24:45
of the physical for a very good reason,
  • 24:45 - 24:50
because only in the realm of the physical
    was the opposite available.
  • 24:50 - 24:53
In other words, just use a simple example,
  • 24:53 - 24:56
if I wanted to experience myself,
    if I could speak
  • 24:56 - 24:59
    metaphorically, as the light,
  • 25:00 - 25:03
I couldn't experience being the light
if I was amidst the light,
  • 25:04 - 25:06
nothing else around me but the light,
  • 25:06 - 25:10
    which is a perfect definition
of the realm of the spiritual.
  • 25:11 - 25:14
So I would come to a realm
which I call the realm of the physical,
  • 25:14 - 25:17
    where there is something
    other than the light.
  • 25:17 - 25:20
Because if I want to experience myself
    as the light,
  • 25:20 - 25:24
not just know myself as that,
    but experience it,
  • 25:24 - 25:26
I could only do that where there was
  • 25:26 - 25:29
    the opposite of the light,
    in this case, the darkness.
  • 25:30 - 25:31
    So I brought
  • 25:31 - 25:37
this opportunity to the physical realm
where the light and the dark exist
  • 25:37 - 25:41
simultaneously, and then in that outward
  • 25:41 - 25:45
expression of myself as the light,
I could be who I really am.
  • 25:46 - 25:49
    And this understanding suggests
  • 25:49 - 25:54
    that behind our differences
we are all the same being,
  • 25:54 - 26:00
not a similar being, but we are all
    literally one... the same being.
  • 26:00 - 26:05
And love is the felt experience
  • 26:06 - 26:09
of this oneness or shared being.
  • 26:09 - 26:15
It's a theorem of our theory that
    there is ultimately one consciousness.
  • 26:16 - 26:20
So we have this dynamics of many,
    many conscious agents.
  • 26:20 - 26:23
    But the theory tells us
that ultimately all those conscious agents
  • 26:23 - 26:27
    are really just projections
    of a single one consciousness.
  • 26:27 - 26:30
    The current paradigm in science
  • 26:31 - 26:33
has, and it has been for for centuries,
  • 26:33 - 26:38
    is that space and time
are the fundamental nature of reality.
  • 26:38 - 26:41
    They're irreducible
and they are the foundation of everything.
  • 26:41 - 26:44
    And prior to Einstein, space
and time were viewed as separate.
  • 26:44 - 26:48
    Now, space and time together,
a unified into spacetime are viewed
  • 26:48 - 26:50
as the fundamental nature of reality.
  • 26:50 - 26:53
And science has then assumed that
  • 26:54 - 26:58
    spacetime and objects in spacetime
    are the foundational reality.
  • 26:58 - 27:01
    And so, for example,
    when we talk about consciousness,
  • 27:02 - 27:07
consciousness itself then must be somehow
a product of objects in space and time.
  • 27:07 - 27:11
    In that physicalist framework
space and time and physical objects
  • 27:12 - 27:16
    without any consciousness
    are the fundamental reality.
  • 27:16 - 27:21
    And consciousness comes later on
in the evolution of the universe, right?
  • 27:21 - 27:23
So that the big bang, there was
    no consciousness,
  • 27:23 - 27:25
there was just spacetime and energy.
  • 27:25 - 27:28
    The energy coalesced
    into massive particles
  • 27:28 - 27:31
    and eventually life emerged after
    who knows how many millions
  • 27:31 - 27:33
    or hundreds of millions
    or billions of years.
  • 27:33 - 27:37
    Then after that consciousness came,
    even later.
  • 27:38 - 27:42
From that point of view, when you die,
    the physical complexity that gave
  • 27:42 - 27:45
    rise to consciousness dissolves
    and so your consciousness dissolves.
  • 27:45 - 27:49
    And so the physicalist framework
    really does eliminate consciousness
  • 27:50 - 27:53
    as a fundamental thing,
    altogether and says that
  • 27:53 - 27:55
    when your body dies,
    your consciousness goes with it.
  • 27:57 - 27:59
From this other point of view...
  • 27:59 - 28:02
what I've done with my colleagues,
we have we used evolutionary theory
  • 28:02 - 28:05
to point out that it's an implication
  • 28:05 - 28:09
    of evolutionary theory, that space
    and time is not fundamental,
  • 28:09 - 28:12
    so the physicalist interpretation
    of evolution is wrong.
  • 28:12 - 28:15
    The idea that that space
    and time and particles
  • 28:15 - 28:21
    somehow have evolved
    due to human organisms
  • 28:22 - 28:25
is is the wrong framework, because
    spacetime itself is not fundamental.
  • 28:25 - 28:28
    We're positing a dynamics beyond
    spacetime that's much richer.
  • 28:28 - 28:30
    The dynamics of consciousness.
  • 28:30 - 28:33
What we do not do is throw away
    our old theories.
  • 28:33 - 28:35
When physicists say spacetime is doomed,
  • 28:35 - 28:38
that doesn't mean we no longer
    pay attention to Einstein.
  • 28:38 - 28:41
    Absolutely not.
    We pay attention to Einstein.
  • 28:41 - 28:46
Any new theory beyond spacetime that
the physicists come up with better project
  • 28:46 - 28:50
into space time and give us back Einstein
and it better give us back quantum theory
  • 28:50 - 28:51
    or you're wrong.
  • 28:51 - 28:53
    All of our old theories
  • 28:53 - 28:57
    are wonderful, wonderful friends
and we're going to keep them
  • 28:57 - 29:00
as special cases of a deeper theory.
  • 29:00 - 29:04
So in our theory of consciousness,
we have to do the same thing.
  • 29:04 - 29:06
We can't just propose anything we want.
  • 29:06 - 29:08
We have to have a theory
    of consciousness that projects
  • 29:08 - 29:10
and gives us back space time,
  • 29:10 - 29:14
and gives us back quantum theory,
and gives us back special and general
  • 29:14 - 29:17
    relativity, and gives us back
    evolution by natural selection.
  • 29:17 - 29:20
If we cannot do that in precise
    mathematical detail, then there's
  • 29:20 - 29:24
no reason for scientists to take our
    theory of consciousness seriously.
  • 29:25 - 29:29
It's as if infinite consciousness puts
on a virtual reality headset. Infinite
  • 29:29 - 29:33
consciousness puts on a a VR headset
    made of thinking and perceiving.
  • 29:33 - 29:38
    And in doing so,
the moment it puts on the VR headset,
  • 29:38 - 29:42
    it localizes itself
    within its own activity.
  • 29:42 - 29:47
    And through that headset
it looks out through the perceiving
  • 29:47 - 29:52
faculties of a finite mind; seeing,
    hearing, touching, tasting and smelling.
  • 29:52 - 29:56
    And it fragments
the unity of its own being
  • 29:57 - 30:00
and makes it appear as 10,000 things.
  • 30:01 - 30:03
    What I'm suggesting is that
  • 30:04 - 30:09
there is very much more to to the universe
    than the finite mind.
  • 30:09 - 30:15
I'm not suggesting that the universe
only appears in each of our finite minds.
  • 30:15 - 30:20
The universe exists outside of our finite
    mind, but inside consciousness.
  • 30:20 - 30:23
    But it is the limitations
    of our finite mind
  • 30:24 - 30:27
that give the universe its appearance.
  • 30:28 - 30:33
So when we look out at the universe,
    we're seeing the reality
  • 30:33 - 30:38
that exists prior to its being perceived.
  • 30:37 - 30:42
But we are seeing it through the lens
    of our perceiving faculties,
  • 30:42 - 30:46
    which gives it its appearance.
  • 30:46 - 30:51
So the idea of awakening in many spiritual
    traditions has been the idea
  • 30:51 - 30:55
that what we have taken as reality
  • 30:55 - 30:59
    objects in space
and time, our physical bodies and so forth
  • 30:59 - 31:03
    is not the final reality,
that there is a much deeper reality,
  • 31:03 - 31:08
a reality of consciousness that transcends
space and time and physical objects,
  • 31:08 - 31:11
    and that we're not divorced
    from that reality.
  • 31:11 - 31:15
That reality is, in some sense,
the essence of what we are.
  • 31:15 - 31:18
    And so awakening is awakening
    from the illusion
  • 31:18 - 31:22
that I'm just a little body in space
and time to the fact that I am
  • 31:22 - 31:26
in fact the author of everything
I see inside of space and time.
  • 31:26 - 31:30
I create it on the fly
    as I look and perceive.
  • 31:30 - 31:37
    How do I awaken?
  • 31:37 - 31:42
One becomes awakened by recognizing that
  • 31:43 - 31:46
what we essentially are is already
  • 31:46 - 31:49
    fully awake, fully aware,
  • 31:50 - 31:53
    complete, whole, fulfilled at peace.
  • 31:53 - 31:56
It's like asking how does the
  • 31:56 - 32:00
    sun become illuminated?
  • 32:00 - 32:02
    Its nature is light.
  • 32:02 - 32:04
    It is already fully illuminated.
  • 32:04 - 32:09
    The nature of our essential
being is already peace and happiness.
  • 32:09 - 32:12
It's not clear to us all,
because our essential being is so
  • 32:12 - 32:16
    thoroughly mixed with the content
    of experience that its innate
  • 32:17 - 32:21
    Peace and happiness is
    dimmed by experience.
  • 32:21 - 32:26
And for that reason we think that our
essential being needs to be enlightened.
  • 32:26 - 32:28
    No, our essential being
    doesn't need to be enlightened
  • 32:28 - 32:32
    any more than the sun
needs to be lit up in the early morning.
  • 32:33 - 32:36
    The sun's always shining
    with the same brightness.
  • 32:36 - 32:40
Our essential being is always shining
with the same peace and joy.
  • 32:40 - 32:44
But that peace and joy are dimmed
    by the agitation
  • 32:44 - 32:47
    and lack that characterizes
    our thoughts and feelings.
  • 32:48 - 32:52
    There's no person that awakens.
  • 32:52 - 32:55
    So the I that awakened
  • 32:56 - 32:58
    I awakened from this Dan
  • 32:58 - 33:01
    structure at a meditation center.
  • 33:01 - 33:03
    It was a Zen center.
  • 33:03 - 33:06
We were doing a Zen sesshin
  • 33:06 - 33:11
    which is a long period
    of intensive practice.
  • 33:10 - 33:16
    So Zen is amazing
    for creating this container
  • 33:16 - 33:19
    where there are
    these conditions of no escape.
  • 33:19 - 33:25
    So the Dan character
    that had learned meditation,
  • 33:25 - 33:28
the Dan character had been doing
    all this meditation,
  • 33:28 - 33:30
    this doer of meditation,
  • 33:31 - 33:34
    realized that it couldn't awaken.
  • 33:34 - 33:37
It's like all the meditation tricks,
  • 33:37 - 33:43
all the practices that had been learned
    were of no use.
  • 33:43 - 33:46
It got to the point where that character
  • 33:46 - 33:49
who was trying to awaken, failed
  • 33:49 - 33:52
to awaken and had to fail.
  • 33:52 - 33:57
That the character that I had been living,
the character that I've been playing
  • 33:57 - 34:02
all my life, had to let go or die and
  • 34:03 - 34:05
    what was left?
  • 34:05 - 34:08
    What was left
    when there was no doer
  • 34:08 - 34:11
    when there was no meditator
  • 34:11 - 34:15
    meditating or doing something
    called, meditation,
  • 34:15 - 34:20
what was left was my true nature
  • 34:20 - 34:21
    or me... just me.
  • 34:21 - 34:26
When we awaken from this small, separate
    sense of self, it's
  • 34:26 - 34:29
not that we're killing the ego
  • 34:29 - 34:32
    or we're fighting it.
  • 34:33 - 34:37
    It's actually we're allowing it
    to semi retire
  • 34:37 - 34:40
from its job of ego identity
  • 34:40 - 34:43
and then relax to be part
  • 34:43 - 34:46
of our team, part of our consciousness.
  • 34:47 - 34:50
And this gives us a sense
    of freedom immediately
  • 34:50 - 34:54
that we're not looking at the world
    through a small lens,
  • 34:54 - 34:59
    that we're we're open
hearted and open minded in a way that's
  • 35:01 - 35:06
expansive and yet at the same time,
    more intimately connected.
  • 35:07 - 35:10
    Enlightenment is not about
    becoming awakened.
  • 35:10 - 35:13
    Nobody becomes awakened
    or enlightened.
  • 35:13 - 35:17
It's a recognition of the light,
    the light of pure knowing
  • 35:17 - 35:19
whose nature is peace and happiness
  • 35:19 - 35:22
that we always and already are.
  • 35:27 - 35:31
    My name is Lisa Natoli,
and I'm known as a spiritual teacher.
  • 35:31 - 35:35
I teach about healing and awakening
    and transformation.
  • 35:35 - 35:39
    Awakening
is the recognition of your true nature,
  • 35:39 - 35:45
and it's the realization of what
you really are, which is consciousness.
  • 35:45 - 35:50
And consciousness is just one word
for many words that people use
  • 35:50 - 35:56
    for awareness, life, love, God,
  • 35:57 - 35:58
    light.
  • 35:59 - 36:05
So waking up to the recognition
    that I'm not this body
  • 36:05 - 36:09
that I am, that which never dies
and that which is never born,
  • 36:13 - 36:16
and that was a very difficult idea for me.
  • 36:16 - 36:20
I've been on a spiritual path since 1992.
  • 36:20 - 36:22
I started with A Course in Miracles.
  • 36:22 - 36:25
    I always studied it religiously.
  • 36:25 - 36:29
I mean, I was someone who was
    so committed to knowing the
  • 36:29 - 36:35
    Self, knowing God, waking up.
    ... I couldn't get it,
  • 36:36 - 36:38
because I was under the belief
  • 36:38 - 36:41
    that awakening was something mystical,
  • 36:41 - 36:45
    that something would happen,
    that something would occur,
  • 36:46 - 36:49
and it would be like Jesus
  • 36:49 - 36:52
    or Buddha
or all of these enlightened masters
  • 36:52 - 36:55
and it wasn't happening for me.
  • 36:55 - 36:56
    I couldn't understand why.
  • 36:57 - 37:00
    Why am I so committed
  • 37:01 - 37:07
and I'm having deep moments of peace and
happiness and joy... and still struggling.
  • 37:07 - 37:10
I started to realize the simplicity
  • 37:10 - 37:13
of our true nature, which is awareness.
  • 37:14 - 37:19
So for someone who's listening to me
    right now,
  • 37:19 - 37:25
the awareness that's hearing this voice,
    that's what we are.
  • 37:25 - 37:29
And it doesn't have a location,
    it doesn't have a gender,
  • 37:30 - 37:33
    it doesn't have a color,
    it doesn't have a body,
  • 37:33 - 37:36
    and it's totally unlimited.
  • 37:37 - 37:40
So awakening is where we wake up
  • 37:41 - 37:44
    to our true nature.
  • 37:44 - 37:48
We wake up to the realization
    that I am the awareness
  • 37:48 - 37:53
    of this experience right now
    as I'm here.
  • 37:53 - 37:55
    And it's so ordinary
  • 37:55 - 37:57
    we miss it.
  • 37:56 - 37:59
We think it can't be that simple.
  • 38:00 - 38:02
The recognition of our true nature,
  • 38:02 - 38:04
    it doesn't lead to happiness.
  • 38:04 - 38:08
It is happiness... the nature of being
  • 38:08 - 38:10
    is happiness itself.
  • 38:11 - 38:15
So the recognition of our true
nature is the experience of happiness.
  • 38:21 - 38:24
Who is aware in this moment?
  • 38:25 - 38:26
    The mind will
  • 38:26 - 38:29
    look for something,
    or try to complicate it.
  • 38:30 - 38:32
    You already are
  • 38:32 - 38:37
that which the mind is looking for.
  • 38:37 - 38:40
The mind will always miss it.
  • 38:40 - 38:43
So don't look to the mind for an answer.
  • 38:44 - 38:46
    Don't push away your thoughts
  • 38:46 - 38:50
and don't get caught in the thoughts.
  • 38:50 - 38:55
Simply let go of the interest
    or attachment to thoughts, ideas
  • 38:55 - 38:57
    and beliefs.
  • 38:58 - 39:01
    Intend to directly experience
  • 39:01 - 39:04
    who you are.
  • 39:05 - 39:10
Don't try to negate the mind
    or to achieve some state.
  • 39:11 - 39:14
    All doing, all manipulation,
  • 39:14 - 39:18
    all movement is more controlling
    by the mind.
  • 39:19 - 39:24
Allow the mind to be as it is.
  • 39:28 - 39:33
    Sometimes people can awaken
just in day to day life.
  • 39:33 - 39:36
    They don't necessarily need practice.
  • 39:36 - 39:40
So sometimes things will happen in life
    where there's an interrupt
  • 39:40 - 39:45
    in the pattern of you.
And there can be a spontaneous awakening.
  • 39:46 - 39:50
But if someone's life is just going on
in a kind of robotic pattern
  • 39:50 - 39:53
    or repetitive pattern, then
  • 39:53 - 39:57
some sort of intervention is necessary.
  • 39:57 - 40:04
if one is called to awakening
and that interrupt in the pattern of you
  • 40:04 - 40:07
    is sometimes called sadhana
    or spiritual practice.
  • 40:08 - 40:11
    And these practices are always
  • 40:11 - 40:13
    conditioned.
  • 40:13 - 40:16
Thet are something that we learn
    with the conditioned mind.
  • 40:16 - 40:20
So they can make it more likely
    for awakening to happen,
  • 40:20 - 40:24
sort of by loosening the bonds
    within the self structure.
  • 40:24 - 40:29
    Sometimes they say
    that awakening happens by accident,
  • 40:29 - 40:32
but the practice makes you more accident
    prone.
  • 40:33 - 40:37
    The techniques,
the practices can be very useful
  • 40:37 - 40:39
to make you more accident prone.
  • 40:39 - 40:43
But then at a certain point
    have to be let go.
  • 40:44 - 40:48
    Because if the mind
    is continuously doing some practice
  • 40:48 - 40:51
or some thing, then the mind has
  • 40:51 - 40:55
the reins, mind is in the driver's seat.
  • 40:55 - 40:59
So the practices are useful, very useful
  • 40:59 - 41:04
    as steppingstones
    for making the self structure,
  • 41:04 - 41:08
    you can say less dense
or enlightening up the self structure
  • 41:09 - 41:12
so that it becomes more permeable
  • 41:12 - 41:14
    to our true nature.
  • 41:16 - 41:21
    The paradox with practice
is that when you finally awaken,
  • 41:21 - 41:24
you realize that all of the practices
  • 41:25 - 41:27
were being done by the false self,
  • 41:27 - 41:31
the character in the VR game,
    and that YOU,
  • 41:31 - 41:35
the true self, was never bound.
  • 41:36 - 41:39
    All you have to do
is give up the preferences of the ego,
  • 41:40 - 41:44
to give up the fixation on things.
  • 41:44 - 41:50
Anything within the field of changing
phenomena is not the true self,
  • 41:50 - 41:54
the you that you think you are, the you
    that you've always been
  • 41:54 - 41:57
    identified with will never awaken
  • 41:57 - 42:00
    you awaken from that character.
  • 42:01 - 42:05
    You awaken from the delusion
that you were this conditioned character.
  • 42:05 - 42:09
So when people come to these
    retreats, they think this
  • 42:09 - 42:13
"I" this little "me" is going to awaken,
some great thing is going to happen.
  • 42:13 - 42:16
    But at a certain point,
that little me will never do it.
  • 42:16 - 42:19
It has to give up, it has to fail.
  • 42:19 - 42:21
And it's only in that failure
  • 42:21 - 42:27
we realize who we are, that we've always
been aware, we've always been present.
  • 42:27 - 42:31
We just got hooked into this character
    and we believed
  • 42:31 - 42:33
    we were that.
  • 42:44 - 42:50
    I started my spiritual search
    in the classical Advaita Vedanta
  • 42:50 - 42:53
tradition, which was a devotional path
  • 42:53 - 42:57
    that involved mantra meditation,
  • 42:57 - 43:01
    which I practiced
    very diligently for 20 years.
  • 43:01 - 43:04
    And mantra meditation involves
  • 43:05 - 43:08
focusing your attention on a sound
  • 43:09 - 43:11
and then gradually the sound fades.
  • 43:12 - 43:16
    However, it was really when
    I came in touch
  • 43:17 - 43:19
    with the direct path that
  • 43:19 - 43:26
    my spiritual search
    really reached its culmination.
  • 43:26 - 43:29
    Because in this direct approach,
  • 43:29 - 43:34
we don't give our attention to any object,
    however subtle,
  • 43:34 - 43:38
for instance, a mantra, a sound,
    the breath,
  • 43:38 - 43:42
we allow our attention to sink inwards
  • 43:42 - 43:45
    or backwards into its source.
  • 43:46 - 43:48
    Let's use an analogy.
  • 43:49 - 43:52
Imagine that you are watching your life
    on a television screen.
  • 43:53 - 43:56
You are identified with the character
    on the screen.
  • 43:57 - 43:58
    Day after day,
  • 43:58 - 44:03
year after year you are involved
with the story of the character
  • 44:03 - 44:06
when suddenly you wake up out of the story
  • 44:06 - 44:10
    to notice the screen
    on which the character appears
  • 44:10 - 44:14
and you realize you are not the character
    you've been watching.
  • 44:15 - 44:18
Objects can come and go on the screen.
  • 44:18 - 44:20
    Characters come and go,
  • 44:20 - 44:23
    but the screen remains unchanged.
  • 44:23 - 44:26
    The character can get wet,
  • 44:26 - 44:31
but the screen does not get wet.
    The character can be disturbed,
  • 44:31 - 44:33
but the screen is not disturbed.
  • 44:34 - 44:37
    Without the screen,
    the characters would not exist,
  • 44:38 - 44:40
    yet screen goes unnoticed.
  • 44:40 - 44:43
The characters go about their scripted
    lives.
  • 44:45 - 44:47
    Awareness is like the screen.
  • 44:47 - 44:50
    It is like the space
    in which all thoughts,
  • 44:50 - 44:54
    motions, all states of consciousness
    come and go.
  • 44:56 - 44:58
    Thoughts, sensations
  • 44:58 - 45:03
    and the entire outside world
appear on the screen, constantly changing.
  • 45:03 - 45:06
But the screen does not change.
  • 45:08 - 45:14
It's the mind that changes states
    through the human experience.
  • 45:14 - 45:19
But there's something, that what you are,
    that remains.
  • 45:19 - 45:22
    Something that is ever present,
  • 45:22 - 45:25
that is aware of those changing states
  • 45:25 - 45:29
    and that is consciousness
    or our true nature.
  • 45:29 - 45:33
As long as there is attachment
to a character on the screen,
  • 45:33 - 45:37
a sense that I am that character,
    then there will be suffering;
  • 45:37 - 45:41
maya the illusion of the self.
  • 45:42 - 45:44
Nothing you can do as the dream
  • 45:44 - 45:49
character will help to free you.
    Whether you follow the script
  • 45:49 - 45:52
in the drama of your life
    or rebel against the script,
  • 45:52 - 45:56
if you act from the point of view
    of the character,
  • 45:56 - 45:58
then you're caught in the illusion.
  • 45:59 - 46:00
    To awaken,
  • 46:00 - 46:05
    stop identifying
with what appears on the screen.
  • 46:06 - 46:09
Recognize that it is all impermanent.
  • 46:09 - 46:14
    Stop reacting to thoughts
and treating the program as real.
  • 46:14 - 46:18
If I withdraw attention from the screen,
    turning awareness
  • 46:18 - 46:22
    towards itself,
    an unfathomable thing happens.
  • 46:23 - 46:27
    Awareness itself wakes up.
  • 46:28 - 46:30
    This is not a happening.
  • 46:31 - 46:33
Happening is what happens on the screen.
  • 46:34 - 46:37
Awakening is just recognizing the screen
  • 46:37 - 46:40
    that was always already there.
  • 46:41 - 46:44
Do not believe your next thought
  • 46:45 - 46:50
    instead, turn awareness
    towards awareness itself.
  • 47:01 - 47:04
    I have always been myself.
  • 47:04 - 47:07
My sense of my self runs
    throughout my life.
  • 47:07 - 47:11
    It remains
    consistently present throughout my life.
  • 47:12 - 47:14
What is present in me now,
  • 47:14 - 47:17
    that was present yesterday,
    last year, ten years ago,
  • 47:17 - 47:20
and when I was a two year old child?
  • 47:21 - 47:24
What is this essential "I" or self
  • 47:25 - 47:28
to whom all my experience happens?
  • 47:29 - 47:31
    The recognition
  • 47:31 - 47:35
of the nature of that one
is the great secret to life.
  • 47:35 - 47:38
It is the direct path to peace
  • 47:38 - 47:43
and happiness. It is not something
    that a person initiates.
  • 47:44 - 47:47
It's something that a person recognizes.
  • 47:48 - 47:50
    To re-cognize.
  • 47:50 - 47:53
    That is to know, again.
  • 47:54 - 47:56
What we've known from the beginning
  • 47:56 - 48:01
but is simply forgotten, or denied
    or failed to believe.
  • 48:01 - 48:04
So we cannot initiate closeness to God.
  • 48:04 - 48:10
    We can simply recognize,
to recognize that it's always been there
  • 48:10 - 48:13
    and will always be there.
  • 48:13 - 48:17
It was only this direct pointing
    to awakening,
  • 48:17 - 48:22
    this opening to what's already
here that allowed me to find
  • 48:23 - 48:24
    a new way of
  • 48:24 - 48:27
being- a new stage of development.
  • 48:27 - 48:34
    Many people think it's
a very impossible or out of reach goal
  • 48:34 - 48:39
to know the self, and my own
  • 48:39 - 48:43
sort of purpose as a teacher,
just because of my own awakening,
  • 48:43 - 48:48
has really been wanting to make it
very practical, very down to Earth.
  • 48:48 - 48:52
I love to teach people, it's
    available to everyone.
  • 48:52 - 48:57
    If we believe and feel
  • 48:57 - 49:00
    that we are a temporary,
    finite, separate self,
  • 49:01 - 49:04
we are, whether we know it or not,
  • 49:04 - 49:07
    searching for peace and happiness.
  • 49:07 - 49:10
    In other words,
it's not possible to be a separate self,
  • 49:10 - 49:15
to feel oneself as a separate self
and not be in search of happiness.
  • 49:15 - 49:18
    So what is required
  • 49:18 - 49:22
in this case is to reorientate
    one's search for happiness,
  • 49:22 - 49:25
    instead of seeking for happiness
in the objective content of experience,
  • 49:26 - 49:28
    to seek happiness in oneself.
  • 49:28 - 49:32
So the spiritual practice that is required
  • 49:32 - 49:37
    is to direct one's attention
    or more accurately,
  • 49:37 - 49:41
to relax one's attention into its source,
  • 49:42 - 49:46
    pure awareness, rather than directed
    towards
  • 49:46 - 49:49
    an object substance
activity or relationship, and so on.
  • 49:50 - 49:54
    So the spiritual practice,
if we can call it a practice,
  • 49:54 - 49:57
    would be this relaxing
  • 49:57 - 50:01
    of the attention,
    this subsidence of the attention
  • 50:02 - 50:04
    into the heart of awareness,
  • 50:05 - 50:08
    resting in being as being.
  • 50:09 - 50:10
    Love.
  • 50:11 - 50:13
Pure love is my true self.
  • 50:13 - 50:15
    It's my true nature.
  • 50:16 - 50:18
Pure love for everyone and everything,
  • 50:18 - 50:21
    for every aspect of life.
  • 50:21 - 50:25
Even those things with which I disagree.
  • 50:25 - 50:30
For one who has recognized the nature
of their being, they know their being
  • 50:30 - 50:33
as the the source of the peace
  • 50:33 - 50:36
and happiness for which they long.
  • 50:37 - 50:42
So the world no longer becomes the place
  • 50:42 - 50:46
    in which they seek
    happiness, seek fulfillment.
  • 50:46 - 50:49
Doesn't mean to say that such a person
    no longer has desires,
  • 50:49 - 50:54
but the desires are not there
to fulfill the sense of lack
  • 50:54 - 50:58
that is characteristic of the separate
    self.
  • 50:59 - 51:02
    As such,
a person has found the source of happiness
  • 51:02 - 51:07
    within themselves and their desires
come from that sense of happiness.
  • 51:08 - 51:10
They do not go towards it.
  • 51:10 - 51:13
    For instance,
    in the realm of relationship,
  • 51:13 - 51:15
    it makes a big difference
    to our relationships.
  • 51:15 - 51:18
We no longer seek an other
  • 51:19 - 51:22
to fulfill the needs of our self.
  • 51:23 - 51:25
    We seek another to share
  • 51:26 - 51:28
    the experience of happiness
    that we already have.
  • 51:28 - 51:32
    And this relieves our
our friends of the impossible burden
  • 51:32 - 51:36
of providing happiness for a voracious,
  • 51:37 - 51:40
    unsatisfied self.
  • 51:40 - 51:42
    Nothing occurs in my life
  • 51:43 - 51:47
that is has not brought me
benefit or will not bring me benefit
  • 51:47 - 51:52
in the sense that every moment,
    every activity, every outcome
  • 51:52 - 51:55
    moves me forward
  • 51:55 - 51:58
    in the process
of the evolution of my soul.
  • 51:58 - 52:01
And that's why I came here
    to the physical realm,
  • 52:01 - 52:05
    to evolve.
  • 52:11 - 52:14
    Remain open.
  • 52:14 - 52:17
    Feel your inner aliveness,
  • 52:17 - 52:20
    letting energy circulate freely.
  • 52:21 - 52:24
Don't try to make anything happen.
  • 52:26 - 52:29
Who is aware of that energy,
  • 52:29 - 52:32
    that inner aliveness?
  • 52:36 - 52:41
Notice the mind's tendency to control
    and manipulate,
  • 52:41 - 52:43
    to get involved.
  • 52:44 - 52:48
    Without the use
    of your memory or language,
  • 52:49 - 52:51
    Who are you?
  • 52:52 - 52:55
    Beyond the mind and senses,
  • 52:55 - 52:57
    who are you?
  • 52:58 - 53:04
    Who is aware?
  • 53:18 - 53:22
Many people who are hearing these ideas
    for the first time,
  • 53:22 - 53:25
they've never even heard this idea
    of the self.
  • 53:26 - 53:29
    In my mind,
there's two different camps of people.
  • 53:29 - 53:33
There are those who are on a spiritual
path and they have heard this idea.
  • 53:33 - 53:36
They're trying to reach the self,
they're trying to be the self.
  • 53:36 - 53:39
    They're seeking, they're searching.
  • 53:39 - 53:42
    And then there's other people
who have just been living their life.
  • 53:42 - 53:45
They've never heard of these ideas before.
  • 53:45 - 53:47
They've never heard of Know Thyself.
  • 53:47 - 53:51
    Many people think
know thyself means know the body,
  • 53:51 - 53:54
    know yourself, be yourself,
    be authentic.
  • 53:54 - 54:00
What it really means, to know
thyself is to know what you are,
  • 54:00 - 54:04
to know what you are in truth
and to really know your true nature.
  • 54:04 - 54:07
The words know thySelf were carved
  • 54:08 - 54:12
on the entrance of the Temple of
Apollo in Delphi, and as such
  • 54:13 - 54:18
stand as an invitation that the dawn
    of Western civilization to humanity,
  • 54:18 - 54:23
    suggesting that to Know Thyself
    is really the foundation
  • 54:23 - 54:26
    of all civilization. Why?
  • 54:27 - 54:32
Because our Self stands at the center
    of all our experience.
  • 54:32 - 54:37
    Whatever we are experiencing,
it is we who are experiencing it.
  • 54:37 - 54:40
Whatever we think and feel, our thoughts
  • 54:40 - 54:43
and feelings arise on behalf of our Self.
  • 54:44 - 54:49
    Whatever activities and relationships
    we are engaged
  • 54:49 - 54:54
    in, we engage those activities
and relationships in service of our Self.
  • 54:55 - 55:00
    So our Self stands
at the center of our experience.
  • 55:00 - 55:05
So what could be more important
than to know the nature of our Self,
  • 55:06 - 55:09
    and would it be possible
  • 55:10 - 55:12
to know the nature of anything else
  • 55:12 - 55:17
if we do not first know the nature of that
    which knows it?
  • 55:17 - 55:20
    I think awakening is
  • 55:21 - 55:23
    about ending the nightmare
  • 55:24 - 55:27
    and stepping into the dream.
  • 55:27 - 55:30
    By that I mean
  • 55:30 - 55:33
    we desert or
finally abandon the nightmare of what
  • 55:33 - 55:39
we've been told about life, about God,
    and about ourselves.
  • 55:39 - 55:42
And we step into the dream
    of our grandest notion.
  • 55:42 - 55:46
    I often ask,
What do you think your life would be like
  • 55:47 - 55:50
    if you found yourself
    stepping into the highest
  • 55:50 - 55:55
    grandest, most wonderful thought
you ever had about God, and about life
  • 55:55 - 55:58
    and about yourself.
  • 55:58 - 56:03
So this recognition of our true nature
    is not only the recognition
  • 56:03 - 56:08
    that brings our desire
for happiness in the world to an end.
  • 56:08 - 56:11
It is also the recognition that enables us
  • 56:11 - 56:16
    to live in a way
that is consistent with the understanding
  • 56:16 - 56:22
    that at the deepest level,
    everything and everyone, are one.
  • 56:23 - 56:25
    This understanding would bring
  • 56:25 - 56:28
    kindness, compassion, justice,
  • 56:28 - 56:33
    tolerance, understanding into our society.
  • 56:34 - 56:36
    Our society would be revolutionized
  • 56:36 - 56:38
    by this understanding.
  • 56:39 - 56:43
As humanity lets go of ego
    based approaches,
  • 56:43 - 56:46
    then science, religion, politics
  • 56:46 - 56:50
    and economics
start to reflect the perennial wisdom.
  • 56:51 - 56:54
Whether it is the native traditions
    who realize
  • 56:54 - 56:56
    Great Spirit in all things,
  • 56:57 - 57:00
    or the Egyptian/Kemetic traditions
    who describe the human
  • 57:00 - 57:05
evolutionary journey from the lowly scarab
  • 57:05 - 57:07
    to the one source,
  • 57:07 - 57:09
or when we hear the words
  • 57:09 - 57:12
of the mystics of the Christian, Hindu,
  • 57:12 - 57:15
    Muslim, or Buddhist traditions,
  • 57:15 - 57:20
or the teachings of Plato and Plotinus
    we find that
  • 57:20 - 57:26
those who have realized their true nature
speak of groupings of conscious agents.
  • 57:26 - 57:29
    Of course,
they used the language of their culture
  • 57:29 - 57:33
    and times
to express the one perennial truth.
  • 57:34 - 57:40
Science is now starting to see
not a world of unconscious particles
  • 57:40 - 57:42
and fields, but a universe made of
  • 57:42 - 57:45
    conscious agents.
  • 57:45 - 57:49
    Something new is emerging
    in the world of science.
  • 57:50 - 57:53
    As Nikola Tesla said,
  • 57:53 - 57:57
the day science begins to study
    nonphysical phenomena,
  • 57:57 - 58:01
it will make more progress in one decade
  • 58:01 - 58:05
than in all the previous centuries
    of its existence.
  • 58:06 - 58:11
    That day is today.
  • 58:16 - 58:19
    Every time that we've had
    a mathematically precise advance
  • 58:19 - 58:23
    in science,
it has opened up new technologies
  • 58:23 - 58:27
    that look like magic compared
    to what we had before.
  • 58:27 - 58:31
So my feeling is that this theory
    of conscious agents beyond spacetime
  • 58:32 - 58:34
    will give us technologies
  • 58:34 - 58:36
that will be truly mind boggling.
  • 58:37 - 58:42
    For example, right now,
most of the galaxies that we see,
  • 58:43 - 58:45
I think 97% of the galaxies that we see,
  • 58:45 - 58:50
we can never go to. They are receding
from us faster than the speed of light.
  • 58:50 - 58:54
So they're not moving through space
faster than the speed of light.
  • 58:54 - 58:57
Space itself is expanding, so quickly
    that their speed
  • 58:57 - 59:00
moving away from us is greater
    than the speed of light.
  • 59:00 - 59:02
So we could never travel through space
  • 59:02 - 59:04
to go to 97% of the galaxies
    that we can see.
  • 59:04 - 59:08
So there's all this real estate out there
that's waving at us and saying, hi,
  • 59:08 - 59:10
    we're out here
and you can never come to us.
  • 59:10 - 59:12
That's if you go through spacetime.
  • 59:12 - 59:15
But what if you realize that spacetime
    is just your headset?
  • 59:16 - 59:18
It's just the format of a game
  • 59:19 - 59:22
and you're not stuck inside the headset.
  • 59:22 - 59:26
You can play with the software
    that's running the game.
  • 59:27 - 59:31
So it's like someone who's like in Grand
    Theft Auto, you're a
  • 59:31 - 59:32
    Wizard of Grand Theft Auto,
  • 59:33 - 59:34
so you know how to use the car
  • 59:34 - 59:38
and drive the roads and you can
    beat everybody in the game.
  • 59:38 - 59:41
But suppose you actually know the software
    that runs Grand Theft Auto.
  • 59:41 - 59:44
So you step outside of the Grand Theft
    Auto headset
  • 59:44 - 59:46
and you can play with the software.
  • 59:46 - 59:49
Well, you can take the gasoline
out of the tank of the wizard.
  • 59:49 - 59:51
You can give them a flat tire.
  • 59:51 - 59:53
You can change the geometry of the roads.
  • 59:53 - 59:55
You can do whatever you want to.
  • 59:55 - 59:57
    So once we understand
    our space time headset,
  • 59:58 - 60:01
    we won't have to travel
    to the Andromeda Galaxy
  • 60:01 - 60:04
    through space time,
which would take us 2.4 million years.
  • 60:04 - 60:09
We can just go around space time.
  • 60:11 - 60:15
I see the world around me as stepping into
  • 60:16 - 60:20
    a quieter expression and experience
of what it means to be human
  • 60:21 - 60:24
    and what it means
to be an aspect of divinity.
  • 60:24 - 60:28
But I don't think that we have
    an endless amount of time.
  • 60:28 - 60:30
I get a sense that time is
  • 60:30 - 60:34
running out, that it's now or never time.
  • 60:34 - 60:37
I think we're on the right path.
  • 60:37 - 60:42
I have a sense of optimism
that because of the kinds of opportunities
  • 60:42 - 60:45
that we see today in the world
    to communicate
  • 60:45 - 60:47
    powerful and important ideas
  • 60:47 - 60:51
ways that we didn't have even
    a few years ago
  • 60:51 - 60:55
    are creating the possibility
that we can get to that place of critical
  • 60:55 - 60:58
mass, that we can reach critical mass
  • 60:59 - 61:01
    before our time runs out.
  • 61:02 - 61:06
But we would be mistaken if we think
we have an endless amount of time
  • 61:08 - 61:09
    on this planet.
  • 61:09 - 61:12
    When each individual
  • 61:12 - 61:15
    disidentifies
    from their conditioned character,
  • 61:16 - 61:19
    then they're no longer
    acting as an egoic entity.
  • 61:20 - 61:24
    And that brings
about a transformation on the planet.
  • 61:24 - 61:26
    This brings a new Earth.
  • 61:26 - 61:29
Life as we know it right now
    on this planet,
  • 61:30 - 61:33
I think we need to make some changes
    and make them quickly,
  • 61:33 - 61:35
    dramatically and radically
  • 61:36 - 61:39
if we want to see the tomorrow
    for which we've all dreamt.
  • 61:39 - 61:43
    So, could this understanding
    become mainstream in our lifetime?
  • 61:43 - 61:45
    Why not? Yes.
  • 61:46 - 61:49
The challenge we have right now is
    nothing is working,
  • 61:49 - 61:54
and the time has come for us
to stand up and say that's true.
  • 61:55 - 61:57
Surely we can do better than this.
  • 61:58 - 61:59
    Surely,
  • 62:00 - 62:03
    We can expand our understanding
    of who we are
  • 62:03 - 62:07
and our expression of our true nature.
  • 62:08 - 62:09
    We need to pay attention
  • 62:10 - 62:11
    to our environment,
  • 62:11 - 62:14
to our politics, to our economics,
  • 62:15 - 62:18
    and to our spiritual process
    on this planet.
  • 62:20 - 62:24
Because the problem in the world
today is not a political problem.
  • 62:24 - 62:26
    It's not an economic problem.
  • 62:27 - 62:29
    It's not a social problem.
  • 62:30 - 62:33
    It's a spiritual problem.
  • 62:34 - 62:37
It has to do with how committed we are
  • 62:37 - 62:41
    with stepping into the highest
    spiritual truths.
  • 62:42 - 62:45
This is not New Age philosophy.
  • 62:46 - 62:48
    These ideas have been around
  • 62:48 - 62:51
    for thousands of years.
  • 62:55 - 62:58
The perennial wisdom has been expressed
    through
  • 62:58 - 63:02
    countless traditions and cultures
    and like awareness
  • 63:02 - 63:06
    itself, has always been hidden
    in plain view.
  • 63:08 - 63:10
    In Christianity,
  • 63:10 - 63:12
the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas contains
  • 63:12 - 63:16
direct pointers to our true nature.
  • 63:16 - 63:21
    The disciples asked Jesus,
    When will the kingdom come?
  • 63:21 - 63:25
    Jesus said,
It will not come by waiting for it.
  • 63:26 - 63:30
It will not be a matter of saying,
Here it is, or there it is.
  • 63:30 - 63:34
    Rather, the kingdom of
    the father is spread out
  • 63:34 - 63:38
upon the earth and people do not see it.
  • 63:39 - 63:46
The Kingdom is not here or there.
Awareness is not here or there.
  • 63:46 - 63:50
It is not fixed in time and space.
  • 63:50 - 63:53
If you are waiting for something to happen
  • 63:53 - 63:58
for some outward event or some state,
    some ascension,
  • 63:58 - 64:00
some healing or some energy, then
  • 64:00 - 64:04
your conditioned mind is still seeking.
  • 64:04 - 64:07
It is still mediating your experience
  • 64:07 - 64:08
    of the now.
