What is Greenwashing? | Sustainable Explainable

  • Not Synced
When a company says that their products
  • Not Synced
    are green, eco-friendly or sustainable
  • Not Synced
that's, good for the environment, right?
  • Not Synced
    Welll, maybe.
  • Not Synced
But it's possible that the company is
  • Not Synced
    greenwashing. What?
  • Not Synced
    Greenwashing. It's when the company
  • Not Synced
    makes unsupportive claims that mislead
  • Not Synced
    customers into thinking that their
  • Not Synced
    products are sustainable or eco-friendly.
  • Not Synced
This makes the companies to appeal to
  • Not Synced
    their environmental mind of consuming
  • Not Synced
    without actually having to make
  • Not Synced
    meaningful changes in their business
  • Not Synced
    practices.
  • Not Synced
And that's not cool for you or the planet
  • Not Synced
that we live on. No it's not.
  • Not Synced
    Greenwashing is a big problem
  • Not Synced
and there's so many moving parts
  • Not Synced
So, in fact, why greenwashing happens?
  • Not Synced
And how you can use your power as a
  • Not Synced
    consumer to help?
  • Not Synced
    Wow. Sustainable explainable
  • Not Synced
So, why would businesses actually decide
  • Not Synced
    to greenwash?
  • Not Synced
According to one survey, 66% of the
  • Not Synced
    respondents said that they takes
  • Not Synced
    sustainability into account whenever
  • Not Synced
    they are shopping.
  • Not Synced
So it's no surprise that business are
  • Not Synced
trying to attract this growing audience
  • Not Synced
As business are scrambling to meet the
  • Not Synced
desires of the market, many of them are
  • Not Synced
finding that just slapping a green sticker
  • Not Synced
on something and calling it green is
  • Not Synced
way easier and cheaper than making
  • Not Synced
    the fundamental changes that consumers
  • Not Synced
    are actually looking for
  • Not Synced
And you definitely have seen greenwashing
  • Not Synced
    at the stores.
  • Not Synced
    You know the picture ads
  • Not Synced
    with nature scenes are strategically
  • Not Synced
placed leaves an, of course, lots and lots
  • Not Synced
    of green.
  • Not Synced
And if it's green, it must be good right?
  • Not Synced
    Not always
  • Not Synced
And this can be so confusing
  • Not Synced
as a customer because you just want to go
  • Not Synced
to the store, buy what you need without
  • Not Synced
    destroying the planet making eco-friendly
  • Not Synced
    choices and go home
  • Not Synced
But greenwashing floods the market with
  • Not Synced
so many products that claim to be
  • Not Synced
    environmentally friendly when they're
  • Not Synced
actually not. And that makes it very
  • Not Synced
difficult for users and consumers make the
  • Not Synced
best sustainable choice. And this even
  • Not Synced
with cleaning products that claim to be
  • Not Synced
non-toxic when they are actually toxic.
  • Not Synced
Or a strawless lid that turns out to have
  • Not Synced
more plastic in it than a lid and a straw.
  • Not Synced
And furthermore, if a company sold you
  • Not Synced
a plastic cup that used to have a
  • Not Synced
plastic straw and you take off the plastic
  • Not Synced
straw and no longer have a plastic straw
  • Not Synced
The plastic cup that they sold you still
  • Not Synced
    unsustainable. Greenwashing.
  • Not Synced
Greenwashing can come in so many
  • Not Synced
    different forms
  • Not Synced
We are on a look-out for
  • Not Synced
    suggestive imagery, selective disclosure
  • Not Synced
symbolic actions, lack of roof, bagginess
  • Not Synced
    and over phares.
  • Not Synced
At this point you're probably ready to
  • Not Synced
tossing the towel of green consuming,
  • Not Synced
but don't hold on to that towel
  • Not Synced
    because there is hope
  • Not Synced
    Green products, they do exist.
  • Not Synced
And here is what you can do as
  • Not Synced
a consumer to make sure that you're
  • Not Synced
practices are green win instead of
  • Not Synced
    greenwash
  • Not Synced
Look for evidence. And if it seems vague
  • Not Synced
then talks on a detective cap and see
  • Not Synced
if he can find some confirmation
  • Not Synced
or deceive if there's third party
  • Not Synced
    certifications. These third party
  • Not Synced
certifications help to confirm that a
  • Not Synced
    product is eco-friendly.
  • Not Synced
A few stamps for approval like
  • Not Synced
FSC certified, USDA Organic, Energy Star
  • Not Synced
    and Fair Trade USA
  • Not Synced
Be aware of plain language like
  • Not Synced
    one hundred percent Earth friendly,
  • Not Synced
completely sustainable. If it sounds too
  • Not Synced
good to be true, probably is.
  • Not Synced
Make sure that this clear marketing
  • Not Synced
when refrain to eco claims. When
  • Not Synced
    looking at a product, marketing
  • Not Synced
should tell you if the packaging, or
  • Not Synced
the product, or both are sustainable and
  • Not Synced
    lastly, do your best.
  • Not Synced
An in the age of fast paced information
  • Not Synced
    updates and changing sustainability
  • Not Synced
landscape, it's truly difficult to know
  • Not Synced
weather or not you are making a
  • Not Synced
    right decision as a customer
  • Not Synced
But remember these large companies that
  • Not Synced
need to change and that the world
  • Not Synced
is not under your shoulders but
  • Not Synced
your choices do have an impact.
  • Not Synced
These companies linten to the market
  • Not Synced
and they listen to the consumers.
  • Not Synced
Every day, we have lots and lots of
  • Not Synced
    decisions that we make.
  • Not Synced
That means we have lots and lots of
  • Not Synced
    opportunities to make sustainable
  • Not Synced
    decisions.
  • Not Synced
So stick in that. You're not alone because
  • Not Synced
    we are in this together.
