What is Sheltered Instruction

-
0:19 - 0:24Not long ago, some teachers asked me
to explain to them what I thought -
0:24 - 0:26sheltered instruction meant.
-
0:26 - 0:30Simply stated, sheltered
instruction is a teaching method. -
0:30 - 0:35It employs a wide variety of strategies
that the teacher uses to modify their -
0:35 - 0:39instruction so that students can
negotiate the value of the lesson, -
0:39 - 0:41the language, and the concepts.
-
0:41 - 0:47The best way to teach a language in
school is to provide meaningful context. -
0:47 - 0:50And the simplest way to provide meaningful
-
0:50 - 0:52context in schools is
to embed it in content. -
0:54 - 0:57English speaking teachers that
teach math and science and -
0:57 - 1:00social studies are employed in
this process, because simply, -
1:00 - 1:04they are the best resources that we
have to teach meaningful content. -
1:04 - 1:08After that explanation, teachers often
tell me they believe sheltered instruction -
1:08 - 1:11then is just good teaching.
-
1:11 - 1:13And I won't argue that it's good teaching,
but -
1:13 - 1:15it goes well beyond that particular realm.
-
1:15 - 1:18Teachers must understand
the application of language, -
1:18 - 1:22the acquisition of language,
the stages of language development, -
1:22 - 1:26what influences productivity,
what influences negative productivity. -
1:28 - 1:33Teachers must also understand how cultural
influence student behaviors and outcomes. -
1:33 - 1:37Sheltered instruction lesson planning
revolves around four cornerstones, -
1:37 - 1:43hands on activities, guarded vocabulary,
visual clues and cooperative learning. -
1:44 - 1:48But beyond that, I must also consider
some linguistic expectations. -
1:48 - 1:52I must make sure that listening and
speaking skills always precede reading and -
1:52 - 1:53writing skills.
-
1:54 - 1:57That I don't depend too often
on first language components -
1:57 - 2:01called concurrent translation,
I must guard against that kind of thing. -
2:01 - 2:05And maybe the most important element is to
understand where my students are relative -
2:05 - 2:07to their language development.
-
2:07 - 2:10What level are they actually on?
-
2:10 - 2:14I need to make sure my students
are actively participating, -
2:14 - 2:18part of my task is to make sure I
get language out, not language in. -
2:18 - 2:23Which means that when I pose questions,
I must be prepared to scaffold those -
2:23 - 2:28questions so that all language
learners can actively participate. -
2:28 - 2:32Inevitably, every component of the lesson
needs to be carefully considered and -
2:32 - 2:32planned.
-
2:34 - 2:39To sum up, sheltered instruction is
a teaching method that uses a variety of -
2:39 - 2:42applications that surround
four cornerstones. -
2:42 - 2:44The purpose is to provide
meaningful context so -
2:44 - 2:49students can negotiate the language and
learn the content. -
2:49 - 2:52While at the same time promoting
active participation so -
2:52 - 2:57that students provide language, or
language out, and not language in. -
