Antecedent Behavior Consequence: ABC Charts & Model

  • 0:05 - 0:10
Narrator: Here is a brief overview of the
    ABC model of ABA.
  • 0:10 - 0:15
    ABC stands for antecedent, behavior,
    and consequence.
  • 0:15 - 0:21
The ABC model is a three-part system
used to understand why a behavior occurs.
  • 0:21 - 0:26
ABC charts are used to provide solid
data and evidence to support behavior
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    intervention plans and functional
    behavioral assessments.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
ABC charts are an essential part of a
    student's FBA.
  • 0:33 - 0:38
One of the main goals of applied behavior
analysis is to understand the precise
  • 0:38 - 0:43
    circumstances that lead to inappropriate
    student behavior, identify the triggers
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    for student behavior.
  • 0:45 - 0:51
And that's what behavior analysis is all
    about understanding why.
  • 0:51 - 0:56
The broad definition above describes the
ABC model as a three-part system.
  • 0:56 - 1:01
The first part the A stands for the
    antecedent.
  • 1:01 - 1:07
The antecedent is what precedes or comes
    before the behavior.
  • 1:07 - 1:12
    Next is the behavior itself.
  • 1:12 - 1:19
The behavior studied should be a
    disruptive action.
  • 1:19 - 1:25
And the third part is the consequence.
  • 1:25 - 1:29
    That is what directly follows
    the behavior.
  • 1:29 - 1:32
When conducting an ABC chart it
is very important to pay attention to
  • 1:32 - 1:37
the environment of the student as it
often leads to an inappropriate behavior.
  • 1:37 - 1:42
Student behavior can be triggered based
solely on the environment such as during
  • 1:42 - 1:45
a certain class period or around
    particular students.
  • 1:45 - 1:49
Right now I'm going to give you an example
    of an antecedent behavior consequence
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    in play.
  • 1:50 - 1:54
Let's say that a classroom teacher just
finished a lesson and wants to call a
  • 1:54 - 1:58
student to the board to do a particular
problem in front of the classroom.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
A teacher asks our student to do the
problem on the board, but the
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    student refuses.
  • 2:04 - 2:08
The teacher presses the issue and the
student follows up by cursing out the
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    teacher.
  • 2:10 - 2:15
The teacher then sends a student to his
    social worker or case manager.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    Now analyze this situation.
  • 2:18 - 2:23
First the teacher asked a student to
do a problem on the board that was
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    the antecedent.
  • 2:25 - 2:30
Next the student cursed at the teacher.
  • 2:30 - 2:34
    That was the wrong behavior.
  • 2:34 - 2:39
And lastly the student was sent to the
    Child Study team.
  • 2:39 - 2:43
That was the consequence of cursing at
    the teacher.
  • 2:43 - 2:48
    All this information should
be provided in an ABC chart.
  • 2:48 - 2:53
With the ABC model you are looking to
collect data in an organized and
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    meaningful way.
  • 2:55 - 3:01
It is important to provide, dates, times,
and incidents when collecting your data.
  • 3:01 - 3:06
With applied behavior analysis the more
    data collected the better.
  • 3:06 - 3:10
Be sure to get a record on all the details
    as well.
  • 3:10 - 3:16
Get the details of the students
    environment.
  • 3:16 - 3:20
One environment may affect the students
    behavior whereas another environment
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    may not.
  • 3:23 - 3:27
In the example given it is reasonable to
suggest that the student cursed out the
  • 3:27 - 3:32
teacher because he didn't want to be
    embarrassed, however further details may
  • 3:32 - 3:36
lead to a different conclusion so
    this must be studied.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
Right now I just want to say thank you for
your time and do not forget to subscribe
  • 3:39 - 3:47
    to this channel.

The ABC model of ABA (applied behavior analysis) is explained through the three different parts, antecedent, behavior, consequence. The video explains how the ABC model with its ABC charts are a part a students functional behavior assessment, also known as the FBA to classroom teachers. A brief definition of ABC charts and and the ABC model for applied behavior analysis is given. A definitive example is also given as well, where the antecedent is given with a prime example, the problem behavior is question is identified, and lastly the consequence is given also. The importance of an ABC chart along with why abc charts are important in their relation functional behavioral assessments. This video is part of a playlist designed for teachers, child study team, case mangers, principals, educators, behaviorists, and more to understand certain triggers for student behavior. Other videos include positive behavior supports and interventions, behavior intervention plans, rewards systems for students, classroom management, and others. The Teachings in Education channel will continue to bring forth videos to inspire educations, and help them learn, advance and grow in education. Remember, together we make a family of educators.
