Antecedent Behavior Consequence: ABC Charts & Model

-
0:05 - 0:10Narrator: Here is a brief overview of the
ABC model of ABA. -
0:10 - 0:15ABC stands for antecedent, behavior,
and consequence. -
0:15 - 0:21The ABC model is a three-part system
used to understand why a behavior occurs. -
0:21 - 0:26ABC charts are used to provide solid
data and evidence to support behavior -
0:26 - 0:29intervention plans and functional
behavioral assessments. -
0:29 - 0:33ABC charts are an essential part of a
student's FBA. -
0:33 - 0:38One of the main goals of applied behavior
analysis is to understand the precise -
0:38 - 0:43circumstances that lead to inappropriate
student behavior, identify the triggers -
0:43 - 0:45for student behavior.
-
0:45 - 0:51And that's what behavior analysis is all
about understanding why. -
0:51 - 0:56The broad definition above describes the
ABC model as a three-part system. -
0:56 - 1:01The first part the A stands for the
antecedent. -
1:01 - 1:07The antecedent is what precedes or comes
before the behavior. -
1:07 - 1:12Next is the behavior itself.
-
1:12 - 1:19The behavior studied should be a
disruptive action. -
1:19 - 1:25And the third part is the consequence.
-
1:25 - 1:29That is what directly follows
the behavior. -
1:29 - 1:32When conducting an ABC chart it
is very important to pay attention to -
1:32 - 1:37the environment of the student as it
often leads to an inappropriate behavior. -
1:37 - 1:42Student behavior can be triggered based
solely on the environment such as during -
1:42 - 1:45a certain class period or around
particular students. -
1:45 - 1:49Right now I'm going to give you an example
of an antecedent behavior consequence -
1:49 - 1:50in play.
-
1:50 - 1:54Let's say that a classroom teacher just
finished a lesson and wants to call a -
1:54 - 1:58student to the board to do a particular
problem in front of the classroom. -
1:58 - 2:02A teacher asks our student to do the
problem on the board, but the -
2:02 - 2:04student refuses.
-
2:04 - 2:08The teacher presses the issue and the
student follows up by cursing out the -
2:08 - 2:10teacher.
-
2:10 - 2:15The teacher then sends a student to his
social worker or case manager. -
2:15 - 2:18Now analyze this situation.
-
2:18 - 2:23First the teacher asked a student to
do a problem on the board that was -
2:23 - 2:25the antecedent.
-
2:25 - 2:30Next the student cursed at the teacher.
-
2:30 - 2:34That was the wrong behavior.
-
2:34 - 2:39And lastly the student was sent to the
Child Study team. -
2:39 - 2:43That was the consequence of cursing at
the teacher. -
2:43 - 2:48All this information should
be provided in an ABC chart. -
2:48 - 2:53With the ABC model you are looking to
collect data in an organized and -
2:53 - 2:55meaningful way.
-
2:55 - 3:01It is important to provide, dates, times,
and incidents when collecting your data. -
3:01 - 3:06With applied behavior analysis the more
data collected the better. -
3:06 - 3:10Be sure to get a record on all the details
as well. -
3:10 - 3:16Get the details of the students
environment. -
3:16 - 3:20One environment may affect the students
behavior whereas another environment -
3:20 - 3:23may not.
-
3:23 - 3:27In the example given it is reasonable to
suggest that the student cursed out the -
3:27 - 3:32teacher because he didn't want to be
embarrassed, however further details may -
3:32 - 3:36lead to a different conclusion so
this must be studied. -
3:36 - 3:39Right now I just want to say thank you for
your time and do not forget to subscribe -
3:39 - 3:47to this channel.
