Louis CK 2015 - Racism and Sexism are very different

  • 0:01 - 0:03
Let me just tell you this first. I was uh,
  • 0:03 - 0:05
I was at a place to eat dinner in New York,
  • 0:05 - 0:07
and I heard these two women talking,
  • 0:07 - 0:08
and one of them was talking about the guy
  • 0:08 - 0:10
she's dating. They were about 21 years old
  • 0:10 - 0:12
like, NYU students. And so she's
  • 0:12 - 0:13
talking about it and you know a lot
  • 0:13 - 0:14
of times I'll hear this. A woman
  • 0:14 - 0:16
is talking about the guy she's dating and
  • 0:16 - 0:17
she runs down the stuff that's not
  • 0:17 - 0:19
satisfying. The things she doesn't like
  • 0:19 - 0:21
[In mocking tone] "he just you know,
  • 0:21 - 0:22
I text him and he like doesn't like
  • 0:22 - 0:24
respond right away and then when
  • 0:24 - 0:27
he does it's like whatever. So that's
  • 0:27 - 0:30
weird. And then like I saw him and he was
  • 0:30 - 0:33
just being weird and so then he calls me
  • 0:33 - 0:35
and he's like sorry I'm weird it's like
  • 0:35 - 0:37
weird right now and I was like whatever
  • 0:37 - 0:41
[arbitrary noises]. So it's just weird."
  • 0:41 - 0:42
And then I'm listening because I want
  • 0:42 - 0:43
to know what is her friend gonna
  • 0:43 - 0:44
say. I wanna know what kind of friend
  • 0:44 - 0:46
she has you know. And her friend just
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    says: "He's a piece of shit. He's
  • 0:49 - 0:52
a piece of shit. He's not good enough for
  • 0:52 - 0:57
you cause you're amazing. You're amazing.
  • 0:57 - 1:01
So he just can't handle how amazing you are."
  • 1:02 - 1:03
And I remember thinking that is a shitty
  • 1:03 - 1:07
friend. That's not a good friend. That is
  • 1:07 - 1:09
not a good way to approach life.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
[In mocking tone] "I'm amazing. And anyone
  • 1:11 - 1:14
who doesn't text me back just can't
  • 1:14 - 1:17
handle how amazing I am." I mean she's
  • 1:17 - 1:20
a student. She can't be, she's not Nelson
  • 1:20 - 1:24
    Mandela. She's in college. I'm sure she's
  • 1:24 - 1:26
fine. [In mocking tone] "You're amazing
  • 1:26 - 1:29
the way you, take classes". What?
  • 1:29 - 1:32
What is so amazing? She's kind of boring
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    he's kind of a douche. It's fine.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
They're fine. You need to know that
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    you're boring a little bit. It's important.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
Self love is a good thing but
  • 1:41 - 1:44
self awareness is more important. You
  • 1:44 - 1:46
need to once in a while go euh I'm
  • 1:46 - 1:47
kind of an asshole. You have to have
  • 1:47 - 1:49
that thought once in a while or you're
  • 1:49 - 1:51
a psychopath. You know like when you
  • 1:51 - 1:53
say to a friend "you're being an asshole"
  • 1:53 - 1:54
and they're like "no I'm not".
  • 1:54 - 1:58
Well it's not up to you. If you're
  • 1:58 - 2:00
an asshole or not. That's up to everybody
  • 2:00 - 2:04
else. You don't get to say no to that.
  • 2:05 - 2:06
"You're an asshole". No I'm not.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
Oh sorry, I thought, okay, I'm glad I
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    checked. I guess you're not.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
If somebody tells you you're an asshole
  • 2:14 - 2:17
you should go "ughh shit. Alright what
  • 2:17 - 2:19
happened how did I get here".
  • 2:20 - 2:20
It's like somebody saying you know
  • 2:20 - 2:21
you've got something on your face.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
[In mocking tone] "No I don't".
  • 2:25 - 2:27
It's like America. I feel like America is
  • 2:27 - 2:31
like the world's worst girlfriend. America
  • 2:31 - 2:33
is a terrible girlfriend to the rest of
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    the world. Because when somebody
  • 2:34 - 2:37
hurts America she remembers it forever.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
But if she does anything bad it's like
  • 2:39 - 2:43
[In mocking tone] "What?! It, I didn't do anything."
  • 2:44 - 2:46
America why do you keep bombing those
  • 2:46 - 2:47
people in Yemen? [In mocking tone] "Well,
  • 2:47 - 2:52
because, 911. Okay? 911. So just
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    shut up. Assholes."
  • 2:56 - 2:57
Okay but you killed hundreds of thousands
  • 2:57 - 2:59
of people so I think - "yeah but 911
  • 2:59 - 3:03
so fuck you. You don't even understand."
  • 3:04 - 3:06
Yeah but you're torturing people. "I didn-
  • 3:06 - 3:10
that wasn't even torture. Oh my god. He's
  • 3:10 - 3:14
such a baby. I didn't do anything to him."
  • 3:18 - 3:20
And I'm saying this about women because
  • 3:20 - 3:23
I'm a guy. Women might say this is what
  • 3:23 - 3:24
guys are like. That's just what it's like, you
  • 3:24 - 3:27
know because I think racism and sexism are
  • 3:27 - 3:29
very different. To me racism is just a
  • 3:29 - 3:31
mistake. It's like just an error.
  • 3:31 - 3:33
It doesn't really make any sense. We can
  • 3:33 - 3:35
just do away with it. But sexism,
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    isn't going anywhere. Because,
  • 3:37 - 3:41
sexism is way deep the fuck down inside.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
So it's just the way we feel about each
  • 3:44 - 3:48
    other. "Gaahhh women. Wom- Women."
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    "Wommeenennen"
  • 3:52 - 3:52
    "WOMEN"
  • 3:53 - 3:53
    "Women"
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    And you're like "Men. Meeen."
  • 3:59 - 4:00
    "Meeeeennn"
  • 4:00 - 4:03
    "Meh- meeeen"
  • 4:03 - 4:04
    "Men"
  • 4:04 - 4:05
    "Men"
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    "Men"
  • 4:08 - 4:11
    [Laughter]
  • 4:14 - 4:15
    Anyways so I'm watching The
  • 4:15 - 4:16
Wizard of Oz with my daughters.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
Is that enough of a pallete cleanser?
  • 4:18 - 4:19
    Alright.
  • 4:21 - 4:24
I'm watching the Wizard of Oz. I don't know
  • 4:24 - 4:25
if you've seen it it's about a little girl
  • 4:25 - 4:29
named Dorothy. Uh, very sweet little
  • 4:29 - 4:31
girl played by an alcoholic older lady.
  • 4:32 - 4:36
Who uh, lives in Kansas she has a dog
  • 4:36 - 4:39
she's very upset and she keeps telling people
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    "my dog"
  • 4:41 - 4:44
and everybody's like "this is a farm,
  • 4:44 - 4:46
    we're working, leave us alone."
  • 4:46 - 4:47
And then there's a tornado and they
  • 4:47 - 4:49
all run inside and they barely look for
  • 4:49 - 4:51
her it's unbelievable. It was so
  • 4:51 - 4:52
upsetting to me when I was a kid
  • 4:52 - 4:54
to see this movie. Because Auntie Em
  • 4:54 - 4:56
is like "Dorothy! Okay fuck it."
  • 4:56 - 4:58
And she just goes right inside
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    bolts the door. Unbelievable.
  • 5:01 - 5:02
    [Laughter]
  • 5:03 - 5:05
So Dorothy goes up to Oz and here's the
  • 5:05 - 5:06
thing I was watching this the other night
  • 5:06 - 5:08
and there was this one moment that really
  • 5:08 - 5:10
stunned me. It's when Ray Bolger,
  • 5:10 - 5:13
played the scarecrow, he just got
  • 5:13 - 5:15
    ripped apart by flying monkeys.
  • 5:15 - 5:16
And he's very upset and has this
  • 5:16 - 5:18
performance that's way over the top,
  • 5:18 - 5:19
    even for this movie.
  • 5:19 - 5:21
And you remember that moment? The
  • 5:21 - 5:22
Tin Man comes over "what happened?"
  • 5:22 - 5:23
And he's like "WELL FIRST THEY
  • 5:23 - 5:26
TORE MY ARMS OFF. AND THEY THREW
  • 5:26 - 5:29
THEM OVER THERE. AND THEN THEY
  • 5:29 - 5:31
TORE MY LEGS OFF. AND THEY THREW
  • 5:31 - 5:36
THEM OVER THERE." And I've seen this
  • 5:36 - 5:39
movie a thousand times. But for some
  • 5:39 - 5:40
reason this time that moment made me
  • 5:40 - 5:46
go "brrguhh shit". That was a lot.
  • 5:47 - 5:49
And I started to wonder if Victor Fleming,
  • 5:49 - 5:51
the guy who directed The Wizard of Oz,
  • 5:51 - 5:53
if he had a moment during the filming of
  • 5:53 - 5:54
the movie, where he was like
  • 5:54 - 5:57
"I think I gotta have a word with Ray.
  • 5:58 - 6:04
Cause that's getting to be a lot. Alright
  • 6:04 - 6:07
just let him do another one. Okay action!"
  • 6:07 - 6:09
What happened? "WELL FIRST THEY TORE MY
  • 6:09 - 6:12
ARMS OFF. AND THEY THREW THEM OVER THERE.
  • 6:13 - 6:17
AND THEN THEY TORE MY LEGS OFF. AND THEY
  • 6:17 - 6:20
    THREW THEM OVER THERE."
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    "Okay cut."
  • 6:25 - 6:26
    Comes over.
  • 6:27 - 6:31
    "Uh, so listen. Ray."
  • 6:32 - 6:35
    "YES?"
  • 6:39 - 6:42
    "Nah you're fine."
