Shift the script - why you're "supposed to" no longer works | Blake Mallen | TEDxWatts
-
0:07 - 0:11Remember how much we all
just loved pop quizzes in school? -
0:11 - 0:13We're going to start with one of those.
-
0:13 - 0:14If you feel like you know the answer,
-
0:14 - 0:17just fill in the blanks
by shouting the words out loud. -
0:17 - 0:19We'll all do it together, here we go.
-
0:19 - 0:21So, living a good life is simple.
-
0:22 - 0:24It starts out around age five.
-
0:24 - 0:26Grab the back pack, it's time to go to -
-
0:26 - 0:27Audience: School.
-
0:27 - 0:28At school, study hard to get good -
-
0:28 - 0:29Audience: Grades.
-
0:29 - 0:32So you can graduate high school
and get into a good - (College) -
0:32 - 0:34So you can get a good - (Job)
-
0:34 - 0:36Work hard so you can make good -
-
0:36 - 0:37Audience: Money.
-
0:37 - 0:40Meet the right person,
fall in love and get - -
0:40 - 0:41Audience: Married.
-
0:41 - 0:43Find a house and start a -
-
0:43 - 0:44Audience: Family.
-
0:44 - 0:46But don't forget to save your - (Money)
-
0:46 - 0:47So you can eventually -
-
0:47 - 0:48Audience: Retire.
-
0:48 - 0:49And be -
-
0:49 - 0:50Audience: Dead.
-
0:50 - 0:51Not dead.
-
0:51 - 0:52(Laughter)
-
0:52 - 0:53Not dead.
-
0:53 - 0:55The end of the story is happy.
-
0:55 - 0:57The end of the story is happy.
-
0:57 - 0:58Amazing job, A-pluses all around.
-
0:58 - 1:00Give yourself a big round of applause.
-
1:00 - 1:02(Applause)
-
1:03 - 1:05So, now that we're all done with that,
-
1:05 - 1:07I want everybody
just to pause for a moment. -
1:07 - 1:10How did we all know
the exact same answers? -
1:11 - 1:13How did I know
that you'd give those answers? -
1:13 - 1:15Because I've told that story now
-
1:15 - 1:18to tens of thousands of people
across 14 different countries. -
1:18 - 1:22And despite all the different ages,
backgrounds, different parts of the world, -
1:23 - 1:27nearly everybody always
answers the exact same way. -
1:29 - 1:30And what exactly do you call
-
1:30 - 1:33this thing we just recited
from the top of our head anyway? -
1:34 - 1:37I call it the script
-
1:37 - 1:40because it feels like
a prescription we've been given -
1:40 - 1:42for how to live a good life.
-
1:42 - 1:47It serves as our belief system
around everything we're supposed to do -
1:47 - 1:48and our internal measuring stick.
-
1:48 - 1:52It kind of gauges how well or not so well
-
1:52 - 1:54we feel we're doing in life.
-
1:54 - 1:58It's the thing that makes some of us
feel like we're failing -
1:58 - 2:01if we don't get certain letters
on a report card -
2:01 - 2:03or aren't married with kids by age 35
-
2:04 - 2:06or the only way we can be successful
-
2:06 - 2:11is if we're a lawyer or a doctor
or a rapper or a pro athlete. -
2:11 - 2:12You see, aware of it or not,
-
2:12 - 2:16we all have ingrained in us a script
-
2:16 - 2:18that we're following every single day.
-
2:19 - 2:23But the question is why,
and where did this script come from? -
2:24 - 2:26And the big question,
-
2:26 - 2:30How is it that all of us,
as different individuals -
2:30 - 2:35with our own unique set
of talents, gifts, goals, -
2:35 - 2:39are all expected to follow
the exact same script? -
2:41 - 2:44You see, I've spent half of my life
searching for answers to these questions. -
2:44 - 2:46And what I found may surprise you.
-
2:47 - 2:49Let me go back in time to a moment
-
2:49 - 2:52where I had no idea there was even
such a thing as the script. -
2:52 - 2:54So, growing up I was
kind of a scrawny kid. -
2:54 - 2:57But even then, I knew
I wanted a lot out of life. -
2:57 - 2:59Call it success, happiness, meaning.
-
2:59 - 3:02How many of you guys remember
wanting to be successful, growing up? -
3:03 - 3:05I grew up in a good traditional household.
-
3:05 - 3:09My mom, a school principal;
my dad, a police officer. -
3:09 - 3:12Yeah, a cop and a principal as parents.
-
3:12 - 3:15Not meant to be a joke,
but I appreciate you laughing at my pain. -
3:15 - 3:16Thank you.
-
3:16 - 3:19And they gave me the script
we all just recited: -
3:19 - 3:21here it is, the prescription for life.
-
3:21 - 3:22And who was I to argue?
-
3:22 - 3:25So I followed it to a tee.
-
3:25 - 3:29I was the outstanding sixth grader award
in my elementary school. -
3:29 - 3:31I was the student body
president at my high school, -
3:31 - 3:33graduated with a near-perfect GPA,
-
3:33 - 3:35went to a highly academic university.
-
3:35 - 3:38Got a pre-law degree,
cum laude in a total of three years. -
3:39 - 3:42Yeah, you say wow, I say why.
-
3:42 - 3:43(Laughter)
-
3:43 - 3:48And all joking aside, it was
actually that question, Why? -
3:48 - 3:50that began to shift everything for me.
-
3:50 - 3:53I remembered the exact moment
I was interning for a district attorney, -
3:54 - 3:57sacrificing my summer,
filing giant manila folders -
3:57 - 4:00and feeling absolutely miserable.
-
4:01 - 4:04But I figured, it's just a price
I have to pay, right? -
4:04 - 4:07Then I looked around
at the people in the office -
4:07 - 4:10that had the jobs that I was supposed
to go to school to get, -
4:10 - 4:12and most of them seem miserable too.
-
4:12 - 4:15So, there I was cramming
my class schedule, -
4:15 - 4:18fighting for grades, building the resume
to get to where they were. -
4:18 - 4:20It didn't make any sense.
-
4:21 - 4:23And I had a friend stop me
-
4:24 - 4:26and ask me a very simple question.
-
4:27 - 4:29He said, "Blake, why are you
doing all of this?" -
4:31 - 4:34And the only answer that I had
-
4:34 - 4:38is "Isn't this what I'm supposed to do?"
-
4:39 - 4:41I hated that.
-
4:42 - 4:45You see, that was the moment
where I first became aware -
4:45 - 4:48that all my life,
I'd been following a script -
4:48 - 4:49without even realizing it
-
4:49 - 4:53and without ever questioning
if it was even the right script for me. -
4:54 - 4:55Sound familiar?
-
4:56 - 4:58So, I began questioning everything.
-
4:58 - 5:01I was like that kid that constantly
asked, ''Why, Why, Why?'' -
5:01 - 5:02I wanted answers.
-
5:02 - 5:04Books, seminars,
documentaries, you named it, -
5:04 - 5:06I read it or watched it.
-
5:06 - 5:08I want to save you all of that time
-
5:08 - 5:13and share with you three important
things that I learned about the script. -
5:13 - 5:16First, there's always been a script.
-
5:16 - 5:18Study civilizations across the world,
-
5:18 - 5:22and you'll see that younger generations
are always taught a life script -
5:22 - 5:25based on what the economy
and society needed at that time. -
5:25 - 5:28No, we're not handed a piece of paper
titled ''The Script'' on top, -
5:28 - 5:30but it gets communicated to us
-
5:31 - 5:35through the people around us,
our education and so on. -
5:35 - 5:37And ultimately, that script will determine
-
5:37 - 5:40how most people will
live their entire life. -
5:41 - 5:45It's always been that way,
just nobody seems to talk about it. -
5:45 - 5:47Second, shift happens.
-
5:47 - 5:49(Laughter)
-
5:49 - 5:52In other words, throughout history,
the script changes. -
5:52 - 5:55For example, go back to
when our nation was founded. -
5:55 - 5:57Our economy was largely
built on agriculture. -
5:57 - 5:58So what did we need?
-
5:58 - 6:00Successful farms.
-
6:00 - 6:02So from the time a kid
could carry a bucket, -
6:02 - 6:04they were taught what they needed
to know to support farming. -
6:04 - 6:07Let's call it the farm-work script.
-
6:07 - 6:10But then as technology advanced,
we needed less people on the farm. -
6:10 - 6:13So that by the early 1900s,
-
6:13 - 6:16industry jobs had actually
passed agricultural jobs -
6:16 - 6:17for the first time.
-
6:17 - 6:18So what did we need now?
-
6:18 - 6:20Successful factories.
-
6:20 - 6:26And that required something different:
consistency, conformity. -
6:27 - 6:31This is where following
protocol became a priority. -
6:31 - 6:35And so we shifted from a farm-work
to a factory-work script -
6:36 - 6:40and designed many of the
educational, economic, political -
6:40 - 6:43and other systems still in place
today to support it all. -
6:44 - 6:46Third insight: scripts work.
-
6:46 - 6:53You see, all life scripts seem to come
with a kind of unspoken promise. -
6:54 - 6:57Follow it and you'll live a good life.
-
6:58 - 7:00It's a social contract of sorts.
-
7:00 - 7:03And there's plenty of examples
of that promise being kept. -
7:03 - 7:07After all, the farm-work script
provided a good stable life for many. -
7:08 - 7:11The factory-work script
powered an industrial revolution. -
7:11 - 7:14It's what gave birth
to the American dream. -
7:14 - 7:17There's no question that scripts worked,
-
7:17 - 7:22but all only for a period of time
until the world changes. -
7:22 - 7:27You tell me, what has changed in our world
since the early 1900s? -
7:27 - 7:28The answer would be almost what?
-
7:28 - 7:30Everything.
-
7:30 - 7:34But I'll tell you one thing that hasn't
changed in the last hundred years. -
7:34 - 7:35The script.
-
7:36 - 7:41So what happens
when the promise of the script - -
7:41 - 7:44love, success, happiness -
-
7:44 - 7:46and the reality that comes
from following it -
7:46 - 7:48start to become two very different things.
-
7:48 - 7:50Because that's what I saw.
-
7:50 - 7:53While the factory-work script
still seemed to work for some, -
7:53 - 7:54it wasn't working for everyone.
-
7:54 - 7:57It definitely didn't feel
like it was working for me. -
7:57 - 7:59And the deeper that I dug,
the more that I learned, -
7:59 - 8:01the more that I felt
like I've been lied to. -
8:01 - 8:05Unintentionally, yeah, but lied to.
-
8:07 - 8:11I realized I've been following a script
-
8:12 - 8:16written for a time that no longer existed
-
8:17 - 8:19and if I continued,
-
8:19 - 8:22would lead to a life I didn't even want.
-
8:25 - 8:26I can't be the only one.
-
8:28 - 8:31And I felt this 18 years ago.
-
8:33 - 8:35So let's fast forward to today.
-
8:35 - 8:37Although more educated,
-
8:37 - 8:41millennials now make up around 40%
of the unemployed in our country. -
8:41 - 8:44We're all familiar with that whole
midlife crisis thing. -
8:44 - 8:46But have you guys heard
of the quarter-life crisis? -
8:46 - 8:48LinkedIn just put out a new study
-
8:48 - 8:52that said 72% of young professionals,
that's three out of four, -
8:52 - 8:56have experienced a quarter-life crisis,
questioning their life decisions. -
8:57 - 8:59And this isn't just a millennial problem.
-
8:59 - 9:01Right now, the happiness index
-
9:01 - 9:04says that only one in three
Americans are very happy. -
9:04 - 9:06So if you're there thinking,
-
9:06 - 9:09"Blake, I have no idea
what you're talking about right now. -
9:09 - 9:10I'm perfectly happy,"
-
9:10 - 9:14well then, odds are the two people
next to you probably aren't. -
9:14 - 9:16Imagine what the stats would be
-
9:16 - 9:21if these studies were done
in lower income or minority communities -
9:22 - 9:23like we're sitting in right now.
-
9:24 - 9:26The results would even be more alarming.
-
9:27 - 9:29And then there's Bronnie Ware,
-
9:29 - 9:32that nurse that spent years
documenting and recording -
9:32 - 9:35the most common regrets
people had at the end of their life. -
9:35 - 9:38The number one regret of the dying:
-
9:39 - 9:42"I wish I had the courage
to live a life true to myself, -
9:42 - 9:45not the life others expected of me."
-
9:46 - 9:51You see the gap between the promise
and the reality is getting bigger. -
9:52 - 9:53Now it's easy to think,
-
9:53 - 9:56"Blake, why don't people
just pick a better script from today?" -
9:56 - 9:57Come on, let's be real.
-
9:57 - 10:00A lot of people are trying,
but most people feel stuck. -
10:01 - 10:05I found that most people that are stuck
fall into one of two camps. -
10:05 - 10:08I call the first camp the traditionalist.
-
10:08 - 10:10You're still holding onto the old script.
-
10:10 - 10:12You did everything right,
-
10:12 - 10:16but there's a part of you
that just feels like something is missing. -
10:16 - 10:18You continue doing
what you're supposed to do, -
10:18 - 10:21hoping that one day it will all pay off.
-
10:21 - 10:24This is a camp of a lot
of boomers, older gen X-ers, -
10:24 - 10:27millennials that don't want
to piss off their parents. -
10:27 - 10:28I know this camp well.
-
10:28 - 10:30I lived in it for 18 years of life.
-
10:30 - 10:34How many of you guys know people
in the traditionals camp right now? -
10:34 - 10:36The second camp I call the rebels.
-
10:36 - 10:38You rebel against the old script.
-
10:38 - 10:40You know something is missing,
-
10:40 - 10:43but you don't quite have
a new proven script to follow. -
10:43 - 10:45You might feel misunderstood by others,
-
10:45 - 10:47maybe sometimes doubt yourself,
-
10:47 - 10:50but you're hoping that one day,
you'll figure it all out. -
10:50 - 10:52I know this camp well too.
-
10:52 - 10:54I remember, actually,
when I graduated college, -
10:54 - 10:57all my family and friends
seemed to ask the exact same question. -
10:57 - 10:59They're like, "Blake,
so what are going to do now?" -
10:59 - 11:02There's me, graduated early
with honors, great resume. -
11:02 - 11:05My answer, "I think I'm going
to be an entrepreneur." -
11:05 - 11:06(Laughter)
-
11:06 - 11:08People thought I was crazy.
-
11:08 - 11:11How many of you guys know
people in the rebel camp? -
11:11 - 11:13By the way, these two camps
might help explain -
11:13 - 11:16some of the tension we're seeing
between generations today. -
11:16 - 11:20I feel like we're stuck in a generational
yelling match over a bad phone connection. -
11:20 - 11:24You got older generations saying,
"Just follow the script." -
11:24 - 11:29Younger generation is trying
to yell back, "It's not working!" -
11:29 - 11:32Older generations,
"They're not listening." -
11:32 - 11:35Younger generations yelling,
"It's not working!" -
11:36 - 11:37I guess me being born in the early '80s
-
11:37 - 11:41puts me right in the middle
as a getting-gray-hair millennial. -
11:41 - 11:42(Laughter)
-
11:42 - 11:44I feel like I can hear
both sides of the conversation -
11:44 - 11:47and just want to help
the worlds come together. -
11:47 - 11:49Despite who's right, both feel stuck.
-
11:49 - 11:51Both are missing the same thing.
-
11:51 - 11:53Both need a shift.
-
11:55 - 11:58Good news is there's a third camp
you can join today. -
11:58 - 12:00I call it the creators.
-
12:01 - 12:04You're very aware of the old script
that's being passed down, -
12:04 - 12:08but just know that if followed unfiltered,
it's not going to work for you. -
12:08 - 12:11So you take the parts you want,
leave out what you don't, -
12:11 - 12:14find what else you need
and create your own way. -
12:15 - 12:20This is where I found the life and success
that I've enjoyed for a over a decade now. -
12:21 - 12:24Like making my first
million before age 25. -
12:24 - 12:27Doing that tens of times over by age 30.
-
12:27 - 12:31And while money is important,
quality of life is about so much more. -
12:32 - 12:33I love my wife.
-
12:33 - 12:35I love being a father to an amazing boy.
-
12:35 - 12:38We got a baby girl due any day now.
-
12:38 - 12:43We've been able to keep health a priority,
see the world, create new experiences, -
12:43 - 12:46focus on my career on pursuing ideas
I'm passionate about. -
12:46 - 12:48And I only share this
to say that it's possible. -
12:48 - 12:49It's what?
-
12:49 - 12:50Audience: Possible.
-
12:51 - 12:54And it can happen quicker today
than ever before. -
12:54 - 12:57Think about it, who do you know
that's crushing it right now? -
12:58 - 13:00I don't mean crushing it just in business.
-
13:00 - 13:01I mean crushing it in life.
-
13:01 - 13:02Who comes to mind?
-
13:03 - 13:06Are they following
the same script you are? -
13:07 - 13:12You see, after studying hundreds
of creators over nearly two decades, -
13:13 - 13:15I found that we all have
at least one thing in common. -
13:16 - 13:17At some point,
-
13:17 - 13:21we decided to stop trying to be
-
13:21 - 13:25the person we've been told
we're supposed to be -
13:26 - 13:29and to become the person
we're meant to be. -
13:30 - 13:34We shifted our script, and you can too.
-
13:35 - 13:36Let me ask you guys,
-
13:36 - 13:38If the you of today could go back in time
-
13:38 - 13:40and have a conversation
with your younger self, -
13:40 - 13:43what part of your script would you change?
-
13:43 - 13:48How much more of your life
needs to go by before you make that shift? -
13:48 - 13:50So by now, you guys are thinking,
-
13:50 - 13:52"Blake, I get it already.
Just give it to me. -
13:52 - 13:54So what's the new script?"
-
13:54 - 13:57After everything I just said up here,
I'd be hypocritical to say, -
13:57 - 13:59"Okay, here's your new
one-script-fits-all." -
13:59 - 14:01So, no, I'm not going to give you
-
14:01 - 14:03a prescription of what you're
supposed to do. -
14:04 - 14:07My mission though is to inspire you
-
14:07 - 14:10to start discovering for yourself
who you're meant to be -
14:10 - 14:13and to shift the script you need
to be that person every single day. -
14:14 - 14:17And I actually just gave you
everything you need. -
14:18 - 14:21So, three things you can do
to begin immediately. -
14:21 - 14:23Number one, admit there's a script.
-
14:23 - 14:26There's massive power
in just the awareness. -
14:26 - 14:28Realizing there's a script can feel like
-
14:28 - 14:31someone just turned the lights on
for the first time all your life. -
14:32 - 14:34But once you know you're following one,
-
14:34 - 14:36you can begin to question
if it's the right one. -
14:36 - 14:38Number two, ask why.
-
14:38 - 14:40Why do you think that?
-
14:40 - 14:42Why do you do that?
-
14:42 - 14:43Why do you care?
-
14:43 - 14:46Start questioning the script
that you're following every day -
14:46 - 14:47and be honest with yourself.
-
14:47 - 14:50Is it productive or destructive?
-
14:50 - 14:55Is it just because you're supposed to,
or is it something you're meant to? -
14:56 - 15:00And ultimately, is it moving you toward
or away the life that you want? -
15:01 - 15:04And lastly, become a creator.
-
15:04 - 15:06Now, if you are the rebel
or the traditionals right now, -
15:06 - 15:09and you're perfectly happy
with everything going on, -
15:09 - 15:10by all means, carry on.
-
15:10 - 15:13But if you felt the way I did,
you're looking for something new, -
15:13 - 15:15become a creator.
-
15:15 - 15:18Some of you will have the passion
to go create new things. -
15:18 - 15:23Contents, products, technologies.
brands, businesses. -
15:23 - 15:26Whole new carriers, entire new industries.
-
15:26 - 15:31But all of you have the potential
to create your life your way. -
15:32 - 15:34And that's the power
of becoming a creator. -
15:34 - 15:37Maybe start with the script
that we recited earlier, -
15:37 - 15:39and you'll see certain themes.
-
15:39 - 15:43You see, shifting your script
is just changing the belief system -
15:43 - 15:46you have around the major
themes in your life. -
15:46 - 15:50For example, who says that your education
only has to happen in a classroom? -
15:50 - 15:51Shift the script.
-
15:51 - 15:54Or that your happiness has to come
after some never ending series of steps? -
15:54 - 15:56Shift the script.
-
15:57 - 16:01Or that your legacy
has to be tied to your address, -
16:01 - 16:05the color of your skin
or where you came from? -
16:05 - 16:07Shift the script.
-
16:07 - 16:11They're all just scripts
that you can shift any time you want, -
16:11 - 16:13and that's the point.
-
16:13 - 16:15I'll end with one final story.
-
16:15 - 16:18Like any proud parent,
I want to share a photo of my son. -
16:18 - 16:20This is Greyson,
and he thinks he's a dinosaur. -
16:21 - 16:22He loves to go monster hunting,
-
16:22 - 16:25and he's pretty confident
he can shoot lasers out of his right arm. -
16:25 - 16:29Earlier this year, my wife and I
had a conversation with a nice woman -
16:29 - 16:31who gave us a thick
stack of papers and said, -
16:31 - 16:33"Please fill this out.
Complete the application. -
16:33 - 16:34Schedule your interview."
-
16:34 - 16:37You'd think we are qualifying
for a home loan, only we weren't. -
16:37 - 16:39We were applying for Greyson's preschool.
-
16:39 - 16:40(Laughter)
-
16:40 - 16:42Later that night, something hit me hard.
-
16:43 - 16:45The decisions my wife
and I are making right now -
16:45 - 16:48are already beginning
to shape Greyson's life script. -
16:49 - 16:52And while I have some
ideas of where to begin, -
16:52 - 16:56the minute he steps
outside our doors, he enters a world -
16:56 - 16:59where the script is going to reinforce
certain expectations about life, -
16:59 - 17:02and that's where you come in, all of you.
-
17:02 - 17:08As parents, friends, family members,
educators, influencers -
17:08 - 17:10and anyone that genuinely cares
about the impact -
17:10 - 17:13we're going to make
on our next generation. -
17:13 - 17:17Because the script you choose to follow
ultimately writes the story of your life. -
17:18 - 17:19What story will that be?
-
17:20 - 17:24And collectively, the stories of our lives
make up the world we live in. -
17:25 - 17:28Which means that if this
conversation right now -
17:28 - 17:32inspires enough of you
as individuals to shift your script, -
17:32 - 17:37then it's only a matter of time
until we shift the script. -
17:37 - 17:40And that shift is long overdue.
-
17:40 - 17:41Thank you.
-
17:41 - 17:43(Applause)
