Leave No One Behind - SDGs and Indigenous Peoples

  • 0:05 - 0:08
we are at the tipping point in the way
  • 0:08 - 0:11
    humankind inhabits the earth depending
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    on what we do next
  • 0:12 - 0:16
this could be good news or bad if we
  • 0:16 - 0:18
don't work together to fight threats to
  • 0:18 - 0:21
our existence such as climate change if
  • 0:21 - 0:24
we don't ought to end hunger poverty or
  • 0:24 - 0:27
change the ways we share and nurture our
  • 0:27 - 0:29
planet if we don't care about how we
  • 0:29 - 0:32
treat each other or about equality and
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    sustainability then our lives and
  • 0:34 - 0:40
communities may well be in jeopardy we
  • 0:40 - 0:43
urgently need to protect nature in its
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    resources for future generations
  • 0:47 - 0:51
as a first step in 2000 world leaders
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    ratified the Millennium Development
  • 0:53 - 0:57
Goals or the MDGs created to help focus
  • 0:57 - 0:59
on tackling some of the world's most
  • 0:59 - 1:04
acute problems by 2015 we had made
  • 1:04 - 1:07
significant progress in areas such as
  • 1:07 - 1:11
    gender parity in primary education
  • 1:11 - 1:15
reduction in child mortality access to
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    pipe drinking water
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    however indigenous peoples were left
  • 1:19 - 1:21
behind and much remains to be done if we
  • 1:21 - 1:25
are to uplift those still in poverty
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    marginalized and discriminated and
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    achieve sustainable development for all
  • 1:31 - 1:35
in 2015 the successor to the MDGs was
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    agreed following a global consultation
  • 1:37 - 1:39
with over a hundred and fifty world
  • 1:39 - 1:43
leaders and with major civil groups
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    including indigenous peoples under the
  • 1:45 - 1:51
umbrella of the world we won the result
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    is the sustainable development goals
  • 1:53 - 1:57
also referred to as the 2030 agenda or
  • 1:57 - 2:03
the SDGs this ambitious set of goals is
  • 2:03 - 2:06
a guide and framework for what we
  • 2:06 - 2:08
collectively must achieve over the next
  • 2:08 - 2:11
15 years to bring about a fair
  • 2:11 - 2:15
and sustainable world the SDGs are
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    comprehensive in their objectives and
  • 2:17 - 2:20
scope they include all nations rich and
  • 2:20 - 2:25
    poor and promote partnership
  • 2:25 - 2:29
    collaboration and participation of all
  • 2:29 - 2:34
citizens the 2030 agenda commits to
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    leave no one behind
  • 2:35 - 2:38
particularly the poorest and the most
  • 2:38 - 2:44
marginalized of our communities the 2030
  • 2:44 - 2:47
agenda comprises of 17 ambitious goals
  • 2:47 - 2:51
    promoting sustainability empowerment
  • 2:51 - 2:55
equity and respect for human rights
  • 2:56 - 3:01
let's look at each of the goals no
  • 3:01 - 3:05

  • 3:05 - 3:08

  • 3:12 - 3:17
affordable and clean energy decent work
  • 3:17 - 3:21

  • 3:21 - 3:25
    and infrastructure reduced inequalities
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    sustainable cities and communities
  • 3:28 - 3:32
    responsible consumption and production
  • 3:32 - 3:36
climate action life below water life on
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    land peace justice and strong
  • 3:39 - 3:43
    institutions partnerships for the goals
  • 3:43 - 3:47
    these are the sustainable development
  • 3:47 - 3:51
goals but there are cautions too for our
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    indigenous societies the goals of
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    economic development in
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    industrialization must be managed
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    carefully to avoid violation of
  • 4:00 - 4:03
    indigenous land rights and ensure
  • 4:03 - 4:07
    equitable use of resources
  • 4:07 - 4:10
    currently countries are creating new
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    national development plans with the
  • 4:13 - 4:14
    commitment to inclusion and
  • 4:14 - 4:20
    participation as indigenous peoples we
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    must engage in these national
  • 4:21 - 4:24
discussions and decisions this is a
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    unique opportunity for indigenous
  • 4:26 - 4:29
peoples to confirm our place in the
  • 4:29 - 4:31
future of the planet and not to be left
  • 4:31 - 4:38
behind who are we there are more than
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    370 million indigenous peoples
  • 4:40 - 4:43
throughout the world we manage many
  • 4:43 - 4:46
    different ecosystems and traditional
  • 4:46 - 4:49
occupations where can you find us
  • 4:49 - 4:53
    plains grasslands and tundra oceans
  • 4:53 - 4:59
deserts forests mountains the SDGs are
  • 4:59 - 5:02
relevant and applicable to the world's
  • 5:02 - 5:04
indigenous peoples directly and as a
  • 5:04 - 5:09
contributor to their success they create
  • 5:09 - 5:11
a framework that will guide governments
  • 5:11 - 5:16
private sector and civil society to
  • 5:16 - 5:18
create a better world and mutually
  • 5:18 - 5:21
    beneficial relationships with and for
  • 5:21 - 5:25
    indigenous peoples we as indigenous
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    peoples have been conserving our
  • 5:27 - 5:30
    resources sustainably for centuries not
  • 5:30 - 5:33
only for our survival but also as part
  • 5:33 - 5:36
of our identities culture and well-being
  • 5:36 - 5:40
of humanity and the planet this must
  • 5:40 - 5:42
continue to be protected ensuring that
  • 5:42 - 5:45
indigenous peoples and our ways of life
  • 5:45 - 5:50
form a core element of our common future
  • 5:52 - 5:56
what do we as indigenous peoples require
  • 5:56 - 6:00
in order to take part in meaningful ways
  • 6:00 - 6:04
    education capacity building partnerships
  • 6:04 - 6:06
with governments based on the respect
  • 6:06 - 6:09
for our rights and trusted partners a
  • 6:09 - 6:11
place at the negotiating tables at
  • 6:11 - 6:17
national regional and global levels this
  • 6:17 - 6:20
aggregation of data based on ethnicity
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    without properly collecting and
  • 6:22 - 6:24
    filtering data indigenous peoples could
  • 6:24 - 6:27
be misrepresented or simply remain in
  • 6:27 - 6:30
physical indigenous peoples need to be
  • 6:30 - 6:32
part of reporting and review processes
  • 6:32 - 6:35
    from national to global platforms
  • 6:35 - 6:39
already initiatives are being put into
  • 6:39 - 6:41
place to address this such as the
  • 6:41 - 6:44
    indigenous navigator which monitors the
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    level of recognition and implementation
  • 6:46 - 6:53
of their rights the SDGs already have
  • 6:53 - 6:55
shoulders to stand on in the form of the
  • 6:55 - 6:58
United Nations declaration on the rights
  • 6:58 - 7:01
of indigenous peoples and other UN
  • 7:01 - 7:05
    instruments these should be fully
  • 7:05 - 7:08
    integrated into the SDGs implementation
  • 7:08 - 7:11
    particularly involving indigenous
