Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man of math - James Earle

    symbols of the Renaissance.

    But why?

    It's a simple pen and ink drawing, right?

    Wrong!

    Let's start to answer this question

    with a math problem.

    I know how to calculate the area of a circle.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    I take the value for pi
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    and multiply it by the radius squared.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    I also know how to take the area of a square.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    I multiply the base by itself.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    But, how can I take the area of a circle
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    and create a square with an equal area?
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    This is a problem often called "squaring a circle"
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    that was first proposed in the ancient world.
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    And like many of ideas of the ancient world,
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    it was given new life during the Renaissance.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    As it turns out,
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    this problem is impossible to solve
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    because of the nature of pi,
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    but that's another story.

    Leonardo's sketch,
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    which is influenced by the writings
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    of a Roman architect, Vitruvius,
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    places a man firmly at the center
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    of a circle and a square.
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    Vitruvius claimed the navel
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    is the center of the human body
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    and that if one takes a compass
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    and places the fixed point on the navel,
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    a circle can be drawn perfectly around the body.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    Additionally, Vitruvius recognized
  • 1:16 - 1:17
    that arm span and height
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    have a nearly perfect correspondence in the human body,
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    thus placing the body perfectly inside a square as well.

    Leonardo used the ideas of Vitruvius
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    to solve the problem of squaring a circle metaphorically
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    using mankind as the area for both shapes.

    Leonardo wasn't just thinking about Vitruvius, though.
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    There was an intellectual movement
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    in Italy at the time
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    called Neoplatonism.
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    This movement took an old concept
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    from the 4th century developed by Plato and Aristotle,
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    called "The Great Chain of Being".
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    This belief holds that the universe is a hierarchy
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    resembling a chain,
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    and that chain starts at the top with God,
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    then travels down through the angels,
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    planets,
  • 1:50 - 1:50
    stars,
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    and all lifeforms
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    before ending with demons and devils.
  • 1:54 - 1:55
    Early in this philosophic movement,
  • 1:55 - 1:58
    it was thought that mankind's place in this chain
  • 1:58 - 1:59
    was exactly in the center.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    Because humans have a mortal body
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    accompanied by an immortal soul,
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    we divide the universe nicely in half.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    Around the time Leonardo sketched
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    the Vitruvian Man, however,
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    a Neoplatonist named Pico della Mirandola
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    had a different idea.
  • 2:12 - 2:13
    He pried mankind off the chain
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    and claimed that humans have a unique ability
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    to take any position they want.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    Pico claimed that God desired
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    a being capable of comprehending
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    the beautiful and complicated universe he had created.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    This led to the creation of mankind,
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    which he placed at the center of the universe
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    with the ability to take whatever form he pleases.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    Mankind, according to Pico,
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    can crawl down the chain and behave like an animal
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    or crawl up the chain and behave like a god,
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    it's our choice.
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    Looking back at the sketch,
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    we can see that by changing the position of the man,
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    he can fill the irreconcillible areas
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    of a circle and a square.
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    If geometry is the language the universe is written in,
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    then this sketch seems to say
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    we can exist within all its elements.
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    Mankind can fill whatever shape
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    he pleases geometrically
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    and philosophically as well.
  • 2:55 - 2:56
    In this one sketch,
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    Leondardo was able to combine
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    the mathematics,
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    religion,
  • 2:59 - 2:59
    philosophy,
  • 2:59 - 3:00
    architecture,
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    and artistic skill of his age.
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    No wonder it has become such an icon
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    for the entire time period.
