How your brain hallucinates your conscious reality

    for the third time in my life,

    I ceased to exist.

    I was having a small operation,
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    and my brain was filling with anesthetic.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    I remember a sense
    of detachment and falling apart
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    and a coldness.
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    And then I was back,
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    drowsy and disoriented,
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    but definitely there.
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    When you wake from a deep sleep,
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    you might feel confused about the time
    or anxious about oversleeping,
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    but there's always a basic sense
    of time having passed,
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    of a continuity between then and now.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    Coming out from
    anesthesia is very different.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    I could have been under for five minutes,
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    five hours,
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    five years,
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    or even 50 years.
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    I simply wasn't there.
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    It was total obliviion.
  • 0:40 - 0:41
    Anesthesia --
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    it's a modern kind of magic.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    It turns people into objects,
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    and then we hope,
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    back again into people.
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    In this process
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    is one of the greatest remaining
    mysteries in science and philosophy.
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    How does consciousness happen?
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    Somehow, within each of our brains,
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    the combined activity
    of many billions of neurons,
  • 0:59 - 1:03
    each one a tiny biological machine,
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    is generating a conscious experience.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    And not just any conscious experience --
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    your conscious experience
    right here and right now.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    How does this happen?
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    Answering this question is so important
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    because consciousness
    for each of us is all there is.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    Without it there's no world,
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    there's no self,
  • 1:20 - 1:21
    there's nothing at all.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    And when we suffer,
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    we suffer consciously
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    whether it's through
    mental illness or pain.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    And if we can experience
    joy and suffering,
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    what about other animals?
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    Might they be conscious, too?
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    Do they also have a sense of self?
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    And as computers get faster and smarter,
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    maybe there will come a point,
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    maybe not too far away,
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    when my iPhone develops
    a sense of its own existence.
  • 1:43 - 1:48
    I actually think the prospects
    for a conscious AI are pretty remote.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    And I think this because
    my research is telling me
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    that consciousness has less to do
    with pure intelligence
  • 1:53 - 1:58
    and more to do with our nature
    as living and breathing organisms.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    Consciousness and intelligence
    are very different things.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    You don't have to be smart to suffer,
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    but you probably do have to be alive.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    In the story I'm going to tell you,
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    our conscious experiences
    of the world around us,
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    and of ourselves within it,
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    are kinds of controlled hallucinations
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    that happen with, through
    and because of our living bodies.
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    Now, you might have heard
    that we know nothing
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    about how the brain and body
    give rise to consciousness.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    Some people even say it's beyond
    the reach of science all together.
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    But in fact,
  • 2:28 - 2:33
    the last 25 years have seen an explosion
    of scientific work in this area.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    If you come to my lab
    at the University of Sussex,
  • 2:36 - 2:40
    you'll find scientists
    from all different disciplines,
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    and sometimes even philosophers.
  • 2:42 - 2:46
    All of us together trying to understand
    how conscioussness happens
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    and what happens when it goes wrong.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    The strategy is very simple.
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    I'd like you to think about consciousness
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    in the way that we've
    come to think about life.
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    At one time,
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    people thought the property
    of being alive could not be explained
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    by physics and chemistry --
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    that life had to be more
    than just mechanism.
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    But people no longer think that.
  • 3:05 - 3:06
    As biologists got on with the job
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    of explaining the properties
    of living systems
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    in terms of physics and chemistry --
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    things like metabolism,
    reproduction, homeostasis --
  • 3:14 - 3:18
    the basic mystery of what life is
    started to fade away,
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    and people didn't propose
    any more magical solutions,
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    like a force of life or an élan vital.
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    So as with life,
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    so with consciousness.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    Once we start explaining its properties
  • 3:28 - 3:32
    in terms of things happening
    inside brains and bodies,
  • 3:32 - 3:36
    the apparently insoluble mystery
    of what consciousness is
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    should start to fade away.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    At least that's the plan.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    So let's get started.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    What are the properties of consciousness?
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    What should a science
    of consciousness try to explain?
  • 3:46 - 3:50
    Well, for today I'd just like to think
    of consciousness in two different ways.
  • 3:50 - 3:52
    There are experiences
    of the world around us,
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    full of sights, sounds and smells,
  • 3:54 - 3:58
    there's multisensory, panoramic,
    3D, fully immersive inner movie.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    And then there's conscious self.
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    The specific experience
    of being you or being me.
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    The lead character in this inner movie,
  • 4:06 - 4:09
    and probably the aspect of consciousness
    we all cling to most tightly.
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    Let's start with experiences
    of the world around us,
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    and with the important idea
    of the brain as a prediction engine.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    Imagine being a brain.
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    You're locked inside a bony skull,
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    trying to figure what's
    out there in the world.
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    There are no lights inside the skull.
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    There's no sound either.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    All you've got to go on is streams
    of electrical impulses
  • 4:29 - 4:32
    which are only indirectly related
    to things in the world,
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    whatever they may be.
  • 4:34 - 4:35
    So perception --
  • 4:35 - 4:36
    figuring out what's there --
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    has to be a process of informed guess work
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    in which the brain combines
    these sensory signals
  • 4:42 - 4:46
    with its prior expectations or beliefs
    about the way the world is
  • 4:46 - 4:49
    to form its best guess
    of what caused those signals.
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    The brain doesn't hear sound or see light.
  • 4:52 - 4:57
    What we perceive is its best guess
    of what's out there in the world.
  • 4:57 - 5:00
    Let me give you a couple
    of examples of all this.
  • 5:01 - 5:02
    You might have seen this illusion before,
  • 5:02 - 5:05
    but I'd like you to think
    about it in a new way.
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    If you look at those two patches, A and B,
  • 5:07 - 5:11
    they should look to you to be
    very different shades of gray, right?
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    But they are in fact
    exactly the same shade.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    And I can illustrate this.
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    If I put up a second version
    of the image here,
  • 5:18 - 5:21
    and join the two patches
    with a gray-colored bar,
  • 5:21 - 5:23
    you can see there's no difference.
  • 5:23 - 5:24
    It's exactly the same shade of gray.
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    And if you still don't believe me,
  • 5:26 - 5:29
    I'll bring the bar across
    and join them up.
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    It's a single colored block of gray,
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    there's no difference at all.
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    This isn't any kind of magic trick.
  • 5:35 - 5:36
    It's the same shade of gray,
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    but take it away again,
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    and it looks different.
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    So what's happening here
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    is that the brain is using
    its prior expectations
  • 5:44 - 5:47
    built deeply into the circuits
    of the visual cortex
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    that a cast shadow dims
    the appearance of a surface,
  • 5:49 - 5:53
    so that we see B as lighter
    than it really is.
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    Here's one more example,
  • 5:56 - 5:59
    which shows just how quickly
    the brain can use new predictions
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    to change what we consciously experience.
  • 6:01 - 6:03

    OK, so what's going on here?

    The remarkable thing is the sensory
    information coming into the brain
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    hasn't changed at all.
  • 6:49 - 6:51
    All that's changed is your
    brain's best guess
  • 6:51 - 6:53
    of the causes of that sensory information.
  • 6:53 - 6:56
    And that changes
    what you consciously hear.
  • 6:57 - 7:00
    All this puts the brain
    basis of perception
  • 7:00 - 7:01
    in a bit of a different light.
  • 7:01 - 7:06
    Instead of perception depending largely
    on signals coming into the brain
  • 7:06 - 7:07
    from the outside world,
  • 7:07 - 7:08
    it depends as much,
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    if not more,
  • 7:10 - 7:14
    on perceptual predictions
    flowing in the opposite direction.
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    We don't just passively
    perceive the world,
  • 7:16 - 7:18
    we actively generate it.
  • 7:18 - 7:21
    The world we experience
    comes as much if not more
  • 7:21 - 7:22
    from the inside out
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    as from the outside in.
  • 7:24 - 7:26
    Let me give you one more
    example of perception
  • 7:26 - 7:29
    as this active, constructive process.
  • 7:31 - 7:35
    Here we've combined immersive
    virtual reality with image processing
  • 7:35 - 7:38
    to simulate the effects of overly
    strong perceptual predictions
  • 7:38 - 7:39
    on our experience.
  • 7:39 - 7:40
    In this panoramic video,

    we've tranformed the world --
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    which is in this case Sussex campus --
  • 7:44 - 7:46
    into a psychedilic playground.

    We've processed the footage using
    an alogrithm based on Google's Deep Dream

    to simulate the effects
    of overly strong perceptual predictions.

    In this case, to see dogs.
  • 7:56 - 7:58
    You can see this is a very strange thing.
  • 7:58 - 8:00
    When perceptual
    predictions are too strong,
  • 8:00 - 8:01
    as they are here,
  • 8:01 - 8:05
    the result looks very much like the kinds
    of hallucinations people might report
  • 8:05 - 8:06
    in altered states,
  • 8:06 - 8:09
    or perhaps even in psychosis.
  • 8:09 - 8:11
    Think about this for a minute.
  • 8:11 - 8:16
    If hallucination is a kind
    of uncontrolled perception,
  • 8:16 - 8:21
    then perception right here and right now
    is also a kind of hallucination,
  • 8:21 - 8:23
    but a controlled hallucination
  • 8:23 - 8:26
    in which the brain's predictions
    are being reigned in
  • 8:26 - 8:28
    by sensory information from the world.
  • 8:28 - 8:31
    In fact, we're all
    hallucinating all the time,
  • 8:31 - 8:33
    including right now.
  • 8:33 - 8:36
    It's just that when we agree
    about our hallucinations,
  • 8:36 - 8:37
    we call that reality.
  • 8:38 - 8:40
    (Laughter)
  • 8:41 - 8:45
    Now I'm going to tell you that your
    experience of being a self,
  • 8:45 - 8:47
    the specific experience of being you,
  • 8:47 - 8:50
    is also a controlled hallucination
    generated by the brain.
  • 8:50 - 8:52
    This seems a very strange idea, right?
  • 8:52 - 8:54
    Yes, visual illusions
    might deceive my eyes,
  • 8:54 - 8:58
    but how could I be deceived
    about what it means to be me?
  • 8:58 - 8:59
    For most of us,
  • 8:59 - 9:02
    the experience of being a person
    is so familiar, so unified
  • 9:02 - 9:03
    and so continuous
  • 9:03 - 9:06
    that it's difficult not
    to take it for granted.
  • 9:06 - 9:07
    But we shouldn't take it for granted.
  • 9:07 - 9:11
    There are in fact many different ways
    we experience being a self.
  • 9:11 - 9:13
    There's the experience of having a body
  • 9:13 - 9:14
    and of being a body.
  • 9:14 - 9:16
    There are experiences
    of perceiving the world
  • 9:16 - 9:18
    from a first person point of view.
  • 9:18 - 9:21
    There are experiences
    of intending to do things
  • 9:21 - 9:24
    and of being the cause of things
    that happen in the world.
  • 9:24 - 9:28
    And there are experiences of being
    a continuous and distinctive person
  • 9:28 - 9:29
    over time,
  • 9:29 - 9:32
    built from a rich set of memories
    and social interactions.
  • 9:32 - 9:34
    Many experiments show,
  • 9:34 - 9:36
    and psychiatrists and
    neurologists know very well
  • 9:36 - 9:39
    that these different ways in which
    we experience being a self
  • 9:39 - 9:41
    can all come apart.
  • 9:41 - 9:44
    What this means is the basic
    background experience
  • 9:44 - 9:48
    of being a unified self is a rather
    fragile construction of the brain.
  • 9:49 - 9:50
    Another experience,
  • 9:50 - 9:51
    which just like all others,
  • 9:51 - 9:53
    requires explanation.
  • 9:53 - 9:55
    So let's return to the bodily self.
  • 9:55 - 9:58
    How does the brain generate
    the experience of being a body
  • 9:58 - 9:59
    and of having a body?
  • 9:59 - 10:01
    Well, just the same principles apply.
  • 10:01 - 10:02
    The brain makes its best guess
  • 10:02 - 10:05
    about what is and what is not
    part of its body.
  • 10:05 - 10:09
    There's a beautiful experiment
    in neuroscience to illustrate this.
  • 10:09 - 10:11
    And unlike most neuroscience experiments,
  • 10:11 - 10:12
    this is one you can do at home.
  • 10:12 - 10:15
    All you need is one of these.
  • 10:15 - 10:16
    (Laughter)
  • 10:16 - 10:18
    And a couple of paint brushes.
  • 10:19 - 10:20
    In the rubber hand illusion,
  • 10:20 - 10:22
    a person's real hand is hidden from view,
  • 10:22 - 10:25
    and that fake rubber hand
    is placed in front of them.
  • 10:25 - 10:29
    Then both hands are simultaneously
    stroked with a paintbrush
  • 10:29 - 10:31
    while the person stares at the fake hand.
  • 10:32 - 10:33
    Now for most people,
  • 10:33 - 10:34
    after a while,
  • 10:34 - 10:36
    this leads to the very uncanny sensation
  • 10:36 - 10:39
    that the fake hand is
    in fact part of their body.
  • 10:40 - 10:44
    And the idea is that the congruence
    between seeing touch and feeling touch
  • 10:44 - 10:46
    on an object that looks like hand,
  • 10:46 - 10:48
    and is roughly where a hand should be,
  • 10:48 - 10:51
    is enough evidence for the brain
    to make its best guess
  • 10:51 - 10:55
    that the fake hand is in fact
    part of the body.
  • 10:55 - 10:57
    (Laughter)

    So you can measure
    all kinds of clever things.
  • 11:06 - 11:08
    Like you can measure skin conductants
  • 11:08 - 11:09
    and [startle] responses,
  • 11:09 - 11:10
    but there's no need.
  • 11:10 - 11:13
    It's clear the guy in blue
    has assimilated the fake hand.
  • 11:13 - 11:17
    This means that even experiences
    of what our body is
  • 11:17 - 11:18
    is kind of best guessing --
  • 11:18 - 11:21
    a kind of controlled
    hallucination by the brain.
  • 11:22 - 11:24
    There's one more thing.
  • 11:24 - 11:28
    We don't just experience our bodies
    as objects in the world from the outside,
  • 11:28 - 11:30
    we also experience them from within.
  • 11:30 - 11:35
    We all experience the sense
    of being a body from the inside.
  • 11:35 - 11:38
    And sensory signals coming from
    the inside of the body
  • 11:38 - 11:42
    are continually telling the brain
    about the state of the internal organs,
  • 11:42 - 11:43
    how the heart is doing,
  • 11:43 - 11:45
    what the blood pressure is like,
  • 11:45 - 11:46
    lots of things.
  • 11:46 - 11:47
    This kind of perception,
  • 11:47 - 11:49
    which we call interoception,
  • 11:49 - 11:50
    is rather overlooked.
  • 11:50 - 11:52
    But it's critically important
  • 11:52 - 11:55
    because perception and regulation
    of the internal state of the body --
  • 11:55 - 11:57
    well, that's what keeps us alive.
  • 11:58 - 12:00
    Here's another version
    of the rubber hand illusion.
  • 12:00 - 12:02
    This is from our lab at Sussex.
  • 12:02 - 12:05
    And here, people see a virtual
    reality version of their hand,
  • 12:05 - 12:07
    which flashes [red and back]
  • 12:07 - 12:10
    either in time or out of time
    with their heartbeat.
  • 12:10 - 12:12
    And when it's flashing in time
    with their heartbeat,
  • 12:12 - 12:16
    people have a stronger sense
    that it's in fact part of their body.
  • 12:16 - 12:19
    So experiences of having a body
    are deeply grounded
  • 12:19 - 12:23
    in perceiving our bodies from within.
  • 12:24 - 12:26
    There's one last thing I want
    to draw your attention to,
  • 12:26 - 12:30
    which is that experiences of the body
    from the inside are very different
  • 12:30 - 12:32
    from experiences of the world around us.
  • 12:32 - 12:33
    When I look around me,
  • 12:33 - 12:35
    the world seems full of objects --
  • 12:35 - 12:37
    tables, chairs, rubber hands,
  • 12:37 - 12:38
    people,
  • 12:38 - 12:39
    [you lot] --
  • 12:39 - 12:41
    even my own body in the world,
  • 12:41 - 12:43
    I can perceive it as an object
    from the outside,
  • 12:43 - 12:45
    but my experiences
    of the body from within,
  • 12:45 - 12:47
    they're not like that at all.
  • 12:47 - 12:49
    I don't perceive my kidneys here,
  • 12:49 - 12:51
    my liver here,
  • 12:51 - 12:52
    my spleen ...
  • 12:52 - 12:54
    I don't know where my spleen is,
  • 12:54 - 12:55
    but it's somewhere.
  • 12:55 - 12:57
    I don't perceive my insides as objects.
  • 12:57 - 13:01
    In fact, I don't experience them
    much at all unless they go wrong.
  • 13:02 - 13:04
    And this is important I think.
  • 13:04 - 13:06
    Perception of the internal
    state of the body
  • 13:06 - 13:08
    isn't about figuring out what's there,
  • 13:08 - 13:10
    it's about control and regulation --
  • 13:10 - 13:14
    keeping the physiological variables
    within the tight bounds
  • 13:14 - 13:16
    that are compatible with survival.
  • 13:17 - 13:20
    When the brain uses predictions
    to figure out what's there,
  • 13:20 - 13:23
    we can see objects
    as the causes of sensations.
  • 13:23 - 13:26
    When the brain uses predictions
    to control and regulate things,
  • 13:26 - 13:30
    we experience how well
    or how badly that control is going.
  • 13:30 - 13:33
    So our most basic experiences
    of being a self,
  • 13:33 - 13:35
    of being an embodied organism,
  • 13:35 - 13:39
    are deeply grounded in the biological
    mechanisms that keep us alive.
  • 13:41 - 13:43
    When we follow this idea
    all the way through,
  • 13:43 - 13:47
    we can start to see that all
    of our conscious experiences,
  • 13:47 - 13:52
    since they all depend on the same
    mechanisms of predictive perception,
  • 13:52 - 13:55
    all stem from this basic
    drive to stay alive.
  • 13:55 - 13:58
    We experience the world and ourselves
  • 13:58 - 14:01
    with, through and because of
    our living bodies.
  • 14:02 - 14:04
    Let me bring things together step-by-step.
  • 14:05 - 14:07
    What we consciously see depends
    on the brain's best guess
  • 14:07 - 14:09
    of what's out there.
  • 14:09 - 14:11
    Our experienced world
    comes from the inside out,
  • 14:11 - 14:13
    not just the outside in.
  • 14:13 - 14:16
    The rubber hand illusion shows
    that this applies to our experienes
  • 14:16 - 14:18
    of what is and what is not our body.
  • 14:19 - 14:22
    And these self-related predictions
    depend critically on sensory signals
  • 14:22 - 14:24
    coming from deep inside the body.
  • 14:25 - 14:26
    And finally,
  • 14:26 - 14:30
    experiences of being an embodied self
    are more about control and regulation
  • 14:30 - 14:33
    than figuring out what's there.
  • 14:33 - 14:36
    So our experiences of the world
    around us and ourselves within it --
  • 14:36 - 14:38
    well, they're kinds
    of controlled hallucinations
  • 14:38 - 14:42
    that have been shaped
    over millions of years of evolution
  • 14:42 - 14:45
    to keep us alive in worlds
    full of danger and opportunity.
  • 14:45 - 14:48
    We predict ourselves into existence.
  • 14:49 - 14:51
    Now I leave you with three
    implications of all this.
  • 14:52 - 14:54
    First, just as we can
    misperceive the world,
  • 14:54 - 14:56
    we can misperceive ourselves
  • 14:56 - 14:58
    when the mechanisms
    of prediction go wrong.
  • 14:58 - 15:02
    Understanding this opens many new
    opportunities in psychiatry and neurology,
  • 15:02 - 15:05
    because we can finally
    get at the mechanisms
  • 15:05 - 15:07
    rather than just treating the symptoms
  • 15:07 - 15:10
    in conditions like
    depression and schizophrenia.
  • 15:10 - 15:11
    Second:
  • 15:11 - 15:15
    what it means to be me cannot be
    reduced to or uploaded to

    however smart or sophisticated.

    We are biological, flesh-and-blood animals

    whose conscious experiences
    are shaped at all levels

    by the biological mechanisms
    that keep us alive.

    Just making computers smarter
    is not going to make the sentient.
  • 15:33 - 15:35
    Finally,
  • 15:35 - 15:37
    our own individual inner universe,
  • 15:37 - 15:38
    our way of being conscious,
  • 15:38 - 15:41
    is just one possible
    way of being conscious.
  • 15:42 - 15:44
    And even human consciousness generally --
  • 15:44 - 15:48
    it's just a tiny region in a vast space
    of possible consciousnesses.
  • 15:48 - 15:52
    Our individual self and worlds
    are unique to each of us,
  • 15:52 - 15:54
    but they're all grounded
  • 15:54 - 15:58
    in biological mechanisms shared
    with many other living creatures.
  • 15:58 - 16:04
    Now, these are fundamental changes
    in how we understand ourselves,
  • 16:04 - 16:06
    but I think they should be celebrated,
  • 16:06 - 16:07
    because as so often in science,
  • 16:07 - 16:08
    when Copernicus --
  • 16:08 - 16:10
    we're not at the center
    of the universe --
  • 16:10 - 16:12
    to Darwin --
  • 16:12 - 16:14
    we're related to all other creatures --
  • 16:14 - 16:16
    to the present day.
  • 16:17 - 16:19
    With a greater sense of understanding
  • 16:19 - 16:22
    comes a greater sense of wonder,
  • 16:22 - 16:27
    and a greater realization that we
    are part of and not apart from
  • 16:27 - 16:29
    the rest of nature.
  • 16:29 - 16:31
    And ...
  • 16:31 - 16:33
    when the end of consciousness comes,
  • 16:33 - 16:37
    there's nothing to be afraid of.
  • 16:37 - 16:38
    Nothing at all.
