into education in Ghana. -
1:16 - 1:20(Lydia) Virtual reality and simulations
may seem modern to us, -
1:20 - 1:23but the science
and the history behind them -
1:23 - 1:24are centuries old.
-
1:24 - 1:29The science behind virtual reality
was first explored in a practical sense -
1:29 - 1:31as far back as the 1800s,
-
1:32 - 1:36but some could argue that it goes
all the way back to Leonardo da Vinci -

learning is still happening, -
2:10 - 2:14and that's when my colleagues
decided to use -
2:14 - 2:16different industrial sites in Ghana.
-
2:16 - 2:19So naturally, when you're in high school,
-
2:19 - 2:20you may go to the dam
-
2:20 - 2:25or you may go
to a bottling processing factory -
2:25 - 2:31to understand industrial technologies,

2:31 - 2:34And our mission
was to capture these places -

so students do come, -
2:46 - 2:49and they're able to experience

-
2:50 - 2:57The innovation part of what we are doing
is to be able to develop the models. -

has to innovate models -
3:03 - 3:07to integrate it
into that existing technology -
3:07 - 3:10to be applicable to a specific user.
-
3:10 - 3:12So what the All Nations University
is doing -
3:12 - 3:15is that we are on the project
-
3:15 - 3:20to develop models for education
in Ghana, here. -
3:20 - 3:24(Lydia) In the university's bid

3:51 - 3:53Africa is ripe,

3:58 - 4:03And if we're able to harness
the power of our minds -
4:04 - 4:06and really put our minds together,
-
4:06 - 4:12I believe we can become innovators
and world leaders in a lot of these areas. -
4:13 - 4:16One area that is near and dear
to development, in my opinion, -
4:16 - 4:18is STEM.
-
4:18 - 4:22And simple applications of STEM
can solve our everyday problems. -
4:23 - 4:25Here, at ANU, for example,
the air quality. -
4:25 - 4:28But they make real lasting impacts,
-
4:28 - 4:30things that a lot of times
-
4:31 - 4:35people outside of Africa look down on us
-
4:35 - 4:37and thinking we're not
as advanced or developed. -
4:37 - 4:38But when we come together,

4:41 - 4:43(Lydia) Medical students, for instance,
-

-
4:49 - 4:53prior to physically stepping

5:25 - 5:28it has to do with developing
of the models, -
5:28 - 5:31and that takes up to two weeks
-
5:31 - 5:35to develop a specific model
for the learning. -
5:35 - 5:38(Lydia) These models
created by the university -
5:38 - 5:41give students a pre-industrial exposure
-
5:41 - 5:44by providing an opportunity
to learn through experience -
5:44 - 5:49in contrast to the traditional method
of reading and writing. -
5:49 - 5:51The evolution of VR
in interactive learning -
5:51 - 5:55goes a long way to influence
modern technology. -
5:55 - 6:00Our students at the ANU
are enthusiastic to explore more -
6:00 - 6:03into experiential learning techniques.
-
6:03 - 6:06The system has enhanced
my learning experience immensely. -
6:07 - 6:11Usually, we just go into classes
learning a few practicals, -
6:11 - 6:13but with the system,
-
6:13 - 6:19you can go far into learning
what exactly you want. -
6:19 - 6:21Like you have more experience

6:21 - 6:23of what you want to learn.
-
6:23 - 6:26(Lydia) All Nations University

-
6:29 - 6:32and is on the path
of massive technological innovation -
6:32 - 6:33for Africa.
-
6:34 - 6:36It calls on all universities,
-
6:36 - 6:41especially those in deprived communities
with limited access to resources, -
6:41 - 6:45to partner in developing
tailor-made virtual reality models -
6:45 - 6:48to build the skill set of their students.
-
6:48 - 6:51Nothing like this existed
in Ghana prior to-- -
6:51 - 6:53at this scale.
-
6:53 - 6:58So, a lot of times, VR has a lot
of gaming applications, -
6:58 - 7:02so you might see a lot of people using it
for recreational purposes. -
7:02 - 7:05But here, at SSTL-ANU,
-
7:05 - 7:09with the innovation
that is kind of our backbone, -
7:10 - 7:14the challenge was how can
we utilize this technology -
7:14 - 7:17to really extend the learning experience?
-
7:17 - 7:21This happened during COVID,
-
7:21 - 7:26and so what happened
was students all over the world -
7:26 - 7:28were basically shut in.
-
7:28 - 7:30They couldn't go anywhere, right?
-
7:30 - 7:35Learning that is effective
must be hands-on and immersive. -
7:35 - 7:37All Nations University
has been able to strike a balance -
7:37 - 7:41between the good old learning
that we all are used to -
7:41 - 7:44and the future of education
that we all need. -
7:44 - 7:46You have easy access to learning.
-
7:47 - 7:51You are presented with fun opportunities
as you saw with the VR display, -
7:51 - 7:56and also you have
unlimited access to information. -
7:56 - 7:59(Lydia) Universities in Africa
are assuming their proper roles -
7:59 - 8:03in leading the continent's
socio-economic development. -
8:03 - 8:06It has started
with the All Nations University. -

-
8:09 - 8:10Look out for your niche areas
-
8:10 - 8:16and promote research, development,
and innovations in Africa. -
8:16 - 8:18In most African countries,
-
8:19 - 8:21you'll notice that the industries
-
8:21 - 8:25are centralized either at the capitals
or in a particular region. -
8:26 - 8:32And then we have students
traveling from other regions -
8:32 - 8:36over hundreds of miles to this place
-
8:36 - 8:39to experience industrial training.
-
8:39 - 8:41So what we are actually doing
-
8:41 - 8:46is that we are simulating
the factories and the industries -
8:46 - 8:49on this virtual reality technology
-
8:49 - 8:51and rather taking it to the students.
-
8:51 - 8:56So, with this, the students
do not have to travel to the factory, -
