    Virtual reality and simulations
    may seem modern to us,
  • Not Synced
    but the science
    and the history behind them
  • Not Synced
    are centuries old.
  • Not Synced
    The science behind virtual reality
was first explored in a practical sense
  • Not Synced
as far back as the 1800s,
  • Not Synced
but some could argue that it goes
all the way back to Leonardo da Vinci

  • Not Synced
Even if the classroom is closed,
    learning is still happening,
  • Not Synced
    and that's when my colleagues
    decided to use
  • Not Synced
    different industrial sites in Ghana.
  • Not Synced
So naturally, when you're in high school,
  • Not Synced
you may go to the dam
  • Not Synced
or you may go to like
    a bottling processing factory
  • Not Synced
    to kind of understand
    industrial technologies, engineering, etc.
  • Not Synced
    And our mission
    was to capture these places
  • Not Synced
    and allow the students
to be able to be immersed into them.
  • Not Synced
And now we have the VR industries tour.
  • Not Synced
We're actually here in the center,
    so students do come,

The innovation part of what we are doing
is to be able to develop the models.
  • Not Synced
It is an open source technology,
  • Not Synced
    but then the innovator
    has to innovate models
  • Not Synced
    to integrate it
    into that existing technology
  • Not Synced
to be applicable to a specific user.
  • Not Synced
So what the All Nations University
    is doing
  • Not Synced
is that we are on the project
to develop models for education in Ghana.
  • Not Synced
    Here in the university's bed
    to enhance teaching and learning
  • Not Synced
and give these a practical touch.

    Africa is ripe,

I believe we can become innovators

One area that is near and dear
    to development, in my opinion,
  • Not Synced
    is STEM.
  • Not Synced
    And simple applications of STEM
    can solve our everyday problems.
  • Not Synced
Here at ANU, for example, the air quality,
but they make real lasting impacts.
  • Not Synced
Right, things that a lot of times
people outside of Africa look down on us
  • Not Synced
and thinking we're not as advanced

  • Not Synced
    But when we come together,
  • Not Synced
    we can definitely achieve
    great things together.

    Medical students, for instance,

  • Not Synced
For our technology, we have two brands.
  • Not Synced
    We have Industrial Tool
and then we have the Virtual Learning.
  • Not Synced
    For the Industrial Tool
    or the process enters

    going into the industrial site
    with our special cameras
  • Not Synced
    to take the coverage.
  • Not Synced
So for a single shoot, for a single factory,
  • Not Synced
we are looking at a process of a week
  • Not Synced
to come up with an output

  • Not Synced
    Now, for the Virtual Learning,
  • Not Synced
it has to do with developing of the models,

Usually, we just go into classes learning a few practicals,

All Nations University has taken a bold step

  • Not Synced
and is on the path of massive technological innovation for Africa.
  • Not Synced
    It calls on all universities,

to partner in developing tailor-made virtual reality models
  • Not Synced
to build the skill set of their students.
  • Not Synced
Nothing like this existed in Ghana prior to this scale.
  • Not Synced
So, a lot of times VR has a lot of gaming applications,
  • Not Synced
so you might see a lot of people using it for recreational purposes.
  • Not Synced
But here at SSTL ANU, with the innovation that is kind of our backbone,
  • Not Synced
the challenge was kind of put out:
  • Not Synced
how can we utilize this technology to really extend the learning experience?
  • Not Synced
    This happened during COVID,
  • Not Synced
and so what happened was students all over the world were basically shut in.
  • Not Synced
    They couldn't go anywhere, right?
  • Not Synced
Learning that is effective must be hands-on and immersive.
  • Not Synced
Our Nation's University has been able to strike a balance
  • Not Synced
between the good old learning that we all are used to
  • Not Synced
and the future of education that we all need.
  • Not Synced
You have easy access to learning, you are presented with fun opportunities
  • Not Synced
as you saw with the VR display,
  • Not Synced
and also you have unlimited access to information.

    In most African countries,
  • Not Synced
you'll notice that the industries are centralized
  • Not Synced
either at the capitals or in a particular region,
  • Not Synced
and then we have students traveling from other regions
  • Not Synced
over hundreds of miles to this place
  • Not Synced
    to experience industrial training.
  • Not Synced
So what we are actually doing
  • Not Synced
is that we are simulating the factories and the industries on this virtual reality technology
  • Not Synced
and rather taking it to the students.
  • Not Synced
So, the students do not have to travel to the factory,
  • Not Synced
but we are rather bringing the factory to the students.
  • Not Synced
The student puts the headset on,
  • Not Synced
and they have the feeling as though they are working in the industry
  • Not Synced
    with explanations and everything,
  • Not Synced
just as you would have had if you had visited the industry.
  • Not Synced
This has been an interesting educative and revealing episode
