Wellness Central: Exercise
-
0:00 - 0:06>> I think a good healthy amount of exercise
is once you've worked up a good sweat. -
0:06 - 0:10>> I figure 15 to 20 minutes a day.
-
0:10 - 0:15>> I think from things that I've heard enough
exercise has always been the 30 minutes -
0:15 - 0:16of cardio.
-
0:16 - 0:22>> What I do for exercise is I like
to lift weights most of the time, -
0:22 - 0:26and I know that's not enough because my cardio
is really bad, and I've been trying to alleviate -
0:26 - 0:30that with a lot more walking and running on the
treadmills, and I can't do that now obviously, -
0:31 - 0:33but as of right now, I'm going
through physical therapy, -
0:33 - 0:37which is helping me do some cardio exercises
that don't involve, you know, getting on my legs -
0:37 - 0:41and moving around because there is
a way to do cardio without having -
0:41 - 0:42to exert any pressure on your legs.
-
0:43 - 0:48>> I like going for walks or jogs
and sometimes taking friends with me. -
0:49 - 0:51I would say I probably don't
get enough exercise per week. -
0:52 - 0:54>> Usually I do walking.
-
0:54 - 1:02I'll do curls, you know, lats, and some
forearm presses, you know, things like that, -
1:03 - 1:08leg press, front and back, bench press.
-
1:08 - 1:14>> I don't exercise as often as I would like to
as a full time student, but when I do have time, -
1:14 - 1:18I found that really what works
for me is yoga in the morning. -
1:18 - 1:21It kind of helps wake you up, or
depending on the type of yoga, -
1:21 - 1:24you can do it at night to help you go to bed.
-
1:24 - 1:27The complications of work and school together,
-
1:27 - 1:30I kind of feel like I don't
have enough time to exercise. -
1:31 - 1:33So, maybe that's an excuse, but-
-
1:33 - 1:39>> I am currently enrolled in a Tai Chi class,
which is very fun and a great way to exercise -
1:39 - 1:42as well as walking around our beautiful
campus and throughout the community. -
1:44 - 1:50I believe I get a good amount of exercise,
but more would probably be better. -
1:51 - 1:53>> So one of the best ways
to fit physical activity -
1:53 - 1:59in your day is just get a physical activity
class squeezed into your schedule somewhere. -
1:59 - 2:04So I took took cross-training, and
that had sort of a wide variety. -
2:04 - 2:05It had rehab trainers.
-
2:05 - 2:07You had Stairmasters.
-
2:07 - 2:09It had weights and treadmills.
-
2:09 - 2:10We have yoga.
-
2:10 - 2:12We have Tai Chi.
-
2:12 - 2:13Tennis is also really big.
-
2:13 - 2:15We have a bunch of tennis courts on campus.
-
2:15 - 2:17>> Sitting for too long is not good for you.
-
2:18 - 2:23You want to make sure that you get up
and do some sort of walking or stretching -
2:23 - 2:27for if you're sitting longer
than 20 to 30 minutes at a time, -
2:27 - 2:32and you can even find apps online or in
the app store on your phone to help you -
2:32 - 2:34or remind you to not sit so long.
-
2:35 - 2:39There definitely is ways to
work exercise into our schedule. -
2:39 - 2:44There's a bunch of fliers from
Maureen, the nurse, on ways you can work -
2:44 - 2:48out around the campus, on how many times
you can make laps around the reservoir. -
2:48 - 2:54>> Doing 30 minutes a day of exercise
can be very beneficial for your body.
