NatureNow: Greta Thunberg and George Monbiot make short film on the climate crisis
-
0:02 - 0:04
-
0:04 - 0:07My name is Greta Thunberg.
-
0:07 - 0:10We are living in the beginning
of a mass extinction. -
0:11 - 0:14
Our climate is breaking down. -
0:14 - 0:18Children like me are giving up
their education to protest. -
0:19 - 0:21But we can still fix this.
-
0:21 - 0:23You can still fix this.
-
0:23 - 0:27To survive, we need
to stop burning fossil fuels. -
0:27 - 0:30But this alone will not be enough.
-
0:30 - 0:33Lots of solutions are talked about.
-
0:33 - 0:35But what about the solution
that is right in front of us? -
0:36 - 0:38
I’ll let my friend George explain. -
0:38 - 0:43There is a magic machine
that sucks carbon out of the air -
0:43 - 0:44costs very little
-
0:44 - 0:46and builds itself.
-
0:47 - 0:48It’s called...
-
0:48 - 0:49a tree.
-
0:49 - 0:54A tree is an example
of a natural climate solution. -
0:54 - 0:57Mangroves, peat bogs, jungles,
marshes, seabeds, -
0:57 - 0:59kelp forests, swamps, coral reefs,
-
0:59 - 1:03they take carbon out of the air
and lock it away. -
1:03 - 1:08Nature is a tool we can use
to repair our broken climate. -
1:09 - 1:12These natural climate solutions
could make a massive difference. -
1:12 - 1:14Pretty cool, right?
-
1:14 - 1:18But only if we also leave fossil fuels
in the ground. -
1:20 - 1:22Here’s the crazy part...
-
1:22 - 1:24right now we are ignoring them.
-
1:26 - 1:31We spend 1000 times more
on global fossil fuels subsidies -
1:31 - 1:33than natural based solutions.
-
1:33 - 1:35Natural climate solutions get just 2%
-
1:35 - 1:39of all the money used
on tackling climate breakdown. -
1:39 - 1:41This is your money.
-
1:41 - 1:43It is your taxes and your savings.
-
1:44 - 1:45Even more crazy
-
1:45 - 1:47right now when we need nature the most,
-
1:47 - 1:50we’re destroying it faster than ever.
-
1:50 - 1:54Up to 200 species are going extinct
every single day. -
1:54 - 1:57Much of the arctic ice is gone.
-
1:57 - 1:59Most of our wild animals have gone.
-
1:59 - 2:01Much of our soil has gone.
-
2:01 - 2:03
So what should we do? -
2:03 - 2:04What should YOU do?
-
2:04 - 2:05It’s simple...
-
2:05 - 2:06We need to
-
2:06 - 2:07PROTECT
-
2:07 - 2:09RESTORE
-
2:09 - 2:10and FUND.
-
2:10 - 2:11PROTECT
-
2:11 - 2:13Tropical forests are being cut down
-
2:13 - 2:16at the rate of
30 football pitches a minute. -
2:16 - 2:19Where Nature is doing something vital
-
2:19 - 2:21we must protect it.
-
2:21 - 2:22RESTORE
-
2:22 - 2:25Much of our planet has been damaged.
-
2:25 - 2:27But Nature can regenerate
-
2:27 - 2:30and we can help ecosystems bounce back.
-
2:31 - 2:32FUND
-
2:33 - 2:36We need to stop funding things
that destroy nature -
2:36 - 2:38and pay for things that help it.
-
2:39 - 2:41It is that simple
-
2:41 - 2:42PROTECT
-
2:42 - 2:43RESTORE
-
2:43 - 2:44FUND
-
2:45 - 2:46This can happen everywhere;
-
2:46 - 2:50Many people have already begun
using natural climate solutions. -
2:50 - 2:53We need to do it on a massive scale.
-
2:53 - 2:55
You can be part of this. -
2:55 - 2:58VOTE for people who defend nature.
-
2:58 - 3:00SHARE this video.
-
3:00 - 3:01Talk about this.
-
3:01 - 3:04All around the world
there are amazing movements -
3:04 - 3:05fighting for nature.
-
3:05 - 3:06JOIN them.
-
3:14 - 3:16Everything counts.
-
3:18 - 3:20What you do, counts.
-
3:23 - 3:25[THIS FILM WAS MADE FROM RECYCLED FOOTAGE]

3:25 - 3:27[WITH NO FLIGHTS
AND ZERO NET CARBON] -

- Title:
- NatureNow: Greta Thunberg and George Monbiot make short film on the climate crisis
- Description:
-
Environmental activists Greta Thunberg and George Monbiot have helped produce a short film highlighting the need to protect, restore and use nature to tackle the climate crisis.
Living ecosystems like forests, mangroves, swamps and seabeds can pull enormous quantities of carbon from the air and store them safely, but natural climate solutions currently receive only 2% of the funding spent on cutting emissions.
The film’s director, Tom Mustill of Gripping Films, said: 'We tried to make the film have the tiniest environmental impact possible. We took trains to Sweden to interview Greta, charged our hybrid car at George’s house, used green energy to power the edit and recycled archive footage rather than shooting new.'
