NatureNow: Greta Thunberg and George Monbiot make short film on the climate crisis

  • 0:02 - 0:04
    This is not a drill.
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    My name is Greta Thunberg.
  • 0:07 - 0:10
We are living in the beginning
    of a mass extinction.
  • 0:11 - 0:14

    Our climate is breaking down.
  • 0:14 - 0:18
Children like me are giving up
    their education to protest.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
But we can still fix this.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    You can still fix this.
  • 0:23 - 0:27
    To survive, we need
    to stop burning fossil fuels
  • 0:27 - 0:30
But this alone will not be enough.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
Lots of solutions are talked about.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    But what about the solution
that is right in front of us?
  • 0:36 - 0:38

I’ll let my friend George explain.
  • 0:38 - 0:43
    There is a magic machine
that sucks carbon out of the air
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    costs very little
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    and builds itself.
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    It’s called...
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    a tree.
  • 0:49 - 0:54
    A tree is an example
    of a natural climate solution.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    Mangroves, peatbogs, jungles,
    marshes, seabeds
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    kelp forests, swamps, coral reefs
  • 0:59 - 1:03
they take carbon out of the air
    and lock it away.
  • 1:03 - 1:08
Nature is a tool we can use
    to repair our broken climate.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    These natural climate solutions
    could make a massive difference.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    Pretty cool, right?
  • 1:14 - 1:18
But only if we also leave fossil fuels
    in the ground.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    Here’s the crazy part...
  • 1:22 - 1:24
right now we are ignoring them.
  • 1:26 - 1:31
    We spend 1000 times more
    on global fossil fuels subsidies
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    than natural based solutions.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
Natural climate solutions get just 2%
  • 1:35 - 1:39
    of all the money used
    on tackling climate breakdown.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    This is your money.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
It is your taxes and your savings.
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    Even more crazy
  • 1:45 - 1:47
right now when we need nature the most,
  • 1:47 - 1:50
we’re destroying it faster than ever.
  • 1:50 - 1:54
Up to 200 species are going extinct
    every single day.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
Much of the arctic ice is gone.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
Most of our wild animals have gone.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
Much of our soil has gone.
  • 2:01 - 2:03

    So what should we do?
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    What should YOU do?
  • 2:04 - 2:05
    It’s simple...
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    We need to
  • 2:06 - 2:07
    PROTECT
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    RESTORE
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    and FUND.
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    Protect.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
Tropical forests are being cut down
  • 2:13 - 2:16
at the rate of 30 football pitches a minute.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
Where Nature is doing something vital
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    we must protect it.
  • 2:21 - 2:22
    Restore.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
Much of our planet has been damaged.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    But Nature can regenerate
  • 2:27 - 2:30
and we can help ecosystems bounce back.
  • 2:31 - 2:32

    Fund.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
We need to stop funding things that destroy Nature
  • 2:36 - 2:38
and pay for things that help it.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    It is that simple
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    Protect
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    Restore
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    Fund.
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    This can happen everywhere;
  • 2:46 - 2:50
    Many people have already begun
    using natural climate solutions.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
We need to do it on a massive scale.
  • 2:53 - 2:55

You can be part of this.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
VOTE for people who defend nature.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    Talk about this.
  • 3:01 - 3:04
All around the world there are amazing movements
  • 3:04 - 3:05
    fighting for Nature.
  • 3:05 - 3:06
    JOIN them.
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    Everything counts.
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    What you do, counts.
