Nature vs Nurture | Genetics | Biology | FuseSchool

  • 0:00 - 0:12
(MUSIC). Have you noticed that you're different to your relations, parents, or carers,
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    your next door neighbor,
  • 0:14 - 0:16
the kid who lives across the street,
  • 0:16 - 0:17
and everyone else on the planet?
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    In fact, you're unique.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
But do you really know why you are different?
  • 0:24 - 0:26
Why are we all different to each other?
  • 0:27 - 0:31
Why does any organism have different characteristics to another organism?
  • 0:32 - 0:37
The answer lies in a long-running debate called nature versus nurture,
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    or genetics versus environment,
  • 0:41 - 0:42
which is a little less catchy.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    Nature refers to our genetics.
  • 0:46 - 0:50
The unique combination of genes that we have naturally
  • 0:50 - 0:53
inherited from our biological parents from their DNA.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
Many characteristics are controlled by our genes,
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    including our blood group,
  • 0:59 - 1:02
eye color, or natural hair color.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
Some diseases are also caused by our genes.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    For example, cystic fibrosis.
  • 1:09 - 1:13
The color of a flower or a fruit is controlled by genes in plants.
  • 1:14 - 1:19
Nurture refers to the effect of the environment on characteristics.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    The word literally means care.
  • 1:23 - 1:27
Examples of characteristics that are determined by the environment
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    are weight or mass,
  • 1:29 - 1:31
which is dependent on your diet
  • 1:31 - 1:32
or the presence of a scar.
  • 1:33 - 1:39
Some diseases may be caused by environmental influences such as type 2 diabetes
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    or coronary heart disease.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
Imagine a plant has not received enough sunlight or water,
  • 1:46 - 1:49
this may influence the height of the plant
  • 1:49 - 1:51
or the number of fruits produced.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
We would say that the environment has influenced these characteristics too
  • 1:57 - 2:00
or that a plant has been affected by nurture.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
Can you decide if each of these
  • 2:03 - 2:06
characteristics is controlled by inherited characteristics,
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    the environment, or both?
  • 2:09 - 2:11
Where would each go on a Venn diagram?
  • 2:12 - 2:13
Pause the video while you think.
  • 2:17 - 2:18
Did you get them all right?
  • 2:20 - 2:23
The effect of genetics and the environment on
  • 2:23 - 2:27
characteristics has been researched using identical twins.
  • 2:28 - 2:29
Can you think why this is?
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    Identical twins have identical DNA,
  • 2:35 - 2:38
so in theory, should have identical characteristics.
  • 2:39 - 2:43
It follows that any differences between a pair of identical twins
  • 2:43 - 2:48
could be due to the influence of the environment on their characteristics.
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    In fact,
  • 2:50 - 2:52
twins often grow up to have very different
  • 2:52 - 2:56
personalities and preferences beyond their physical similarities.
  • 2:58 - 3:01
These studies showed that many characteristics are
  • 3:01 - 3:05
influenced by both genetics and the environment.
  • 3:07 - 3:12
Some studies actually used twins identical genomes as a control
  • 3:12 - 3:14
to prove the effect of the environment on the body.
  • 3:16 - 3:17
    For example,
  • 3:17 - 3:20
one study showed how skin aged differently
  • 3:20 - 3:24
by comparing smoker twins with non-smoker twins.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
Remember that the characteristics of a living organism
  • 3:28 - 3:33
are influenced by its genetics and its interaction with the environment,
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    so both nature
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    and nurture are responsible.
