What Is Sexual Assault?
-
0:00 - 0:02[ Bell Rings ]
-
0:02 - 0:04>> Hey, Barb, what's up?
-
0:04 - 0:06I've never seen you this sad on nugget day.
-
0:06 - 0:09>> I don't care about stupid
nuggets or stupid dipping sauces. -
0:09 - 0:11>> But there's three flavors.
-
0:11 - 0:13Three flavors.
-
0:13 - 0:18>> It's just, Mr. Squall asked me to stay
after school for the third time this week. -
0:18 - 0:21And sometimes he gets a little too close.
-
0:21 - 0:22>> Squirrely Squall?
-
0:23 - 0:24That guy's a total perv.
-
0:24 - 0:27>> Wait. Are you saying that Mr. Squall --
-
0:27 - 0:31I mean, are you worried he
might sexually assault you? -
0:31 - 0:32>> Sarah! Shh!
-
0:32 - 0:33>> Uh, can we talk about dipping sauces?
-
0:33 - 0:36>> I know it's uncomfortable
to talk about this stuff. -
0:36 - 0:37But it's really important.
-
0:38 - 0:39My sister's a social worker.
-
0:40 - 0:42And she told me all about sexual assault.
-
0:42 - 0:47Basically, sexual assault is when someone
does something sexual to another person, -
0:47 - 0:48without getting their permission first.
-
0:49 - 0:53That can include anything from touching
someone's genitals, breasts, or butt. -
0:54 - 0:58Inserting something into any of their body
parts or showing them something sexual, -
0:58 - 1:00when they haven't given their explicit consent.
-
1:00 - 1:02>> Explicit consent?
-
1:02 - 1:06>> Explicit consent is a clear,
voluntary agreement to do something. -
1:06 - 1:08In this case, something sexual.
-
1:08 - 1:11A shrug or silence, doesn't count.
-
1:11 - 1:16And you can't give consent if you're feeling
threatened or if you're drunk or high. -
1:17 - 1:20If you consent to one thing, it
doesn't mean you consent to everything. -
1:20 - 1:23And you can take it back at
any time you change your mind. -
1:23 - 1:26>> Okay. But what do I do about Mr. Squall?
-
1:27 - 1:31>> If he assaults you in any way, first
remember that it's not your fault. -
1:32 - 1:35No matter who you are with, how you
were dressed or what you were doing, -
1:36 - 1:39you have nothing to feel guilty about, period.
-
1:39 - 1:44If anyone ever rapes you or hurts you
in any way, get to a hospital fast. -
1:45 - 1:46Tell them what happened.
-
1:46 - 1:49And they can help you take the steps
to prevent illness or pregnancy. -
1:49 - 1:51And get you to the additional
support you'll need. -
1:52 - 1:56Most importantly, you should tell someone you
trust like your mom or a school counselor. -
1:57 - 2:02You can tell them face to face, over text, on
the phone, or however you're most comfortable. -
2:02 - 2:04Talking to us was a good start.
-
2:04 - 2:06>> Oh, I'm freaking out!
-
2:06 - 2:07>> Me, too!
-
2:07 - 2:13>> It's normal to feel weird or scared about
speaking up, especially if you know the abuser. -
2:13 - 2:18But it's brave to talk about sexual
assault or any unwanted sexual behavior -
2:18 - 2:20that makes you feel uncomfortable.
-
2:20 - 2:23You'll be protecting yourself
and other people, too. -
2:23 - 2:24>> Thanks, Sara.
-
2:24 - 2:27I think I better go talk to the counselor.
-
2:28 - 2:30>> We're here for you, Barb, no matter what.
-
2:30 - 2:32Here, take one of my dipping sauces.
-
2:32 - 2:33Just not the Szechuan.
-
