Informative Speech - Acupuncture
-
0:07 - 0:10Six months ago, my seventy-eight
year old grandmother was quickly losing -
0:10 - 0:11her independence.
-
0:11 - 0:14Severe arthritis in both knees
hampered her ability to take care of -
0:14 - 0:15herself.
-
0:15 - 0:18Shopping, getting around the
neighborhood, even walking down her -
0:18 - 0:20front steps was becoming almost
impossible. -
0:21 - 0:24Pain medications helped
somewhat, but the side-effects created -
0:24 - 0:25their own problems.
-
0:26 - 0:28Then her doctor suggested acupuncture.
-
0:28 - 0:31My grandmother was skeptical at
first but she was willing to try just -
0:31 - 0:33about anything.
-
0:33 - 0:35She did and the results were miraculous.
-
0:36 - 0:39After six weeks, her pain and
stiffness were significantly reduced. -
0:40 - 0:42She was able to take care of her
apartment again. -
0:42 - 0:45She could get on her own to go
shopping, to visit friends and family, -
0:45 - 0:48and to do the other things that her
arthritis had prevented in the past. -
0:49 - 0:52Acupuncture restored her quality of
life and her independence. -
0:53 - 0:56My grandmother's story is not unique.
-
0:56 - 0:59Performed for well over two
thousand years in China and other -
0:59 - 1:03parts of Asia, acupuncture is
becoming more and more popular in -
1:03 - 1:07the U.S. and other western
countries for one simple reason: it works. -
1:08 - 1:12Impressed by my grandmother's
experience, I began acupuncture -
1:12 - 1:15treatments for my migraine
headaches and now my headaches -
1:15 - 1:16are completely gone.
-
1:17 - 1:20Not surprisingly, I wanted to learn
more about this treatment that -
1:20 - 1:23produced such miraculous results
for both my grandmother and myself. -
1:24 - 1:27Today I will share part of what I
have learned by explaining what -
1:27 - 1:30happens when you receive an
acupuncture treatment, how -
1:30 - 1:33acupuncture works, the kinds of
medical conditions that can be -
1:33 - 1:37treated by acupuncture, and the
growing use of acupuncture in -
1:37 - 1:39combination with western medical
techniques. -
1:41 - 1:44Let's start by looking at a typical
acupuncture treatment. -
1:44 - 1:48Acupuncture is the insertion of
needles into the skin to achieve a -
1:48 - 1:52balanced flow of energy which in
turn restores and preserves health. -
1:53 - 1:55To prevent a chance of
contamination from one person to -
1:55 - 1:59another, acupuncturists in the U.S.
use sterilized needles that are -
1:59 - 2:03individually packaged and are
disposed of after a single use. -
2:03 - 2:07I realize that the notion of having
needles stuck into you may seem -
2:07 - 2:11frightening, but the needles are so
thin that the process is painless. -
2:12 - 2:14Acupuncture needles are much
smaller than the needles used for -
2:14 - 2:16drawing blood or getting shots.
-
2:17 - 2:20Here are some needles that I received
from my acupuncturist. -
2:21 - 2:23After my speech I'll pass them
around so that you can see how -
2:23 - 2:25incredibly light and small they are.
-
2:28 - 2:32They're so thin, about the thickness
of a human hair, that you can hardly -
2:32 - 2:35tell when they're inserted and
there's usually no sensation other -
2:35 - 2:38than pain relief once they have
been inserted. -
2:38 - 2:42After being left in for twenty or thirty
minutes while you lie in a darkened -
2:42 - 2:45room, the needles are removed
and the treatment is over. -
2:48 - 2:50Now that you know what happens
when you're treated by an -
2:50 - 2:54acupuncturist, you're probably
wondering how acupuncture works. -
2:55 - 2:59The process is explained by Dr.
Felix Mann, president of the Medical -
2:59 - 3:04Acupuncturist Society in his book
Acupuncture: The Ancient Chinese Art -
3:04 - 3:08of Healing and How it Works
Scientifically, "According to traditional -
3:08 - 3:13Chinese medicine, every life
process is based on the flow of vital -
3:13 - 3:14energy through the body.
-
3:15 - 3:19This energy is known in Chinese as
xi and flows along channels or -
3:19 - 3:21pathways called meridians."
-
3:22 - 3:24These meridians are shown in this
visual aid. -
3:26 - 3:30As you can see, they cover the
entire body, running from the top of -
3:30 - 3:34the head to the bottom of the feet
and down both arms. -
3:36 - 3:40When the freeflow of energy
through these meridians is blocked, -
3:40 - 3:43the result is pain, illness, disease or
other physical problems. -
3:44 - 3:48The aim of acupuncture is to
restore the open flow of energy -
3:48 - 3:49through these meridians.
-
3:49 - 3:53This is done by placing needles at
specific points on the meridians. -
3:54 - 3:57Altogether, there are more than one
thousand acupuncture points on the -
3:57 - 3:59meridians.
-
3:59 - 4:02These points have been mapped
out over the centuries with scientific -
4:02 - 4:03precision.
-
4:04 - 4:09In China, there is a saying, "There
is no pain if there is freeflow. If -
4:09 - 4:12there is pain, there is no freeflow."
-
4:16 - 4:20Although acupuncture is based on
different view of the body from that -
4:20 - 4:24held by western doctors, the
evidence is clear that it works in -
4:24 - 4:26treating a wide range of medical
conditions. -
4:27 - 4:30The World Health Organization lists
more than forty conditions that can -
4:30 - 4:34be effectively treated with
acupuncture, including ear, nose and -
4:34 - 4:37throat ailments, asthma and other
respiratory problems and nervous -
4:37 - 4:39system and muscular disorders.
-
4:41 - 4:45A study in the Annals of Internal
Medicine confirms that acupuncture -
4:45 - 4:49can relieve low back pain while the
American Cancer Society reports that -
4:49 - 4:52acupuncture may even help smokers
kick the habit. -
4:53 - 4:56People also use acupuncture to
build immune system, to control -
4:56 - 4:59allergies and to combat depression
and anxiety. -
5:00 - 5:03Of course you can't use
acupuncture to heal a broken arm, -
5:03 - 5:07but people in Asia often use
acupuncture during surgery instead -
5:07 - 5:12of western anesthesia and it can
speed recovery time after surgery. -
5:12 - 5:16In light of all of this, it is not
surprising that a number of clinics -
5:16 - 5:20and hospitals are combining
acupuncture with western medicine -
5:20 - 5:23in an effort to provide the patients
the benefits of both. -
5:23 - 5:29For example, Massachusetts
General Hospital in Boston, the third -
5:29 - 5:32oldest hospital in the U.S., has
added acupuncture to its wellness center. -
5:32 - 5:36Positive results have also been
seen at the Mattel Children's Hospital -
5:36 - 5:37at UCLA.
-
5:38 - 5:42Dr. Lani Zeltzer, director of the
hospital's pediatric pain program -
5:42 - 5:44confirms that acupuncture really
does help. -
5:45 - 5:49Most children accept acupuncture
and in fact really feel good about it. -
5:50 - 5:53Another example of the integration
of acupuncture with western -
5:53 - 5:57medicine is at the Wasser Pain
Management Center at Mt. Sinai -
5:57 - 5:59Hospital in Toronto, Canada.
-
6:00 - 6:03Neurologist Alan Gordon, director
of the center, says that "introducing -
6:03 - 6:08acupuncture into the hospital
expands the treatment available to -
6:08 - 6:12chronic pain sufferers and provides
multiple options of care to our patients." -
6:13 - 6:16The National Institutes for Health
report that more than eight million -
6:16 - 6:20Americans have tried acupuncture
and its use throughout the rest of the -
6:20 - 6:22western world is growing fast.
-
6:23 - 6:26Today we have learned what
happens during an acupuncture -
6:26 - 6:30treatment, how acupuncture works,
some of the illnesses that can be -
6:30 - 6:34treated with acupuncture, and the
growing integration of acupuncture -
6:34 - 6:36with western approaches to medicine.
-
6:37 - 6:40I hope that you now know more
about this ancient medical practice -
6:40 - 6:42and the benefits that it can provide.
-
6:43 - 6:47After years of skepticism about
acupuncture, the west is finally -
6:47 - 6:51beginning to recognize that
acupuncture is a highly effective way -
6:51 - 6:54to improve health and reduce pain
and suffering. -
6:54 - 6:56Just ask my grandmother.
-
6:57 - 6:59[Applause]
