    situation. You put on a horror film, you

    turn down the lights, turn up the volume,

    and sit back. You’re watching as monsters

    come creeping out of the dark in search
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    of prey. Your heart goes out to the four
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    characters in the film and you start
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    squirming in your seat as the monsters
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    get closer.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    Your pulse accelerates, your palms get
  • 0:48 - 0:53
    sweaty and your hair stands on end. This
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    is when you begin to throw nervous
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    glances into the corners of the room.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    What was that sound? Surely it didn't
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    come from the television. Was that
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    movement in the shadows? The horror that's
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    on the screen bleeds into your system
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    and into the surroundings. The world
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    around you turns threatening and scary.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    You cover your eyes but it doesn't help.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    Pretty soon you'll have to switch off
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    but even though you shut off the film,
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    your heart keeps hammering and you'll
  • 1:24 - 1:28
    probably have nightmares tonight. Still
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    maybe you ought to put the film back on.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    You're kind of curious after all. That's
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    my Saturday night in a nutshell. Anybody
  • 1:36 - 1:40
    else ever been in that situation? Of all
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    the strange things that humans do
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    watching horror films has got to be one
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    of the strangest. It's also a really
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    interesting behavior scientifically
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    speaking. As a horror researcher
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    I've thought about it a lot. Why do we do
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    it? Why do we watch horror films and
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    read horror novels and play horror
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    video games and why are there so many
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    spooky creatures in our worlds of
  • 2:02 - 2:06
    make-believe? And what is horror? Horror is
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    a kind of entertainment that's designed to
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    spook people. To make them scream and
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    shiver with fear and break out in a cold
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    sweat.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    Think Stephen King and Paranormal
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    Activity and The Exorcist.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    It's a consistently popular and
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    profitable genre. Stephen King has sold
  • 2:23 - 2:28
    more than 350 million books worldwide. In
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    the last 20 years in the United States,
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    horror films grossed close to 8 billion
  • 2:32 - 2:36
    dollars. It's weird it's weird because
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    horror is by definition designed to make
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    its audience feel bad. A good horror film
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    inspires negative emotion. It makes us
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    feel disgust and dread and terror and
  • 2:46 - 2:50
    anxiety and fear. Let me ask you how many
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    of you seek out horror films from time to
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    time? Show of hands. Please raise your
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    hand if you sometimes seek out horror. Okay
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    that's about half, that matches my own
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    research along with some colleagues. I'm
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    looking into the personality profile of
  • 3:04 - 3:07
    horror fans and we're finding that more than
  • 3:07 - 3:10
    half for about 54% answer in the
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    affirmative in response to the statement:
  • 3:12 - 3:16
    I tend to enjoy horror media. Only 29%
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    say they don't agree with this statement
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    and the remaining 17% can't make up
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    their mind. You know they're probably the
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    ones who would die first in a horror
  • 3:25 - 3:29
    film. Next would be the ones who say
  • 3:29 - 3:35
    they don't like horror. Anyway people really
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    do tend to like the kind of
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    entertainment that's designed to make
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    them feel bad. Why is that the case and
  • 3:39 - 3:42
    how does horror even work? Those are the
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    kinds of questions I've been researching
  • 3:44 - 3:48
    and here is what I have found out. Horror,
  • 3:48 - 3:49
    in whatever medium, from films and
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    literature to video games and virtual
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    reality, works by exploiting an ancient
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    and evolved set of biological defense
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    mechanisms. Let's call it the evolved
  • 4:00 - 4:03
    fear system. If we want to understand how
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    that system works and why it became part
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    of human nature we have to look at the
  • 4:07 - 4:10
    evolutionary history of our species.
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    Now, our evolutionary ancestors found
  • 4:13 - 4:14
    themselves in a world that was full of
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    danger. There was the threat from
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    predators and creepy crawlies and
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    invisible microorganisms or disease and
  • 4:21 - 4:24
    the threat from other humans. In response
  • 4:24 - 4:27
    to those dangers our ancestors gradually
  • 4:27 - 4:28
    evolved a
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    fear system that would keep them alert
  • 4:30 - 4:34
    and alive. In other words our species
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    evolved to be hyper vigilant and highly
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    fearful because being hyper vigilant and
  • 4:38 - 4:41
    highly fearful kept our ancestors alive
  • 4:41 - 4:44
    in a dangerous world. The world may now
  • 4:44 - 4:46
    be less dangerous than it was in
  • 4:46 - 4:47
    ancestral times at least in terms of
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    predation. We're not in any immediate
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    danger of being attacked by a
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    saber-tooth cat on our way home from
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    work, but we are no less vigilant and no
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    less fearful
  • 4:57 - 5:00
    than our evolutionary ancestors and
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    horror entertainment takes advantage of
  • 5:02 - 5:07
    that aspect of human nature. So horror
  • 5:07 - 5:09
    entertainment works by transporting us
  • 5:09 - 5:12
    imaginatively into virtual worlds that
  • 5:12 - 5:15
    are full of danger. In horror films and
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    literature we follow and mirror
  • 5:17 - 5:20
    protagonists as they confront terrifying
  • 5:20 - 5:23
    threats. Take Stephen King's The Shining
  • 5:23 - 5:25
    for example. Here we follow a family who
  • 5:25 - 5:29
    has snowed in at a haunted hotel. In the
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    novel's most famous scene the young boy
  • 5:31 - 5:35
    Danny goes into room 217.
  • 5:35 - 5:37
    He walks nervously around the room and
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    into the bathroom where a hotel guest
  • 5:39 - 5:43
    killed herself some years before. The
  • 5:43 - 5:44
    hotel is now supposed to be empty of
  • 5:44 - 5:47
    guests but to Danny surprise there is
  • 5:47 - 5:50
    somebody in the bathtub or something. To
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    Danny's horror it's a corpse.
  • 5:53 - 5:56
    It's the corpse of the woman who killed
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    herself. She's lying there bloated and
  • 5:58 - 6:02
    purple and with glassy white eyes. She's
  • 6:02 - 6:04
    rotting like meat festering in the trash.
  • 6:04 - 6:09
    And then she starts to get up. King provides
  • 6:09 - 6:12
    a detailed and really vivid description
  • 6:12 - 6:13
    of this moving corpse and as readers we
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    are forced to hold that image in our
  • 6:15 - 6:18
    minds. That's bad enough but we're also
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    given a detailed description of Danny's
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    response to the situation. We learned
  • 6:22 - 6:24
    that he tries to scream and wets himself.
  • 6:24 - 6:28
    We are made to mirror his fear and
  • 6:28 - 6:30
    revulsion and that strengthens our own
  • 6:30 - 6:33
    responses to the horrible image. Our fear
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    and revulsion become mixed with
  • 6:35 - 6:37
    sympathetic anxiety for a character in
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    danger.
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    It's a strong emotional cocktail.
  • 6:41 - 6:45
    Interactive and live-action media turn
  • 6:45 - 6:48
    the screw on horror entertainment .Or
  • 6:48 - 6:51
    video games for example make you feel as
  • 6:51 - 6:52
    if you're the protagonist in a digital
  • 6:52 - 6:56
    if you're the protagonist in a digital
  • 6:56 - 6:59
    attraction visitors walk through scary
  • 6:59 - 7:02
    sets populated by scare actors. Here's a
  • 7:02 - 7:04
    picture from dystopia haunted house
  • 7:04 - 7:07
    Denmark's scariest haunt. What you see is
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    a couple of visitors were confronted by
  • 7:09 - 7:12
    a big guy with a machete.
  • 7:12 - 7:14
    He's called the chef and you can take a
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    guess at what's on the menu here. Around
  • 7:16 - 7:21
    5,000 people pay for this every
  • 7:21 - 7:24
    Halloween and around 300 visitors never
  • 7:24 - 7:27
    make it all the way through the haunt.
  • 7:27 - 7:28
    They have to abort their visit because
  • 7:28 - 7:30
    it's too scary.
  • 7:30 - 7:31
    They have fainted from fear and they
  • 7:31 - 7:34
    have wet themselves in terror. Why do
  • 7:34 - 7:37
    they do it? Why do people pay good money
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    to experience true fear and genuine
  • 7:39 - 7:42
    terror like the people in this picture?
  • 7:42 - 7:45
    They do it because they have an evolved
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    appetite for vicarious experience with
  • 7:47 - 7:51
    threat scenarios and those scenarios or
  • 7:51 - 7:54
    horror entertainment work because they are
  • 7:54 - 7:57
    structured to target the evolved fear
  • 7:57 -
    system. Just consider the monsters that
  • Not Synced
    populate our horror entertainment from
  • Not Synced
    scary folk tales to haunted attractions.
  • Not Synced
    Such monsters are universal in the human
  • Not Synced
    imagination and the most horrifying ones
  • Not Synced
    reflect ancestral threats. Just think of
  • Not Synced
    the enormous white shark from Jaws you
  • Not Synced
    Know. Duh duh duh duh duh duh
  • Not Synced
    the threat depicted here is the threat
  • Not Synced
    from an enormous man-eating predator.
  • Not Synced
    That kind of threat really captures our
  • Not Synced
    attention and sparks our imagination by
  • Not Synced
    engaging the evolved fear system. Now the
  • Not Synced
    film itself is pretty unrealistic but
  • Not Synced
    that doesn't matter.
  • Not Synced
    Horror monsters don't have to be
  • Not Synced
    realistic to frighten us they have to
  • Not Synced
    engage the evolved fear system. They have
  • Not Synced
    to have qualities that match or over
  • Not Synced
    match those of ancestral dangers and the
  • Not Synced
    white shark in Jaws has that in spades.
  • Not Synced
    It's like an ancestral predator on
  • Not Synced
    speed. Faster bigger stronger and much
  • Not Synced
    more dangerous. Media psychologists have
  • Not Synced
    documented how thousands of people were
  • Not Synced
    traumatized by jaws. Many viewers even
  • Not Synced
    became afraid of swimming in pools and
  • Not Synced
    freshwater lakes after watching the film.
  • Not Synced
    Consider another well-known and highly
  • Not Synced
    unrealistic monster. The zombie now
  • Not Synced
    zombies don't exist in the real world
  • Not Synced
    and we have no archaeological evidence
  • Not Synced
    to suggest that they ever did but every
  • Not Synced
    well-raised child is able to mimic the
  • Not Synced
    behavior of a zombie. You know they're
  • Not Synced
    groaning the outstretch the limp arms
  • Not Synced
    and the classic stumbling walk. The
  • Not Synced
    monster has really infected our popular
  • Not Synced
    culture in a big way. A zombie is a
  • Not Synced
    effectively targets the evolved fear
  • Not Synced
    system in fact the zombie targets the
  • Not Synced
    fear system from two angles
  • Not Synced
    because it combines the threat of
  • Not Synced
    predation with the threat of contagion. A
  • Not Synced
    zombie is a predator it wants to eat you,
  • Not Synced
    it is also contagious it will infect you
  • Not Synced
    with its disease. It is visibly
  • Not Synced
    decomposing creeping with rotten
  • Not Synced
    pathogens. I mean look at the poor
  • Not Synced
    creature.
  • Not Synced

    You can tell that these horror monsters
  • Not Synced
    engage the evolved fear system from the
  • Not Synced
    behavioral and physiological effects of
  • Not Synced
    the good horror film. You know the goose
  • Not Synced
    bumps and the hammering heart and the
  • Not Synced
    screams. These are all evolved defensive
  • Not Synced
    reactions goosebumps are a relic from a
  • Not Synced
    distant past when we were covered in fur
  • Not Synced
    and goose bumps or piloerection would
  • Not Synced
    make our first stand on end and so make
  • Not Synced
    us look bigger to scare off an attacker.
  • Not Synced
    Cats do the same thing by the way. Our
  • Not Synced
    hearts beat faster to pump blood to the
  • Not Synced
    big muscle groups so that we're ready
  • Not Synced
    for fight or flight and screams send a
  • Not Synced
    signal to other people a signal for them
  • Not Synced
    to help or get the hell away. Horror taps
  • Not Synced
    into the evolved fear system but that's
  • Not Synced
    not all. Horror can help us calibrate that
  • Not Synced
    system. It's like when you take your car
  • Not Synced
    to the mechanic for a check-up the
  • Not Synced
    mechanic carefully goes through all the
  • Not Synced
    vital parts of the car and he or she
  • Not Synced
    will make sure that the airbags and the
  • Not Synced
    anti-lock braking system work. Hopefully
  • Not Synced
    you'll never need them because you don't
  • Not Synced
    want to get into a situation that
  • Not Synced
    requires an airbag to deploy but you
  • Not Synced
    certainly want them to work. Same with
  • Not Synced
    the fear system. Through exposure to
  • Not Synced
    horror you give it a test run make sure
  • Not Synced
    it works properly and keep it nicely
  • Not Synced
    tuned. Horror lets us learn what it feels
  • Not Synced
    like to be truly afraid and it lets us
  • Not Synced
    learn how to handle negative emotions. It
  • Not Synced
    lets us maintain and refine coping
  • Not Synced
    skills that we may apply in critical
  • Not Synced
    situations in our own lives. There isn't
  • Not Synced
    yet much experimental research into this
  • Not Synced
    but we do have some support from
  • Not Synced
    psychological science. One study suggests
  • Not Synced
    that hardcore horror fans require more
  • Not Synced
    extreme stimulation than to less avid
  • Not Synced
    fans which means that the hardcore fans
  • Not Synced
    build up some resistance to fear
  • Not Synced
    provoking stimuli with exposure. Other
  • Not Synced
    research suggests that by exposing
  • Not Synced
    ourselves to horror we build a sense of
  • Not Synced
    mastery which may be transferred to our
  • Not Synced
    own lives. In this way horror can help us
  • Not Synced
    find and even expand our limits for how
  • Not Synced
    much negative stimulation we can handle.
  • Not Synced
    you know I'm not sure I'd be standing
  • Not Synced
    here today if I hadn't for
  • Not Synced
    myself to watch all those horror films
  • Not Synced
    in the name of science. Sure my heart is
  • Not Synced
    hammering and my palms are a little
  • Not Synced
    sweaty but you guys are a lot less scary
  • Not Synced
    than Pennywise the dancing clown.
  • Not Synced
    So horror can help us calibrate the fear
  • Not Synced
    system and horror can help us refine our
  • Not Synced
    coping skills. That's why so many of us
  • Not Synced
    are drawn to the genre even if we don't
  • Not Synced
    like to watch horror films alone. The
  • Not Synced
    next time you are terrified of a novel, a
  • Not Synced
    film a video game, or in a haunt, just
  • Not Synced
    remember that you are in fact tapping
  • Not Synced
    into and calibrating an ancient
  • Not Synced
    biological defense system. Never mind the
  • Not Synced
    fear and the screams and the nightmares.
