How we're using drones to deliver blood and save lives

    or advanced technology

    can never start in Africa.
  • Not Synced
    Instead, they think that the best way
    to help the continent advance
  • Not Synced
    is by providing aid or services
  • Not Synced
    that the continent
    can't provide for itself.
  • Not Synced
    So while we see advanced technology
  • Not Synced
    like robotics and aritificial intelligence
    growing exponentially
  • Not Synced
    in the developed world,
  • Not Synced
    those same people are worried
  • Not Synced
    that a technologically backward Africa
    is falling behind.
  • Not Synced
    That attitude couldn't be more wrong.
  • Not Synced
    I'm a robotics entrepreneur
    who's spent a lot of time here in Africa.
  • Not Synced
    In 2014, we created zipline,
  • Not Synced
    which is a company that uses
    electric, autonomous aircraft
  • Not Synced
    to deliver medicine to hospitals
    and health centers on demand.
  • Not Synced
    And last year,
  • Not Synced
    we launched the world's first
    automated delievery system
  • Not Synced
    operating at national scale.
  • Not Synced
    And guess what?
  • Not Synced
    We did not do that in the US,
  • Not Synced
    we didn't do it in Japan,
  • Not Synced
    we didn't do it in Europe.
  • Not Synced
    It was actually President Paul Kugame
  • Not Synced
    and the Rwandan Minsitry of Hleaht
  • Not Synced
    that made a big bet on the potential
    of this technology,
  • Not Synced
    and signed a commerical contract
  • Not Synced
    to deliver a majority
    of the country's blood on demand.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Yeah, they deserve the applause.
  • Not Synced
    So why is blood important?
  • Not Synced
    Rwana collects between 60 and 80,000
    units of blood a year.
  • Not Synced
    So this is a product
    that when you need it,
  • Not Synced
    you really, really need it.
  • Not Synced
    But blood is also challenging because
    it has a very short shelf life,
  • Not Synced
    there are lots of different
    storage requirements,
  • Not Synced
    and it's really hard to predict the demand
    for all of these different blood groups
  • Not Synced
    before a patient actually needs something.
  • Not Synced
    But the cool thing is
    that using this technology,
  • Not Synced
    Rwanda has been able to keep
    more blood centralized,
  • Not Synced
    and then provide it when
    a patient needs something
  • Not Synced
    to any hospital or health center
    in an average of just 20 or 30 minutes.
  • Not Synced
    So do you guys want to see how it works?
  • Not Synced
    (Audience) Yes.
  • Not Synced
    All right, nobody believes me,
  • Not Synced
    so better to show.
  • Not Synced
    This is our distribution center
  • Not Synced
    which is about 20 kilometers
    outside of Kigali.
  • Not Synced
    This actually used to be a cornfield
    nine months ago,
  • Not Synced
    and with the Rwandan government,
  • Not Synced
    we built this center in a couple weeks.
  • Not Synced
    So when a patient is having an emergency,
  • Not Synced
    a doctor or nurse at that hospital
    can send us a Whatsapp
  • Not Synced
    telling us what they need.
  • Not Synced
    And then our team will immediately
    spring into action.
  • Not Synced
    We pull the blood from our stock
  • Not Synced
    which is delievered from the National
    Center for Blood Transfusion,
  • Not Synced
    we scan the blood into our system,
  • Not Synced
    so the Ministry of Health knows
    where the blood is going.
  • Not Synced
    And then we'll basically
    pack it into a Zip,
  • Not Synced
    which is what we call these little
    autonomous airplanes
  • Not Synced
    that run on batteries.
  • Not Synced
    And then once that Zip is ready to go,
  • Not Synced
    we accelerate it from zero to 100
    kilometers an hour
  • Not Synced
    in about half of a second.
  • Not Synced
    And from the moment it leaves
    the end of the launcher,
  • Not Synced
    it's completely autonomous.
  • Not Synced
    This is out air traffic controller
    calling it in
  • Not Synced
    to Kigali International Airport.
  • Not Synced
    And when the Zip arrives at the hospital,
  • Not Synced
    it descends to about 30 feet,
  • Not Synced
    and drops the package.
  • Not Synced
    We use a really simple paper parachute --
  • Not Synced
    simple things are best --
  • Not Synced
    that allows the package to come
    to the ground gently and reliably
  • Not Synced
    in the same place every time.
  • Not Synced
    It's just like ride sharing;
  • Not Synced
    the doctors get a text message
    one minute before we arrive saying,
  • Not Synced
    "Walk outside and receive your delivery."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    And then the doctors have
    what they need to save a person's life.
  • Not Synced
    So this is actually watching
    a delivery happen
  • Not Synced
    from our distribution center,
  • Not Synced
    and this vehicle is about
    50 kilometers away.
  • Not Synced
    We're able to watch the vehicle
    as it makes a delivery at a hospital
  • Not Synced
    in real time.
  • Not Synced
    And you may have noticed there are pings
  • Not Synced
    that are coming off of
    that vehicle on the screen.
  • Not Synced
    Those pings are actually data packets
  • Not Synced
    that we're getting
    over the cell phone networks,
  • Not Synced
    so these planes have SIM cards
    just like your cell phone does,
  • Not Synced
    and they're communicating
    over the cell network
  • Not Synced
    to tell us where they are
    and how they're doing at all times.
  • Not Synced
    So believe it or not,
  • Not Synced
    we actually buy family plans
    for this fleet of vehicles
  • Not Synced
    because that's how we get the best rates.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    It's actually not a joke.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Today we're delivering about 20 percent
    of the national blood supply of Rwanda
  • Not Synced
    outside of Kigali.
  • Not Synced
    We serve about 12 hospitals,
  • Not Synced
    and we're adding hospitals to that network
    at an accelerating rate.
  • Not Synced
    All of those hospitals only receive
    blood in this way.
  • Not Synced
    And most of those hospitals actually place
    multiple order every day.
  • Not Synced
    So the reason --
  • Not Synced
    in all of health care logistics,
  • Not Synced
    you're always trading off
    waste against access.
  • Not Synced
    So if you want to solve waste,
  • Not Synced
    you keep everything centralized,
  • Not Synced
    and as a result,
  • Not Synced
    when patients are having emergencies,
  • Not Synced
    sometimes they don't have
    the medical product that they need.
  • Not Synced
    If you want to solve access,
  • Not Synced
    you stock a lot of medicine
    at the last mile,
  • Not Synced
    at hospitals or health centers,
  • Not Synced
    and then patients have
    the medicine they need,
  • Not Synced
    but you end up throwing
    a lot of medicine out,
  • Not Synced
    which is very, very expensive.
  • Not Synced
    What's so amazing is that
    the Rwandan government
  • Not Synced
    has been able to break
    this cycle permanently.
  • Not Synced
    Because doctors can get
    what they need instantly,
  • Not Synced
    they actually stock less blood
    at the hospitals.
  • Not Synced
    So although use of blood products
    has increased substantially
  • Not Synced
    at all the hospitals we serve,
  • Not Synced
    in the last nine months,
  • Not Synced
    zero units of blood have expired
    at any of these hospitals.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    That's an amazing result.
  • Not Synced
    That's actually not been achieved
  • Not Synced
    by any other health care system
    on the planet ...
  • Not Synced
    and it happened here.
  • Not Synced
    But obviously when we're talking about
    delivering medical products instantly,
  • Not Synced
    the most important thing is patience.
  • Not Synced
    And so let me give you an example.
  • Not Synced
    A couple months ago,
  • Not Synced
    a 24-year-old mother came into one
    of the hospitals that we serve,
  • Not Synced
    and she gave birth via c-section.
  • Not Synced
    But the led to complications,
  • Not Synced
    and she started to bleed.
  • Not Synced
    Luckily, the doctors had some blood
    of her blood type on hand
  • Not Synced
    that had been delivered
    via Zipline's routine service,
  • Not Synced
    and so they transfused her
    with a couple units of blood,
  • Not Synced
    but she bled out of those units
    in about 10 minutes.
  • Not Synced
    In this case,
  • Not Synced
    that mother's life is in grave danger --
  • Not Synced
    in any hospital in the world.
  • Not Synced
    But luckily her doctors who were
    taking care of her immediately called
  • Not Synced
    their distribution center,
  • Not Synced
    they placed an emergency order
  • Not Synced
    and our team actually did emergency
    delivery after emergency delivery
  • Not Synced
    after emergency delivery.
  • Not Synced
    They ended up sending
    seven units of red blood cells,
  • Not Synced
    four units of plasma
  • Not Synced
    and two units of platelets.
  • Not Synced
    That's more blood than you have
    in your entire body.
  • Not Synced
    All of it was transfused into her,
  • Not Synced
    the doctors were able to stabilize her
  • Not Synced
    and she is healthy today.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Since we launched,
  • Not Synced
    we've done about 400
    emergency deliveries like that,
  • Not Synced
    and there's a story like that one
    behind most of those emergencies.
  • Not Synced
    Here are just a couple of the moms
    who have received transfusions in this way
  • Not Synced
    in the last couple months.
  • Not Synced
    We're always reminded,
  • Not Synced
    when we can help a doctor
    save a mom's life,
  • Not Synced
    it's not just her life that you're saving.
  • Not Synced
    That's also a baby boy or a baby girl
    who has a mother while they're growing up.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    But I want to be clear.
  • Not Synced
    Post-partem hemorraging --
  • Not Synced
    it's not a Rwandan problem,
  • Not Synced
    it's not a developing-world problem;
  • Not Synced
    this is a global problem.
  • Not Synced
    Maternal health is a challenge everywhere.
  • Not Synced
    The main difference is that Rwanda
    was the first country
  • Not Synced
    to use radical technology
    to do something about it.
  • Not Synced
    And that's the reason
    that this attitude of,
  • Not Synced
    "Africa being disrupted,"
  • Not Synced
    or "advanced technology not working here,"
  • Not Synced
    or "needing aid,"
  • Not Synced
    is so totally wrong.
  • Not Synced
    Africa can be the disrupter.
  • Not Synced
    These small, agile, developing economies
    can out-innovate large rish ones.
  • Not Synced
    And they can totally leapfrog over
    the absence of legacy infastructure
  • Not Synced
    to go straight to newer
    and better systems.
  • Not Synced
    So in 2000,
  • Not Synced
    if you had said that high-quality
    cellular networks
  • Not Synced
    were about to roll out
    across all of Africa,
  • Not Synced
    people would've told you you were crazy.
  • Not Synced
    And yet --
  • Not Synced
    no one anticipated how fast those networks
    were going to connect and empower people.
  • Not Synced
    And today, 44 percent of the GDP of Kenya
    flows through [Empeza,]
  • Not Synced
    their mobile payment platform.
  • Not Synced
    And not only that,
  • Not Synced
    but our autonomous fleet of vehicles
    relies on that cellular network,
  • Not Synced
    and over the next few years
  • Not Synced
    as we start serving private
    health care facilities,
  • Not Synced
    we'll also use that mobile
    payment platform
  • Not Synced
    to collect fees for deliveries.
  • Not Synced
    So innovation leads to more innovation
    leads to more innovation.
  • Not Synced
    And meanwhile,
  • Not Synced
    most people who live
    in developed economies
  • Not Synced
    think that drone delivery
    is technologically impossible,
  • Not Synced
    let alone happening
    at national scale in east Africa.
  • Not Synced
    And I do mean East Africa,
  • Not Synced
    not just Rwanda.
  • Not Synced
    On Thursday,
  • Not Synced
    just a couple days ago,
  • Not Synced
    the Tanzanian Ministry of Health annouced
  • Not Synced
    that they are going to use
    the same technology
  • Not Synced
    to provide instant delivery of a wide
    range of medical products
  • Not Synced
    to 10 million of the hardest to reach
    people in the country.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    It's actually going to be the largest
    autonomous system anywhere in the world.
  • Not Synced
    To give you a sense
    of what this looks like,
  • Not Synced
    this is one of the first
    distribution centers.
  • Not Synced
    You can see a 75-kilometer service radius
    around the distribution center,
  • Not Synced
    and that actually allows us to serve
    hundreds of health facilities
  • Not Synced
    and hospitals,
  • Not Synced
    all of which are rural,
  • Not Synced
    from that single distribution center.
  • Not Synced
    But to serve over 20 percent
    of the population of Tanzania,
  • Not Synced
    we're going to need multiple
    distribution centers.
  • Not Synced
    We'll actually need four.
  • Not Synced
    And from these distribution centers,
  • Not Synced
    we expect to be doing several hundred
    life-saving deliveries every day,
  • Not Synced
    and this system will ultimately serve
    over 1,000 health facilities
  • Not Synced
    and hospitals in the country.
  • Not Synced
    So yeah, East Africa
    is moving really fast.
  • Not Synced
    One thing that people I think often miss
  • Not Synced
    is that these kinds of leaps
    generate compounding gains.
  • Not Synced
    If, for example, Rwanda,
  • Not Synced
    if by investing in this infrastructure
    for health care
  • Not Synced
    now has an aerial logistics network
    that they can use
  • Not Synced
    to catalyze other parts of their economy,
  • Not Synced
    like agricultre of e-commerce.
  • Not Synced
    Even more importantly,
  • Not Synced
    100 percent of the teams that we hire
    at these distribution centers are local.
  • Not Synced
    So here's our Rwandan team,
  • Not Synced
    which is a group of extraordinary
    engineers and operators.
  • Not Synced
    They run the world's only
    automated delivery system
  • Not Synced
    operating a national scale.
  • Not Synced
    They have been able to master something
  • Not Synced
    that the largest technology
    companies in the world
  • Not Synced
    have not yet been able to figure out.
  • Not Synced
    So they are total heroes.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    They're total heroes.
  • Not Synced
    Our team's mission is to deliver
    basic access to medicine
  • Not Synced
    to all seven billion on the planet,
  • Not Synced
    no matter how hard it is to reach them.
  • Not Synced
    But we often tell people
    about that mission
  • Not Synced
    and they say, "Oh,
    that's so generous of you,
  • Not Synced
    that's so philanthropic."
  • Not Synced
    No.
  • Not Synced
    Philanthropy has nothing to do with it.
  • Not Synced
    Because of the commercial contracts
    that we sign with ministries of health,
  • Not Synced
    these networks are 100 percent
    sustainable and scalable.
  • Not Synced
    And the reason we feel so strongly
    about correcting that misperception
  • Not Synced
    is that entrepreneurship
    is the only force in human history
  • Not Synced
    that has lifted millions
    of people out of poverty.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    No amount of foreign aid
  • Not Synced
    is going to sustainably employ
    250 million African youth.
  • Not Synced
    And the jobs that these kids
    may have gotten 10 years ago
  • Not Synced
    are largely being automated,
  • Not Synced
    or are being changed dramatically
    by technology.
  • Not Synced
    So they are looking for new skill sets,
  • Not Synced
    new competitive advantages.
  • Not Synced
    They're looking for startups.
  • Not Synced
    So why aren't there more startups
    that are tackling these global problems
  • Not Synced
    that are faced by billions of people
    in developing economies?
  • Not Synced
    The reason is that investors
    and entrepreneurs and totally blind
  • Not Synced
    to the opportunity.
  • Not Synced
    We think these problems are the domain
    of NGOs or governments,
  • Not Synced
    not private companies.
  • Not Synced
    That's what we have to change.
  • Not Synced
    So you may have noticed I left
    something out of the video
  • Not Synced
    that I showed you.
  • Not Synced
    I didn't show you how the planes land
  • Not Synced
    when they get back
    to the distribution center.
  • Not Synced
    So, it might be obvious to you --
  • Not Synced
    none of our planes have landing gear,
  • Not Synced
    we also don't have runways
    where we operate,
  • Not Synced
    so we have to be able to decelerate
    the plane from 100 kilometers an hour
  • Not Synced
    to zero in half of a second.
  • Not Synced
    And the way that we do that
  • Not Synced
    is we actually use a wire that tracks
    that plane as it comes in
  • Not Synced
    with centimeter-level accuracy.
  • Not Synced
    We snag the plane out of the sky,
  • Not Synced
    and we gently plop it onto
    and actively inflated cushion.
  • Not Synced
    This is basically a combination
    of an air craft carrier
  • Not Synced
    and a bouncy castle.
  • Not Synced

    So let me show you.

    And it might be obvious to you
    why I wanted to end with this video.

    and every landing.
