Yup, I built a nuclear fusion reactor
-
0:00 - 0:02So my name is Taylor Wilson.
-
0:02 - 0:04I am 17 years old
-
0:04 - 0:06and I am a nuclear physicist,
-
0:06 - 0:09which may be a little hard to believe, but I am.
-
0:09 - 0:12And I would like to make the case
-
0:12 - 0:14that nuclear fusion
-
0:14 - 0:16will be that point,
-
0:16 - 0:18that the bridge that T. Boone Pickens talked about
-
0:18 - 0:20will get us to.
-
0:20 - 0:23So nuclear fusion is our energy future.
-
0:23 - 0:25And the second point,
-
0:25 - 0:27making the case that kids can really change the world.
-
0:27 - 0:29So you may ask --
-
0:29 - 0:33(Applause)
-
0:33 - 0:35You may ask me,
-
0:35 - 0:37well how do you know what our energy future is?
-
0:37 - 0:39Well I built a fusion reactor
-
0:39 - 0:41when I was 14 years old.
-
0:41 - 0:44That is the inside of my nuclear fusion reactor.
-
0:44 - 0:46I started building this project
-
0:46 - 0:49when I was about 12 or 13 years old.
-
0:49 - 0:51I decided I wanted to make a star.
-
0:51 - 0:53Now most of you are probably saying,
-
0:53 - 0:56well there's no such thing as nuclear fusion.
-
0:56 - 0:59I don't see any nuclear power plants with fusion energy.
-
0:59 - 1:01Well it doesn't break even.
-
1:01 - 1:03It doesn't produce more energy out than I put in,
-
1:03 - 1:06but it still does some pretty cool stuff.
-
1:06 - 1:08And I assembled this in my garage,
-
1:08 - 1:10and it now lives in the physics department
-
1:10 - 1:12of the University of Nevada, Reno.
-
1:12 - 1:14And it slams together deuterium,
-
1:14 - 1:17which is just hydrogen with an extra neutron in it.
-
1:17 - 1:20So this is similar to the reaction
-
1:20 - 1:22of the proton chain that's going on inside the Sun.
-
1:22 - 1:25And I'm slamming it together so hard
-
1:25 - 1:27that that hydrogen fuses together,
-
1:27 - 1:29and in the process it has some byproducts,
-
1:29 - 1:32and I utilize those byproducts.
-
1:32 - 1:35So this previous year,
-
1:35 - 1:39I won the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
-
1:39 - 1:41I developed a detector that replaces the current detectors
-
1:41 - 1:43that Homeland Security has.
-
1:43 - 1:45For hundreds of dollars,
-
1:45 - 1:48I've developed a system that exceeds the sensitivity
-
1:48 - 1:51of detectors that are hundreds of thousands of dollars.
-
1:51 - 1:53I built this in my garage.
-
1:53 - 1:55(Applause)
-
1:55 - 1:57And I've developed a system
-
1:57 - 1:59to produce medical isotopes.
-
1:59 - 2:01Instead of requiring multi-million-dollar facilities
-
2:01 - 2:04I've developed a device that, on a very small scale,
-
2:04 - 2:06can produce these isotopes.
-
2:06 - 2:09So that's my fusion reactor in the background there.
-
2:11 - 2:13That is me at the control panel
-
2:13 - 2:15of my fusion reactor.
-
2:15 - 2:18Oh, by the way, I make yellowcake in my garage,
-
2:18 - 2:21so my nuclear program is as advanced as the Iranians.
-
2:21 - 2:24So maybe I don't want to admit to that.
-
2:24 - 2:27This is me at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland,
-
2:27 - 2:31which is the preeminent particle physics laboratory in the world.
-
2:31 - 2:33And this is me with President Obama,
-
2:33 - 2:36showing him my Homeland Security research.
-
2:36 - 2:41(Applause)
-
2:41 - 2:43So in about seven years
-
2:43 - 2:45of doing nuclear research,
-
2:45 - 2:47I started out with a dream
-
2:47 - 2:49to make a "star in a jar," a star in my garage,
-
2:49 - 2:51and I ended up meeting the president
-
2:51 - 2:54and developing things that I think can change the world,
-
2:54 - 2:56and I think other kids can too.
-
2:56 - 2:58So thank you very much.
-
2:58 - 3:11(Applause)
- Title:
- Yup, I built a nuclear fusion reactor
- Speaker:
- Taylor Wilson
- Description:
-
Taylor Wilson believes nuclear fusion is a solution to our future energy needs, and that kids can change the world. And he knows something about both of those: When he was 14, he built a working fusion reactor in his parents' garage. Now 17, he takes the TED stage at short notice to tell (the short version of) his story.
