Wellness Central: Work & Finances

  • 0:01 - 0:06
    >> So I work here on campus as well
as a waitressing job in the community
  • 0:06 - 0:10
and a babysitter so, as you can
tell, my schedule is very busy.
  • 0:10 - 0:15
    >> I never was a crane operator but I
    was a heavy-lift operator, a basic lift.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
I worked in the dock, you know
on the dock and in the ship hole.
  • 0:19 - 0:23
I worked in the warehouses and
stuff like that for 15 years.
  • 0:23 - 0:27
That job came to a dead-end and
that's why I came back to college.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
    >> So I work at the tutoring center that
we have on Columbia College as a tutor.
  • 0:34 - 0:38
Usually, like I tutor the whole day
or just segments in between classes.
  • 0:38 - 0:43
    >> My schedule is definitely busy
between work and school, whether --
  • 0:43 - 0:45
if I'm not at work, I'm in class.
  • 0:45 - 0:51
And if I'm not in class, I'm at work so
throughout my day; work, school, work, school.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    I work 20 hours and then I'm
    also, I have five classes.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    >> I actually work two jobs.
  • 0:58 - 1:03
One is here at Columbia College where I work
as a tutor in our academic achievement center.
  • 1:04 - 1:10
My other job is at a local camp where I
work outside running things like zip-line
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    and our archery course and
I also work in the kitchen.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
And that job is mostly weekends.
  • 1:17 - 1:23
    >> When I manage my finances, the first
thing I do is I set forth just my [inaudible]
  • 1:23 - 1:28
    necessities; utilities, house payments,
what I think I'm going to spend on food
  • 1:29 - 1:32
and then I have a little bit just
    stored away for personal stuff.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    >> I, myself, don't have a
specific process I use for money.
  • 1:36 - 1:41
I just try to watch what I spend and not
spend too much on things I don't really need.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    >> Oh, it's very important to manage your money.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
You know, don't get too happy
    when you get some money
  • 1:49 - 1:52
because you'll find out you'll mismanage it.
  • 1:52 - 1:58
So you've got to have the principles
of what do you need to do every month?
  • 1:58 - 2:03
Take care of your needs and maybe
you can deal with some wants
  • 2:04 - 2:07
but the needs are the most important things.
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    You've got bills to pay.
  • 2:09 - 2:12
You've got books to buy for
    your college education.
  • 2:13 - 2:17
    >> Managing my finances has kind of been
a thing that I've always been really good
  • 2:17 - 2:27
at with saving my money, building my credit,
having a savings account for if things were say
  • 2:27 - 2:32
to happen, having a calendar and
writing out what bill is due when,
  • 2:33 - 2:37
when I should use my credit
    card or anything like that.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    >> For me, money management is
    about tracking what you spend
  • 2:41 - 2:42
and trying to stick to a monthly budget.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
