  • 0:04 - 0:05
    Hi, everyone,
    my name is Ying Li.
  • 0:06 - 0:09
I'm very happy to share my dialect
    here at Wikitongues.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    I come from Tanghe County,
    Nanyang City, Henan Province.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
Tanghe is on the boarder of
    Hubei Province.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
I'm going to show you Henan dialect today.
  • 0:20 - 0:25
Henan dialect is known as Central Plains
Mandarin, one of the central dialects.
  • 0:25 - 0:29
    It sounds simliar to Mandarin,
    but it's actually very different.
  • 0:30 - 0:36
Although we call it the Henan dialect,
    it has many variations.
  • 0:36 - 0:41
    Different cities have different accents.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
For example, Nanyang City has a different
accent than Zhengzhou and Luoyang accents.
  • 0:46 - 0:51
Even counties in Nanyang share different
    accents, like Tanghe and Tongbai.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    They have different accents.
  • 0:54 - 1:01
So the accent I'm about to present for you
    can only represent Tanghe.
  • 1:01 - 1:08
Many Chinese people know this typical word
    in Henan dialect is "Zhong"...
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    "Zhong" means "Okay",
    "Bu zhong" means "not okay".
  • 1:12 - 1:15
There are also some other typical ones,
    for example...
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    "Such a hot day!
So 'dai jin' to sit in the AC room"
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    "dai jin" means "comfy (shufu)".
  • 1:22 - 1:25
Another one, "What are you doing?
    (ni zai zuo shen me?)"...
  • 1:25 - 1:30
My dialect would be "Ni gai zhi sha li?"
    or "ni gai zhua li?".
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    Another typical one,
"Have you eaten? (Ni chi fan mei you?)"
  • 1:34 - 1:36
It would be "Ni chi fan mu nou?"
  • 1:36 - 1:41
If yes, you can say, "Chi le",
if not, you can say "mu nou".
  • 1:41 - 1:43
Another one, "Do you have money?
    (Ni you qian mei you?)"
  • 1:44 - 1:47
In my dialect, it would be
    "Ni you qian mu nai?"
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    If yes, you say "you",
if no, you say "mu nai".
  • 1:51 - 1:56
    Besides those, different times
    of day are also different.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
    For example, "zao qi" means
"early in the morning (zao shang)".
  • 2:00 - 2:02
"qian banr" for "morning (shang wu)"...
  • 2:02 - 2:04
"shang wu" for "noon (zhong wu)"...
  • 2:04 - 2:06
"hou banr" for "afternoon (xia wu)"...
  • 2:06 - 2:08
"dai he sir" for "dusk (bang wan)"...
  • 2:08 - 2:10
and "he liao" for "night (wan shang)"...
  • 2:10 - 2:14
    They are completely different
    from Mandarin.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
We also call some animals different names.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    For example, in my dialect...
  • 2:20 - 2:24
"chang chong" is for "snake (she)"...
  • 2:24 - 2:26
"chu chuan" for "earth worms (qiu yin)"...
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    "ou" for "cow (niu)"...
  • 2:29 - 2:32
"huo zi" for "rabbit (tu zi)"...
  • 2:32 - 2:34
"lao bie" for "turtle (wu gui)".
  • 2:35 - 2:40
    Those are the typical ones.
    There are still more...
  • 2:40 - 2:43
"dunr" for "little stool (deng zi)"...
  • 2:44 - 2:48
    "ge ziu" for "squat (dun)"...
  • 2:49 - 2:52
"ziao mao" for "hilarious (gao xiao)"...
  • 2:52 - 2:57
    Not only do we have
    interesting names...
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    we also have interesting phrases.
  • 3:00 - 3:05
I still remember my math teacher
    from elementary school.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    I will never forget
    her "tough love" for us.
  • 3:07 - 3:12
She said things like, "You're like
Zhu Bajie who carries the torn quilt...
  • 3:12 - 3:14
you're nothing and you have nothing"...
  • 3:14 - 3:19
or "You're like the turtle in a pot,
the longer you stay, the worse you get".
  • 3:19 - 3:20
    Very tough but very funny.
  • 3:20 - 3:24
    Um...
    Those are all...
  • 3:24 - 3:28
Anyways, I think I should stop here.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
    If possible, I hope that...
  • 3:31 - 3:38
people from other parts of Henan
will share more about Henan dialect here.
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    That's all for today!
    Bye!
