The strange world of perfect people | Ruth Manus | TEDxSãoPaulo
-
0:05 - 0:07I came here to say
-
0:07 - 0:09that I can't take it anymore.
-
0:09 - 0:11I can't take it anymore, guys.
-
0:11 - 0:18I can't stand seeing so many people who
supposedly succeed at life all the time. -
0:18 - 0:24I can't stand seeing so many winners,
and wonderful people ... -
0:25 - 0:26I can't take it.
-
0:26 - 0:31I can't stand seeing people who say
they meditate at five in the morning, -
0:31 - 0:34people who have their hair
always washed, tidy, clean, -
0:34 - 0:36never have dirty hair;
-
0:36 - 0:42people who say they read an 800-page
Russian novel over the weekend; -
0:43 - 0:46people who post a picture
of a salmon filet, -
0:46 - 0:49with a crust of Brazil nut
"castanha-do-pará" -
0:49 - 0:52with mashed "mandioquinha,"
a Brazilian root from the savannah, -
0:52 - 0:54accompanied by asparagus in the oven,
-
0:54 - 0:56for Tuesday lunch!
-
0:56 - 0:59Tuesday, a working day, at lunch ...
-
1:00 - 1:03I can't take any more people
who supposedly always succeed, -
1:03 - 1:07because honestly,
especially in this quarantine, -
1:07 - 1:12I'm just focused on surviving, right?
-
1:12 - 1:16Currently, my biggest goal of success
-
1:16 - 1:20is to have a day that ends
with clean toilets, -
1:20 - 1:22a fed child,
-
1:22 - 1:25and a marriage that doesn't look
like the Third World War. -
1:25 - 1:29A day that ends like this, for me,
is a day of glory. -
1:29 - 1:35But sometimes it seems
like we're the only ones with problems -
1:35 - 1:39and who are full of flaws,
vulnerabilities, difficulties ... -
1:39 - 1:41the only ones!
-
1:41 - 1:43But there's something
wrong with that, right? -
1:44 - 1:47The truth is that things
have always been like that, right? -
1:47 - 1:51People use social media
to post their big successes, -
1:51 - 1:53their big achievements,
-
1:53 - 1:54not their failures.
-
1:55 - 2:01But in quarantine, where everyone
is having a reasonably chaotic life, -
2:01 - 2:05it seems that more and more
people appear out there -
2:05 - 2:08to show that their life remains perfect,
-
2:08 - 2:11that their success remains intact.
-
2:11 - 2:17So I open my Instagram,
and I only see people shining, right? -
2:17 - 2:19Shining in physical exercise,
-
2:19 - 2:20family harmony,
-
2:20 - 2:23housekeeping, mental balance,
-
2:23 - 2:25food ...
-
2:25 - 2:27And then I start to ask myself,
-
2:28 - 2:30"Am I the only one?
-
2:30 - 2:34Am I the only one whose life is a mess?
-
2:34 - 2:36Am I the only one
with clothes on the clothesline -
2:36 - 2:39that's been dry for three days?
-
2:39 - 2:43But I don't take them off
because if I do, I have to fold them, -
2:43 - 2:46and if I fold them, I have to store them,
and I don't want to do that. -
2:46 - 2:51Am I the only one who dines
on frozen pizza, bad pizza? -
2:51 - 2:55Am I the only one who cries
in the bathroom from time to time, -
2:55 - 2:57or every time?"
-
2:58 - 3:01When we start making these comparisons,
-
3:01 - 3:04we start to feel a little indebted,
-
3:04 - 3:05a little defeated,
-
3:05 - 3:11and worst of all, we start to think
that normality is a life of plenty, -
3:11 - 3:15and our normal life is strange.
-
3:16 - 3:19So this is the question:
-
3:20 - 3:22Who are we helping
-
3:22 - 3:26when we show ourselves
as good-looking and fit, -
3:26 - 3:30with the perfect marriage, wonderful
children, and a beautiful house? -
3:30 - 3:33Who are we contributing to
when we do this? -
3:33 - 3:35Who do we connect with
-
3:35 - 3:39when we put ourselves
in this place of perfection, -
3:39 - 3:41of false perfection?
-
3:42 - 3:46Some people already use
the term "toxic influencers" -
3:46 - 3:52to talk about these celebrities
who, even involuntarily, -
3:52 - 3:56make us feel terrible,
-
3:56 - 4:00make us feel like nothing.
-
4:00 - 4:05We see an amazing number
of slim and tanned people, -
4:05 - 4:09in bikinis, by the pool at home,
with a drink, in quarantine ... -
4:11 - 4:13I'm not tanned,
-
4:13 - 4:15I'm not slim,
-
4:15 - 4:18and I don't have a pool at home.
-
4:19 - 4:23And then we start to get
weirdly frustrated. -
4:23 - 4:25So we need to identify,
-
4:25 - 4:29especially at this time,
when we're vulnerable, -
4:29 - 4:32who's good for us, and who's bad.
-
4:33 - 4:36But there's another problem.
-
4:36 - 4:41As much as we've seen this toxic pattern
-
4:41 - 4:45of behavior, life, house, body,
-
4:45 - 4:47sometimes we end up behaving like that
-
4:47 - 4:51in our networks, in our relationships.
-
4:51 - 4:53We only externalize,
-
4:53 - 4:58only post that picture
of the beautiful and great cake. -
4:58 - 5:00When the cake is bad, we don't show it.
-
5:00 - 5:06We only show that angle of the picture
where the belly doesn't fold, you know? -
5:06 - 5:09I don't know because I've never found
that angle on my belly, -
5:09 - 5:10but a lot of people have.
-
5:11 - 5:14Some people only post that picture
with their sweetheart on a great day, -
5:14 - 5:19when, in fact, every other day
was a fight, a conflict situation. -
5:20 - 5:24Sometimes we're the ones
who don't post humanity, -
5:24 - 5:27the ones who don't show normality,
-
5:27 - 5:31and we need normal people, real people.
-
5:32 - 5:36So let's think about a few things -
five little things ... five little things. -
5:37 - 5:38First thing:
-
5:38 - 5:44No one has to be mega-productive
in this quarantine. -
5:44 - 5:47Everyone is distressed, tired, afraid.
-
5:47 - 5:51We have to fulfill our obligations
at work and home, and so forth, -
5:52 - 5:55but do what you have to do,
-
5:55 - 5:57and only do more if it's pleasurable.
-
5:57 - 6:00We shouldn't be looking
for more agonizing situations. -
6:01 - 6:03Second thing:
-
6:03 - 6:07No one is obligated to learn
how to cook 500 new recipes, -
6:07 - 6:10no one is obligated to dance Zumba
in the living room -
6:10 - 6:12to try to stay healthy,
-
6:12 - 6:17and no one is obligated to learn
how to be upside down in yoga. -
6:18 - 6:21We have to look now
for what brings us comfort, -
6:21 - 6:23what gives us peace of mind.
-
6:23 - 6:27I'll make a confession to you:
Do you know what brings me peace of mind? -
6:27 - 6:29Doing a puzzle,
-
6:29 - 6:31especially one I have of Shrek.
-
6:31 - 6:36The moment I finish
putting Princess Fiona's face together -
6:36 - 6:39is the moment I have peace of mind.
-
6:39 - 6:40I think the world will be OK,
-
6:40 - 6:43the coronavirus will go away,
and everything will be OK. -
6:43 - 6:46Some people achieve this
by being upside down in yoga. -
6:46 - 6:49I get this with Shrek's puzzle.
-
6:49 - 6:52Some people get that frying a hamburger.
-
6:52 - 6:53It doesn't matter.
-
6:53 - 6:55Search for what makes sense to you.
-
6:55 - 6:57Maybe one day, I'll learn yoga,
-
6:57 - 7:01but I won't challenge myself
any more than I do now. -
7:02 - 7:04Third thing:
-
7:04 - 7:08Nobody has to be beautiful,
fit, or great right now. -
7:08 - 7:12Although we see this
ostensibly on social media, -
7:12 - 7:14it's okay to be in pajamas,
-
7:14 - 7:17and it's okay not to wear makeup.
-
7:17 - 7:21Look for your well-being,
not things that generate more anxiety. -
7:22 - 7:23Fourth thing:
-
7:24 - 7:25Don't find it strange
-
7:25 - 7:29that your relationship is going
through a difficult period. -
7:30 - 7:31I'll tell you a secret:
-
7:32 - 7:33You're not alone.
-
7:34 - 7:36When we took a wedding vow,
-
7:36 - 7:40no one took a vow to be at home
locked in with their partner. -
7:40 - 7:42We made a vow imagining
-
7:42 - 7:45that in the morning we'd say,
"Kisses, honey! Good morning!," -
7:45 - 7:49then we'd meet about 8,
10 hours later, and have a beer. -
7:49 - 7:50It was cool.
-
7:50 - 7:53Now, enforced imprisonment?
Nobody was counting on that. -
7:53 - 7:56It's natural, guys, that we're fed up,
-
7:56 - 7:58that we have conflicts,
-
7:58 - 8:01that we're full of questions,
-
8:01 - 8:04but this is not the time for us
to make big projections -
8:04 - 8:05or make big decisions.
-
8:05 - 8:07Take a deep breath.
-
8:07 - 8:11It's only time to make big decisions
in the case of domestic violence. -
8:11 - 8:14At that time, the decision
must be immediate. -
8:14 - 8:15Don't forget that.
-
8:15 - 8:17Fifth thing:
-
8:17 - 8:19We don't have to think
-
8:19 - 8:22that life only makes sense
if it's all perfect! -
8:22 - 8:23Life is never perfect!
-
8:23 - 8:28This farce of 360-degree success,
-
8:28 - 8:31that everything is fine
in all walks of life at the same time, -
8:31 - 8:33doesn't exist.
-
8:33 - 8:37Life is made up of imperfections,
and that's the grace of life. -
8:37 - 8:39It's okay if your life isn't perfect.
-
8:39 - 8:41That's how we must live,
-
8:41 - 8:45and we don't have to carry
the burden of seeking that perfection. -
8:46 - 8:50Brené Brown explains
that showing yourself vulnerable -
8:50 - 8:53has nothing to do with exposing
your private life, your intimate life, -
8:53 - 8:55or your problems.
-
8:55 - 9:00Showing yourself vulnerable
has to do with being brave enough -
9:00 - 9:03so you don't need to pretend
to be perfect. -
9:03 - 9:06When I accept my vulnerability,
-
9:06 - 9:09that's when I connect
with people the most. -
9:09 - 9:11On my social networks,
-
9:11 - 9:15the most-welcomed posts
by my followers are those - -
9:15 - 9:18for example, one that I made
recently, in which I say, -
9:18 - 9:21"I've been wearing a sock
of each pair for 15 days!" -
9:21 - 9:24I don't know anymore
where my sock pairs are. -
9:24 - 9:27I wear white with gray,
I wear black with white ... -
9:27 - 9:29I gave up!
-
9:29 - 9:32The successful posts are not selfies,
-
9:32 - 9:34all wonderful, with my best makeup,
-
9:34 - 9:36because I can't do that.
-
9:37 - 9:40Humanity generates connection,
-
9:40 - 9:43vulnerability generates identity,
-
9:43 - 9:47and showing our faults makes people accept
-
9:47 - 9:51that their faults are absolutely normal.
-
9:51 - 9:56So let's show our dirty hair,
our sink full of dishes, -
9:56 - 9:59our sweatpants, our unique socks.
-
10:00 - 10:04Let's make our presence
in other people's lives -
10:04 - 10:08a comfort, not a thorn in their side,
-
10:08 - 10:11because our lives are full of thorns,
-
10:11 - 10:15and all we need is a little comfort.
-
10:15 - 10:17Thank you.
-
10:17 - 10:20(Applause) (Cheers)
-
10:20 - 10:23Audience: Wonderful! Powerful!
-
10:23 - 10:26(Applause) (Cheers)
-
10:26 - 10:29Audience: Beautiful! You rock! Very good!
