Bandura and Social Learning Theory

  • 0:01 - 0:32
(MUSIC). My initial research and observational learning
  • 0:33 - 0:36
centered on the social modeling of aggression.
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    In our experiment,
  • 0:38 - 0:41
preschool children observed an adult model
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    beat up an inflated Bobo
  • 0:43 - 0:43
    doll
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    in novel ways.
  • 0:46 - 0:47
She pummeled it with a mallet,
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    flung it in the air,
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    kicked it repeatedly,
  • 0:54 - 0:55
and threw it down and beat it.
  • 0:56 - 1:00
And these novel acts were embellished with hostile remarks.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
The children were then left in the playroom
  • 1:06 - 1:08
that had a variety of toys.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
Now, the children who had observed the aggressive modeling
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    adopted much of it.
  • 1:20 - 1:24
They even invented new ways for attacking the doll.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
Children who had not observed the adult model
  • 1:31 - 1:33
were less aggressive and never hit the Bobo
  • 1:33 - 1:36
doll in the novel ways that were bottled.
  • 1:37 - 1:41
The children who had been exposed to the aggressive modeling
  • 1:41 - 1:43
showed an increased attraction to guns
  • 1:44 - 1:46
even though the adult model never used them.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
At the time we did this research,
  • 1:51 - 1:55
it was widely believed that seeing others venting aggression
  • 1:55 - 1:58
would drain away the viewer's aggressive drive.
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    As you can see,
  • 2:00 - 2:04
exposure to modeled aggression is hardly cathartic.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
Televised violence has four major effects.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
It teaches aggressive styles of behavior,
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    weakens restraints over aggression,
  • 2:18 - 2:22
desensitizes and habituates viewers to human cruelty
  • 2:22 - 2:25
and shapes viewers images of reality.
  • 2:27 - 2:31
With the enormous advances in the technology of communication,
  • 2:32 - 2:35
observational learning from the symbolic environment
  • 2:36 - 2:39
is placing an increasingly powerful role
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    in people's everyday lives.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    Human attitudes,
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    values,
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    styles of behavior
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    are now being modeled worldwide.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    As a result,
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    televised modeling
  • 2:57 - 3:02
is becoming an influential vehicle for political
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    and social change.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    We now have global broadcasts
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    of societal conflicts
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    as they are happening.
