How to build your confidence -- and spark it in others

  • Not Synced
So when I was a little girl,
  • Not Synced
a book sat on the coffee table
    in our living room,
  • Not Synced
just steps from our front door.
  • Not Synced
And the living room is a first impression.
  • Not Synced
    Ours had white carpet
  • Not Synced
and a curio of my mother's
    most treasured collectibles.
  • Not Synced
    That room represented the sacrifices
    of generations gone by
  • Not Synced
who, by poverty or by policy,
  • Not Synced
couldn't afford a curio of collectibles,
  • Not Synced
let alone a middle class house
    to put them in.
  • Not Synced
That room had to stay perfect.
  • Not Synced
But I would miss messing up
    that perfect room every day
  • Not Synced
    just to see that book.
  • Not Synced
On the cover sat a woman
    named Septima Clark.
  • Not Synced
    She sat in perfect profile
with her face raised to the sky.
  • Not Synced
    She had perfect salt-and-pepper cornrows
  • Not Synced
platted down the sides of her head,
  • Not Synced
and pride and wisdom just emanated
    from her dark skin.
  • Not Synced
    Septima Clark was an activist
    and an educator,
  • Not Synced
a woman after whom I would eventually
    model my own career,
  • Not Synced
but more than all the words
    she ever spoke,
  • Not Synced
that single portrait of Septima Clark,
  • Not Synced
    it defined confidence for me
  • Not Synced
before I ever even knew the word.
  • Not Synced
    It may sound simple,
  • Not Synced
    but confidence is something
that we underestimate the importance of.
  • Not Synced
We treat it like a nice-to-have
    instead of a must-have.
  • Not Synced
We place value on knowledge and resources
  • Not Synced
above what we deem to be
    the soft skill of confidence.
  • Not Synced
    But by most measures,
    we have more knowledge
  • Not Synced
    and more resources now
than at any other point in history,
  • Not Synced
    and still injustice abounds
    and challenges persist.
  • Not Synced
    If knowledge and resources
    were all that we needed,
  • Not Synced
    we wouldn't still be here.
  • Not Synced
    Now, I believe that confidence
is one of the main things
  • Not Synced
    missing from the equation.
  • Not Synced
    I'm completely obsessed with confidence.
  • Not Synced
    It's been the most important
    journey of my life,
  • Not Synced
a journey that to be honest I'm still on.
  • Not Synced
    Confidence is the necessary spark
    before everything that follows.
  • Not Synced
    Confidence is the difference
    between being inspired
  • Not Synced
    and actually getting started,
  • Not Synced
between trying and doing until it's done.
  • Not Synced
    Confidence helps us keep going
    even when we fail.
  • Not Synced
The name of the book on that coffee table
    was "I Dream A World,"
  • Not Synced
and today I dream a world
    where revolutionary confidence
  • Not Synced
    helps bring about our most
    ambitious dreams into reality.
  • Not Synced
That's exactly the kind of world
that I wanted to create in my classroom
  • Not Synced
    when I was a teacher,
  • Not Synced
    like a Willy Wonka world
    of pure imagination,
  • Not Synced
    but make it scholarly.
  • Not Synced
All of my students were black or brown.
  • Not Synced
All of them were growing up
    in a low-income circumstance.
  • Not Synced
    Some of them were immigrants,
    some of them were disabled,
  • Not Synced
but all of them were the very last people
  • Not Synced
this world invites to be confident.
  • Not Synced
That's why it was so important
that my classroom be a place
  • Not Synced
    where my students could build
    the muscle of confidence,
  • Not Synced
where they could learn to face each day
    with the confidence you need
  • Not Synced
to redesign the world in the image
    of your own dreams.
  • Not Synced
After all, what are academic skills
without the confidence to use those skills
  • Not Synced
to go out and change the world.
  • Not Synced
Now is when I should tell you about
two of my students, Jamal and Regina.
  • Not Synced
    Now, I've changed their names,
but their stories remain the same.
  • Not Synced
    Jamal was brilliant, but unfocused.
  • Not Synced
He would squirm in his chair
    during independent work
  • Not Synced
and he would never stay still
for more than three or four minutes.
  • Not Synced
    Students like Jamal
    can perplex brand new teachers
  • Not Synced
    because they're not quite sure
how to support young people like him.
  • Not Synced
    I took a direct approach.
  • Not Synced
    I negotiated with Jamal.
  • Not Synced
If he could give me focused work,
  • Not Synced
    then he could do it
    from anywhere in the classroom,
  • Not Synced
    from our classroom rug,
    from behind my desk,
  • Not Synced
    from inside his classroom locker,
which turned out to be his favorite place.
  • Not Synced
    Jamal's least favorite
    subject was writing,
  • Not Synced
and he never wanted to read
what he had written out loud in class,
  • Not Synced
but we were still making progress.
  • Not Synced
One day, I decided to host
    a mock 2008 presidential election
  • Not Synced
    in my classroom.
  • Not Synced
My third graders had to research
    and write a stump speech
  • Not Synced
    for their chosen candidate:
  • Not Synced
    Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton,
    or John McCain.
  • Not Synced
    The heavy favorites were obvious,
  • Not Synced
but one student chose John McCain.
  • Not Synced
    It was Jamal.
  • Not Synced
Jamal finally decided to read something
that he had written out loud in class,
  • Not Synced
    and sure enough, Jamal stunned
all of us with his brilliance.
  • Not Synced
    Just like Jamal's dad,
    John McCain was a veteran,
  • Not Synced
and just like Jamal's dad protected him,
  • Not Synced
    Jamal believed that John McCain
    would protect the entire country.
  • Not Synced
And he wasn't my candidate of choice,
    but it didn't matter,
  • Not Synced
    because the entire class
    erupted into applause,
  • Not Synced
    a standing ovation
    for our brave friend Jamal
  • Not Synced
    who finally showed up
    as his most confident self
  • Not Synced
for the first time that year.
  • Not Synced
    And then there was Regina.
  • Not Synced
    Regina was equally
    as brilliant, but active.
  • Not Synced
She'd inevitably finish her work early,
  • Not Synced
and then she'd get on about the business
    of distracting other students:
  • Not Synced
    walking, talking,
  • Not Synced
    passing those notes
that teachers hate but kids love.
  • Not Synced
You look like you passed a lot of them.
  • Not Synced
Despite my high ideals for our classroom,
  • Not Synced
    I would too often default
    to my baser instincts,
  • Not Synced
    and I would choose
    compliance over confidence.
  • Not Synced
Regina was a glitch in my intended system.
  • Not Synced
A good teacher can correct misbehavior
  • Not Synced
but still remain a student's champion,
  • Not Synced
but on one day in particular,
  • Not Synced
I just plain old chose control.
  • Not Synced
    I snapped,
  • Not Synced
    and my approach
    didn't communicate to Regina
  • Not Synced
that she was being a distraction.
  • Not Synced
    My approach communicated to Regina
that she herself was a distraction.
  • Not Synced
I watched the light go out from her eyes,
  • Not Synced
    and that light sparked joy
    in our classroom.
  • Not Synced
    I had just extinguished it.
  • Not Synced
    The entire class became irritable,
  • Not Synced
    and we didn't recover
for the rest of the day.
  • Not Synced
I think about the day often,
  • Not Synced
    and I have literally prayed
  • Not Synced
that I did not do irreparable harm,
    because as a woman
  • Not Synced
    who used to be
a little girl just like Regina,
  • Not Synced
I know that I could have started
the process of killing her confidence
  • Not Synced
    forever.
  • Not Synced
A lack of confidence pulls us
    down from the bottom
  • Not Synced
and weighs us down from the top,
  • Not Synced
    crushing us between a flurry
    of can'ts, won'ts, and impossibles.
  • Not Synced
    Without confidence, we get stuck,
  • Not Synced
    and when we get stuck,
    we can't even get started.
  • Not Synced
    Instead of getting mired
in what can get in our way,
  • Not Synced
    confidence invites us
    to perform with certainty.
  • Not Synced
We all operate a little differently
when we're sure we can win
  • Not Synced
versus if we just hope we will.
  • Not Synced
Now, this can be a helpful check.
  • Not Synced
If you don't have enough confidence,
  • Not Synced
it could be because you need
    to readjust your goal.
  • Not Synced
If you have too much confidence,
  • Not Synced
    it could be because
you're not rooted in something real.
  • Not Synced
    Not everyone lacks confidence.
  • Not Synced
We make it easier in this society
  • Not Synced
for some people to gain confidence
  • Not Synced
    because they fit our preferred
    archetype of leadership.
  • Not Synced
We reward confidence in some people
  • Not Synced
and we punish confidence in others,
  • Not Synced
and all the while far too many people
  • Not Synced
    are walking around
    every single day without it.
  • Not Synced
    For some of us,
  • Not Synced
    confidence is a revolutionary choice,
  • Not Synced
and it would be our greatest shame
  • Not Synced
to see our best ideas go unrealized
  • Not Synced
and our brightest dreams go unreached
  • Not Synced
    all because we lacked
    the engine of confidence.
  • Not Synced
That's not a risk I'm willing to take.
  • Not Synced
So how do we crack the code on confidence?
  • Not Synced
    In my estimation,
it takes at least three things:
  • Not Synced
    permission, community, and curiosity.
  • Not Synced
    Permission births confidence,
  • Not Synced
    community nurtures it,
  • Not Synced
    and curiosity affirms it.
  • Not Synced
In education, we've got a saying,
  • Not Synced
that you can't be what you can't see.
  • Not Synced
When I was a little girl,
    I couldn't show confidence
  • Not Synced
    until someone showed me.
  • Not Synced
My family used to do everything together,
  • Not Synced
    including the mundane things,
    like buying a new car,
  • Not Synced
and every time we did this,
  • Not Synced
    I'd watch my parents
put on the exact same performance.
  • Not Synced
    We'd enter the dealership,
  • Not Synced
    and my dad would sit
  • Not Synced
    while my mom shopped.
  • Not Synced
When my mom found a car that she liked,
  • Not Synced
they'd go in and meet with the dealer,
  • Not Synced
    and inevitably, every time
the dealer would turn his attention
  • Not Synced
and his body to my dad,
  • Not Synced
    assuming that he
    controlled the purse strings
  • Not Synced
    and therefore this negotiation.
  • Not Synced
    "Rev. Packnett," they'd say,
"how do we get you into this car today?"
  • Not Synced
    My dad would inevitably
    respond the same way.
  • Not Synced
    He'd slowly and silently
    gesture toward my mother
  • Not Synced
    and then put his hands
    right back in his lap.
  • Not Synced
It might have been the complete shock
  • Not Synced
    of negotiating finances
with a black woman in the '80s,
  • Not Synced
    but whatever it was,
  • Not Synced
    I'd watch my mother
    work these car dealers over
  • Not Synced
    until they were basically
giving the car away for free.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
She would never crack a smile.
  • Not Synced
She would never be afraid to walk away.
  • Not Synced
I know my mom just thought
she was getting a good deal on a minivan,
  • Not Synced
but what she was actually doing
    was giving me permission
  • Not Synced
    to defy expectations
  • Not Synced
and to show up confidently in my skill
    no matter who doubts me.
  • Not Synced
    Confidence needs permission to exist,
  • Not Synced
and community is the safety place
    to try confidence on.
  • Not Synced
I traveled to Kenya this year
    to learn about women's empowerment
  • Not Synced
    among Masai women.
  • Not Synced
There I met a group of young women
  • Not Synced
    called Team Lioness,
  • Not Synced
    among Kenya's first all-female
    community ranger groups.
  • Not Synced
    These eight brave young women
    were making history
  • Not Synced
    in just their teenage years,
  • Not Synced
and I asked Purity, the most verbose
    young ranger among them,
  • Not Synced
    "Do you ever get scared?"
  • Not Synced
I swear to you, I want to tattoo
her response all over my entire body.
  • Not Synced
She said, "Of course I do,
  • Not Synced
but I call on my sisters.
  • Not Synced
    They remind me that we
will be better than these men
  • Not Synced
and that we will not fail."
  • Not Synced
    Purity's confidence to chase down
    lions and catch poachers,
  • Not Synced
it didn't come from her athletic ability
    or even just her faith.
  • Not Synced
    Her confidence was
    propped up by sisterhood,
  • Not Synced
    by community.
  • Not Synced
    What she was basically saying
  • Not Synced
was that if I am ever in doubt,
  • Not Synced
I need you to be there
  • Not Synced
    to restore my hope
  • Not Synced
    and to rebuild my certainty.
