Unraveling the Lore of Mister Mushroom

  • 0:11 - 0:16
If we want to understand Mister Mushroom,
then the obvious place to start is with Schrödinger’s
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    Equation.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
One of the most prevailing theories in the
realm of quantum mechanics is the many world
  • 0:20 - 0:24
interpretation first postulated by Hugh Everett
    III.
  • 0:24 - 0:29
The seeming collapse of the wavefunction of
a photon first demonstrated by the now infamous
  • 0:29 - 0:33
double slit experiment is no longer an issue,
because the superposition is extended beyond
  • 0:33 - 0:37
the particle to include the measuring device
    and the human observer.
  • 0:37 - 0:41
Team Cherry are clearly fans of Everett’s
work, as Mister Mushroom is definite proof
  • 0:41 - 0:46
of the many worlds interpretation being true
in the world of Hollow Knight.
  • 0:46 - 0:53
Now video games having multiple or parallel
universes is not a unique concept.
  • 0:53 - 0:58
Dark Souls I uses it as a clever excuse to
allow for a canonical explanation for PvP.
  • 0:58 - 1:04
Dark Souls III uses it as a lazy excuse to
reuse characters for the sake of fanservice.
  • 1:04 - 1:08
Undertale uses it as well, but I’m not touching
that game with a ten foot pole.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
But Mister Mushroom is a bit more unique.
  • 1:11 - 1:15
Just to catch anyone up who doesn’t know,
Mister Mushroom is this weird NPC that shows
  • 1:15 - 1:18
up in various places throughout Hallownest.
  • 1:18 - 1:22
His location is hinted at by this strange
lore tablet located in the Kingdom’s Edge.
  • 1:22 - 1:28
The tablet begins by saying “We speak the
path of the Master Herald, he who would signal
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    an Age's end.”
  • 1:29 - 1:33
Mister Mushroom will only appear after the
Knight has destroyed the three Dreamers.
  • 1:33 - 1:38
So the ending age in this instance would appear
to be the end of the stasis over Hallownest.
  • 1:38 - 1:42
After interacting with Mister Mushroom with
the Spore Shroom charm equipped in every location,
  • 1:42 - 1:48
he will literally rocket into the sky like
how I assume Elon Musk gets around.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
He then appears after the game’s credits
as the words “To Be Continued” are thrown
  • 1:51 - 1:55
on the screen in giant letters like this is
    a fucking JoJo reference.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
    [Funny Meme Music]
  • 1:58 - 2:02
Now the fact that “To Be Continued” only
shows up with Mister Mushroom implies that
  • 2:02 - 2:05
he is connected to a future game from Team
    Cherry.
  • 2:05 - 2:12
And as we start to analyze his dialogue, we’ll
see that this makes like 40% sense, which
  • 2:12 - 2:14
is pretty good for Hollow Knight lore.
  • 2:14 - 2:18
So basically you can encounter Mister Mushroom
a total of seven times in game.
  • 2:18 - 2:22
Each time, he is basically ignoring us and
appears to be talking to somebody else.
  • 2:22 - 2:26
Now, mushrooms in Hollow Knight exhibit a
shared mind, meaning they can talk to each
  • 2:26 - 2:29
other in a manner similar to telepathy.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
So it makes sense that Mister Mushroom could
    be talking to somebody else.
  • 2:33 - 2:38
Once we meet Mister Mushroom for the final
time, he finally does talk to the Knight,
  • 2:38 - 2:42
giving a flowery speech about journeys and
    destinations and all that garbage.
  • 2:42 - 2:46
But what is more interesting here is how he
has conversations with creatures we cannot
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    see.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
Who exactly is Mister Mushroom talking to?
  • 2:50 - 2:54
Well, I would say we know with a good deal
of certainty what at least two of these conversations
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    are actually about.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
Let’s start with the first conversation.
  • 2:58 - 3:03
Mister Mushroom mentions that the person he
is talking to was able to save their friend,
  • 3:03 - 3:06
and also mentions that this person isn’t
    hungry anymore.
  • 3:06 - 3:11
This is a pretty obvious reference to Hungry
Knight, the first game ever made by Team Cherry.
  • 3:11 - 3:16
Hungry Knight was made during Ludum Dare 27,
    a popular game jam event.
  • 3:16 - 3:20
William Pellen and Ari Gibson used this game
jam as a way to practice working together
  • 3:20 - 3:24
on games, and Hungry Knight was the result.
  • 3:24 - 3:29
In this game, you play as the Hungry Knight,
who has to eat cherries to stay alive so they
  • 3:29 - 3:32
can bring their friend back from the dead
    by collecting masks.
  • 3:32 - 3:37
But apparently, this character we see in Hungry
Knight is somehow talking to Mister Mushroom
  • 3:37 - 3:41
from Hollow Knight, which in turn, would mean
that the Knight and the Hungry Knight are
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    in the same multiverse.
  • 3:43 - 3:47
Now before you shit my pants and try to tell
me that this completely breaks the entire
  • 3:47 - 3:52
lore of Hollow Knight, let me point out that
Team Cherry does this type of stuff in other
  • 3:52 - 3:53
parts of the game as well.
  • 3:53 - 3:56
Let’s take a look at the Shrine of Believers.
  • 3:56 - 4:02
In the Spirit’s Glade, the Knight is able
to access a hidden area, full of strange tablets.
  • 4:02 - 4:07
The text on these tablets are actually messages
from Kickstarter backers, who backed Hollow
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    Knight in 2014.
  • 4:09 - 4:13
Some of these are pretty interesting, like
the references to Dark Souls, because you
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    guys remember Dark Souls, right?
  • 4:15 - 4:17
This one is a stolen quote from H.P.
  • 4:17 - 4:18
    Lovecraft.
  • 4:18 - 4:22
This one just says “The Collective lives
    on.”
  • 4:22 - 4:27
This one talks about a guy named Baron Robert
Apples who was the first of his kind to enslave
  • 4:27 - 4:28
    a Gantrus.
  • 4:28 - 4:31
What the fuck is a Gantrus?
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    Let’s see here.
  • 4:33 - 4:34
    Uhh…
  • 4:35 - 4:36
    Umm….
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    I’m just gonna…
  • 4:38 - 4:44
Anyway, this area is guarded by this solitary
moth spirit who explains that these utterings
  • 4:44 - 4:50
are from a group of people united in a mysterious
cause who exist in another world.
  • 4:50 - 4:55
This implies that the Hollow Knight kickstarter
and our very reality are actually a part of
  • 4:55 - 4:56
    Hollow Knight canon.
  • 4:56 - 5:02
This means that technically King of the Hill
and Hollow Knight are in the same universe.
  • 5:02 - 5:07
So basically what I am saying is, expect a
Bobby Hill lore video very soon.
  • 5:07 - 5:12
Getting back to Mister Mushroom, we have a
pretty good idea about what his third conversation
  • 5:12 - 5:13
    is referring to.
  • 5:13 - 5:18
He is talking about how the dead have no use
for wealth and how this person is providing
  • 5:18 - 5:20
    for a big brood.
  • 5:20 - 5:24
This is a clear reference to the other game
Team Cherry created before working on Hollow
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    Knight: Tomb Cat.
  • 5:26 - 5:30
This was a game where you raid pyramids for
money so that you could take care of your
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    young.
  • 5:31 - 5:33
These two references are the most obvious.
  • 5:33 - 5:38
In fact, in his final encounter, Mister Mushroom
    hints at these games again.
  • 5:38 - 5:39
    He says:
  • 5:39 - 5:43
And if those stops can't be lovely things,
    wouldn't you say?
  • 5:43 - 5:49
    Transcendent plateaus, distant sandy lands,
    vast ancient kingdoms.
  • 5:49 - 5:53
Yours was not the first, nor will it be the
last, but it's a unique and special thing
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    nonetheless.
  • 5:55 - 6:00
    Transcendent plains, distant sandy lands,
and vast ancient kingdoms seem to relate to
  • 6:00 - 6:03
Hungry Knight, Tomb Cat and Hollow Knight
    respectively.
  • 6:03 - 6:08
This dialogue also reinforces the idea that
Mister Mushroom is some kind of traveler,
  • 6:08 - 6:11
moving through the lands created by Team Cherry.
  • 6:11 - 6:15
But of course, this is where our tracks stop
    cold.
  • 6:15 - 6:18
Mister Mushroom still has five more dialogue
    entries we need to analyze.
  • 6:18 - 6:23
And I’m sure you’re a super busy person
with very little free time to waste, so let
  • 6:23 - 6:27
me just say that we are about to enter pure
    speculation territory.
  • 6:27 - 6:31
I have spent the last three years of my life
thinking about this shit, but at the end of
  • 6:31 - 6:35
the day, this dialogue is just too open ended
    to really nail down.
  • 6:35 - 6:41
Now there are other games that have been produced
by William Pellen and Ari Gibson separately.
  • 6:41 - 6:46
Through his job at an animation company, Ari
Gibson worked on classics like de Blob, Megamind:
  • 6:46 - 6:52
Mega Team Unite, de Blob 2 and M. Night Shyamalan’s
    The Last Airbender.
  • 6:52 - 6:57
Now it’s been a while since I’ve watched
Shyamalan’s breathtaking film, but I think
  • 6:57 - 7:01
there is something to do with Sokka’s girlfriend
becoming the spirit of the moon because the
  • 7:01 - 7:05
previous spirit of the moon was killed when
    the fire nation attacked.
  • 7:05 - 7:09
And in conversation six, Mister Mushroom says
    to trust the moon.
  • 7:09 - 7:11
So maybe he is talking to Sokka?
  • 7:12 - 7:15
    “It’s a giant mushroom.”
  • 7:15 - 7:20
Megamind is all about how our perceptions
of heroes and villians often lack nuance,
  • 7:20 - 7:22
and tend to change over time.
  • 7:22 - 7:26
This theme lines up pretty nicely with conversation
    four.
  • 7:26 - 7:31
As for William, he worked on several video
games by himself in his free time.
  • 7:31 - 7:36
The two most popular games like this are Return
    to Booty Grotto and Lulanda.
  • 7:36 - 7:40
Unfortunately, neither one of these games
seem to be related to Mister Mushroom at all.
  • 7:40 - 7:46
But of course, William has come up with several
games that we only know a little bit about.
  • 7:46 - 7:50
When he was a kid, William would make game
manuals for his own game ideas.
  • 7:50 - 7:54
What if Mister Mushroom is actually talking
to characters from these games William designed
  • 7:54 - 8:00
back in the 90s like Castlemania III or Shadowmaster:
    Quest of the Past.
  • 8:00 - 8:06
In fact, William actually designed a board
    game called The Egyptian Game.
  • 8:06 - 8:11
In this game, you had to find a sphinx's nose
    while avoiding evil Mummies and…
  • 8:11 - 8:12
    Sonic?
  • 8:12 - 8:15
Now this is clearly just a Chutes and Ladders
    rip off.
  • 8:15 - 8:21
But this game is all about finding a nose,
and in conversation two, Mister Mushroom mentions
  • 8:21 - 8:24
“if you have a keen nose, use it”.
  • 8:24 - 8:27
This is an oddly specific reference.
  • 8:27 - 8:30
Also he says to beware of those who are hunting
    you.
  • 8:30 - 8:35
ie the mother fucking mummies and the mother
    fucking Sonic.
  • 8:35 - 8:40
So in this instance, Mister Mushroom would
be talking to whoever played this board game
  • 8:40 - 8:46
that William made when he was a child, which
makes a lot of sense if…
  • 8:46 - 8:47
    if you… think…
  • 8:48 - 8:49
Okay this might be a dead end.
  • 8:51 - 8:53
    Let’s rethink this.
  • 8:53 - 8:56
We have five conversations left to figure
out, but they don’t seem to be referencing
  • 8:56 - 9:00
any games William and Ari worked on separately.
  • 9:00 - 9:05
Perhaps these are references to games that
Team Cherry didn’t actually work on.
  • 9:05 - 9:08
But how would we ever figure out which games
    these would be?
  • 9:08 - 9:11
I mean, just think about how many games exist
    today.
  • 9:11 - 9:13
There must be at least 30.
  • 9:13 - 9:17
Well, it would make the most sense to look
at games that we know Team Cherry took inspiration
  • 9:17 - 9:20
    from when making Hollow Knight.
  • 9:20 - 9:28
This includes Zelda II, the Adventure of Link,
Faxanadu, Paper Mario, Pikmin, Mega Man X,
  • 9:28 - 9:34
Super Metroid, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow,
and Ori and the Will of the Wisp, er…wait.
  • 9:34 - 9:39
If we dig through these games hard enough,
maybe we can see some connection between them
  • 9:39 - 9:41
    and Mister Mushroom’s dialogue.
  • 9:41 - 9:47
As it turns out, conversation six actually
kinda lines up with the story of Castlevania:
  • 9:47 - 9:48
    Aria of Sorrow.
  • 9:48 - 9:53
We, of course have the moon, where Dracula’s
castle was sealed away in 1999, as well as
  • 9:53 - 9:57
the double crossing Graham who actually is
only interested in becoming the reincarnated
  • 9:57 - 10:01
Dracula which he thinks is possible because
he was born the same day Dracula was destroyed
  • 10:01 - 10:02
    and that…
  • 10:02 - 10:04
    I’m sorry, what was that?
  • 10:04 - 10:07
You have no idea what the fuck I’m talking
    about?
  • 10:07 - 10:09
Well… maybe you need a little context.
  • 10:09 - 10:14
The lore of Castlevania begins in the year
    1094.
  • 10:14 - 10:19
Leon Belmont is a hero of knighthood, but
one day his fiance Sara was kidnapped.
  • 10:19 - 10:26
Leon learns from his bedridden friend Mathias
Cronqvist, that his love has been stolen by
  • 10:26 - 10:31
a malicious vampire going by the terrifying
    name, Walter.
  • 10:31 - 10:36
Unfortunately, by the time Leon finds his
beloved, Sara has already been tainted by
  • 10:36 - 10:41
the vampire, so she sacrificed her soul to
enchant Leon’s whip, turning it into the
  • 10:41 - 10:42
    Vampire Killer.
  • 10:42 - 10:48
So Leon kills Walter, but it turns out this
whole thing was orchestrated by Mathias, who
  • 10:48 - 10:53
then becomes a vampire himself and flees into
the country, becoming known as Dracula.
  • 10:53 - 10:58
In retaliation, Leon Belmont swears that the
Belmont family will hunt down vampires for
  • 10:58 - 11:01
as long as the game franchise is profitable.
  • 11:01 - 11:06
And so Dracula keeps trying to wipe out humanity
as the Belmonts keep bitch slapping his ass
  • 11:06 - 11:09
back into his coffin for another prolonged
    hibernation.
  • 11:09 - 11:15
It isn’t until 1999 that the epic Demon
Castle Wars take place and it is believed
  • 11:15 - 11:19
that Dracula is finally destroyed once and
    for all.
  • 11:19 - 11:24
His giant castle is sealed away inside the
darkness of an eclipse and the Catholic church
  • 11:24 - 11:28
tries to erase all memory of Dracula or the
    Belmont family.
  • 11:28 - 11:34
This brings us to 2035, when the events of
Aria of Sorrow finally take place.
  • 11:34 - 11:40
Two childhood friends, Soma Cruz and Mina
Hakuba are going to the Hakuba Shrine to witness
  • 11:40 - 11:42
the first solar eclipse of the century.
  • 11:42 - 11:47
But they end up actually traveling into the
eclipse and arriving at Dracula’s castle.
  • 11:47 - 11:52
Soma learns that he has the power to control
monsters, and starts on a quest to escape
  • 11:52 - 11:56
Dracula’s castle and learn a little bit
    about himself along the way.
  • 11:56 - 12:01
To do so he leaves Mina behind in a protective
barrier created by Genya Arikado, who is actually
  • 12:01 - 12:05
    Dracula’s son Alucard in disguise.
  • 12:05 - 12:10
You see back in the 15th century Dracula fucked
doctor but then she… you know what, nevermind.
  • 12:10 - 12:12
    It’s a whole thing.
  • 12:12 - 12:18
Anyway, Soma meets a cast of colorful characters
who also happen to be running around Dracula’s
  • 12:18 - 12:24
castle, such as Genya, Yoko Belnades, Hammer,
    and Julius Belmont.
  • 12:24 - 12:28
But there is one character, Graham Jones,
who believes he is destined to become the
  • 12:28 - 12:29
    next Dracula.
  • 12:29 - 12:34
He doesn’t mention this when Soma first
meets him, and Yoko even warns Soma to be
  • 12:34 - 12:35
    weary of Graham.
  • 12:35 - 12:40
So yeah, a lot of this tracks to what Mister
    Mushroom actually says.
  • 12:40 - 12:44
Mentioning that the person left a girl somewhere,
telling them to trust in something, but not
  • 12:44 - 12:48
a certain man, mentioning the moon.
  • 12:48 - 12:52
Not sure why you would trust the moon, but
you know what let’s just ignore that.
  • 12:52 - 12:56
So that just leaves us with four more conversations
    to figure out.
  • 12:56 - 13:01
As for conversation two, the comment about
not relying on your eyes and using your nose
  • 13:01 - 13:06
might be a reference to Pikmin, because Captain
Olimar’s eyes are never fucking open and
  • 13:06 - 13:07
he’s got a giant ass schnauzer.
  • 13:07 - 13:11
And there are numerous natural predators to
    the pikmin.
  • 13:11 - 13:19
Such as the Bulborb, the Waterwraith, the
Smoky Progg, the Scuttlebug, Celine Dion,
  • 13:19 - 13:27
the Albino Bulborb, the Puffstool, the Fiery
Young Yellow Wollywag, and of course, the
  • 13:27 - 13:29
    Bike Bulborb.
  • 13:29 - 13:35
As for conversation five, it mentions coming
back up because things down below are dangerous,
  • 13:35 - 13:39
and that they could come back up and wander
    around aimlessly.
  • 13:39 - 13:44
Now this sounds like the general experience
people have while playing a Metroidvania,
  • 13:44 - 13:48
so I could see this being a cheeky reference
to Metroid or Super Metroid, since those games
  • 13:48 - 13:51
start from the top and then go downward.
  • 13:51 - 13:57
Also, maybe I’m just stupid but it’s really
easy to get lost in these games.
  • 13:57 - 14:00
Conversation four uses both the words “hero”
and “time”, so let’s just say that’s
  • 14:00 - 14:01
    a reference to Zelda.
  • 14:01 - 14:05
That just leaves one final conversation from
    Mister Mushroom.
  • 14:05 - 14:10
“It’s not by tools that you’ll triumph,
it’s through your smarts, your speed, your
  • 14:10 - 14:11
    determination...”.
  • 14:11 - 14:17
Now this is so nondescript and vague that
this could be talking about anything, Paper
  • 14:17 - 14:23
Mario, Mega Man X, or maybe even one of these
    weeb shit games.
  • 14:23 - 14:29
So to recap, these are the characters Mister
    Mushroom might be talking to.
  • 14:29 - 14:32
But to be honest, this whole thing seems a
    bit weird.
  • 14:32 - 14:37
Would Team Cherry really try and shove their
own character into the lore of other games?
  • 14:37 - 14:39
    Like, is that even allowed?
  • 14:39 - 14:44
It’s one thing when Dead Cells includes
a picture of the Knight in their game, but
  • 14:44 - 14:48
to have your character actually talk to characters
    from another universe?
  • 14:48 - 14:53
What if JK Rowling decided to tweet that Harry
Potter did blow with Patrick Star?
  • 14:53 - 14:54
    You know what?
  • 14:54 - 14:57
Fuck the entire notion of fiction.
  • 14:57 - 15:02
From now on I’m sticking to real stuff like
true crime podcasts and professional wrestling.
  • 15:02 - 15:07
But of course, there is one other explanation
for Mister Mushroom’s additional lines of
  • 15:07 - 15:08
    dialogue.
  • 15:08 - 15:13
Perhaps Mister Mushroom is reaching forward
through time to talk to characters from games
  • 15:13 - 15:16
Team Cherry hasn’t even made yet.
  • 15:16 - 15:21
So in this case, it would literally be impossible
to know what Mister Mushroom is talking about,
  • 15:21 - 15:24
because these games don’t exist yet.
  • 15:24 - 15:30
Of course there is Silksong, which could theoretically
line up with either conversation five or seven
  • 15:30 - 15:34
since they reference things like hunting,
    gathering and tools.
  • 15:34 - 15:38
Aside from that, we are aware of one other
game Team Cherry might be working on.
  • 15:38 - 15:42
Another Hollow Knight YouTuber known as Relyea
made a video discussing the discovery of a
  • 15:42 - 15:48
trademark filed by Team Cherry for the phrase
    “Fearless Fox”.
  • 15:48 - 15:54
And after doing a bit of sleuthing myself,
I discovered that foxes actually have noses.
  • 15:54 - 15:57
So this could be a reference to conversation
    two.
  • 15:57 - 16:00
But that’s where our leads drop dead.
  • 16:00 - 16:04
Maybe Team Cherry will go back and make “Castlemania
    III”, or “War of S.P.O.R.E.
  • 16:04 - 16:09
II” or maybe they’ll finally make “Ultra
    Dangerous Guys 64”.
  • 16:09 - 16:13
So I guess I’ll have to make a follow up
video to this in 30 years once Team Cherry
  • 16:13 - 16:16
has made two or three more games.
  • 16:16 - 16:19
And so this video comes to an end.
  • 16:19 - 16:23
Mister Mushroom is definitely supposed to
be some kind of Easter Egg character that
  • 16:23 - 16:27
makes references to other video games, and
in doing so, proves that Hollow Knight is
  • 16:27 - 16:29
a part of some kind of multiverse.
  • 16:29 - 16:34
And who knows, maybe the Knight will be able
to travel to different parts of the multiverse.
  • 16:34 - 16:39
Maybe it will make a cameo in Fearless Fox,
or some other Team Cherry game.
  • 16:39 - 16:43
Maybe it will even help the Avenger’s by
    climbing inside Thanos’ asshole.
