Interview With a Psychopath - MAY BE DISTURBING
-
0:01 - 0:04Psychopathic offenders may be
rapists, child molesters, -
0:04 - 0:07sadists, and or any type of sex
offender. -
0:07 - 0:10They may not even be sex
offenders but engage in -
0:10 - 0:14other forms of criminal
or exploitive behavior instead. -
0:14 - 0:18The hallmark of psychopathy is
that the person doesn't have -
0:18 - 0:20a problem in one area,
-
0:20 - 0:25such as sex, but has a pervasive
lack of responsibility as -
0:25 - 0:30well as a lack of attachment to other people.
-
0:30 - 0:34In this next section,
Robert describes behavior -
0:34 - 0:38that puts him in the category of
power and controlled rapist but -
0:38 - 0:43doesn't necessarily tell us his problems are pervasive and
-
0:43 - 0:45that he has no capacity for attachment.
-
0:45 - 0:47That will come later.
-
0:47 - 0:49Yeah, it was power and control.
-
0:49 - 0:54I was grooming her from the
age of... -
0:54 - 0:58It started about the age of
one. -
0:58 - 1:02When I was the punisher.
I was the... -
1:02 - 1:05I was the one who decided
punishment over the children. -
1:05 - 1:07I was the one who spanked the
children. -
1:07 - 1:11I was the one who punished the
children. -
1:11 - 1:14And if I seen the children
doing anything wrong, -
1:14 - 1:17even bickering and arguing
amongst themselves, -
1:17 - 1:22I would whip them and tell them,
you know, just, just kids playing... -
1:22 - 1:27I would tell myself, well,
she's not going to be like that. -
1:27 - 1:36She is going to be the
perfect mate, -
1:36 - 1:37and I told myself that.
-
1:37 - 1:39And I didn't molest her
then. -
1:39 - 1:41(woman) The perfect mate?
The perfect mate. -
1:41 - 1:49I was grooming her to fit
me. To fit me. -
1:49 - 1:50(woman) At what age?
-
1:50 - 1:53I started at about a year.
-
1:53 - 1:54I started grooming her and
whooping her and telling -
1:54 - 1:56her this...
-
1:56 - 1:57To do this, not do that.
-
1:57 - 2:01Then I molested her at 18 months
old. -
2:01 - 2:09And I thought to myself, I said,
well, this is going to be easy. -
2:10 - 2:11This is going to be easy.
-
2:11 - 2:15I'm going to have my own
child, -
2:15 - 2:18my own step-daughter, which is
really not blood related to me. -
2:18 - 2:20And I'm telling myself these
things. -
2:20 - 2:21It's not blood related to me.
-
2:21 - 2:26When she grows up to be 14, 15
years old, -
2:26 - 2:34I will have the perfect sexual
mate for sexual purposes. -
2:35 - 2:37Anything else didn't matter.
-
2:37 - 2:38It was sex.
That was it. -
2:38 - 2:40I didn't care about...
-
2:40 - 2:42Really, honestly, I didn't love
the child. -
2:44 - 2:50I wanted the child for my own
purposes. -
2:50 - 2:52I was, I was the one potty
training her. -
2:52 - 2:54Okay?
-
2:54 - 2:56My wife let me potty train her.
-
2:56 - 2:58I potty trained her.
-
2:58 - 3:03And at first when I was potty
training her, -
3:03 - 3:04I gave her a break.
-
3:04 - 3:06Every now and then she could use
the bathroom in her pants, -
3:06 - 3:12but I was setting her on that
stool for sometimes hours at a time, -
3:12 - 3:14telling her to use the bathroom there.
-
3:14 - 3:15She got started doing it.
-
3:15 - 3:17She started using the
potty, -
3:17 - 3:19and then all of a sudden she would...
-
3:19 - 3:22I had been doing this for about
three, four months, -
3:22 - 3:26and then all of a sudden she
would use the bathroom in her pants, -
3:26 - 3:27and I would tear her hide up.
-
3:27 - 3:32I would actually put bruises on
her butt by spanking her -
3:32 - 3:34by using the bathroom in her
pants. -
3:34 - 3:37How did you get a little kid to
sit on the potty for hours? -
3:37 - 3:39That's an awful long time.
-
3:39 - 3:40Yell and scream.
-
3:40 - 3:42Tell her you're going to
use that potty, -
3:42 - 3:45and you don't get off that potty
until you use that potty. -
3:45 - 3:47Have you used the potty yet?
-
3:47 - 3:48(woman) No.
-
3:48 - 3:51You're going to sit there
until you use it. -
3:51 - 3:56And, and as I look back, I was
done that way, -
3:56 - 3:58the same way she was done.
-
4:00 - 4:02(woman) How do you justify
it in your head? -
4:02 - 4:03How do I justify it in
my head? -
4:03 - 4:05She's going to do what I
want her to do, -
4:05 - 4:06and that's it.
-
4:06 - 4:07She's going to use the bathroom.
-
4:07 - 4:10She's going to...
-
4:10 - 4:19Let's say that I told her that
daddy loves her. -
4:19 - 4:22And daddy's going to take care
of her, -
4:22 - 4:25and daddy's going to give her
anything she wants as long as -
4:25 - 4:26she does what daddy tells her.
-
4:26 - 4:34I got married at 19, and I kind
of like refrained or tried to -
4:34 - 4:39refrain from sexually acting out
with any other ladies besides her, -
4:39 - 4:42because I knew that AIDS was coming out,
-
4:42 - 4:45and I knew that diseases were
very frequent. -
4:45 - 4:48And I started thinking to
myself that if I stick -
4:48 - 4:53with this one girl and
groom her, or one woman, -
4:53 - 4:57I would groom her and get her to
do what I wanted her to do. -
4:57 - 4:58And eventually she did.
-
4:58 - 5:00She done what I asked her to
do. -
5:00 - 5:01It was no problem.
-
5:01 - 5:04It was a little at a time, and I
done it. -
5:04 - 5:06And I manipulated her and
coerced her. -
5:06 - 5:10Manipulation, coercion, violent
behaviors, striking her, -
5:12 - 5:16ah, ah, get her so drunk she'd
pass out, -
5:16 - 5:18and I'd do what I want to
with her. -
5:18 - 5:22I'd force myself upon her
when she was passed out -
5:22 - 5:23and did what I pleased.
-
5:23 - 5:29And my sexual behavior got real,
real out of whack. -
5:33 - 5:35Yeah, I made her force objects
into her vagina. -
5:35 - 5:49I made her, forced her into
watching pornographic material -
5:49 - 5:55and stating that I wanted to do
that certain thing to her. -
5:55 - 6:02I wanted to, I wanted to have
sex with her constantly. -
6:02 - 6:05This was every day, every
day three or four times... -
6:05 - 6:10I wanted it as many times
in a day as I could get it. -
6:10 - 6:14And I have got it up to
six times in one day, -
6:14 - 6:16and still, still I did not have
enough. -
6:16 - 6:17I wanted more.
-
6:17 - 6:19It was like a fix.
-
6:19 - 6:21I wanted it, and I did
anything I could to get it. -
6:21 - 6:24(woman) And how many times..total?
-
6:24 - 6:30I have a total of 24 now.
-
6:30 - 6:33And I'm looking to see if I have
any more. -
6:33 - 6:36(woman) And were these...
-
6:36 - 6:38You said these were all kids
except two? -
6:39 - 6:42No, yeah, well, they were
under the age of 18. -
6:42 - 6:48Most of my victims were the age
of 11 to 16. -
6:48 - 6:50(woman) And how did you get control
of them? -
6:50 - 6:52Was it through force and
control... -
6:52 - 6:53It was manipulate...
-
6:53 - 6:55No, it wasn't violence.
-
6:55 - 6:57It was more like manipulation.
-
6:57 - 6:58It was coercion.
-
6:58 - 7:02It was like I'll buy you this.
-
7:02 - 7:04I'll give you that, you know.
-
7:04 - 7:07And treating them like a
person, -
7:07 - 7:11but they were just objects.
-
7:11 - 7:12They were just objects.
-
7:12 - 7:20I was doing anything in my power
to get them to give sex up, -
7:20 - 7:21to give it up.
-
7:21 - 7:22And that's what I used to tell
them. -
7:22 - 7:24I said give it up, you know.
-
7:24 - 7:31After I would have done,
say groomed them up, and -
7:31 - 7:35then I would, and they would
comply. -
7:35 - 7:38I would use, I would buy
them beer, get them drunk, -
7:38 - 7:44get them high, get them
any way that I could -
7:44 - 7:47manipulate a woman or a
girl, -
7:47 - 7:50a child into having sex, I would do it.
-
7:50 - 7:55(woman) In this section, you will see
the lack of attachment to anyone -
7:55 - 8:00that suggests Robert is not only
a power and control sex offender, -
8:00 - 8:02he is quite psychopathic as well.
-
8:02 - 8:05The best way to fool people is
to have them. -
8:05 - 8:08Is to ask what they want, ask
what they need. -
8:08 - 8:10Do they need any help doing
anything? -
8:10 - 8:11Do they...
-
8:11 - 8:14Do they need any money?
-
8:14 - 8:16Or do they need their car fixed?
-
8:16 - 8:17Do they need the grass cut?
-
8:17 - 8:20Do they need their children
looked out for? -
8:20 - 8:24Do they need a job?
-
8:24 - 8:29Do they need anything, anything
to get them to think that -
8:29 - 8:33I am a decent person and want to
help, -
8:33 - 8:35trust me.
-
8:35 - 8:38I will help.
-
8:38 - 8:44And, overall, that was a flat
out lie. -
8:44 - 8:47(woman) What do you think makes people
so trusting? -
8:47 - 8:49What do you mean?
-
8:49 - 8:50As far as trusting...
-
8:50 - 8:51(woman) Trusting you.
-
8:51 - 8:52Trusting me?
-
8:52 - 8:55Because I...
-
8:55 - 8:59To trust me, well, I thought
that I could be trusted to -
8:59 - 9:03a certain extent.
-
9:03 - 9:10And, and, but behind, behind
their back, you -
9:10 - 9:12know, I would take things
from them, -
9:12 - 9:16steal from them, scope out
things that I could steal. -
9:16 - 9:24Just see what I could get out of
somebody. -
9:24 - 9:27Just get what I wanted.
-
9:27 - 9:28That's what I wanted.
-
9:28 - 9:31And I see something I want, to
get somebody to trust me. -
9:31 - 9:34Like say if was to go over
and cut this person's grass, -
9:34 - 9:37fix his car, loan him some
money, -
9:37 - 9:40and then he, and I see
something I want. -
9:40 - 9:44Like he's got a nice
stereo, then, I would set it up. -
9:44 - 9:47I would say, hey, he's not
home at such and such a time. -
9:47 - 9:51That'd be the perfect time
to go get me a stereo. -
9:51 - 9:54So I would say, hey, he's gone.
-
9:54 - 9:57I know exactly how to get in
through the back way. -
9:57 - 9:59I'll even go into his house and
open a window so -
9:59 - 10:02I can come in here tomorrow and
steal his stereo. -
10:02 - 10:05I was looking out for
number one, for me. -
10:05 - 10:08I didn't have any empathy
for anybody else, -
10:08 - 10:12because it seemed to me that
nobody had any empathy for me. -
10:12 - 10:14I wasn't going to give any
empathy that didn't give -
10:14 - 10:16it to me.
-
10:16 - 10:17And that was it.
-
10:17 - 10:18That was bottom line.
-
10:18 - 10:19You don't...
-
10:19 - 10:23I didn't have people cry for me
or tell me, -
10:23 - 10:25ask me if I needed anything.
-
10:25 - 10:29Uh, then, you know, I wouldn't
use any empathy. -
10:29 - 10:30I would fake it.
-
10:30 - 10:32I would fake empathy.
-
10:32 - 10:34Like saying I know how you feel.
-
10:34 - 10:37I've been in that
situation before. -
10:37 - 10:39I've done that, and it didn't
turn out all that hot. -
10:39 - 10:43And I would fake it, but
there wasn't no empathy there. -
10:43 - 10:44That was just a show.
-
10:44 - 10:48That was just to tell, that was
just to get the person to say, -
10:48 - 10:52well, hey, he seems like he's
a pretty good fellow. -
10:52 - 10:56And that was manipulation
the whole way. -
10:56 - 11:01I'm aware how disturbing
this film is. -
11:01 - 11:05I made it because I've seen
children report acts -
11:05 - 11:09of sadistic abuse and not be
believed because the listener -
11:09 - 11:11refused to believe that such
things happen. -
11:11 - 11:18It's easier to deny malevolence
than it is to face it. -
11:18 - 11:21But we have no hope of
detecting and stopping -
11:21 - 11:26this kind of behavior if we
don't learn something about it. -
11:26 - 11:30I made this film in the
hopes that the next victim -
11:30 - 11:33won't report six or
seven times as ... -
11:33 - 11:37Gerald's victim did and still
not be believed.
