Care at the end of life | Laura Aresca | TEDxRiodelaPlata

  • 0:12 - 0:16
    I've been looking after people
in the last moments of their lives
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    for 23 years.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
And in these years I learned many things,
  • 0:22 - 0:25
some of which I would like
    to share with you today.
  • 0:26 - 0:32
I learned that working at the center
    of other people's pain
  • 0:32 - 0:36
doesn't make you a bitter or sad person.
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    Quite the opposite.
  • 0:39 - 0:43
    It teaches you to appreciate
    every moment of your existence,
  • 0:43 - 0:46
and to be grateful for all you have.
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    I learned that miracles exist.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
But maybe in a different way
  • 0:52 - 0:54
to what we'd like them to be.
  • 0:54 - 1:00
Like being able to see a miracle
    in an act of reconciliation,
  • 1:00 - 1:05
    forgiveness, love or transformation.
  • 1:06 - 1:11
    I learned that humor
    is a very powerful tool
  • 1:11 - 1:17
that allows you to make some space
in the middle of the solemnity,
  • 1:17 - 1:21
    insecurity and fear
  • 1:21 - 1:24
generated by the close presence of death.
  • 1:25 - 1:31
I learned that we doctors need to work
    harder on our omnipotence,
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    be more humble
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    and not feel frustrated
    or that we have failed
  • 1:37 - 1:41
when despite doing everything we can,
  • 1:41 - 1:43
the results are not what we expected.
  • 1:45 - 1:49
    I learned that when
we are going through difficult times,
  • 1:49 - 1:51
it is important to look around.
  • 1:51 - 1:56
There are many people who are suffering
  • 1:56 - 1:59
and in much more adverse conditions
    compared to ours.
  • 2:00 - 2:04
And that allows you to put
    your own problem in perspective.
  • 2:06 - 2:12
Finally, I learned and I keep learning,
that it's not just about healing.
  • 2:13 - 2:18
    Above all, it is about
    bringing relief and being there.
  • 2:19 - 2:24
    Cultivating love and compassion
    helps facing suffering.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
And they can be a legacy for the family.
  • 2:28 - 2:32
    Cultivating love and compassion
  • 2:32 - 2:37
can leave a path of transcendence
    for others to tread.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    (Applause)
