How can you deal with unemployment and political crisis?

[How can your teachings help societies
    with unemployment and political crisis?]
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    Dear Thay, dear sangha,
  • 0:31 - 0:34
It is a question that I think reflects
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    the interest of many Spaniards
    at this moment.
  • 0:39 - 0:45
    As you know, we have
an unemployment rate close to 25%,
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    and a huge political crisis.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
So, I would like to know how the teachings
  • 0:53 - 0:56
can help us, not only individually,
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    but as a society.
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    There are those of us
    who have lost our job,
  • 1:14 - 1:20
who have not much money to spend.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
They manage to live happily, also.
  • 1:29 - 1:33
    We know that
there are those who have a job,
  • 1:33 - 1:37
there are those who have enough money,
  • 1:39 - 1:44
    but they still suffer.
  • 1:47 - 1:52
    So, our happiness does not
depend entirely on having a job,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    or having enough money,
  • 1:56 - 2:01
    or even a political stability
    in the country.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    Because in any circumstance,
  • 2:06 - 2:10
    the practice of mindfulness
can help us to suffer less.
  • 2:12 - 2:18
And, we are able, also, to create
    moments of joy and happiness,
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    if we know how to.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    Because there are
    many conditions of happiness.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
    And job, money,
  • 2:33 - 2:38
    political stability
are only a few of them.
  • 2:42 - 2:48
    Practicing mindfulness, we can protect
    ourselves from despair, from anger,
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    from frustration.
  • 2:51 - 2:55
    First of all, we recognize
    that we are still luckier
  • 2:55 - 2:59
than many other people in the world.
  • 3:01 - 3:05
There are many people in many countries
  • 3:05 - 3:12
who spend less than one dollar a day.
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    They live in extreme poverty.
  • 3:25 - 3:30
    But, they still have
    moments of joy together.
  • 3:38 - 3:43
    And we have to observe
if the family is still together,
  • 3:44 - 3:47
if they can still talk to each other,
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    and discuss with each other
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    how to improve the situation,
  • 3:53 - 3:58
and then they don't suffer as much as
    those who have more money.
  • 3:59 - 4:03
So, mindfulness, as you have learned
    here in Plum Village,
  • 4:03 - 4:10
    helps us to recognize that
there are so many conditions of happiness
  • 4:11 - 4:13
available in the here and the now.
  • 4:15 - 4:21
Having a body, with no serious disease,
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    is already happiness.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    And mindfulness helps us
    to be aware of that,
  • 4:29 - 4:31
that is a condition of happiness.
  • 4:31 - 4:35
    Many people are rich,
but do not have a body like that.
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    So, recognizing
    these conditions of happiness
  • 4:39 - 4:43
can help us not to suffer too much,
  • 4:43 - 4:47
and brings joy and happiness to us.
  • 4:48 - 4:52
If you manage to live mindfully
  • 4:52 - 4:56
and retain your calm, your peace,
  • 4:57 - 5:01
your joy, you help the country
    to restart again.
  • 5:02 - 5:04
And, if you lose your hope,
  • 5:05 - 5:09
    if you lose your joy,
  • 5:09 - 5:14
if you are caught by your anger,
    your fear, your frustration,
  • 5:14 - 5:17
    you make the situation
    worse in your country,
  • 5:17 - 5:21
and your country will not have a chance
  • 5:21 - 5:25
to recover, to get a new start.
  • 5:26 - 5:28
So, we have to sit down and find out
  • 5:29 - 5:33
what kind of practice that can help us
  • 5:33 - 5:37
    keep the hope, keep compassion,
  • 5:39 - 5:43
    keep the joy of living,
  • 5:43 - 5:47
    so that we can
improve the situation day by day.
  • 5:49 - 5:52
    [connect,
    be inspired, be nourished]
