DIY Furry Clutch with Eyes | Make Thrift Buy #32

  • 0:04 - 0:07
Hello! Welcome back to another episode of
Make, Thrift, Buy – the show where you send
  • 0:07 - 0:11
in accessories or clothing that you’ve seen
on the internet, and then I try and recreate
  • 0:11 - 0:14
it, through a combination of crafting or thrifting
    or sometimes – both!
  • 0:14 - 0:19
Today’s challenge is this super cute fluffy
    purse/clutch thing, suggested by Anonymous.
  • 0:19 - 0:23
    Now I don’t know why Anonymous didn’t
want to leave their name, but you did direct
  • 0:23 - 0:27
me straight to the German Asos website so
I know that you are at least from Germany
  • 0:27 - 0:32
    or speak German! Detective skills.
Also ASOS is where the original purse can
  • 0:32 - 0:35
be found, but it seems to be perpetually out
    of stock.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
So I thought that I would try and recreate
    it for myself.
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    So, let’s begin!
  • 0:39 - 0:45
So – fluffy fabric. My old arch nemesis.
I bought this fake fur fabric for new, from
  • 0:45 - 0:48
spotlight, because I didn’t want to chance
another fluffy blue shorts incident by using
  • 0:48 - 0:52
    some unknown thrifted material.
But, it does appear that any fluffy fabric
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    just… goes everywhere .
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    DID YOU SEE THAT?!
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    Seriously?? Come on.
Before I've even started, I’ve pulled off
  • 0:59 - 1:01
enough fluff to make a small animal.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
ANYWAY – once I got over that, I started
actually thinking about the project. I decided
  • 1:04 - 1:08
that I wanted to make a clutch, rather than
a purse like the ASOS one. I also decided
  • 1:08 - 1:12
that I wanted both sides of the clutch to
be furry, unlike the ASOS purse where one
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    side is this leathery material.
  • 1:14 - 1:19
So, turning the fake fur over to the wrong
side, I drew out two identical rectangles
  • 1:19 - 1:21
with the dimensions 12 inches by 10 inches.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
Then I cut them out – and check it out,
my mum got me this rotary cutter for Christmas
  • 1:25 - 1:32
which OH MY GOD makes cutting things SO much
easier. LOOK. AT. THAT. So easy. Of course,
  • 1:32 - 1:36
scissors will work just fine if you don’t
    have a rotary cutter yourself.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
And there’s my two rectangles that will
make up the outer part of the clutch.
  • 1:39 - 1:44
Now, for the inner lining. I also cut out
2 identical-sized rectangles with some lining
  • 1:44 - 1:48
    fabric.
And these are the 4 pieces that I will need.
  • 1:48 - 1:52
The next thing that I did was to sew on some
googly eyes. I found these googly eyes that
  • 1:52 - 1:56
have this plastic loop on the back so that
I can handsew them on instead of just gluing
  • 1:56 - 2:00
them, which wouldn’t be as durable.
So, on one piece of outer fabric, I figure
  • 2:00 - 2:04
out where I want the eyes to go and then I
sew them on by hand, using a needle and a
  • 2:04 - 2:08
thread. To sew them on I go up through the
back of the fabric, through the loop at the
  • 2:08 - 2:13
back of the googly eye and back down, and
then up and down a couple more times to secure
  • 2:13 - 2:19
the eye in place, and then I tie a couple
of knots in the back to make one big knot
  • 2:19 - 2:22
so that it’s really secure, and then cut
    off the excess thread.
  • 2:22 - 2:26
Then, I grabbed a zipper. And this zipper
is thrifted. The most important thing about
  • 2:26 - 2:30
this zipper, though, is that it needs to be
longer than the side of the clutch where you’re
  • 2:30 - 2:34
inserting it. So, my zipper needed to be longer
than 12 inches. It’s actually way longer
  • 2:34 - 2:38
than that, but that doesn’t matter because
I’ll be cutting it shorter later on.
  • 2:38 - 2:43
Now, to sew the clutch together, first I lay
down the lining fabric, then the zipper - right
  • 2:43 - 2:46
side up, and then the fake fur, right side
    DOWN.
  • 2:46 - 2:50
And I make sure that the top edges of all
    three are aligned.
  • 2:50 - 2:54
Then, I pin the fabrics and the zip to hold
them in place, and I’m going to sew across
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    here.
However, when I'm sewing I’m going to flip
  • 2:57 - 3:01
it over so that the foot of the sewing machine
will be gliding along the lining, rather than
  • 3:01 - 3:03
the rough underside of the fake fur.
  • 3:03 - 3:07
While sewing, I use a straight stitch and
a zipper foot. A zipper foot isn’t necessary
  • 3:07 - 3:12
in this step, but it will make life easier!
Then, going really slowly so my sewing machine
  • 3:12 - 3:15
doesn’t freak out, I sew all three layers
    together.
  • 3:15 - 3:19
When I’m done with that, I flip everything
over so that the right side - the fluffy side
  • 3:19 - 3:24
    - of the outer fabric is facing outwards.
I also temporarily pin the lining to the outer
  • 3:24 - 3:26
fabric just to keep them out of the way in
    the next step.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
And the next step is to: repeat the same thing
    again!
  • 3:29 - 3:34
I lay down the lining fabric, then the zipper
(with everything attached to it) right side
  • 3:34 - 3:40
up, and the last fake fur piece right side
DOWN. I make sure that they're all lined up
  • 3:40 - 3:45
at the top edge, and then I pin them together,
and sew across the top like this, but along
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    the lining side again.
  • 3:51 - 3:55
At this point, the clutch is looking like
    this!
  • 3:55 - 4:00
Then I half unzip the zipper, and then I fold
the fabrics over so that the two lining pieces
  • 4:00 - 4:06
are on one side, and the two fake fur pieces
are on the other side, both right-sides together.
  • 4:06 - 4:12
Then, I pin the zipper so that it’s folded
towards the fake fur pieces, cut off the excess
  • 4:12 - 4:19
zipper pieces, and THEN, I sew using a straight
stitch around most of the outsides like THIS.
  • 4:19 - 4:23
Make sure that you take extra care while sewing
over the zipper. When I got up to the zip,
  • 4:23 - 4:27
I took my foot off the pedal and I used the
handwheel instead, to make sure that my needle
  • 4:27 - 4:31
wouldn’t hit the zip and snap.
  • 4:31 - 4:34
Make sure you're leaving a gap in the lining
fabric - you don't want to sew it totally
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    closed at this point.
  • 4:36 - 4:40
When I had done that, I pulled everything
through the hole in the lining, and then
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    through the open zipper!
  • 4:44 - 4:47
I also pushed out the corners
of the outer fabric, and then I pulled the
  • 4:47 - 4:53
lining out one last time so that I could sew
    the gap closed, like this.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
And – that’s it you guys! I'm done!
  • 4:55 - 4:57
So - How Did I Gooooo?
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    [music plays]
  • 5:33 - 5:35
So can you make this for yourself?
    [scissors snipping sound effect]
  • 5:35 - 5:40
Yes you can! Now obviously you don't have
to make it as big and, like, clutch-sized
  • 5:40 - 5:44
as I did, you can make it smaller and more
purse-sized like the one on ASOS. All you
  • 5:44 - 5:48
have to do is adjust your measurements according
to how big you want it to be, just remembering
  • 5:48 - 5:52
to leave about an inch or so for seam allowance.
And, as worried as I was about the fluffy
  • 5:52 - 5:58
fabric going everywhere, once it's all sewed
together and there's no raw edges, the fluff
  • 5:58 - 6:02
actually stays on the bag, and it doesn't
go everywhere, so, that's a good thing! And
  • 6:02 - 6:07
it's super snuggly and nice and I really like
it. I also discovered that if you turn it
  • 6:07 - 6:11
upside down and unzip it, it looks like it
has a mouth! Which is another great thing
  • 6:11 - 6:16
about it. As always, if you attempt to make
this, or you try out any of my other tutorials,
  • 6:16 - 6:20
then please tag me on instagram with the hashtag
#diyannika, because I really love seeing what
  • 6:20 - 6:23
you guys come up with - it makes me really
happy! I hope you're all having a good day,
  • 6:23 - 6:25
and I'll see you all for my next video. Bye!
