WEBVTT 00:00:03.610 --> 00:00:06.990 Hello! Welcome back to another episode of Make, Thrift, Buy – the show where you send 00:00:06.990 --> 00:00:10.889 in accessories or clothing that you’ve seen on the internet, and then I try and recreate 00:00:10.889 --> 00:00:14.209 it, through a combination of crafting or thrifting or sometimes – both! 00:00:14.209 --> 00:00:18.900 Today’s challenge is this super cute fluffy purse/clutch thing, suggested by Anonymous. 00:00:18.900 --> 00:00:22.700 Now I don’t know why Anonymous didn’t want to leave their name, but you did direct 00:00:22.700 --> 00:00:27.300 me straight to the German Asos website so I know that you are at least from Germany 00:00:27.300 --> 00:00:32.140 or speak German! Detective skills. Also ASOS is where the original purse can 00:00:32.140 --> 00:00:34.960 be found, but it seems to be perpetually out of stock. 00:00:34.960 --> 00:00:37.650 So I thought that I would try and recreate it for myself. 00:00:37.650 --> 00:00:39.150 So, let’s begin! 00:00:39.150 --> 00:00:44.690 So – fluffy fabric. My old arch nemesis. I bought this fake fur fabric for new, from 00:00:44.690 --> 00:00:48.090 spotlight, because I didn’t want to chance another fluffy blue shorts incident by using 00:00:48.090 --> 00:00:52.460 some unknown thrifted material. But, it does appear that any fluffy fabric 00:00:52.460 --> 00:00:53.920 just… goes everywhere . 00:00:53.920 --> 00:00:55.920 DID YOU SEE THAT?! 00:00:55.920 --> 00:00:58.820 Seriously?? Come on. Before I've even started, I’ve pulled off 00:00:58.820 --> 00:01:00.690 enough fluff to make a small animal. 00:01:00.690 --> 00:01:04.379 ANYWAY – once I got over that, I started actually thinking about the project. I decided 00:01:04.379 --> 00:01:08.420 that I wanted to make a clutch, rather than a purse like the ASOS one. I also decided 00:01:08.420 --> 00:01:12.490 that I wanted both sides of the clutch to be furry, unlike the ASOS purse where one 00:01:12.490 --> 00:01:14.350 side is this leathery material. 00:01:14.350 --> 00:01:18.700 So, turning the fake fur over to the wrong side, I drew out two identical rectangles 00:01:18.700 --> 00:01:21.390 with the dimensions 12 inches by 10 inches. 00:01:21.390 --> 00:01:25.180 Then I cut them out – and check it out, my mum got me this rotary cutter for Christmas 00:01:25.180 --> 00:01:32.390 which OH MY GOD makes cutting things SO much easier. LOOK. AT. THAT. So easy. Of course, 00:01:32.390 --> 00:01:35.830 scissors will work just fine if you don’t have a rotary cutter yourself. 00:01:35.830 --> 00:01:39.090 And there’s my two rectangles that will make up the outer part of the clutch. 00:01:39.090 --> 00:01:43.729 Now, for the inner lining. I also cut out 2 identical-sized rectangles with some lining 00:01:43.729 --> 00:01:47.729 fabric. And these are the 4 pieces that I will need. 00:01:47.729 --> 00:01:51.700 The next thing that I did was to sew on some googly eyes. I found these googly eyes that 00:01:51.700 --> 00:01:55.710 have this plastic loop on the back so that I can handsew them on instead of just gluing 00:01:55.710 --> 00:01:59.840 them, which wouldn’t be as durable. So, on one piece of outer fabric, I figure 00:01:59.840 --> 00:02:04.250 out where I want the eyes to go and then I sew them on by hand, using a needle and a 00:02:04.250 --> 00:02:08.170 thread. To sew them on I go up through the back of the fabric, through the loop at the 00:02:08.170 --> 00:02:13.410 back of the googly eye and back down, and then up and down a couple more times to secure 00:02:13.410 --> 00:02:19.200 the eye in place, and then I tie a couple of knots in the back to make one big knot 00:02:19.200 --> 00:02:22.319 so that it’s really secure, and then cut off the excess thread. 00:02:22.319 --> 00:02:26.500 Then, I grabbed a zipper. And this zipper is thrifted. The most important thing about 00:02:26.500 --> 00:02:29.970 this zipper, though, is that it needs to be longer than the side of the clutch where you’re 00:02:29.970 --> 00:02:34.300 inserting it. So, my zipper needed to be longer than 12 inches. It’s actually way longer 00:02:34.300 --> 00:02:38.040 than that, but that doesn’t matter because I’ll be cutting it shorter later on. 00:02:38.040 --> 00:02:43.060 Now, to sew the clutch together, first I lay down the lining fabric, then the zipper - right 00:02:43.060 --> 00:02:46.150 side up, and then the fake fur, right side DOWN. 00:02:46.150 --> 00:02:49.500 And I make sure that the top edges of all three are aligned. 00:02:49.500 --> 00:02:54.489 Then, I pin the fabrics and the zip to hold them in place, and I’m going to sew across 00:02:54.489 --> 00:02:56.690 here. However, when I'm sewing I’m going to flip 00:02:56.690 --> 00:03:00.910 it over so that the foot of the sewing machine will be gliding along the lining, rather than 00:03:00.910 --> 00:03:03.099 the rough underside of the fake fur. 00:03:03.099 --> 00:03:07.349 While sewing, I use a straight stitch and a zipper foot. A zipper foot isn’t necessary 00:03:07.349 --> 00:03:12.400 in this step, but it will make life easier! Then, going really slowly so my sewing machine 00:03:12.400 --> 00:03:15.379 doesn’t freak out, I sew all three layers together. 00:03:15.379 --> 00:03:19.030 When I’m done with that, I flip everything over so that the right side - the fluffy side 00:03:19.030 --> 00:03:23.580 - of the outer fabric is facing outwards. I also temporarily pin the lining to the outer 00:03:23.580 --> 00:03:26.349 fabric just to keep them out of the way in the next step. 00:03:26.349 --> 00:03:29.159 And the next step is to: repeat the same thing again! 00:03:29.159 --> 00:03:34.180 I lay down the lining fabric, then the zipper (with everything attached to it) right side 00:03:34.180 --> 00:03:40.420 up, and the last fake fur piece right side DOWN. I make sure that they're all lined up 00:03:40.420 --> 00:03:45.260 at the top edge, and then I pin them together, and sew across the top like this, but along 00:03:45.260 --> 00:03:46.700 the lining side again. 00:03:51.040 --> 00:03:55.220 At this point, the clutch is looking like this! 00:03:55.220 --> 00:04:00.019 Then I half unzip the zipper, and then I fold the fabrics over so that the two lining pieces 00:04:00.019 --> 00:04:05.690 are on one side, and the two fake fur pieces are on the other side, both right-sides together. 00:04:05.690 --> 00:04:11.680 Then, I pin the zipper so that it’s folded towards the fake fur pieces, cut off the excess 00:04:11.680 --> 00:04:18.609 zipper pieces, and THEN, I sew using a straight stitch around most of the outsides like THIS. 00:04:18.609 --> 00:04:22.689 Make sure that you take extra care while sewing over the zipper. When I got up to the zip, 00:04:22.689 --> 00:04:27.330 I took my foot off the pedal and I used the handwheel instead, to make sure that my needle 00:04:27.330 --> 00:04:30.839 wouldn’t hit the zip and snap. 00:04:30.839 --> 00:04:34.360 Make sure you're leaving a gap in the lining fabric - you don't want to sew it totally 00:04:34.360 --> 00:04:35.849 closed at this point. 00:04:35.849 --> 00:04:39.550 When I had done that, I pulled everything through the hole in the lining, and then 00:04:39.550 --> 00:04:41.550 through the open zipper! 00:04:43.700 --> 00:04:46.920 I also pushed out the corners of the outer fabric, and then I pulled the 00:04:46.930 --> 00:04:52.809 lining out one last time so that I could sew the gap closed, like this. 00:04:52.809 --> 00:04:55.080 And – that’s it you guys! I'm done! 00:04:55.080 --> 00:04:56.900 So - How Did I Gooooo? 00:04:58.800 --> 00:05:02.500 [music plays] 00:05:32.599 --> 00:05:35.430 So can you make this for yourself? [scissors snipping sound effect] 00:05:35.430 --> 00:05:39.669 Yes you can! Now obviously you don't have to make it as big and, like, clutch-sized 00:05:39.669 --> 00:05:44.099 as I did, you can make it smaller and more purse-sized like the one on ASOS. All you 00:05:44.099 --> 00:05:47.509 have to do is adjust your measurements according to how big you want it to be, just remembering 00:05:47.509 --> 00:05:51.889 to leave about an inch or so for seam allowance. And, as worried as I was about the fluffy 00:05:51.889 --> 00:05:57.509 fabric going everywhere, once it's all sewed together and there's no raw edges, the fluff 00:05:57.509 --> 00:06:02.479 actually stays on the bag, and it doesn't go everywhere, so, that's a good thing! And 00:06:02.479 --> 00:06:06.669 it's super snuggly and nice and I really like it. I also discovered that if you turn it 00:06:06.669 --> 00:06:10.849 upside down and unzip it, it looks like it has a mouth! Which is another great thing 00:06:10.849 --> 00:06:15.740 about it. As always, if you attempt to make this, or you try out any of my other tutorials, 00:06:15.740 --> 00:06:19.860 then please tag me on instagram with the hashtag #diyannika, because I really love seeing what 00:06:19.860 --> 00:06:22.939 you guys come up with - it makes me really happy! I hope you're all having a good day, 00:06:22.939 --> 00:06:25.009 and I'll see you all for my next video. Bye!
