3 steps to stop remote work burnout
-
0:00 - 0:03You might think that working remotely
is an introvert's dream: -
0:03 - 0:06you're in your own home
hidden behind a computer, -
0:07 - 0:08possibly in your pajamas.
-
0:08 - 0:09But the truth is,
-
0:09 - 0:13for many introverts,
remote work is kind of a nightmare. -
0:14 - 0:15[TED: The Way We Work]
-
0:16 - 0:18[Made possible
with the support of Dropbox] -
0:18 - 0:21Now that the pandemic
has chased many of us out of our offices, -
0:21 - 0:24we're chafing under the new
remote rules of work: -
0:24 - 0:26too much screen time;
-
0:26 - 0:29a lack of boundaries
between work and home; -
0:29 - 0:30endless video calls.
-
0:30 - 0:33The same things that make remote work
difficult for introverts -
0:33 - 0:35make it difficult for everyone.
-
0:35 - 0:39Far and away, the worst part
of remote work is video calls. -
0:39 - 0:41Being on camera is a performance.
-
0:42 - 0:46Thoughtless scheduling can mean
you're basically onstage performing -
0:46 - 0:47for eight hours a day.
-
0:47 - 0:51There are none of the nuanced cues
that help you read a room. -
0:51 - 0:54Staring at disembodied heads on a screen
-
0:54 - 0:58offers only a pale imitation
of real human connection. -
0:58 - 1:01Social anxiety only makes this worse.
-
1:01 - 1:04When you have a camera in your face,
-
1:04 - 1:06that can really trigger
your social anxiety. -
1:06 - 1:08It takes energy to be on.
-
1:08 - 1:13So the key to managing remote work
is to protect your energy. -
1:13 - 1:16First, pay attention
to ritual and routine. -
1:16 - 1:18As much as we hated our commutes,
-
1:18 - 1:21they were a ritual that created
a boundary between work and home. -
1:21 - 1:22And we need that.
-
1:23 - 1:26For many of us, those little breaks
that we would build in to the work day -- -
1:26 - 1:30going to get a cup of coffee
or a chat with a coworker -- -
1:30 - 1:31those are gone, too.
-
1:31 - 1:34For me, those rituals are when
I gather my energy, -
1:34 - 1:36assume my work character
-
1:36 - 1:38and get into the right headspace
-
1:38 - 1:39to dive in.
-
1:39 - 1:42So how can you recreate those breaks
and boundaries at home? -
1:42 - 1:44The key is to be intentional.
-
1:44 - 1:46It could be music or lighting,
-
1:46 - 1:48a pep talk with a friend.
-
1:48 - 1:51You could take a walk around the block
at a certain time of day -
1:51 - 1:54or even a breathing or stretching routine
-
1:54 - 1:55before you sit --
-
1:55 - 1:58whatever it takes for you
to delineate the transition -
1:58 - 2:00between work and home.
-
2:01 - 2:05Second, we need to manage
our pace, place and space. -
2:05 - 2:08You can think of pacing
as managing the interactions -
2:08 - 2:10that tax your energy
-
2:10 - 2:11versus those that recharge you.
-
2:11 - 2:14You could schedule fewer videoconferences,
-
2:14 - 2:16because remember, those are performances.
-
2:16 - 2:20You could schedule downtime
or recharge time after performances. -
2:20 - 2:22Oprah does this,
-
2:22 - 2:25as do many introverted
performers and CEOs. -
2:25 - 2:27You could consider the time of day.
-
2:27 - 2:31Think about when you can
typically summon the energy to be on -
2:31 - 2:33and save other times for quiet work.
-
2:33 - 2:36For place, use your workspace
-
2:36 - 2:38to help you enforce good boundaries.
-
2:38 - 2:41Even if your desk is in your kitchen,
-
2:41 - 2:44make it feel like a workplace.
-
2:44 - 2:48For space, build in
some alone time every day. -
2:48 - 2:50And this includes
time away from your kids. -
2:50 - 2:52It's really key to avoiding burnout.
-
2:52 - 2:54Finally, if you're a manager,
-
2:54 - 2:56you have a special role to play
-
2:56 - 3:00to help employees protect
their pace, place and space. -
3:00 - 3:02Manage the room during video calls.
-
3:02 - 3:06Even remotely, chatty extroverts
tend to dominate. -
3:06 - 3:08To create a space
where everyone can be heard, -
3:08 - 3:10structure agendas,
-
3:10 - 3:12assign presentation rules
-
3:12 - 3:14and minimize brainstorming.
-
3:14 - 3:17Brainstorming can trigger social anxiety,
-
3:17 - 3:19and it can freeze up introverts.
-
3:19 - 3:23Instead, create a shared space
where people can write their ideas -
3:23 - 3:25before a brainstorming session.
-
3:25 - 3:27Favor audio over video calls.
-
3:27 - 3:32Research shows that we actually
communicate more emotion and nuance -
3:32 - 3:33via audio alone.
-
3:33 - 3:35Try asynchronous communication
-
3:35 - 3:38for more complicated
or provocative one-on-ones. -
3:38 - 3:41You can steal this idea
from author Robert Glazer: -
3:41 - 3:46record a voice memo or video on your phone
explaining your perspective -
3:46 - 3:47and send it to a colleague.
-
3:47 - 3:51And that way, they can respond
and react in their own time. -
3:51 - 3:53Along with a lot of challenges now,
-
3:53 - 3:55we have an opportunity.
-
3:55 - 3:57Remote work is here to stay,
-
3:57 - 4:00so don't just transfer old habits
and old company culture -
4:00 - 4:02to remote work.
-
4:02 - 4:03Build something better.
-
4:03 - 4:05To get started,
-
4:05 - 4:08ask the introverts in your office
what their ideal day looks like -
4:08 - 4:10and take your cue from there.
