Stress at school | Carley Rogers | TEDxYouth@ParkCity

  • 0:05 - 0:08
There are many days I hear my alarm
    waking me up for school,
  • 0:08 - 0:10
and I dread getting out of bed.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
I have more than I need.
  • 0:12 - 0:16
I'm fed every day, I live
in a wonderful house in a beautiful city,
  • 0:16 - 0:19
and I attend a good school,
yet I still don't want to go.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
It is so easy to find
    the negatives in school.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    Things like stress
and lack of interest in my classes
  • 0:25 - 0:28
are just some of the negatives
    that overpower the good.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
Yet, at the perspective of another,
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    their opinion
    would be completely different.
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    Imagine a 14-year-old girl
    living in an African country:
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    her name is Adisa,
  • 0:38 - 0:42
and she is part of a family of six
    living in a one-room house.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    She would give anything
to have the opportunity to learn,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
but her family can't afford it.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
To her, school would not be
the terrible monster that I see.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    She would find the positives.
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    She would see school
  • 0:54 - 0:58
as a way to make new friends
and learn about the world around her.
  • 0:58 - 1:04
    Thinking about Adisa and others
in her situation made me feel very guilty.
  • 1:04 - 1:08
Here I am, complaining about my life
when I have everything I need and more.
  • 1:08 - 1:12
What she would only dream of
    living a life like mine?
  • 1:12 - 1:17
I've been told to be successful in life
I have to succeed in school.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
I've been told to get into a good college
I have to make good grades
  • 1:20 - 1:24
    and participate in
as many school activities as possible.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
The way I see it, putting
    that much pressure on yourself
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    to make good grades
and participate in every school activity
  • 1:30 - 1:32
is not the best high school experience.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    For me, this just adds
    to the pressure and anxiety
  • 1:35 - 1:37
making it more difficult to learn.
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    I struggle with stress
  • 1:39 - 1:45
    and the pressure of having
the best grades is always present.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    I was thinking about
what the number 4.0 actually means to me,
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    and I stumbled to answer.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    What does it mean?
  • 1:52 - 1:56
It has to mean something if I'm putting
myself through so much to get it.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
I am one who strives to do my best,
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    and the pressure and anxiety
    is making me question why.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    Why am I putting
    so much pressure on myself
  • 2:05 - 2:08
that I struggle to go to school?
  • 2:08 - 2:12
    Stress about the workload pressure
on making good grades? It's a lot.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
Even for me who has never found school
    to be very difficult.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
I don't find myself struggling very often,
  • 2:17 - 2:22
    but that doesn't make it any easier;
if anything, it makes it more difficult.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
Many don't see how that could be the case.
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    I've had several conversations
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    where someone will say
    something along the lines
  • 2:28 - 2:32
of, "if you are so good at school,
    why don't you like it?"
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    This question and the many
    different variations I've heard
  • 2:35 - 2:36
    continue to confuse me.
  • 2:36 - 2:39
    How does working hard
    to perform well at school
  • 2:39 - 2:41
take away the stress or dislike?
  • 2:41 - 2:46
    I know from personal experience:
it just adds to the stress and dislike.
  • 2:46 - 2:49
    I put myself through this
    so I'll have more opportunities
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    to live a successful life,
and I'm trying to understand why.
  • 2:53 - 2:57
When I hear my alarm waking me up
for school, I get ready for an entire day.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
    I'm walking into day
for those seven hours of learning.
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    Yikes.
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    Seven hours of boredom,
    frustration, and judgment.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    I've many classes
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    that take so much energy
    to keep from falling sleep.
  • 3:09 - 3:12
    People that feel
that, because it's a group project,
  • 3:12 - 3:14
they don't have to do any of the work.
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    Presentations that make me
    shake with nervousness.
  • 3:17 - 3:21
Peers that feel the need to make others
    feel bad about themselves.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
Add all this to the stress,
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    and you're looking
    at the definition of misery.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    I look at school
and see a bubble of negativity,
  • 3:28 - 3:30
yet, at the perspective of another,
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    their opinion
    will be completely different.
  • 3:32 - 3:38
    Adisa would go to school
and be over the moon excited.
  • 3:38 - 3:42
    She would want to experience
all the different classes and subjects.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
She wouldn't be so focused on the grades,
  • 3:44 - 3:47
because she'll be so much more interested
    in the actual learning.
  • 3:48 - 3:49
She would try her best to succeed
  • 3:49 - 3:53
    and only see the stress
as a small side effect of school.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    I try to have
    this perspective about school,
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    especially because I'm
so incredible lucky to have all that I do.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
But it is a constant struggle.
  • 4:00 - 4:03
I tell myself to think about school
    in the perspective of Adisa,
  • 4:04 - 4:05
who'd give anything to take my place.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    I find the positives
because that's what she would do.
  • 4:08 - 4:10
She would work with the situation
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    even if she doesn't like
    everything about it.
  • 4:12 - 4:16
And I feel this should be easier to do
than it actually is, but it's not.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
I challenge you to think about your life
  • 4:19 - 4:23
    from the perspective of someone
who'd give anything to take your place.
  • 4:23 - 4:27
    Find the positives
and encourage others to do the same.
  • 4:27 - 4:30
    Know that it's only
    a portion of your life,
  • 4:30 - 4:32
and it's not the worst thing
    you could be doing.
  • 4:32 - 4:36
I know it can be hard; trust me,
    I struggle with it everyday.
  • 4:36 - 4:37
    Just remember:
  • 4:37 - 4:40
    don't take anything for granted
and embrace the stuff you don't like
  • 4:40 - 4:44
    because there's someone out there
who'd give anything to take your place.
  • 4:44 - 4:45
    (Applause)
