Stress at school | Carley Rogers | TEDxYouth@ParkCity
-
0:05 - 0:08There are many days I hear my alarm
waking me up for school, -
0:08 - 0:10and I dread getting out of bed.
-
0:10 - 0:12I have more than I need.
-
0:12 - 0:16I'm fed every day, I live
in a wonderful house in a beautiful city, -
0:16 - 0:19and I attend a good school,
yet I still don't want to go. -
0:19 - 0:22It is so easy to find
the negatives in school. -
0:22 - 0:25Things like stress
and lack of interest in my classes -
0:25 - 0:28are just some of the negatives
that overpower the good. -
0:28 - 0:30Yet, at the perspective of another,
-
0:30 - 0:32their opinion
would be completely different. -
0:32 - 0:36Imagine a 14-year-old girl
living in an African country: -
0:36 - 0:38her name is Adisa,
-
0:38 - 0:42and she is part of a family of six
living in a one-room house. -
0:42 - 0:45She would give anything
to have the opportunity to learn, -
0:45 - 0:47but her family can't afford it.
-
0:47 - 0:51To her, school would not be
the terrible monster that I see. -
0:51 - 0:53She would find the positives.
-
0:53 - 0:54She would see school
-
0:54 - 0:58as a way to make new friends
and learn about the world around her. -
0:58 - 1:04Thinking about Adisa and others
in her situation made me feel very guilty. -
1:04 - 1:08Here I am, complaining about my life
when I have everything I need and more. -
1:08 - 1:12What she would only dream of
living a life like mine? -
1:12 - 1:17I've been told to be successful in life
I have to succeed in school. -
1:17 - 1:20I've been told to get into a good college
I have to make good grades -
1:20 - 1:24and participate in
as many school activities as possible. -
1:24 - 1:27The way I see it, putting
that much pressure on yourself -
1:27 - 1:30to make good grades
and participate in every school activity -
1:30 - 1:32is not the best high school experience.
-
1:32 - 1:35For me, this just adds
to the pressure and anxiety -
1:35 - 1:37making it more difficult to learn.
-
1:38 - 1:39I struggle with stress
-
1:39 - 1:45and the pressure of having
the best grades is always present. -
1:45 - 1:48I was thinking about
what the number 4.0 actually means to me, -
1:48 - 1:50and I stumbled to answer.
-
1:50 - 1:52What does it mean?
-
1:52 - 1:56It has to mean something if I'm putting
myself through so much to get it. -
1:57 - 2:00I am one who strives to do my best,
-
2:00 - 2:03and the pressure and anxiety
is making me question why. -
2:03 - 2:05Why am I putting
so much pressure on myself -
2:05 - 2:08that I struggle to go to school?
-
2:08 - 2:12Stress about the workload pressure
on making good grades? It's a lot. -
2:12 - 2:15Even for me who has never found school
to be very difficult. -
2:15 - 2:17I don't find myself struggling very often,
-
2:17 - 2:22but that doesn't make it any easier;
if anything, it makes it more difficult. -
2:22 - 2:24Many don't see how that could be the case.
-
2:24 - 2:25I've had several conversations
-
2:25 - 2:28where someone will say
something along the lines -
2:28 - 2:32of, "if you are so good at school,
why don't you like it?" -
2:32 - 2:35This question and the many
different variations I've heard -
2:35 - 2:36continue to confuse me.
-
2:36 - 2:39How does working hard
to perform well at school -
2:39 - 2:41take away the stress or dislike?
-
2:41 - 2:46I know from personal experience:
it just adds to the stress and dislike. -
2:46 - 2:49I put myself through this
so I'll have more opportunities -
2:49 - 2:52to live a successful life,
and I'm trying to understand why. -
2:53 - 2:57When I hear my alarm waking me up
for school, I get ready for an entire day. -
2:57 - 3:00I'm walking into day
for those seven hours of learning. -
3:00 - 3:01Yikes.
-
3:01 - 3:04Seven hours of boredom,
frustration, and judgment. -
3:04 - 3:06I've many classes
-
3:06 - 3:09that take so much energy
to keep from falling sleep. -
3:09 - 3:12People that feel
that, because it's a group project, -
3:12 - 3:14they don't have to do any of the work.
-
3:14 - 3:17Presentations that make me
shake with nervousness. -
3:17 - 3:21Peers that feel the need to make others
feel bad about themselves. -
3:21 - 3:23Add all this to the stress,
-
3:23 - 3:26and you're looking
at the definition of misery. -
3:26 - 3:28I look at school
and see a bubble of negativity, -
3:28 - 3:30yet, at the perspective of another,
-
3:30 - 3:32their opinion
will be completely different. -
3:32 - 3:38Adisa would go to school
and be over the moon excited. -
3:38 - 3:42She would want to experience
all the different classes and subjects. -
3:42 - 3:44She wouldn't be so focused on the grades,
-
3:44 - 3:47because she'll be so much more interested
in the actual learning. -
3:48 - 3:49She would try her best to succeed
-
3:49 - 3:53and only see the stress
as a small side effect of school. -
3:53 - 3:55I try to have
this perspective about school, -
3:55 - 3:58especially because I'm
so incredible lucky to have all that I do. -
3:58 - 4:00But it is a constant struggle.
-
4:00 - 4:03I tell myself to think about school
in the perspective of Adisa, -
4:04 - 4:05who'd give anything to take my place.
-
4:06 - 4:08I find the positives
because that's what she would do. -
4:08 - 4:10She would work with the situation
-
4:10 - 4:12even if she doesn't like
everything about it. -
4:12 - 4:16And I feel this should be easier to do
than it actually is, but it's not. -
4:16 - 4:19I challenge you to think about your life
-
4:19 - 4:23from the perspective of someone
who'd give anything to take your place. -
4:23 - 4:27Find the positives
and encourage others to do the same. -
4:27 - 4:30Know that it's only
a portion of your life, -
4:30 - 4:32and it's not the worst thing
you could be doing. -
4:32 - 4:36I know it can be hard; trust me,
I struggle with it everyday. -
4:36 - 4:37Just remember:
-
4:37 - 4:40don't take anything for granted
and embrace the stuff you don't like -
4:40 - 4:44because there's someone out there
who'd give anything to take your place. -
4:44 - 4:45(Applause)

I think that she says (2:52):
When I hear my alarm waking me up
for school, I get ready in a tired daze, and not "for an entire day".
