    SHERYL BURGSTAHLER:
    How welcoming
  • 0:03 - 0:07
    is your department to faculty
    members who have disabilities?
  • 0:07 - 0:10
    Hello, I'm Sheryl
    Burgstahler, the Director
  • 0:10 - 0:14
    of the DO-IT Center and
    the AccessADVANCE project.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    Today I'll share
    some tips for making
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    STEM departments more inclusive
    of faculty with disabilities.
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    Application pools
    for faculty positions
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    have become
    increasingly diverse,
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    yet some applicants
    and employees
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    with disabilities
    encounter challenges
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    that occur during the
    employment application process
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    and after they're hired.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    Barriers include those related
    to facilities, meetings,
  • 0:44 - 0:51
    courses, digital documents,
    services, and online resources.
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    Imagine a person who's blind
    discovering that they cannot
  • 0:54 - 0:59
    access digital job application
    forms with a screen reader.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    Imagine a professor who cannot
    hear when microphones are not
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    used during a large meeting.
  • 1:05 - 1:09
    Imagine an instructor with
    health-related disabilities
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    who fears that
    requesting accommodation
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    may affect their chances
    for earning tenure.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    Campus leaders should adjust
    institutional and departmental
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    policies and procedures
    to ensure that they
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    reflect an inclusive culture.
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    Answering the
    following questions
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    can help you get started--
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    is the physical environment
    accessible, comfortable,
  • 1:29 - 1:35
    and safe for individuals
    with a range of abilities?
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    Are support staff prepared
    to work with faculty
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    who have disabilities?
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    Do flexible policies allow
    individuals to attend
  • 1:44 - 1:48
    meetings and work remotely?
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    Is it clear to
    faculty how to request
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    disability-related
    accommodations?
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    And is there guidance in
    choosing assistive technology?
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    Are accommodations
    provided and funded
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    through a central
    institutional unit,
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    thus avoiding the appearance
    that individual faculty
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    members with disabilities
    are a financial burden
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    to the department?
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    Are disability-related
    issues addressed
  • 2:14 - 2:18
    in all campus and departmental
    diversity, equity,
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    and inclusion initiatives?
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    Taking steps in response
    to questions like these
  • 2:24 - 2:28
    can also benefit faculty who
    do not disclose disabilities.
  • 2:28 - 2:32

    simply one aspect of diversity.

    Increasing the
    participation of people
  • 2:56 - 2:59
    with disabilities
    among STEM faculty

    strengthens these fields with
    their unique perspectives
