Switching to the MacBook Air | 1 Week Later Review

  • 0:00 - 0:02
So I've been using the new MacBook Air
  • 0:02 - 0:03
    over the past week now.
  • 0:03 - 0:06
I purposely bought the base model,
  • 0:06 - 0:08
    primarily because that's the model
  • 0:08 - 0:09
that most people are going to buy.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
I wanted to see what it would be
    switching to this
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    over my MacBook Pro,
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    which is here,
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    the M4 Max MacBook Pro.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
This MacBook Pro actually cost me $4,000--
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    over $4,000.
  • 0:22 - 0:23
    Yet this costs $1,000.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
This has the M4 Max chip in it
  • 0:26 - 0:29
and it also has a 36 GB of Unified Memory.
  • 0:29 - 0:30
Big jump there between the two.
  • 0:30 - 0:31
But I just wanted to see
  • 0:31 - 0:33
what the M4 MacBook Air would be like
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    and whether it could handle
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    most of my workload.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    Considering this MacBook Air
is a fourth of the price,
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    it has been very interesting.
  • 0:41 - 0:42
I also have the Silver version here,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
now that the Space Gray has gone,
  • 0:44 - 0:45
and there is no Space Black,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
I think the Silver looks best.
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    And here's a shot comparing
    the Space Black,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    Space Gray, and Silver
    for anyone interested.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
What is surprising with this MacBook Pro
  • 0:53 - 0:55
is that Apple have lowered the price.
  • 0:55 - 0:56
Now let me say that again,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    Apple have lowered the price
  • 0:58 - 1:00
of a product, of a new product,
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    not something that Apple
    are known for whatsoever.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
And not only have they lowered the price,
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    they have also given you
    more for the money.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
You now have a 16 GB
    of Unified Memory compared
  • 1:10 - 1:12
to the 8 GB in previous models.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    The design itself is unchanged,
  • 1:14 - 1:15
which I think is a good thing.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
This form factor is the best.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    It's super thin, light,
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    and feels great.
  • 1:20 - 1:20
    It always surprises me
  • 1:20 - 1:23
how thin MacBook Airs are when I use them.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
It makes it ideal for travelling.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
Apple have completed nailed the design here.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
I also much prefer the 13 inch size
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    over the 15 inch size,
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    and that's purely down
    to personal preference.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    I've always preferred smaller laptops.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
I think to myself it would be even better
  • 1:36 - 1:37
if we saw a 12 inch version.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
But hey, 13 inches, I think, is a great size.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
The 15 inch model is also $200 more.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    Now, I don't think it's worth $200 more.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
But it does also have two more GPU cores.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
And if you really want that 15 inch,
  • 1:49 - 1:50
maybe it might be worth it for you.
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    Alongside this MacBook Air,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
I've also been using this new monitor from Asus,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
who are also sponsoring this video.
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    When I first unboxed it,
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    I was actually really impressed
  • 1:57 - 1:58
by the design of this thing.
  • 1:58 - 1:59
    It's not like other monitors.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
You can tell Asus have spent time
    designing this monitor
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    and it looks fantastic.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
The back in particular just looks amazing.
  • 2:06 - 2:07
It also comes with a great stand
  • 2:07 - 2:08
that offers a ton of movement.
  • 2:08 - 2:09
    You have tilt, height,
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    and rotating options.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
This is part of Asus' ProArt lineup.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    So they provide a bunch
of colour accuracy test shots in the box
  • 2:17 - 2:19
to show that it's been thoroughly tested.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    They specifically compare it
  • 2:21 - 2:23
to other much higher-end production monitors,
  • 2:23 - 2:26
which can be in the five figure price range.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
This isn't meant to be compared
    to cheap OLED monitors
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    due to how it's tuned.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
It's designed for anyone who does content creation,
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    whether you're a filmmaker, photographer,
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    3D artist or a designer.
  • 2:36 - 2:39
If you want super top notch
    colour accuracy,
  • 2:39 - 2:40
this is a monitor for it.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    It's a 31.5 inch QD-OLED monitor
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    that's 4K in resolution,
  • 2:45 - 2:48
and it also does up to 240 Hz.
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    And of course,
  • 2:49 - 2:51
viewing any content on it is sublime.
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    OLEDs have always been amazing
    in this area.
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    It has Thunderbolt 4 built-in,
  • 2:55 - 2:58
so you can connect a MacBook
    with one cable
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    and daisy chain
    other thunderbolt accessories
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    like another monitor.
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    The Thunderbolt port also provides
up to 96 watts of power.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
I was able to get 240 Hz
    right out of the box
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    with the MacBook Air,
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    and it is buttery smooth.
  • 3:10 - 3:11
It's perfect for anyone who's looking
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    for a high-quality OLED monitor
  • 3:13 - 3:14
    for their Mac,
  • 3:14 - 3:16
which also has amazing colour accuracy.
  • 3:16 - 3:17
So make sure to check it out.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
I'll leave a link to it,
    down in the description below.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
This MacBook Air also has the new M4 chip in it
  • 3:21 - 3:23
and as most people will know,
  • 3:23 - 3:25
the M-series of chips for Apple
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    have just been a revelation.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    You get top notch performance
  • 3:29 - 3:31
for a lot less power and a lot less heat,
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    so it's made
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    for some very powerful chips
  • 3:35 - 3:37
that can go in very compact laptops.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
This specifically has the base tier M4 chip,
  • 3:39 - 3:42
    which has a 10-core CPU and a 8-core GPU.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    I've been using this machine
  • 3:44 - 3:46
just like how I'd use my MacBook Pro.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
I've not hidden anything away from it.
  • 3:48 - 3:48
    And let me tell you,
  • 3:48 - 3:50
I have been a lot more impressed
  • 3:50 - 3:51
than I thought I would be.
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    I wasn't expecting this
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    to be nearly as good
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    as my MacBook Pro
  • 3:55 - 3:57
when it comes to a lot of things.
  • 3:57 - 3:58
It handles all of the standard stuff
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    extremely well as you'd expect.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
I've been working away at apps like Figma
  • 4:02 - 4:03
for all of my design work,
  • 4:03 - 4:04
and I feel like this is quite basic now.
  • 4:04 - 4:06
I think most people are going to be fine
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    using something like Figma,
  • 4:07 - 4:09
especially if you have heavy Figma files,
  • 4:09 - 4:10
now that you have the upgraded
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    Unified Memory of 16 GB,
  • 4:12 - 4:14
if you have a heavy Figma files
  • 4:14 - 4:15
    with lots of different screens,
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    you shouldn't have an issue.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
Lightroom editing as well has been no issues.
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    I've been editing photos
    very, very fast and snappy.
  • 4:21 - 4:22
Being able to go through my library quickly,
  • 4:22 - 4:24
copy and paste edits and stuff.
  • 4:24 - 4:25
    It's been very, very smooth.
  • 4:25 - 4:27
So here I am editing a video,
  • 4:27 - 4:29
this is for my sort of favourite Mac apps,
  • 4:29 - 4:30
Mac apps I can't live without.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    I have two clips here,
  • 4:33 - 4:34
    I have a screen recording
  • 4:34 - 4:36
and I have the A-roll of myself.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
So if we hover over, we can see,
  • 4:39 - 4:40
    A-roll of myself.
  • 4:40 - 4:41
    And I also have
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    the screen recording.
  • 4:43 - 4:44
And I've got them set up
  • 4:44 - 4:45
    as a multicam clip,
  • 4:45 - 4:46
so that I can switch between the two,
  • 4:46 - 4:48
so that when I'm demoing the app,
  • 4:48 - 4:50
you can see me in the corner.
  • 4:50 - 4:52
    And obviously, I'm taking up...
  • 4:52 - 4:55
    I had the screen recording
sort of main focus of the screen.
  • 4:56 - 4:58
    When I, for example--
  • 4:58 - 5:00
Let's have a look at this one.
  • 5:00 - 5:02
So right now I have a set it to
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    Better Performance.
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    And with Better Performance,
  • 5:06 - 5:07
    it does play
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    fairly smoothly.
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    It can jitter sometimes.
  • 5:17 - 5:18
    It's okay right now,
  • 5:18 - 5:19
    but that's at Better Performance.
  • 5:19 - 5:21
If I go to Better Quality,
  • 5:22 - 5:23
    and I start playing...
  • 5:24 - 5:26
it seems to be doing fine right now.
  • 5:26 - 5:27
    But what would happen is--
  • 5:27 - 5:29
    It's not showing right now,
  • 5:29 - 5:30
I think it's because Final Cut Pro
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    has done the background rendering.
  • 5:32 - 5:33
If you're in the middle of an edit
  • 5:33 - 5:35
and you have two clips like this,
  • 5:35 - 5:36
    two heavy clips,
  • 5:36 - 5:39
    because I'm using 10-bit S-log footage,
  • 5:39 - 5:40
    quite heavy footage,
  • 5:40 - 5:41
    which is also compressed.
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    Thankfully, the Mac has,
  • 5:43 - 5:45
the Media Engines and whatever else,
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    but it isn't Air.
  • 5:46 - 5:47
    It's not Pro,
  • 5:47 - 5:49
so it doesn't have as many Media Engines.
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    For doing edits like this,
  • 5:51 - 5:52
    it works.
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    It's not perfect,
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    there are sometimes dropped frames.
  • 5:56 - 5:57
It can be a bit slow
  • 5:57 - 5:58
    when it comes to playback.
  • 5:58 - 6:00
    I mean, right now, though,
  • 6:00 - 6:01
    it's running smoothly.
  • 6:01 - 6:01
    I think, like I said,
  • 6:01 - 6:02
    it's because it's done
  • 6:02 - 6:03
    a lot of background rendering.
  • 6:03 - 6:05
I'm editing this video right now
  • 6:05 - 6:06
and there's a lot going on.
  • 6:06 - 6:09
This is actually one of my more complex videos.
  • 6:10 - 6:12
    My review videos
    are technically a bit easier,
  • 6:12 - 6:13
    but for stuff like this,
  • 6:13 - 6:14
    we have multicams,
  • 6:14 - 6:14
    you have different cameras
  • 6:14 - 6:15
and you're going in and out
  • 6:15 - 6:17
with effects and you have overlays,
  • 6:17 - 6:18
    where you have two clips
  • 6:18 - 6:19
    on top of each other.
  • 6:19 - 6:20
It has to show both the clips,
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    which means it's playing
both clips at the same time.
  • 6:22 - 6:24
It can be a bit heavier on the chip,
  • 6:24 - 6:25
    but it works.
  • 6:25 - 6:26
    I think if you're someone
  • 6:26 - 6:27
    who's interested
    in doing basic video editing.
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    Maybe you're shooting
    stuff with an iPhone
  • 6:29 - 6:31
or a sort of Insta360 or whatever it is,
  • 6:31 - 6:33
one of those handheld gimbal cameras.
  • 6:34 - 6:35
You are not gonna have any issues here
  • 6:35 - 6:36
    with the M4 chip.
  • 6:36 - 6:38
You will not have any issues whatsoever.
  • 6:38 - 6:40
And that's what's so impressive to me.
  • 6:40 - 6:42
The only downside with a chip like this,
  • 6:42 - 6:44
which is completely to be expected, by the way,
  • 6:44 - 6:46
is when it comes to rendering video
  • 6:46 - 6:47
in something like Final Cut Pro.
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    When I was rendering videos
  • 6:49 - 6:50
    the sort of same videos
  • 6:50 - 6:52
that I would edit on my MacBook Pro,
  • 6:52 - 6:54
the render times would be double,
  • 6:54 - 6:56
    sometimes triple the time.
  • 6:56 - 6:58
So that can really add on a lot of time,
  • 6:58 - 7:00
if you're rendering a lot of videos.
  • 7:00 - 7:01
    Especially for someone like me,
  • 7:01 - 7:03
where I'm rendering multiple videos a week,
  • 7:03 - 7:05
I'm sometimes having to re-render things
  • 7:05 - 7:07
because I'm having to go back
    and edit something.
  • 7:07 - 7:09
I'm sometimes having to render videos
  • 7:09 - 7:10
for clients and stuff very quickly as well.
  • 7:11 - 7:12
Time for me is very, very valuable.
  • 7:12 - 7:15
So that's really one of the downsides
    of the M4 chip.
  • 7:15 - 7:16
    But again,
  • 7:16 - 7:17
it wasn't really designed for that.
  • 7:17 - 7:19
So it's still an amazing chip
  • 7:19 - 7:20
for everything that it can do.
  • 7:20 - 7:22
    If you're someone
    who's just getting started
  • 7:22 - 7:23
    with content creation,
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    maybe you're just making
that odd video here and there,
  • 7:25 - 7:27
maybe you're doing some 3D rendering,
    some 3D editing,
  • 7:27 - 7:29
whatever it might be, AI stuff.
  • 7:29 - 7:30
I think this is gonna be completely fine
  • 7:30 - 7:31
    just to start out with,
  • 7:31 - 7:32
    maybe down the line
  • 7:32 - 7:34
you can consider something like a Pro,
  • 7:34 - 7:36
but for how much this can do,
  • 7:36 - 7:37
    the M4 chip can do,
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    I've genuinely been very impressed.
  • 7:39 - 7:41
As expected, battery life is fantastic.
  • 7:41 - 7:43
Apple have really nailed the battery life
  • 7:43 - 7:44
when it comes to these laptops now.
  • 7:44 - 7:46
I don't think most people need to worry,
  • 7:46 - 7:47
    unless they're doing
    super, super heavy stuff.
  • 7:47 - 7:49
    Maybe you're spending
    the whole day video editing,
  • 7:49 - 7:51
then yeah, you might need to connect it
  • 7:51 - 7:52
    to a charger.
  • 7:52 - 7:55
But for doing sort of admin work
    and stuff like that,
  • 7:55 - 7:56
    web browsing, watching videos,
  • 7:56 - 7:58
it is going to last you
    the whole day no problem.
  • 7:58 - 8:01
    Now let's go through
    some downsize and improvements
  • 8:01 - 8:02
that I think could be made to the MacBook Air.
  • 8:02 - 8:04
    First up is the connectivity.
  • 8:04 - 8:06
I wish it had an extra Thunderbolt port.
  • 8:06 - 8:07
So we have two Thunderbolt ports
  • 8:07 - 8:08
    and the charger,
  • 8:08 - 8:09
    which is nice,
  • 8:09 - 8:10
it's nice having the MagSafe charger.
  • 8:10 - 8:13
But we know, with the Mac Mini, for example,
  • 8:13 - 8:15
that you can have an extra Thunderbolt port
  • 8:15 - 8:16
    with the base M4 chip.
  • 8:17 - 8:19
And the Mac Mini also has
    two extra USB-C ports,
  • 8:19 - 8:21
so that's five ports in total.
  • 8:21 - 8:23
It would have been nice to maybe see
  • 8:23 - 8:25
an extra Thunderbolt port on this side, specifically,
  • 8:25 - 8:26
because everything is on this side.
  • 8:26 - 8:28
I kind of feel like, it just makes it quite limiting
  • 8:28 - 8:29
    when you're connecting stuff,
  • 8:29 - 8:30
    because you gotta make sure
  • 8:30 - 8:32
    they have enough length
    on the cable or whatever.
  • 8:32 - 8:33
    It would have been nice
  • 8:33 - 8:35
    to have another
    Thunderbolt port on this side
  • 8:35 - 8:36
    or even a USB-C port.
  • 8:36 - 8:38
The display on this is, I think,
  • 8:38 - 8:40
    actually, that's a disservice.
  • 8:40 - 8:41
I think actually it's better than okay.
  • 8:41 - 8:42
It's actually a really good display.
  • 8:42 - 8:45
However, it isn't an OLED, it isn't a Mini LED,
  • 8:45 - 8:47
it's just a standard LCD display.
  • 8:47 - 8:48
It would be nice to see Mini LED
  • 8:48 - 8:50
    or LED at some point
  • 8:50 - 8:51
    because they are getting cheaper
  • 8:51 - 8:52
    and easier
  • 8:52 - 8:53
to sort of put in machines like this.
  • 8:53 - 8:54
    So maybe in the future
  • 8:54 - 8:55
    we get something like that.
  • 8:55 - 8:57
Also, you're limited to 60 Hz.
  • 8:57 - 8:58
    Now the 60 Hz thing,
  • 8:58 - 9:01
that I feel like a lot of people
    do complain about.
  • 9:01 - 9:02
But I really do think 60 Hz
  • 9:02 - 9:04
    for most people
    who are buying this machine,
  • 9:04 - 9:06
60 Hz, they probably don't even notice
  • 9:06 - 9:08
the difference between 60 Hz and 120 Hz.
  • 9:08 - 9:11
60 Hz is usually enough for them.
  • 9:11 - 9:14
So that I don't think is as important,
  • 9:14 - 9:16
    it would just be nice
to have Mini LED or OLED.
  • 9:16 - 9:18
And then finally, is the storage,
  • 9:18 - 9:20
you have 256 GB of storage
  • 9:20 - 9:21
    with the base model.
  • 9:21 - 9:22
    So because of that,
  • 9:22 - 9:23
    I've been using it
  • 9:23 - 9:25
with an external SSD connected up to it,
  • 9:25 - 9:27
I'd say 80% of the time.
  • 9:27 - 9:29
I feel like I'm an edge case though,
  • 9:29 - 9:30
    because obviously I'm editing
  • 9:30 - 9:31
lots of photos and videos off.
  • 9:31 - 9:33
I need a hard drive to edit off.
  • 9:33 - 9:34
It's just not gonna be enough storage.
  • 9:34 - 9:37
But that's not even the issue, I think.
  • 9:37 - 9:38
    I think it'd be great
  • 9:38 - 9:40
upgrading it to 512 or 1 TB.
  • 9:40 - 9:43
The problem is the pricing for the upgrade.
  • 9:43 - 9:45
    It's $200 each time.
  • 9:45 - 9:48
So to upgrade from 256 GB of storage
  • 9:48 - 9:50
    to 512 GB of storage,
  • 9:50 - 9:51
    where you're only adding
  • 9:51 - 9:53
    256 GB of storage here,
  • 9:53 - 9:55
    it's an extra $200.
  • 9:55 - 9:57
    I think that is ridiculous.
  • 9:57 - 9:59
I think that is just so overpriced
  • 9:59 - 10:00
    for what it is.
  • 10:01 - 10:05
I have it written down here, for $140,
  • 10:05 - 10:08
you can get a Samsung T7
  • 10:08 - 10:10
    2 TB, external drive,
  • 10:10 - 10:11
    for $140.
  • 10:11 - 10:13
    To upgrade to 2 TB
  • 10:13 - 10:13
    on the MacBook Air,
  • 10:13 - 10:16
it's going to cost you $800.
  • 10:16 - 10:18
How does that make any sense?
  • 10:18 - 10:19
    The two biggest changes, though,
  • 10:19 - 10:21
and the two changes that I think make
  • 10:21 - 10:22
the most significant amount of difference
  • 10:22 - 10:24
    is the M4 chip
  • 10:24 - 10:26
    and that upgraded Unified Memory.
  • 10:26 - 10:29
Going from 8 GB to 16 GB of Unified Memory
  • 10:29 - 10:31
is going to make a world of a difference.
  • 10:31 - 10:32
It's made a world of a difference for me.
  • 10:32 - 10:33
    When I've been using apps,
  • 10:33 - 10:35
when I've had so many different apps open
  • 10:35 - 10:36
    on this machine,
  • 10:36 - 10:38
when I've had Final Cut Pro, Lightroom,
  • 10:38 - 10:39
    Arc, Slack, Notion,
  • 10:40 - 10:41
all open at the same time.
  • 10:41 - 10:42
    I've had no issues.
  • 10:42 - 10:43
    It's run so smoothly
  • 10:43 - 10:45
    because of that doubled memory.
  • 10:45 - 10:46
I think that's where the MacBook Air
  • 10:46 - 10:47
    is really good value.
  • 10:47 - 10:49
If you're willing to put up
    with a few downside,
  • 10:49 - 10:50
    as I mentioned,
  • 10:50 - 10:52
this is definitely the best value MacBook
  • 10:52 - 10:53
    you can get right now.
  • 10:53 - 10:54
Make sure to check out my other video
  • 10:54 - 10:56
where I did a MacBook buying guide,
  • 10:56 - 10:58
    where you can see
    all of the MacBooks compared,
  • 10:58 - 11:00
what I think is worth the money,
  • 11:00 - 11:01
what I think isn't worth the money.
  • 11:01 - 11:01
    Make sure check that out.
  • 11:01 - 11:04
And I also have a video on the must have apps
  • 11:04 - 11:04
    if you have a Mac.
  • 11:05 - 11:06
So hopefully, you guys enjoyed it.
