My Last Days: Meet Zach Sobiech

  • 0:05 - 0:11
    [Music]
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    >> Zach can't stop writing lyrics.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
There are so many songs he wants to leave behind.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
With only months to live, his song called "Clouds"
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    was born.
  • 0:20 - 0:23
♫ I fell down, down, down into this dark
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    and lonely hole.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
♫ There was no one there to care
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    about me anymore. ♫
  • 0:36 - 0:42
    >> [Zach] I think every teenager out there feels invincible and they'll, never admit it.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
It's the not the kind of invincible like Superman.
  • 0:45 - 0:46
It's the kind of invincible like,
  • 0:46 - 0:47
  • 0:47 - 0:49
"I'll see you in five months."
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    I thought I was invincible.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
I was ready for college, pretty much.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
And I was planning out way ahead,
  • 0:59 - 1:02
and it turns out sometimes you can't do that.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    My name is Zach Sobiech.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    I'm 17-years-old, and I have osteosarcoma.
  • 1:10 - 1:15
I've been told I have a few months to live, but I still have a lot of work to do.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    I want everyone to know.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
You don't have to find out you're dying to start living.
  • 1:20 - 1:26
  • 1:26 - 1:40
    [Music]
  • 1:40 - 1:45
You know, most people live kind of in the middle -- in between like a dream come true and you're dying.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
And it's -- it is a very comfortable place to live.
  • 1:49 - 1:53
I'm living on the two extreme ends; so you have really, really good days
  • 1:53 - 1:55
and you have really, really bad days.
  • 2:00 - 2:05
    >> [Laura] Zach has always been incredibly empathetic and compassionate.
  • 2:06 - 2:13
At this basketball game I was kind of laughing about how one of the players had kind of a funny run.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
And he goes, "Yeah, but he's really good at --"
  • 2:16 - 2:18
And then he listed all these things.
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    And I thought, "Awww."
  • 2:19 - 2:25
He's just always looking for the good in people, and I think he's taught all of us that's how it's done.
  • 2:25 - 2:30
    >> [Ally] I would say that Zach is a testament to the fact that things are okay
  • 2:30 - 2:34
when you believe in something greater than yourself and the world.
  • 2:34 - 2:38
    >> You can be with Zach and just by sitting there with him, feel better.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
He's got -- I don't know how to describe it.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
He's got this aura about him.
  • 2:43 - 2:48
    >> [Zach] What makes you happy is seeing someone else smile because you put it there.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
That's what awesome about living in this world.
  • 2:51 - 2:53
It's that you can help people.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
  • 2:55 - 3:01
I like the structure of our family with two guys, two girls for the kids and mom and dad
  • 3:01 - 3:03
because it kind of evens everything out.
  • 3:04 - 3:07
    >> [Laura] Grace has always been his baby.
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    >> [Grace] Zach is like the other half of me.
  • 3:09 - 3:16
All we need is to be there like in the same room with each other, and that's enough for us.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
I'm thinking about my life without Zach.
  • 3:19 - 3:20
It's really hard to think about it.
  • 3:20 - 3:25
Like, I really get, like sick to my stomach when I think about that.
  • 3:26 - 3:31
    >> [Laura] Zach had been going through the eighth grade, and he and his sister decided to go for a run.
  • 3:31 - 3:35
And he came back from the run and he told me, "Mom, my left hip hurts."
  • 3:36 - 3:43
So, we went in for an MRI and at this point still I'm thinking cancer was still not on my radar at all.
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    >> [Zach] They went in and found out that it was cancer.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    It was osteosarcoma.
  • 3:50 - 3:54
And it was so unbelievable, honestly.
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    >> [Grace] I was upstairs in the kitchen,
  • 4:04 - 4:07
and I just went upstairs and I cried.
  • 4:15 - 4:22
And I just said that I've got to live life like, well, Zach's going to die tomorrow.
  • 4:23 - 4:27
    >> [Zach] My mom walked in on me once, and I was laying on the ground because I didn't want to
  • 4:27 - 4:30
associate my bed with being sick.
  • 4:30 - 4:36
    >> [Laura] Five days after he finished chemotherapy, he had his routine CT scan of his chest,
  • 4:36 - 4:39
and they found tumors in both lungs.
  • 4:39 - 4:42
She told us six months to a year.
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    >> [Zach] I just didn't understand that.
  • 4:44 - 4:48
Like, it didn't make any sense to me.
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    >> [Laura] We did have an option of surgery,
  • 4:51 - 4:55
but that would mean they would have to take his left leg and half of his pelvis,
  • 4:55 - 4:57
and he wouldn't even be able to sit up.
  • 4:57 - 5:03
That's when we got to the point where we have to make decisions about quality of life.
  • 5:03 - 5:08
    >> [Zach] With the hospital it's the most sterile place in the world,
  • 5:08 - 5:11
but you just do not feel clean there at all.
  • 5:11 - 5:18
And it was tough being there because you just -- you felt totally disconnected.
  • 5:18 - 5:22
    >> [Laura] He decided, "I don't want to be in the hospital all the time."
  • 5:22 - 5:27
"I want to be out with friends. I don't want to feel sick, and I want to be home."
  • 5:30 - 5:34
    >> In a house like this where we have six people and four kids,
  • 5:34 - 5:39
part of time time I enjoy Zach is just when we are alone -- just sittin' there.
  • 5:39 - 5:40
We could be watching a movie.
  • 5:40 - 5:42
We could be talking cars or whatever.
  • 5:43 - 5:49
    >> Zach likes to dream big, so he kind of got into cars and car magazines and stuff
  • 5:49 - 5:52
and that was one thing he would do in the hospital.
  • 5:52 - 5:53
    >> I would sort through the cars and would be like,
  • 5:53 - 5:57
OK, which one is the least expensive but has the highest performance?
  • 5:57 - 6:02
Nissan GTR is like, oh, it's perfect.
  • 6:02 - 6:06
I've dreamt of that car for years.
  • 6:07 - 6:13
    >> So, we have a little tiny surprise for you.
  • 6:13 - 6:14
    >> I don't like surprises.
  • 6:14 - 6:17
    >> Oh, I think you're gonna like this one.
  • 6:18 - 6:19
    >> What is it?
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    Holy crap!
  • 6:24 - 6:25
    Are you serious?
  • 6:26 - 6:28
    >> You get to drive it for a week.
  • 6:28 - 6:29
    [Laughing]
  • 6:30 - 6:32
    >> [Grace] You're driving me places.
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    >> [Zach] Oh, my god.
  • 6:34 - 6:35
    >> Hey, Zach, what's up?
  • 6:35 - 6:36
    You like that?
  • 6:36 - 6:37
    >> Yeah!
  • 6:37 - 6:38
    >> It's pretty impressive, huh?
  • 6:39 - 6:41
The look on his face was so cool.
  • 6:41 - 6:44
And when Zach lights up, it makes everyone happy.
  • 6:44 - 6:48
    >> [Zach] It's like being dunked in cold water and not being able to breathe but in a really good way.
  • 6:48 - 7:00
    [Music]
  • 7:00 - 7:01
    >> It wasn't the car.
  • 7:01 - 7:09
It was the experience the car created and the joy that Zach receives from driving it.
  • 7:10 - 7:13
And the joy I receive from being with Zach when he got to drive it.
  • 7:13 - 7:17
    >> [Zach] Being able to experience these things things it helps a lot.
  • 7:17 - 7:24
Because you can either sit in your basement and wait, or you can get out there and do
  • 7:24 - 7:25
    some crazy stuff.
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    [Music]
  • 7:27 - 7:32
    >> When we found the cancer in his pelvis, I said, you know, maybe you should start writing
  • 7:32 - 7:33
    some letters.
  • 7:33 - 7:41
    >> [Zach] Music is a way I can express myself without having to burden everyone else.
  • 7:41 - 7:46
    >> [Laura] I was cleaning up downstairs, and there was a lot of paper laying around
  • 7:46 - 7:50
with different scribblings on it and I picked one up and I read it and it was "Clouds."
  • 7:50 - 7:51
  • 7:51 - 7:56
    [Music]
  • 7:56 - 8:01
    >> Sammy and Zach have been dear friends for many, many years.
  • 8:01 - 8:04
    They're song writers together.
  • 8:04 - 8:06
That's how they communicate with each other.
  • 8:07 - 8:11
    >> [Sammy] Our musical thing has like -- it's like really become something,
  • 8:11 - 8:13
and it's become a part of us.
  • 8:14 - 8:20
There's going to be nobody like him to do it with again and, like, that's going to be really hard.
  • 8:21 - 8:26
    >> [Zach] I find that with my situation it is unchartered ground at the other end.
  • 8:26 - 8:31
I have closure, and she won't have closure.
  • 8:32 - 8:38
    >> [Sammy] There are very, very, very few people I love as much as I love Zach.
  • 8:38 - 8:44
    [Guitar music]
  • 8:44 - 8:49
    >> [Zach] My closure is being able to get my feelings into these songs,
  • 8:49 - 8:56
so they can have something to remember me by or, you know, lean on when I was gone.
  • 8:57 - 9:01
    >> For me it's Zach's way of saying, "I'm okay."
  • 9:07 - 9:08
    Saying good-bye.
  • 9:10 - 9:16
And I'm just so grateful that it's there because I'm gonna need it later.
  • 9:17 - 9:23
    >> [Sam] His music is kind of like a record of his like how much he cares for us.
  • 9:24 - 9:27
    >> [Grace] There's a little song that we wrote me: "For my Grace."
  • 9:28 - 9:32
So, I'll keep that always with me constantly.
  • 9:32 - 9:35
    [Guitar music]
  • 9:35 - 9:36
    >> Yeah, we'll stop there.
  • 9:36 - 9:37
    >> Okay.
  • 9:39 - 9:39
    I love you.
  • 9:39 - 9:42
    >> Aww, I love you too, Grace.
  • 9:42 - 9:44
See that's like the first time ever.
  • 9:44 - 9:45
    >> Is it really?
  • 9:45 - 9:46
    >> Pretty much.
  • 9:49 - 9:50
    Yeah, she's pretty cool.
  • 9:53 - 9:59
I think with my diagnosis we've become a better and stronger family.
  • 9:59 - 10:01
We all love each other just that much more.
  • 10:01 - 10:06
Because when you go through stuff like that, you go through it together.
  • 10:07 - 10:10
    >> You have to stick together as a family.
  • 10:10 - 10:12
    I mean that's imperative.
  • 10:12 - 10:15
Because, you know, we've been there ever since Zach was first diagnosed.
  • 10:15 - 10:17
We've been there as a family.
  • 10:17 - 10:21
We are all together, and we have to make it through as a family together.
  • 10:21 - 10:24
    >> [Ally] How I remember my brother?
  • 10:24 - 10:25
    Happy.
  • 10:25 - 10:26
    Always smiling.
  • 10:26 - 10:30
Always limping around with his funny little walk.
  • 10:30 - 10:32
That's as simple as it is -- happy, I guess.
  • 10:34 - 10:41
    >> My friends -- I don't know if they've accepted, you know, me being terminal or not.
  • 10:41 - 10:46
They know that if they just treat me the same everything will be fine, honestly.
  • 10:47 - 10:52
    >> He someone you can trust is going to smiling the next day despite his condition.
  • 10:54 - 10:56
    >> He is kind of just like a light in this school.
  • 10:56 - 11:00
If I have a bad day, it's not actually really a bad day if I am complaining about something.
  • 11:00 - 11:03
It's all about perspective, I think.
  • 11:03 - 11:08
    >> He will always live on in my life because of the values he's taught me, the memories we've had.
  • 11:09 - 11:11
They are so ingrained in who I am as a person.
  • 11:15 - 11:18
    >> Amy -- she's a smart girl.
  • 11:18 - 11:23
We knew he was terminal when they started dating, and she knew that.
  • 11:23 - 11:26
She sat down with her mom and talked through it and what they decided was,
  • 11:26 - 11:30
"Would you date him if he didn't have cancer?" and she said, "Yeah."
  • 11:30 - 11:34
She's really helped him through some hard times.
  • 11:35 - 11:40
    >> One of our first dates was -- we planned a picnic, you know, just in a park somewhere.
  • 11:40 - 11:44
    >> I knew he had, um -- he was going in for scans that day.
  • 11:44 - 11:49
    >> We get the results back and my doctor walks in and she's pretty quiet and she looks pretty serious.
  • 11:49 - 11:50
And it's like, well, it can't be that bad.
  • 11:50 - 11:52
    I mean, come on.
  • 11:52 - 11:55
And she goes, "So, you've got a collapsed lung."
  • 11:55 - 11:57
    I'm like, "Oh, okay."
  • 11:57 - 12:02
    >> I broke down crying because it was like the first time that it was real that he had cancer
  • 12:02 - 12:05
because before it was, everything seemed normal.
  • 12:05 - 12:08
    >> I was like, can I at least go to the picnic and then come back and have surgery?
  • 12:08 - 12:10
And they were like, "No, we need to do this now."
  • 12:10 - 12:16
    >> He was so devastated because all he cared about was getting to that date.
  • 12:16 - 12:22
    >> Yeah, I was pretty angry that I had to miss the picnic because who doesn't like a good picnic?
  • 12:22 - 12:24
I mean, ya' know? It's awesome.
  • 12:25 - 12:26
    Stupid lung.
  • 12:28 - 12:31
    [Music]
  • 12:31 - 12:31
    >> Good morning!
  • 12:32 - 12:33
    >> Good morning.
  • 12:33 - 12:35
    >> Why are you all dressed up?
  • 12:35 - 12:37
    >> Oh, yeah, it's for school.
  • 12:37 - 12:38
    >> For what?
  • 12:40 - 12:42
    >> We're not going to school today.
  • 12:43 - 12:44
    >> Where are we going?
  • 12:44 - 12:46
    >> I'll tell you.
  • 12:47 - 12:48
    >> I want to know where we're going.
  • 12:49 - 12:53
    >> Just - no. Start driving and I'll tell you.
  • 12:55 - 13:00
♫ And now we demonstrated it to the cops. And all the things we said. We were self-assured.
  • 13:03 - 13:08
♫ Cause it's a long road to wisdom, but it's a short one to being ignored.
  • 13:10 - 13:23
♫ Be in my eyes. Be in my heart. Be in my eyes ai yai yai. And be in my heart.
  • 13:26 - 13:28
♫ So now I think that I could love you back. ♫
  • 13:28 - 13:33
    >> I almost burst into tears just because it was so perfect --
  • 13:33 - 13:38
a picnic basket of cold pizza which pretty much defines our relationship right there.
  • 13:40 - 13:46
♫ It takes a man to live. It takes a woman to make him compromise. ♫
  • 13:49 - 13:52
    >> [Amy] We know what we both would want in our future.
  • 13:52 - 13:56
We know that we love each other just the same amount.
  • 13:57 - 14:06
Well, we've talked about getting married and having kids and our jobs.
  • 14:06 - 14:09
We do that a lot when we have bad days.
  • 14:09 - 14:15
So, like, when we start to cry, that's when we'll sit down and just plan it all out.
  • 14:15 - 14:17
    >> We'd have four -- three or four kids.
  • 14:17 - 14:18
    We haven't decided yet.
  • 14:18 - 14:22
But I kind of want four because you can have two boys and two girls then.
  • 14:22 - 14:25
Because that's what we have in our family, and it worked out pretty well.
  • 14:25 - 14:33
It's one of those things that, you know, it's like your ultimate dream kind of thing.
  • 14:35 - 14:39
Most people just ignore it, or most people think, "Ah, it'll never happen."
  • 14:39 - 14:43
And, you know, mine, obviously, probably won't.
  • 14:46 - 14:56
    >> Um, I think the moment I'm most scared about is leaving the hospital after he's gone
  • 14:56 - 15:03
and knowing that he's not coming with and having to walk out of there.
  • 15:05 - 15:10
    >> I will actually love her to death -- till my death.
  • 15:10 - 15:12
    But, yeah, it's -- that's the thing.
  • 15:12 - 15:19
It's like, "why not get married" because, you know, til death do us part and I'm dying
  • 15:19 - 15:20
so we better get on this.
  • 15:20 - 15:22
    That kind of thing.
  • 15:22 - 15:27
But, yeah, I do love her to death; and I will forever.
  • 15:28 - 15:39
    [Music playing]
  • 15:39 - 15:41
    >> Do you know a dance to this?
  • 15:41 - 15:43
    No?
  • 15:43 - 15:45
    >> You can walk down the isle to this.
  • 15:47 - 15:48
    >> Okay, Sobiech family.
  • 15:48 - 15:50
    Everyone come downstairs.
  • 15:51 - 15:56
So, I'm Justin, and I'm the director, and we are here making a little documentary
  • 15:56 - 15:59
    about your amazing family member.
  • 15:59 - 16:08
And I came here and I was expecting to meet a great kid who had a cool YouTube video and was inspiring,
  • 16:08 - 16:13
but I was not expecting to meet a 17-year-old that would change my life.
  • 16:13 - 16:18
So, when I first contacted your mom, I told her I wanted to make a music video for you,
  • 16:18 - 16:20
which we just, unfortunately, could't do.
  • 16:20 - 16:26
But what I was able to do was reach out to a few people, and I just told them your story.
  • 16:26 - 16:30
And I told them I wanted to do something for you because you've done so much for us.
  • 16:30 - 16:33
What resulted was something very special.
  • 16:33 - 16:34
I just want you to know,
  • 16:34 - 16:38
this stuff is not happening because you're dying.
  • 16:38 - 16:42
It is really because of the way you are living.
  • 16:42 - 16:44
I just want you to know that.
  • 16:46 - 16:50
    >> [Bryan Cranston] Zach, such a beautiful song. This is for you.
  • 16:50 - 16:55
    [Music - Clouds]
  • 16:55 - 16:56
    >> Look at that.
  • 16:56 - 16:59
    [Laughing]
  • 16:59 - 17:05
♫ Well I fell down, down, down into this dark and lonely hole. ♫

  • 17:05 - 17:09
    >> You can just tell that they all loved Zach's story and admire him so much
  • 17:09 - 17:11
and it was amazing to see.
  • 17:11 - 17:12
    >> He was in awe.
  • 17:12 - 17:16
Like, he could't believe it, and none of us could.
  • 17:16 - 17:24
♫ You were sitting there holding a rope. And we'll go up, up, up, but I'll fly a little higher.
  • 17:24 - 17:29
♫ It won't be long now, it won't be long now. ♫
  • 17:29 - 17:31
    >> The most bizarre thing I think I've ever seen.
  • 17:31 - 17:32
    Craziest feeling in the world.
  • 17:36 - 17:40
    >> Seeing everybody who loves him at the end -- it made me cry.
  • 17:40 - 17:42
    >> It really makes me want to keep on going.
  • 17:42 - 17:45
  • 17:45 - 17:54
    [Music]
  • 17:54 - 17:57
    >> Aww, Grace.
  • 17:57 - 18:06
Grace you've been my best friend for 14 years, and we've done so much together.
  • 18:08 - 18:13
It's going to be tough goin', but you got to keep being strong.
  • 18:14 - 18:16
You got to kick some butt on the basketball court too.
  • 18:18 - 18:20
You take them to the championship.
  • 18:22 - 18:29
Sam, oh, you've been the best big brother anyone could ever ask for.
  • 18:30 - 18:32
You've given me so much knowledge.
  • 18:34 - 18:40
You've helped me through so much and I think it's important that you know that I love you
  • 18:40 - 18:47
because being guys I don't think we say it too much but I do love you so much.
  • 18:50 - 18:55
Ally, squeeze from the back of the toothpaste bottle.
  • 18:56 - 18:58
    [Laughing]
  • 19:00 - 19:08
I'm going to miss you so much because you've always kept me strong in my faith and everything.
  • 19:14 - 19:19
Mom and Dad, you are the best parents that anyone could ever ask for.
  • 19:19 - 19:29
I could only wish I could have kids and raise them like you raised me because you did one hell of a job.
  • 19:31 - 19:36
You're the best parents anyone could ever ask for, and I love both of you so much.
  • 19:38 - 19:41
And thank you for being my parents.
  • 19:42 - 19:45
    [Guitar music]
  • 19:45 - 19:50
Life is just really beautiful moments one right after the other.
  • 19:50 - 19:53
All of these experiences are super, super cool.
  • 19:53 - 19:58
All of them are giving me just a little bit more closure on everything and kind of accepting everything
  • 19:58 - 20:00
    a little bit more.
  • 20:00 - 20:01
  • 20:01 - 20:31
    [Music]
  • 20:31 - 20:39
    >> He's shown me that it's not all about the grades you get or how cool you are in high school.
  • 20:39 - 20:44
It's about doing what makes you happy and no matter when you are going to go to live life
  • 20:44 - 20:45
    to the fullest every day.
  • 20:46 - 20:48
    >> It's really simple, actually.
  • 20:48 - 20:52
It's just try and make people happy.
  • 20:52 - 20:53
Maybe you have learn it when it's time.
  • 20:53 - 20:57
Maybe you have to learn it the hard way, but as long as you learn it you're going to make
  • 20:57 - 20:58
    the world a better place.
  • 20:59 - 21:04
    >> I think that's actually one of the blessings of cancer is that you kind of come out of denial.
  • 21:04 - 21:09
And so in doing that things are better.
  • 21:09 - 21:12
    That life is richer.
  • 21:12 - 21:16
    Everything means more.
  • 21:16 - 21:20
    Beauty is more beautiful.
  • 21:20 - 21:22
    He's a beutiful person.
  • 21:23 - 21:27
And I'm am so happy to have been Zach Sobiech's mom.
  • 21:29 - 21:34
    >> Death is just another thing on the agenda kind of.
  • 21:34 - 21:36
Yeah, it's scary, but the only reason it's scary because you don't know
  • 21:36 - 21:40
what's next or if there is a next.
  • 21:40 - 21:43
So, it's kind of like sitting in the dark.
  • 21:43 - 21:49
So, you can choose to be freaking out in the dark and thinking, okay what's out there?
  • 21:49 - 21:56
Or you can just relax and fall asleep and just be happy and content with everything.
  • 21:58 - 22:08
I want to be remembered as a kid who went down fighting and didn't really lose.
  • 22:11 - 22:15
