Urticating Hairs - What YOU NEED To Know About Tarantulas!

  • 0:00 - 0:01
today we're going to talk about the
  • 0:01 - 0:03
    urticating hairs of tarantulas so
  • 0:03 - 0:06
    let's get started
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    [Music]
  • 0:08 - 0:10
welcome to the tarantula collective my
  • 0:10 - 0:12
name's richard and if you're new to the
  • 0:12 - 0:14
channel i make videos about tarantulas
  • 0:14 - 0:16
scorpions and other inverts so if that's
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    something you're interested in
  • 0:17 - 0:19
make sure you hit that subscribe button
  • 0:19 - 0:20
now we all know that some species of
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    tarantulas have urticating hairs but
  • 0:22 - 0:25
when it comes to exactly which species
  • 0:25 - 0:27
have exactly what type of verticating
  • 0:27 - 0:28
hairs it seems a lot of us
  • 0:28 - 0:30
are confused on that topic so today
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    we're going to dive deep
  • 0:32 - 0:34
into sete not literally though because
  • 0:34 - 0:46
    that would be very itchy
  • 0:47 - 0:57
    [Music]
  • 0:57 - 0:58
there are two types of tarantulas in the
  • 0:58 - 1:01
world divided up depending on what part
  • 1:01 - 1:03
of the world you find them
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    [Music]
  • 1:04 - 1:06
there are new world tarantulas that can
  • 1:06 - 1:08
be found in north central and south
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    america
  • 1:09 - 1:13
sometimes referred to as bird eaters
  • 1:13 - 1:15
and there are old world tarantulas that
  • 1:15 - 1:17
can be found in the rest of the world
  • 1:17 - 1:19
usually referred to as baboons old world
  • 1:19 - 1:21
tarantulas like those found in africa
  • 1:21 - 1:24
and throughout asia for the most part
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    lack any urticating hairs
  • 1:26 - 1:27
though they do seem to possess much
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    stronger venom
  • 1:30 - 1:32
there can always be exceptions to these
  • 1:32 - 1:34
rules especially as tarantulas have not
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    nearly been studied as
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    thoroughly scientifically as they
  • 1:37 - 1:40
probably should be at this point
  • 1:40 - 1:41
even the assumption that old world
  • 1:41 - 1:43
tarantulas have stronger venom than new
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    world tarantulas
  • 1:44 - 1:46
with the exception of a few species has
  • 1:46 - 1:48
not been scientifically proven in all
  • 1:48 - 1:49
    cases
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    [Music]
  • 1:50 - 1:53
that being said it is easy to observe
  • 1:53 - 1:55
that old world tarantulas seem to be
  • 1:55 - 1:55
    more defensive
  • 1:55 - 1:57
faster to flee and more apt to show a
  • 1:57 - 2:00
threat pose in an attempt to intimidate
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    compared to new world species
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    [Music]
  • 2:07 - 2:08
new world tarantulas are not as
  • 2:08 - 2:11
defensive but they do possess urticating
  • 2:11 - 2:12
sete that they will kick up in the air
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    when they feel threatened
  • 2:15 - 2:16
around ninety percent of new world
  • 2:16 - 2:18
species have these hairs though some
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    species like some opius
  • 2:20 - 2:22
do not possess them urticating setae can
  • 2:22 - 2:24
be found on the femura of the pedopalps
  • 2:24 - 2:26
or more commonly on the abdomen
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    different types of tarantulas have
  • 2:28 - 2:30
different sette or combinations of setae
  • 2:30 - 2:32
located on different areas of the
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    [Music]
  • 2:35 - 2:36
    abdomen
  • 2:36 - 2:38
it is said that species of tarantulas in
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    the gramostola lostyodora or acanthus
  • 2:41 - 2:43
curia genera possess the most urticating
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    sete on their bodies
  • 2:45 - 2:47
but to different levels of effectiveness
  • 2:47 - 2:49
the er dedicating sete of gramostola
  • 2:49 - 2:51
species are typically harmless to humans
  • 2:51 - 2:53
and not very irritating at all
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    though tarantulas in the acanthoscuria
  • 2:55 - 2:56
genus can have hairs that are much more
  • 2:56 - 2:59
irritating and can cause severe itching
  • 2:59 - 2:59
    in rashes
  • 2:59 - 3:01
while specimens within the genus of
  • 3:01 - 3:03
theraposa are known to have the most
  • 3:03 - 3:06
serious urticating sete that can cause
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    not only itching
  • 3:07 - 3:10
and rash but burning sensations bumps or
  • 3:10 - 3:12
blisters that can last for weeks
  • 3:12 - 3:14
as well as the possibility of causing
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    breathing issues
  • 3:15 - 3:20
especially if the hairs are inhaled
  • 3:20 - 3:21
these hairs are not just kicked into the
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    air in self-defense
  • 3:23 - 3:25
but they can also be used passively by
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    some species
  • 3:26 - 3:27
and are transferred onto the webbing of
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    their burrows and surrounding areas
  • 3:30 - 3:32
as well as onto their egg sacs in an
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    attempt to ward off predators
  • 3:34 - 3:36
and counter to the common belief that
  • 3:36 - 3:38
one can build up a tolerance or immunity
  • 3:38 - 3:40
to hairs like can happen with medicine
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    or alcohol
  • 3:41 - 3:42
the reaction to urticating hairs can
  • 3:42 - 3:44
become worse the more you are exposed to
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    them
  • 3:45 - 3:47
some hairs you found slightly irritating
  • 3:47 - 3:49
in the beginning can become extremely
  • 3:49 - 3:50
    uncomfortable after
  • 3:50 - 3:52
years of repeated contact leading some
  • 3:52 - 3:54
people to no longer even be able to stay
  • 3:54 - 3:55
in the same room as some of their
  • 3:55 - 3:57
favorite species that they have kept for
  • 3:57 - 3:57
    decades
  • 3:57 - 3:59
because the discomfort has become so
  • 3:59 - 4:01
intolerable that is why it is important
  • 4:01 - 4:03
and even imperative to be careful when
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    rehousing or interacting with your
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    tarantulas and take precautions like
  • 4:07 - 4:08
    wearing gloves
  • 4:08 - 4:10
eye protection and even long sleeves
  • 4:10 - 4:11
when there is a chance you can come in
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    contact with the cete
  • 4:13 - 4:15
being macho and saying they do not
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    bother you now
  • 4:16 - 4:18
may be true but after years of that
  • 4:18 - 4:20
mindset you may realize your resistance
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    has turned into a sensitivity
  • 4:21 - 4:23
that could make keeping some of your
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    favorite tarantulas very uncomfortable
  • 4:24 - 4:29
    or even impossible
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    while researching tarantulas it is
  • 4:31 - 4:33
common to come across descriptions of
  • 4:33 - 4:33
    species
  • 4:33 - 4:35
    stating different types of urticating
  • 4:35 - 4:37
hairs that use the numbers one through
  • 4:37 - 4:37
    six
  • 4:37 - 4:39
though they usually go into no further
  • 4:39 - 4:41
detail about what this means or what the
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    differences are between the different
  • 4:43 - 4:43
    types
  • 4:43 - 4:45
in fact there are actually seven
  • 4:45 - 4:47
different types and some species have
  • 4:47 - 4:48
    two different types of urticating
  • 4:48 - 4:49
    setting
  • 4:49 - 4:50
so today we're going to break down the
  • 4:50 - 4:52
different types of hairs and explain
  • 4:52 - 4:58
what kind of tarantulas possess them
  • 5:02 - 5:05
type 1 hair these hairs are about 0.2 to
  • 5:05 - 5:07
0.6 millimeters and are embedded into
  • 5:07 - 5:09
the skin by a penetrating tip
  • 5:09 - 5:10
they are found on many species of
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    tarantula except for the gramostola
  • 5:12 - 5:13
    species
  • 5:13 - 5:14
they are also the only type of
  • 5:14 - 5:17
urticating hair possessed by the nondu
  • 5:17 - 5:17
    carponius
  • 5:17 - 5:21
the p amazonicus and vitalius species
  • 5:21 - 5:23
these hairs are not just effective when
  • 5:23 - 5:25
kicked into the air but these tarantulas
  • 5:25 - 5:26
will also kick them onto their webbing
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    and around their burrows
  • 5:28 - 5:29
as they are effective and quickly
  • 5:29 - 5:31
warding off creatures that come in
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    contact with them
  • 5:36 - 5:38
type 2 hairs are a little larger
  • 5:38 - 5:41
measuring between 0.5 to 1.5 millimeters
  • 5:41 - 5:43
and are also embedded with a penetrating
  • 5:43 - 5:45
tip this type of hair is exclusive to a
  • 5:45 - 5:47
    vicularia species
  • 5:47 - 5:49
pasha to pelme species and era de pelma
  • 5:49 - 5:50
    species
  • 5:50 - 5:52
they are not kicked into the air as a
  • 5:52 - 5:54
cloud rather they are transferred by
  • 5:54 - 5:55
    direct contact
  • 5:55 - 5:57
so when your evicularia is rubbing its
  • 5:57 - 5:59
abdomen on you it may look cute
  • 5:59 - 6:00
and you may think it's a sign of
  • 6:00 - 6:02
affection but it's actually trying to
  • 6:02 - 6:07
    rub urticating hairs on
  • 6:07 - 6:09
type 3 hairs are around the same size as
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    type 2 measuring
  • 6:11 - 6:14
    0.3 millimeters to 1.8 millimeters
  • 6:14 - 6:16
and are also embedded by a penetrating
  • 6:16 - 6:18
tip these are known as the most
  • 6:18 - 6:19
effective and most irritating type of
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    urticating hairs to vertebrates and
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    invertebrates alike
  • 6:23 - 6:25
they can be found on species in genera
  • 6:25 - 6:27
    like nandu
  • 6:27 - 6:31
    mega fapelma rockypelma
  • 6:31 - 6:34
    among many others
  • 6:34 - 6:35
    [Music]
  • 6:35 - 6:38
type 4 these hairs are much finer than
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    the previous urticating sete
  • 6:40 - 6:43
usually measured around 0.06 to 0.22
  • 6:43 - 6:43
    millimeters
  • 6:43 - 6:45
and like most cete are embedded by a
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    penetrating tip
  • 6:47 - 6:48
they are most commonly found on many
  • 6:48 - 6:51
species like those in the gramostola and
  • 6:51 - 6:52
    youthless genus
  • 6:52 - 6:54
they are very irritating to small
  • 6:54 - 6:55
animals but are among the least
  • 6:55 - 6:57
    irritating to humans
  • 6:57 - 6:59
so if you are sensitive to urticating
  • 6:59 - 7:01
    hairs gramostola and youthless
  • 7:01 - 7:03
tarantulas are probably a very good
  • 7:03 - 7:06
    choice for you
  • 7:06 - 7:09
type 5 these are extremely short and
  • 7:09 - 7:10
light compared to other types of
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    urticating setting
  • 7:12 - 7:14
and instead of penetrating the skin they
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    are embedded in hair follicles
  • 7:16 - 7:18
also unlike the previous sette these
  • 7:18 - 7:20
hairs are found on the femura of the
  • 7:20 - 7:21
    petaps
  • 7:21 - 7:23
and are exclusive to the ephebopus
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    species
  • 7:25 - 7:28
type 6 hairs are relatively rare and are
  • 7:28 - 7:30
found in the himmerhaga species and are
  • 7:30 - 7:33
also embedded in the hair follicle
  • 7:33 - 7:34
    [Applause]
  • 7:34 - 7:35
    [Music]
  • 7:35 - 7:37
type 7 these are the most recently
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    discovered urticating hairs
  • 7:39 - 7:42
described by galves and perez miles in
  • 7:42 - 7:44
2016. they are exclusive to the
  • 7:44 - 7:45
    colombian tarantula
  • 7:45 - 7:48
and the konkuamu genus and are different
  • 7:48 - 7:49
    from other types of hairs
  • 7:49 - 7:51
as they have a small patch of reverse
  • 7:51 - 7:52
    barbs near the tip
  • 7:52 - 7:55
and small main barbs extending the
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    length of the sente
  • 7:57 - 7:59
even though most people are worried
  • 7:59 - 8:01
about the venom of the tarantula
  • 8:01 - 8:02
concern and attention should really be
  • 8:02 - 8:04
    paid to urticating hairs
  • 8:04 - 8:06
    this seemingly innocuous defense
  • 8:06 - 8:07
    mechanism is often
  • 8:07 - 8:09
overlooked or even joked about among
  • 8:09 - 8:12
    tarantula keepers
  • 8:12 - 8:13
but if you have ever been on the
  • 8:13 - 8:15
    receiving end of urticating satay
  • 8:15 - 8:17
you know how irritating the reaction can
  • 8:17 - 8:19
be this is why it is very important to
  • 8:19 - 8:21
not place tarantulas on your face
  • 8:21 - 8:23
have them around your eyes or nose and
  • 8:23 - 8:25
why you definitely should never put one
  • 8:25 - 8:26
    in your mouth
  • 8:26 - 8:28
no matter how cool you think the picture
  • 8:28 - 8:30
may be and how many likes you may get on
  • 8:30 - 8:31
    instagram
  • 8:31 - 8:33
verticating hairs in the eye can cause
  • 8:33 - 8:34
    temporary blindness
  • 8:34 - 8:36
    and may require medical treatment
  • 8:36 - 8:38
getting hairs in your mouth or throat
  • 8:38 - 8:40
could cause swelling making it hard to
  • 8:40 - 8:43
talk eat or even breathe and the
  • 8:43 - 8:45
    consequences could be even worse
  • 8:45 - 8:47
if they get into your lungs in all my
  • 8:47 - 8:49
    years of keeping tarantulas
  • 8:49 - 8:50
i have found no home remedy that can
  • 8:50 - 8:52
    alleviate the discomfort of getting
  • 8:52 - 8:54
    these hairs on your skin
  • 8:54 - 8:56
i have tried ice packs warm compresses
  • 8:56 - 8:57
    calamine lotion
  • 8:57 - 9:00
duct tape hot candle wax and about any
  • 9:00 - 9:02
other suggestions you can commonly find
  • 9:02 - 9:05
on message boards and facebook groups
  • 9:05 - 9:07
the only thing to provide the slightest
  • 9:07 - 9:08
    relief has been ibuprofen
  • 9:08 - 9:10
    benadryl and a prescription steroid
  • 9:10 - 9:12
    anti-itch cream my doctor prescribed
  • 9:12 - 9:13
    once
  • 9:13 - 9:14
for the most part you just have to
  • 9:14 - 9:16
suffer through the discomfort and wait
  • 9:16 - 9:18
for your body to heal itself
  • 9:18 - 9:20
it is best to avoid getting hair on your
  • 9:20 - 9:21
    skin in the first place
  • 9:21 - 9:23
    by taking preventative measures like
  • 9:23 - 9:25
    wearing gloves long sleeves
  • 9:25 - 9:27
eye protection and even a face mask
  • 9:27 - 9:28
depending on the species that you're
  • 9:28 - 9:29
    interacting with
  • 9:29 - 9:31
    and your sensitivity
  • 9:31 - 9:34
    [Applause]
  • 9:35 - 9:37
now i know it sounds silly to be
  • 9:37 - 9:38
concerned about hair but if you've
  • 9:38 - 9:40
gotten some of that urticating set
  • 9:40 - 9:42
on your skin you know how serious it can
  • 9:42 - 9:44
be and it's only going to get worse the
  • 9:44 - 9:46
longer you let yourself be exposed to it
  • 9:46 - 9:48
now don't let this scare you or
  • 9:48 - 9:50
turn you off to the hobby because
  • 9:50 - 9:51
    keeping tarantulas is amazing
  • 9:51 - 9:54
just don't fall into that macho mindset
  • 9:54 - 9:56
and throw caution in the wind and not
  • 9:56 - 9:57
    care about hairs at all
  • 9:57 - 9:58
because as i mentioned they can be
  • 9:58 - 10:00
    extremely uncomfortable and potentially
  • 10:00 - 10:02
dangerous if they get in your eyes nose
  • 10:02 - 10:03
    or mouth
  • 10:03 - 10:04
as long as you wear gloves and long
  • 10:04 - 10:07
sleeves and a mask and eye protection if
  • 10:07 - 10:08
needed you're not going to have any
  • 10:08 - 10:09
    issues
  • 10:09 - 10:10
