1:04 - 1:11Today, deaf children and young people worldwide are too often denied their right to education.

1:11 - 1:15This is because of a lack of teachers well-trained in sign language

1:15 - 1:20and a lack of awareness by parents that their children can and have a right to go to school.

1:23 - 1:29Sign language is mandatory if these deaf people are going to learn. Without it they cannot.

1:30 - 1:34So it is a mother language that helps them to communicate with others.

1:34 - 1:38So without this it means the communication will be at zero.

1:38 - 1:41And without communication then you cannot impart skills.

3:32 - 3:37I had passed well in the mathematics, but there was no college which was accepting me.

3:37 - 3:43[Signing and interpretation] So if I go to the university and I find that there is no interpreter,

3:43 - 3:46I will look for a person who can help me to interpret

3:46 - 3:56because it is hard for me to follow something which is happening without an interpreter

3:56 - 3:59or that... if the teacher is not using sign language.

3:59 - 4:10[Signing and interpretation] In class, we don't have an interpreter but I learn together with others.

4:10 - 4:17So I sit with a person and when the lecturer is writing something or is teaching

4:17 - 4:20I always copy from my friend.
-
4:20 - 4:30If I have a question, I write it down and pass it to this person who is hearing

4:30 - 4:34and will ask the lecturer to explain.

4:34 - 4:43[Speaking softly] We are set back because we [our] disability [?] only affects the ear, not the mind.

4:43 - 4:46The mind of deaf children is as well as someone who's hearing.

5:07 - 5:08has long-term consequences.

5:08 - 5:13If deaf children do not develop the ability to communicate, they are unable to learn

5:13 - 5:16and get jobs and are isolated within their communities.

Thanks a bunch, Christopher! This evening I got waylaid because there was Fellini's "La Strada" on Arte TV (appallingly subtitled unfortunately). Then when the movie was finished, I thought I'd go on with these subtitles and you had already finished them. What a great surprise!
