Ayuno de dopamina

  • 0:12 - 0:16
I first heard the term 'dopamine fasting.'
  • 0:16 - 0:20
And this is nothing new, considering
that we live in an era of immediacy.
  • 0:22 - 0:27
    We're hyperconnected with everyone,
and this, of course, has its advantages.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    It allows us to complete
    tasks in less time,
  • 0:32 - 0:33
stay in touch with our loved ones
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    despite the distance,
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    and access information immediately.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    However, this bombardment of information
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    leads to constant overstimulation.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    Everything is fast, ephemeral,
  • 0:47 - 0:51
    and that translates into an
    endless series of dopamine spikes.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
You've probably heard of dopamine by now
  • 0:56 - 1:00
It's known as the happiness hormone
although it's not actually a hormone.
  • 1:01 - 1:05
    It's a neurotransmitter that activates
our reward system in the brain
  • 1:06 - 1:09
It's released in response to pleasures
  • 1:09 - 1:12
like when we eat a piece of chocolate
    or buy something we like,
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    creating feelings of satisfaction
    and happiness.
  • 1:19 - 1:23
But what happens if we're constantly
    releasing dopamine, as happens
  • 1:23 - 1:27
with frequent use of social media
and other forms of instant gratification
  • 1:29 - 1:33
well, our brain can become dependent
on these stimuli and therefore gets
  • 1:33 - 1:37
used to them and is always looking for
    more and more and more.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    It's paradoxical because
    we think we have everything
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    we ever wanted,
but the more things we have
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    the more dissatisfied we feel.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
So how can we stop this constant
    overstimulation in a world
  • 1:52 - 1:55
    that moves too fast?
  • 2:00 - 2:03
Well, it turns out that this
    same question was raised
  • 2:03 - 2:07
    many years ago in silicon
valley, where it is said that the term
  • 2:07 - 2:11
    "dopamine fasting" originated
in response to a routine that
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    faced a frenetic lifestyle
    full of stimuli.
  • 2:14 - 2:18
Seeking to reduce the hours spent in
front of a screen, reduce impulsive
  • 2:18 - 2:22
    behaviors, excessive use
    of social networks,
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    consumption of ultra-processed
    foods, etcetera.
  • Not Synced
    But what does dopamine fasting
    consist of and
  • Not Synced
    what is its purpose?
  • Not Synced
There really is no strict rule
on how to do dopamine fasting,
  • Not Synced
but rather the intention is to
achieve a temporary disconnection. That is,
  • Not Synced
to take a break from everything that
    generates a lot of dopamine.
  • Not Synced
for example if you feel like you can't
  • Not Synced
disconnect from your phone you can limit
or eliminate the use of social media
  • Not Synced
    or time consuming acts
  • Not Synced
to do this try deleting these apps for a
few days or a week to see how your
  • Not Synced
    routine feels
  • Not Synced
on the other hand it is also important to
set limits in other words instead of
  • Not Synced
deleting the app you could reduce the
amount of time you spend each day
  • Not Synced
for example only a short time at night
or at certain times during the day
  • Not Synced
the problem with this is that you won't
stick to it due to the lack of willpower
  • Not Synced
in these cases there are also time limits
you can set on your device to get a real
  • Not Synced
view of how much you use the app
    before it crashes
  • Not Synced
and most of the time you feel like it is
not enough time because the reality is
  • Not Synced
that the time flys when you are
    entertained
  • Not Synced
on the other hand dopamine fast also help
you focus on simple activities to
  • Not Synced
disconnect from these stimuli. you can
opt for activites that don't give you
  • Not Synced
    instand gratification such as reading,
    drawing, playing sports,
  • Not Synced
practicing hobbies, or even spending time
    in nature
  • Not Synced
sure all of this will also release
dopamine but in a much more gradual way
  • Not Synced
    leaning you off instant gratification.
I also think it is good to get used to
  • Not Synced
not fill every bit of your time with
something to watch or listen to
  • Not Synced
to be able to do tasks without having to
    to be entertained
  • Not Synced
    for example I usually disconnect
from everything while I do house work
  • Not Synced
like cleaning, tiding up, and tiding up.
These are all moments of silents
  • Not Synced
where I try to clear out mental noise
and ironically I do this with activites
  • Not Synced
that clean and reduce clutter and
    visual noise.
  • Not Synced
I feel like it helps me calm down and
also forces me to slow down.
  • Not Synced
and just as it is good to have moments of
silence for yourself there are also
  • Not Synced
other times of the day where I like to
    feel accompanied. As you know
  • Not Synced
I have been a big fan of audio books for
years. So I like to take this opportunity
  • Not Synced
to introduce you to the sponsor of this
video, "Next Story". This is an app that
  • Not Synced
gives you unlimited access to over 300,000
    audio books, Ebooks, and magazines.
  • Not Synced
I am current listening to this book
called "Good Habits" by Foomio Saki.
  • Not Synced
He is the same author as "Goodbye Things",
a really good book about minimalism
  • Not Synced
As you know I get a lot of inspiration
from Japanese culture to learn and
  • Not Synced
improve habits. So I take advantage of
the moments when I am going to work out
  • Not Synced
or when I am cooking. When I feel like
listening to things about this topic and
  • Not Synced
continuing to cultivate my mine. On the
other hand another thing I love is that
  • Not Synced
    it has reading challenges, personalized
    recommendations, and even CarPlay
  • Not Synced
integration. In other words you can keep
listening to your book on trips or car
  • Not Synced
journeys. Right now I am reading
    "Antiinflamatoria Lifestyle" and the
  • Not Synced
"Hanasaki System". So I would like to
remind you if you want to listen to these
  • Not Synced
books or many others you have a free one
month trial with my code and link that I
  • Not Synced
will leave in the description box.
  • Not Synced
and going back to fasting and how it went
for me. The truth is that the times I have
  • Not Synced
done dopamine fasting have been like many
personal challenges in which I have
  • Not Synced
uninstalled social media like TikTok and
Instagram. Which are the ones I usually
  • Not Synced
fine the most addictive, for an entire
    week.
  • Not Synced
There is no right way to do it I just felt
like I was spending too much time on these
  • Not Synced
apps and wanted to use my time in a
    different way.
  • Not Synced
    Interestingly when I started these
dopamine fasts I was surprised by the
  • Not Synced
number of times that I would unlock my
phone to go to social media
  • Not Synced
    Even with notifications uninstalled which
you know is something I have been doing
  • Not Synced
for years. I realized that sometimes it
    was even a reflex action.
  • Not Synced
Every so often maybe ever 15 or 20
minutes I would stop and look at my
  • Not Synced
phone even if it was just to check the
    time.
  • Not Synced
I would finish exercising and the first
thing that I would do is check what was on
  • Not Synced
my phone and it was surprise me
cause I already considered myself a
  • Not Synced
person who is quite detached from my
phone. So this helped me become more
  • Not Synced
aware of how much I was already using it.
  • Not Synced
On the other hand I also realized I use
social networks quite a bit as a search
  • Not Synced
    engine and having them uninstalled
frustrated me because I usually find
  • Not Synced
    things on social networks first.
Specifically when it comes to tutorials
  • Not Synced
or more visual things. It is true that I
work social networks so they are apart
  • Not Synced
of my work tool. Not only with my own but
    also those of other clients
  • Not Synced
and the truth is that as a search engine
they are very useful an that is why more
  • Not Synced
and more companies are turning to them
    to position themselves, sell, or
  • Not Synced
    communicate.
  • Not Synced
Finally, my third reflection on having
done dopamine fasts is that in general
  • Not Synced
I usually have the feeling that I never
have time for anything but then I look at
  • Not Synced
my activity on my phone and I see that
on some social networks specifically I
  • Not Synced
could have spent hours without realizing
    it.
  • Not Synced
In the end you invest 15 minutes here , 15
minutes there, all of that adds up and it
  • Not Synced
is time that we are not investing in
    other things.
  • Not Synced
Interestingly although it is not really
surprise the weeks in which I tried
  • Not Synced
dopamine fasting I became much better
organized and had more time to do more
  • Not Synced
things. You know that phrase about boredom
    being the birth of creativity.
  • Not Synced
Well indeed in those moments when I had no
    distractions I reconnected with creative
  • Not Synced
ideas as well as those things I used to do
but had not done in a long time
  • Not Synced
    like watching music videos. Before
whenever an album would come out I would
  • Not Synced
watch the music video or just lay do to
listen to the album to completely word by
  • Not Synced
    word and enjoy it
  • Not Synced
and yet in recent years I feel like music
has been more something that I listen to
  • Not Synced
in the background and that I haven't
    stopped to enjoy it such.
  • Not Synced
So I feel like these dopamine fasts have
helped me enjoy the present more and
  • Not Synced
connect with the things that I used to
like and that I had been disconnected for
  • Not Synced
    quite some time.
  • Not Synced
That said doing dopamine fasts really works
