    Eyes opened or closed, it's all the same

    because the sun never shines there.

    Up ahead, you see a light.

    When you creep in to investigate,

    a blue light flits around you.

    "I could watch this forever," you think.

    But you can't
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    because the mouth of an anglerfish has just sprung open
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    and eaten you alive.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    You are just one of many creatures
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    at the bottom of the ocean who learn too late
  • 0:42 - 0:46
    to appreciate the power of bioluminescence.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    Bioluminescence refers to the ability
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    of certain living things to create light.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    The human body can make stuff
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    like ear wax and toe nails,
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    but these organisms can turn
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    parts of their body into glow sticks.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    It's like nature made them ready to rave.
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    Why?
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    In one way or another,
  • 1:05 - 1:09
    bioluminescence improves a living thing's chances of survival.
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    Take the firefly.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    It's ability to glow green
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    helps it attract a mate on a warm, summer night,
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    but it's just one of many living things that can glow.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    The railroad worm, Phrixothrix hirtus,
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    can light up its body in two colors:
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    red and green.
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    Would you eat something
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    that looks like an airport runway?
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    Neither would any sensible predator.
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    The flashing lights keep the worm safe.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    Then there's the deep sea shrimp,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    Acantherphyra purpurea.
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    When it feels threatened,
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    it spews a cloud of glowing goo from its mouth.
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    Who doesn't run the other way
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    when they've just been puked on?
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    Plus, that puke attracts bigger predators
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    who want to eat the shrimp's enemy.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    So what if you can't bioluminesce?
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    No problem!
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    There are other ways for living things
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    to make bioluminescence work for them,
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    even if they weren't born with the equipment to glow.
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    Let's revisit the anglerfish
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    moments before it tried to eat you.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    That glowing bait on top of its head?
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    It comes from a pocket of skin called the esca.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    The esca holds bioluminescent bacteria.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    The anglerfish can't glow there by itself,
  • 2:12 - 2:16
    so it holds a sack of glowing bacteria instead.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    Remember the firefly?
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    It can actually make itself glow.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    Inside its lantern are two chemicals,
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    a luciferin and a luciferase.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    When firefly luciferase and luciferin mix together
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    in the presence of oxygen
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    and fuel for the cell, called ATP,
  • 2:31 - 2:35
    the chemical reaction gives off energy in the form of light.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    Once scientists figured out
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    how the firefly creates its luciferase and luciferin,
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    they used genetic engineering
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    to make this light-producing reaction
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    occur inside other living things that can't glow.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    For example, they inserted the genes,
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    or instructions, for a cell
  • 2:50 - 2:54
    to create firefly luciferase and luciferin into a tobacco plant.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    Once there, the tobacco plant followed the instructions
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    slipped into its DNA and lit up like a Christmas tree.
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    The beauty of bioluminescence,
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    unlike the light from the sun or an incandescent bulb,
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    is that it's not hot.
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    It takes place in a range of temperatures
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    that don't burn a living thing.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    And unlike a glow stick,
  • 3:13 - 3:16
    which fades out as the chemicals inside get used up,
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    bioluminescent reactions use replenishable resources.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    That's one reason engineers
  • 3:21 - 3:24
    are trying to develop bioluminescent trees.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
    Just think, if planted on the side of highways,
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    they could light the way, using only oxygen
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    and other freely available, clean resources to run.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    Talk about survival advantage!
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    That could help our planet live longer.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
