Recycling fashion: The town turning waste into clothes - BBC News
-
0:00 - 0:04Sophia Bettiza: Most of our clothes
will never get recycled. -
0:04 - 0:0999% will end up here,
dumped and burned in landfill. -
0:10 - 0:14MW: Our Earth at this point is not capable
of absorbing the huge amount of clothing -
0:14 - 0:16that is produced each year.
-
0:16 - 0:18SB: But what if all those wasted clothes
-
0:18 - 0:22could be saved and turned
into something else? -
0:23 - 0:26I've come to a town in Italy called Prato.
-
0:26 - 0:32This place has mastered a method
to transform old scraps into new clothes. -
0:32 - 0:34FT: This makes us feel proud.
-
0:34 - 0:36SB: What happens here is unique.
-
0:37 - 0:39There are hundreds of companies
in this small district -
0:39 - 0:43and each specializes
in one specific aspect of the process, -
0:44 - 0:47whether it's spinning,
weaving or designing. -
0:48 - 0:49And today, incredibly,
-
0:49 - 0:55this town says it processes 15%
of all recycled clothes in the world. -
0:57 - 0:58So this is your shirt.
-
0:58 - 1:02If it's too old for the charity shop,
it gets sent for recycling. -
1:02 - 1:06Here, it's sorted by colour,
torn apart, washed, -
1:07 - 1:11and then the new recycled material
is taken and transformed -
1:11 - 1:14to make new clothes with minimum waste.
-
1:16 - 1:17That was very quick.
-
1:18 - 1:20Let's go through the process again.
-
1:21 - 1:22You donate clothes.
-
1:23 - 1:26They arrive here
from lots of different countries. -
1:26 - 1:29All the garments
that can be sold second-hand -
1:29 - 1:32are taken to this company nearby.
-
1:33 - 1:36Here, not only are they
separated by colour, -
1:36 - 1:38but also by material.
-
1:39 - 1:41Think these used to be trousers!
-
1:41 - 1:44How many clothes do you recycle here?
-
1:45 - 1:47FT: About 25 tonnes every day.
-
1:48 - 1:50SB: The clothes are put in this.
-
1:50 - 1:52It's called a carbonizing machine -
-
1:52 - 1:55it eliminates impurities from the wool.
-
1:56 - 1:57Then, they go through this.
-
1:58 - 2:00It's like a giant washing machine.
-
2:01 - 2:04They're shredded, cleaned and dried.
-
2:05 - 2:06This is the final result -
-
2:07 - 2:13your old clothes have been transformed
into these fine, fluffy wool fibres. -
2:13 - 2:15So at the end of the process,
-
2:15 - 2:19this is what the new recycled
materials look like. -
2:19 - 2:23They're placed here
until a fashion brand buys them -
2:23 - 2:25and uses them to make clothes.
-
2:26 - 2:30Some people might say
that you are using trash to make clothes. -
2:30 - 2:33FB(Owner): This might have been
the case a few years ago. -
2:33 - 2:37The word "rubbish" was an insult.
-
2:37 - 2:40But now, many brands...
they buy my products because of it - -
2:40 - 2:45because they know that reusing resources
is going to save the planet. -
2:47 - 2:50SB: Recycling wool is great
for the environment. -
2:50 - 2:53Co2 emissions are more than halved
-
2:53 - 2:56compared to when clothes
are made from new material. -
2:57 - 3:00MW(FashionRevolution): We have
an immediate impact on animal welfare, -
3:00 - 3:03because you reduce the stress
that you have to put on the animals -
3:03 - 3:04to get the wool,
-
3:05 - 3:07almost complete elimination of dyes
-
3:07 - 3:10because the way the wool is recycled
is an assortment by colour. -
3:11 - 3:15SB: This is a method that's been
passed on from father to son. -
3:16 - 3:18MW: The culture in Prato
-
3:18 - 3:21is the kind of culture that we need
across the entire fashion industry -
3:21 - 3:24because it is based
on collaboration that are local, -
3:24 - 3:27but are capable of showing how,
-
3:27 - 3:30if these things are taken
into a national or global scale, -
3:30 - 3:32the entire industry could benefit.
-
3:33 - 3:36SB: The people of this town
were forced to recycle clothes -
3:37 - 3:39because they couldn't afford the new ones.
-
3:39 - 3:44Now their methods, which have been
honed over the past hundred years, -
3:44 - 3:48could offer a way forward
for a more sustainable fashion world. -
