    Today I want to talk
    about the meaning of words,

    how we define them
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    and how they, almost as revenge,
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    define us.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    The English language
    is a magnificent sponge.
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    I love the English language.
    I'm glad that I speak it.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
    I think you are all lucky
    to speak it, as well.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    But for all that, it has a lot of holes.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    In Greek, there's a word, "lachesism"
  • 0:53 - 0:57
    which is the hunger for disaster.
  • 0:57 - 1:01
    You know, when you see
    a thunderstorm on the horizon
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    and you just find yourself
    rooting for the storm.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    In Mandarin, they have a word "yù yī" --
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    I'm not pronouncing that correctly --
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    which means the longing
    to feel intensely again
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    the way you did when you were a kid.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    In Polish, they have a word "jouska"
  • 1:19 - 1:23
    which is the kind of
    hypothetical conversation
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    that you compulsively
    play out in your head.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    And finally, in German,
    of course in German,
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    they have a word called "Zielschmerz,"
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    which is the dread
    of getting what you want.
  • 1:36 - 1:41
    (Laughter)
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    Finally fulfilling a lifelong dream.
  • 1:44 - 1:48
    I'm German myself,
    so I know exactly what that feels like.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    Now, I'm not sure
    if I would use any of these words
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    as I go about my day,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    but I'm really glad they exist.
  • 1:54 - 1:58
    But the only reason they exist
    is because I made them up.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
    I am the author of "The Dictionary
    of Obscure Sorrows,"
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    which I've been writing
    for the last seven years.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    And the whole mission of the project
  • 2:09 - 2:14
    is to find holes
    in the language of emotion
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    and try to fill them
  • 2:15 - 2:19
    so that we have a way of talking
    about all those human peccadilloes
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    and quirks of the human condition
  • 2:21 - 2:25
    that we all feel
    but may not think to talk about
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    because we don't have the words to do it.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
    It started watching the end credits
    of "Saturday Night Live,"
  • 2:33 - 2:37
    and I was beset by the most
    beautiful and haunting melancholy.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    If you ever get a chance
    to stay up that late,
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    I would urge you to watch
    the end credits of SNL.
  • 2:44 - 2:49
    And so, I decided to try
    to define that emotion.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    And about halfway through this project,
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    I defined "sonder,"
  • 2:53 - 2:57
    the idea that we all think of ourselves
    as the main character
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    and everyone else is just extras.
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    But in reality,
    we're all the main character,
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    and you yourself are an extra
    in someone else's story.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    And so as soon as I published that,
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    I got a lot of response from people
  • 3:11 - 3:16
    saying "thank you for giving voice
    to something I had felt all my life
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    but there was no word for that."
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    So it made them feel less alone.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    That's the power of words,
  • 3:24 - 3:27
    to make us feel less alone.
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    And it was not long after that
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    that I started to notice sonder
  • 3:31 - 3:35
    being used earnestly
    in conversations online,
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    and not long after I actually noticed it,
  • 3:38 - 3:42
    I caught it next to me
    in an actual conversation in person.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    There is no stranger feeling
    than making up a word
  • 3:44 - 3:49
    and then seeing it
    take on a mind of its own.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    I don't have a word
    for that yet, but I will.
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    (Laughter)
  • 3:52 - 3:53
    I'm working on it.
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    I started to think
    about what makes words real,
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    because a lot of people ask me,
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    the most common thing
    I got from people is,
  • 4:02 - 4:05
    "Well, are these words made up?
    I don't really understand."
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    And I didn't really know what to tell them
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    because once sonder started to take off,
  • 4:09 - 4:12
    who am I to say what words
    are real and what aren't.
  • 4:13 - 4:17
    And so I sort of felt like Steve Jobs,
    who described his epiphany
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    as when he realized that most of us,
    as we go through the day,
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    we just try to avoid
    bouncing against the walls too much
  • 4:23 - 4:27
    and just sort of get on with things.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    But once you realize that people --
  • 4:31 - 4:35
    that this world was built
    by people no smarter than you,
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    then you can reach out
    and touch those walls
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    and even put your hand through them
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    and realize that you have
    the power to change it.
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    It's phenomenal.
  • 4:46 - 4:51
    So I think from there,
    that changed how I look at words
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    and what makes words real.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    And when people ask me,
    "Are these words real?"
  • 4:56 - 4:59
    I had a variety of answers
    that I tried out.
  • 4:59 - 5:01
    Some of them made sense.
    Some of them didn't,
  • 5:01 - 5:02
    but one of them I tried out was,
  • 5:02 - 5:06
    "Well, a word is real
    if you want it to be real."
  • 5:06 - 5:10
    The way that this path is real
    because people wanted it to be there.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    (Laughter)
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    It happens on college
    campuses all the time.
  • 5:14 - 5:15
    It's called a "desire path."
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    (Laughter)
  • 5:17 - 5:20
    And so, languages
    are a reflection of desire
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    something that they want to be there.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    And it may be the road less traveled,
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    but it will get there eventually.
  • 5:27 - 5:29
    But that's not really a satisfying answer,
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    so I gave up on that one.
  • 5:32 - 5:34
    But then I decided,
    what people are really asking
  • 5:34 - 5:37
    when they're asking if a word is real,
    they're really asking,
  • 5:37 - 5:42
    "Well, how many brains
    will this give me access to?"
  • 5:43 - 5:45
    Because I think that's
    a lot of how we look at language.
  • 5:45 - 5:48
    A word is essentially a key
  • 5:48 - 5:51
    that gets us into certain people's heads,
  • 5:51 - 5:54
    and if it gets us into one brain,
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    it's not really worth it,
  • 5:56 - 5:57
    not really worth knowing.
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    Two brains, eh, it depends on who it is.
  • 5:59 - 6:02
    A million brains, OK, now we're talking.
  • 6:02 - 6:09
    And so a real word is one that gets you
    access to as many brains as you can.
  • 6:09 - 6:12
    That's what makes it worth knowing.
  • 6:12 - 6:16
    Incidentally, the realest word of all
    by this measure is this.
  • 6:16 - 6:18
    [O.K.]
  • 6:18 - 6:19
    That's it.
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    The realest word we have.
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    That is the closest thing we have
    to a master key.
  • 6:23 - 6:26
    That's the most commonly
    understood word in the world,
  • 6:26 - 6:27
    no matter where you are.
  • 6:27 - 6:28
    The problem with that is,
  • 6:28 - 6:31
    no one seems to know
    what those two letters stand for.
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    (Laughter)
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    Which is kind of weird, right?
  • 6:35 - 6:39
    I mean, it could be a misspelling
    of "all correct," I guess,
  • 6:39 - 6:40
    or "old kinderhook."
  • 6:40 - 6:44
    No one really seems to know,
    but the fact that it doesn't matter
  • 6:44 - 6:47
    says something about
    how we add meaning to words.
  • 6:47 - 6:50
    The meaning is not
    in the words themselves.
  • 6:51 - 6:54
    We're the ones
    that pour ourselves into it.
  • 6:55 - 6:58
    And I think, when we're all searching
    for meaning in our lives,
  • 6:59 - 7:01
    and searching for the meaning of life,
  • 7:01 - 7:04
    I think words have
    something to do with that.
  • 7:05 - 7:08
    And I think if you're looking
    for the meaning of something,
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    the dictionary is a decent place to start.
  • 7:13 - 7:18
    I saw an interview with
    the religious scholar Reza Aslan.
  • 7:18 - 7:21
    He was describing a misunderstanding
  • 7:21 - 7:23
    that many people have about religion.
  • 7:24 - 7:27
    He said that what a religion is
  • 7:27 - 7:31
    is basically a set of
    symbols and metaphors
  • 7:31 - 7:33
    that people pour themselves into
  • 7:33 - 7:36
    to try to express something inexpressible.
  • 7:36 - 7:39
    Religion is essentially just a language.
  • 7:39 - 7:40
    That's all it is.
  • 7:40 - 7:43
    It's a container for whatever
    meanings we bring to it.
  • 7:44 - 7:46
    And that got me thinking ...
  • 7:47 - 7:49
    What if language was a kind of religion.
  • 7:51 - 7:54
    That would mean that this
    is basically our holy book.
  • 7:56 - 7:58
    And if you think of the creation story,
  • 7:58 - 8:01
    it's really more of a definition story.
  • 8:02 - 8:06
    In the beginning, there was chaos
    upon the waters of the Earth
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    and then God separated
    the land from the sea,
  • 8:08 - 8:11
    the fish from the birds, man from woman,
  • 8:11 - 8:13
    the eternal from the ephemeral.
  • 8:13 - 8:15
    That's all in these pages.
  • 8:15 - 8:17
    That's what a definition is.
  • 8:17 - 8:21
    And so, if we're looking
    for meaning in the world,
  • 8:22 - 8:24
    this is our faith, this is our holy book.
  • 8:25 - 8:27
    Because the reality is,
  • 8:27 - 8:29
    and the point of this holy book,
  • 8:29 - 8:31
    and the point of, I think, all holy books,
  • 8:31 - 8:34
    is that it brings a sense of order
  • 8:34 - 8:36
    to a very chaotic universe.
  • 8:37 - 8:39
    Our view of things is so limited
  • 8:39 - 8:45
    and the universe is so complicated
  • 8:45 - 8:48
    that we have to come up
    with patterns and shorthands
  • 8:48 - 8:50
    and try to figure out
    a way to interpret it
  • 8:50 - 8:52
    and be able to get on with our day.
  • 8:55 - 8:57
    And that's why we need words to do that,
  • 8:57 - 8:59
    to give meaning to our lives.
  • 8:59 - 9:00
    But even more than that,
  • 9:00 - 9:04
    we need words to contain us,
    to define ourselves.
  • 9:04 - 9:07
    And that is, I think, a lot
    of how we use words right now,
  • 9:07 - 9:13
    we're all sort of begging
    to be defined, in certain ways.
  • 9:13 - 9:16
    And I think especially now,
    with technology and globalization,
  • 9:16 - 9:18
    it's so easy to get lost in the fog.
  • 9:18 - 9:21
    Each of us is undefined, in a way,
  • 9:21 - 9:23
    and the world is becoming
    ever more undefined.
  • 9:24 - 9:28
    And so, I think a lot
    of the structures that we look to
  • 9:28 - 9:30
    to try to contain ourselves
  • 9:30 - 9:31
    look like this.
  • 9:34 - 9:36
    Both in the sense
    of "pound" and "hashtag."
  • 9:36 - 9:38
    (Laughter)
  • 9:38 - 9:40
    It's trying to box ourselves in
    in certain ways
  • 9:40 - 9:45
    and say, to look for certain entries
    and certain categories
  • 9:45 - 9:47
    and say, "Yes, that's me."
  • 9:47 - 9:49
    What we do is look at other people
  • 9:49 - 9:51
    and say, "You're like me ...
  • 9:51 - 9:54
    And so, we are an 'us'."
  • 9:55 - 9:57
    And that gives us meaning.
  • 9:57 - 9:59
    That's just a way of borrowing meaning.
  • 9:59 - 10:05
    The problem is that a lot of that
    depends on institutions
  • 10:06 - 10:08
    and there are so many of us now,
  • 10:08 - 10:11
    and life is now so complicated and chaotic
  • 10:11 - 10:14
    that we have to wall ourselves off.
  • 10:14 - 10:17
    We're becoming
    fundamentalists in our faith.
  • 10:17 - 10:18
    Literalists.
  • 10:19 - 10:22
    Because we all feel these categories
    start to fall apart.
  • 10:22 - 10:25
    Have you noticed how many
    of our conversations now
  • 10:25 - 10:28
    are about the definitions of words?
  • 10:28 - 10:32
    I don't know how many times I've seen
    a conversation on the Huffington Post
  • 10:32 - 10:34
    that starts "Are you a feminist?"
  • 10:35 - 10:37
    "What does 'feminist' mean?"
  • 10:37 - 10:40
    "Who on this debate stage
    is the real progressive?"
  • 10:40 - 10:42
    "What does 'socialist' mean?"
  • 10:42 - 10:43
    "Who is a 'fascist'?"
  • 10:45 - 10:46
    "Who is a 'woman'?"
  • 10:47 - 10:48
    Caitlyn Jenner.
  • 10:48 - 10:50
    "Who is 'black'?" Rachel Dolezal.
  • 10:51 - 10:54
    These are the kind of conversations
    we have all the time,
  • 10:54 - 10:56
    but they're not really about meaning.
  • 10:56 - 10:58
    They're about how we package the world.
  • 10:59 - 11:01
    And so, I think the end result
  • 11:01 - 11:05
    is that we end up
    looking something like this,
  • 11:05 - 11:07
    where we allow words to define us.
  • 11:08 - 11:11
    We forget that all words are made up.
  • 11:11 - 11:15
    They're just models of how the world
    could be or should be,
  • 11:15 - 11:19
    and so, we're all withdrawing
    in our own communities of concern,
  • 11:19 - 11:21
    speaking in our own languages
  • 11:22 - 11:26
    when in fact, the world is more than that.
  • 11:27 - 11:29
    I think all of us feel
  • 11:29 - 11:33
    that the categories that we use
    to give our lives meaning
  • 11:33 - 11:36
    don't necessarily fit us all that well.
  • 11:37 - 11:40
    And so, we have to explain to people that,
  • 11:40 - 11:42
    that, "Yes, I subscribe to this,
  • 11:42 - 11:44
    but that doesn't define me.
  • 11:45 - 11:47
    We have to keep doing this over and over,
  • 11:47 - 11:52
    negotiating how we fit
    into the categories that we have.
  • 11:54 - 11:56
    I think a lot of us feel boxed in
  • 11:57 - 11:59
    by how we use these words.
  • 11:59 - 12:01
    We forget that words are made up.
  • 12:01 - 12:04
    It's not just my words.
    All words are made up,
  • 12:04 - 12:06
    but not all of them mean something.
  • 12:07 - 12:10
    And so I think what I'd like to --
  • 12:12 - 12:15
    The image I have of where we are today,
  • 12:15 - 12:17
    I think of Anne Frank.
  • 12:18 - 12:22
    Because she was in her little
    apartment in Amsterdam
  • 12:22 - 12:24
    and in a time when everyone around her
  • 12:24 - 12:26
    was trying to organize humanity
  • 12:26 - 12:30
    in a way that made sense
    with clean lines and brutal efficiency,
  • 12:30 - 12:33
    she was on the inside,
    organizing her own humanity.
  • 12:34 - 12:37
    I think there's something
    really beautiful about that,
  • 12:37 - 12:40
    because a lot of it was
    about her own confusion
  • 12:40 - 12:42
    and her own vulnerability.
  • 12:42 - 12:46
    And I think that's why we need
    a new kind of language
  • 12:46 - 12:48
    that looks a little more like this.
  • 12:48 - 12:51
    Because each of us could be anyone.
  • 12:51 - 12:54
    At any given time,
    we are not just one person,
  • 12:54 - 12:55
    we are many people at once.
  • 12:56 - 13:01
    And so, we have to get more in line
    with how the world actually is,
  • 13:01 - 13:05
    not to get too caught up in the models
    that we've imposed on the world.
  • 13:07 - 13:11
    GPS devices tend to warn you,
  • 13:11 - 13:15
    reminding you that the map you see
    is not the real world,
  • 13:15 - 13:16
    so don't run into a lake.
  • 13:17 - 13:18
    (Laughter)
  • 13:19 - 13:21
    And I think we need the same reminder,
  • 13:21 - 13:23
    that the map is not the real world
  • 13:23 - 13:25
    and so if we run into these problems,
  • 13:27 - 13:29
    we have an option
    to define things for ourself;
  • 13:29 - 13:34
    we don't necessarily
    just have to borrow the meanings
  • 13:34 - 13:36
    that give meaning to our lives.
  • 13:37 - 13:38
    It is possible --
  • 13:38 - 13:41
    and I know this because
    I've been doing it the last seven years --
  • 13:41 - 13:43
    to come up with new metaphors
  • 13:43 - 13:45
    that make the invisible visible.
  • 13:46 - 13:48
    There's something
    really beautiful about that.
  • 13:49 - 13:53
    And I think if we got
    in a better relationship with chaos,
  • 13:54 - 13:59
    if we stopped trying to oversimplify
  • 13:59 - 14:03
    the interior storm
    that all of us are facing
  • 14:03 - 14:06
    and the confusion and the vulnerability,
  • 14:06 - 14:09
    and how complicated the world really is,
  • 14:09 - 14:12
    then we could feel
    a little more comfortable in our skin
  • 14:12 - 14:14
    and we wouldn't have to withdraw
  • 14:14 - 14:16
    within the categories
    that we allow to define us.
  • 14:17 - 14:19
    And we could take the power
    back from our words
  • 14:19 - 14:21
    and define them.
  • 14:21 - 14:24
    I think that's a little more
    healthy relationship.
  • 14:24 - 14:28
    I don't know how many conversations
    would be benefited by someone --
  • 14:28 - 14:30
    Like the game Catch Phrase,
  • 14:31 - 14:34
    where you're given
    the actual topic you're talking about,
  • 14:34 - 14:37
    so the challenge is,
    "Don't say that word."
  • 14:37 - 14:40
    I think if we all did that,
    we would be a little better off.
  • 14:41 - 14:44
    Because it would allow
    certain lexical fluidity
  • 14:44 - 14:46
    that I think we're losing now.
  • 14:46 - 14:50
    We're all just sort of
    trapped in our own lexicons
  • 14:50 - 14:55
    that don't necessarily correlate
    with people who aren't already like us,
  • 14:55 - 15:00
    and so I think I feel us drifting apart
    a little more every year,
  • 15:00 - 15:02
    the more seriously we take words.
  • 15:04 - 15:07
    Because remember, words are not real.
  • 15:08 - 15:10
    They don't have meaning. We do.
  • 15:10 - 15:12
    I think it's important to remember that.
  • 15:12 - 15:16
    And if we took some sense
    of creativity and authorship
  • 15:16 - 15:19
    in inventing who we are,
  • 15:19 - 15:20
    that is possible.
  • 15:20 - 15:26
    It is possible to try to reach
    for richer metaphors.
  • 15:26 - 15:28
    This world has never been as complicated,
  • 15:28 - 15:31
    and our lives have never been
    more complicated than they are right now.
  • 15:31 - 15:37
    And so, instead of reaching
    for the nearest standardized word,
  • 15:37 - 15:39
    or just begging to be
    diagnosed with something,
  • 15:39 - 15:42
    it is worth actually being present,
  • 15:42 - 15:44
    in sadness, for example.
  • 15:44 - 15:46
    In the chaos of emotion.
  • 15:47 - 15:48
    I think that's worth doing.
  • 15:48 - 15:51
    I think we need new lenses
  • 15:51 - 15:55
    to help contextualize the chaos
    that we face all the time.
  • 15:55 - 15:57
    And if we do that,
  • 15:57 - 16:01
    if each of us is willing
    to actually define who it is we are
  • 16:01 - 16:04
    with some sense of creativity,
  • 16:04 - 16:06
    I think the world could look
    a little more like this.
  • 16:07 - 16:09
    Really messy.
  • 16:09 - 16:11
    I think we are really messy people
  • 16:11 - 16:13
    and the world is a really messy world.
  • 16:14 - 16:16
    And I think this would not be so bad,
  • 16:16 - 16:18
    us pouring out of these institutions,
  • 16:18 - 16:20
    which are weakening all the time,
  • 16:20 - 16:22
    and meeting each other as we are,
  • 16:22 - 16:24
    in all our vulnerability,
  • 16:24 - 16:27
    wearing our emotions on our sleeves.
  • 16:28 - 16:29
    And I think,
  • 16:30 - 16:31
    as messy as it is,
  • 16:33 - 16:36
    it would be a little more
    fulfilling to do that.
  • 16:37 - 16:40
    And I'd like to leave you with a reading
  • 16:41 - 16:43
    from one of my favorite philosophers,
  • 16:43 - 16:46
    Bill Watterson, who created
    "Calvin and Hobbes."
  • 16:46 - 16:47
    He said,
  • 16:48 - 16:52
    "Creating a life that reflects
    your values and satisfies your soul
  • 16:52 - 16:53
    is a rare achievement.
  • 16:53 - 16:56
    To invent your own life's meaning
  • 16:56 - 16:57
    is not easy,
  • 16:58 - 16:59
    but it is still allowed,
  • 16:59 - 17:02
    and I think you'll be
    happier for the trouble."
