Let's Get Naked: Sheila Kelley at TEDxAmericanRiviera
-
0:10 - 1:51(Music)
-
1:51 - 1:55(Applause)
-
1:55 - 2:01Thank you.
-
2:01 - 2:05Wow, that was fun.
-
2:05 - 2:08Ok, let's get naked!
(Laughter) -
2:08 - 2:09Ready, set, strip!
-
2:09 - 2:11No, teasing, I'm joking!
-
2:11 - 2:14The kind of naked that I'm referring to
-
2:14 - 2:18is the naked that makes you
squirm on the inside. -
2:18 - 2:21It's naked of the heart.
-
2:21 - 2:25Naked to the soul.
Naked to the truth, -
2:25 - 2:28which is what I want to share
with you today as the truth -
2:28 - 2:31about men, women
and the Erotic Creature. -
2:31 - 2:35But it's going to require some stripping
on both of our parts. -
2:35 - 2:38I need you to strip away
all those false pretenses -
2:38 - 2:40as ideas you have about the female body
-
2:40 - 2:43and I need you to strip your minds wide open.
-
2:43 - 2:47So this is my laboratory
-
2:47 - 2:49where I've spent the last 12 years
guiding women -
2:49 - 2:54toward awakening their
feminine body movement -
2:54 - 2:56which awakens their feminine nature
-
2:56 - 3:00which awakens what I call
their Erotic Creature. -
3:00 - 3:02Every woman on the planet
has an Erotic Creature. -
3:02 - 3:06She's the primal feminine body.
-
3:06 - 3:10She's the wild, untamed,
sexual alter ego -
3:10 - 3:13that lives deep within.
-
3:13 - 3:17Very often she's buried
under furrowed brows, -
3:17 - 3:20tensed frozen bodies,
judgmental thoughts and fear, -
3:20 - 3:22but she is there.
-
3:22 - 3:24And when you awaken her
-
3:24 - 3:27and you integrate her into your being,
-
3:27 - 3:29it sends you into a place of wholeness
-
3:29 - 3:33and this wholeness
of the feminine is capable -
3:33 - 3:37of elevating every living creature
within its reach. -
3:37 - 3:39Let's talk for one second
about -- oh, there it is, -
3:39 - 3:42the Erotic Creature --
the Unthinkable. -
3:42 - 3:46What if I tell you that the pole
that I was just dancing on -
3:46 - 3:48is a symbol for the next and fourth wave
-
3:48 - 3:51of the feminist movement?
-
3:51 - 3:55I know, right!?
-
3:55 - 4:00The personal reclamation of the female body
and the sexuality within. -
4:00 - 4:02It's crazy, right?
-
4:02 - 4:04A stripper pole representing
the feminist movement -- -
4:04 - 4:08there's got to be some people
rolling over in their graves! Heros of mine! -
4:08 - 4:09But I'm going to tell you
about this wild journey -
4:09 - 4:11I took over the last 23 years
that brought me -
4:11 - 4:14to this place of clarity and conviction.
-
4:14 - 4:16I'll set the scene for you.
-
4:16 - 4:211989, La Cienega Boulevard
Star Strip Gentleman's Club. -
4:21 - 4:23The first time I went into a strip club
-
4:23 - 4:26I was a young actress,
I was helping a friend with a writing project -
4:26 - 4:29and I was very unhappy
that I had to go on to this place -
4:29 - 4:32that I felt subjugated and objectified women.
-
4:32 - 4:36But once inside I fell in love with
-
4:36 - 4:38the movement of some of the dancers,
-
4:38 - 4:41Their bodies undulated and they teased
-
4:41 - 4:45and they were provocative and sexual,
and so feminine. -
4:45 - 4:49And I was desperate to learn how to do it.
-
4:49 - 4:52But I didn't want to be
a professional stripper. -
4:52 - 4:55Not that there's anything wrong with that!
-
4:55 - 4:58What I did is
-
4:58 - 5:00I wrote-produced a film
-
5:00 - 5:03where I actually got to play a stripper.
-
5:03 - 5:05And in the movie I needed to create a character
-
5:05 - 5:08who lived and moved through her sexuality.
-
5:08 - 5:10And I thought this is going to be fun.
-
5:10 - 5:13So I, first day of rehearsal, put on this outfit
-
5:13 - 5:15that I thought would communicate
-
5:15 - 5:18my sexy stripper-self into the world,
-
5:18 - 5:22please don't laugh or you can laugh!
(Laughter) -
5:22 - 5:24So I got on stage in this outfit
-
5:24 - 5:27and the music comes on
and my body just goes: -
5:27 - 5:31uh-uh -- uh-uh -- Ain't moving!
And she froze! -
5:31 - 5:34Now I was a dance major,
New York University, -
5:34 - 5:36I'm a professionally trained ballerina,
-
5:36 - 5:37I should know how to do this.
-
5:37 - 5:40But my body was like,
"I am not having anything of it!" -
5:40 - 5:42And I started to force her to kind of --
-
5:42 - 5:44bop from side to side,
-
5:44 - 5:47trying to be really sexy,
it was so pathetic, -
5:47 - 5:50it was totally not sexy!
-
5:50 - 5:52And what I was realizing is that
-
5:52 - 5:54nowhere in my being did I know
-
5:54 - 5:57how to embody my sexuality
in my everyday life. -
5:57 - 6:00It wasn't that I didn't have sexuality.
I for myself though it was fine. -
6:00 - 6:04It was bringing my sexuality
into my everyday life. -
6:04 - 6:08I was faltering at being overtly feminine,
like -- wow, -
6:08 - 6:11the body, which is a brilliantly
intuitive creature, speaks. -
6:11 - 6:13And what my body was saying is:
-
6:13 - 6:18"You can clearly see,
is you have no idea who I am." -
6:18 - 6:20And she was completely right.
-
6:20 - 6:22So I knew something was missing
inside of me. -
6:22 - 6:27I spent the next 4 months,
as we developed the film, -
6:27 - 6:29hunting for who I was
as a sexually embodied creature. -
6:29 - 6:32I went to the strip clubs,
I met dancers, -
6:32 - 6:34I dissected the movement
and I learned it, -
6:34 - 6:38and what I found inside of myself
I did not expect. -
6:38 - 6:41I found its dark, soulful,
emotional sexuality -
6:41 - 6:45that gave me a confidence
in my body and my femininity -
6:45 - 6:46that I'd never had before.
-
6:46 - 6:49What awoke in me
was my Erotic Creature. -
6:49 - 6:52All this is amazing,
but it gets so much better, -
6:52 - 6:56because not only did I awaken
that side of myself -
6:56 - 6:59but this side of myself
started changing everything -
6:59 - 7:01on the home front.
-
7:01 - 7:05My marriage went from
"Eh" to "Oh my God!" -
7:05 - 7:07It's stayed there for 23 years.
-
7:07 - 7:09I became a happier mother to my children,
-
7:09 - 7:13I became a more complete woman
on to myself. -
7:13 - 7:15And I had to share this with other women.
-
7:15 - 7:17I was like, 'You've got -- this is it,
-
7:17 - 7:18this is the Holy Grail of empowerment!'
-
7:18 - 7:20and they're like, 'Ok.'
-
7:20 - 7:23I developed this movement called
-
7:23 - 7:25'S Factor,' and I started teaching it
-
7:25 - 7:27to fellow pre-school moms
and women in the neighbourhood -
7:27 - 7:32and they too started releasing their sexuality
-
7:32 - 7:36into their everyday lives
and into their bodies and -- -
7:36 - 7:38the same changes that I'd had in my life
-
7:38 - 7:40they were having in theirs.
-
7:40 - 7:42Happier relationships,
happier children, -
7:42 - 7:45happier women,
it caught on like wild fire. -
7:45 - 7:48The next thing I know I am on Oprah's.
-
7:48 - 7:51We become --
our effort becomes international news. -
7:51 - 7:55I'm inundated with e-mails
from all over the globe. -
7:55 - 8:00Apparently, the desire to be whole --
-
8:00 - 8:02it crosses not only geographic boundaries
-
8:02 - 8:05but political and cultural boundaries as well.
-
8:05 - 8:07I had tapped in a world-wide artery
-
8:07 - 8:11of women all missing
the same something I had been missing. -
8:11 - 8:14The Erotic creature was asleep globally.
But how was that possible? -
8:14 - 8:17I couldn't understand
how could the woman from Saudi Arabia, -
8:17 - 8:21the woman from Beijing, the woman
from Buenos Aires and me in Los Angeles, -
8:21 - 8:24how could we all be missing the same thing?
I needed to understand this. -
8:24 - 8:27And I call it the 'Yin effect.'
-
8:27 - 8:31Think of each person, male or female,
having within the potential -
8:31 - 8:34of Yin-feminine and Yang-masculine energy,
-
8:34 - 8:38we live in a world that cuts out
a piece of Yin in all of us. -
8:38 - 8:41And if you jump into that Yin,
you'll see that -
8:41 - 8:45it's the physicality and sexuality
of the feminine body that's shut down. -
8:45 - 8:47And the more women I talked to,
the more I learned. -
8:47 - 8:49And what I learned is that
the shutting down of the Yin -
8:49 - 8:52starts with the first offense.
-
8:52 - 8:55The first offense is
the first time anyone or anything -
8:55 - 9:00brings negative attention,
judgment or shame to your body. -
9:00 - 9:03So my first offense happened
when I was 7 -
9:03 - 9:07and this is the picture of what
a 7-year-old little girl's body looks like -
9:07 - 9:10just for you to refer to throughout the story --
this is my daughter. -
9:10 - 9:13I was hanging out with my best friends,
Brian and Donald Doyle, -
9:13 - 9:16they were 7 and 8 respectively,
we were hanging out -
9:16 - 9:18in the backyard, it was summer,
it was really hot, -
9:18 - 9:20we were playing,
we decided to take a break -
9:20 - 9:23and we went to cool down,
so we all took our tops off and -
9:23 - 9:28we laid back in the grass, arms over the head,
it was an awesome day, -
9:28 - 9:30the air was cooling my chest,
-
9:30 - 9:32it was a beautiful, innocent day.
-
9:32 - 9:34And all of a sudden the upstairs window
of their house was flying open -
9:34 - 9:37and Mrs Doyle stuck her head out
-
9:37 - 9:39and she screamed
in the most piercing voice, -
9:39 - 9:43'Sheila Kelley! You naughty little girl!
-
9:43 - 9:51You put your top on immediately, you ought
to be ashamed of yourself and go home.' -
9:51 - 9:54My shoulders started
to pinch up towards my ears, -
9:54 - 9:57my chest caved-in
with this new-found emotion of shame, -
9:57 - 10:01I couldn't breathe,
it was the moment I began -
10:01 - 10:04to separate from my female body.
-
10:04 - 10:07Mrs hadn't yelled at her boys
but she yelled at me -
10:07 - 10:09but we did the same thing.
-
10:09 - 10:13What I learned that day is
it's safe and good -
10:13 - 10:15to be in a male body,
and it's not safe, -
10:15 - 10:18it's dangerous
to be in a female body. -
10:18 - 10:20Mrs Doyle didn't hate me,
-
10:20 - 10:22she was trying to curb
a sexuality that scared her, -
10:22 - 10:24that didn't even exist yet.
-
10:24 - 10:25She thought she had
the right to tell me what -
10:25 - 10:28I could and couldn't do with my body.
-
10:28 - 10:31These kind of stories play out
every single day all over the globe. -
10:31 - 10:35We are stealing the light and the life
-
10:35 - 10:39from these creatures,
these beautiful feminine creatures. -
10:39 - 10:42Every single woman you know
-
10:42 - 10:44has had a first offense,
whether she's aware of it or not. -
10:44 - 10:48And she's had subsequent offenses
every day of her life, offenses like -
10:48 - 10:51'keep your knees together',
'don't move like that', -
10:51 - 10:54'she's a slut',
'you look like a whore'. -
10:54 - 10:57These offenses eat away
at the emotional boundary -
10:57 - 10:59and the ego of the body
until you do not know -
10:59 - 11:01where your body begins
and where your body ends. -
11:01 - 11:05You think anyone, anytime,
anywhere can tell you -
11:05 - 11:08what you can
and cannot do in your body -
11:08 - 11:10and the only choice you have
is to shut it down. -
11:10 - 11:12So let's understand these offenses
a little better -
11:12 - 11:16'cause they're tricky
and you can't always tell they're offenses. -
11:16 - 11:19And there's a spectrum of them
and they're global -
11:19 - 11:21and they range in noticeability.
-
11:21 - 11:24If some of these pictures are difficult --
please avert your eyes. -
11:24 - 11:27They range from barbaric,
such as the stoning to death of a woman -
11:27 - 11:29who expresses her sexuality.
-
11:29 - 11:36Or brutal, the creating
of a human chastity belt made of flash. -
11:36 - 11:41Or overt, the mandatory veiling
of the female body. -
11:41 - 11:44To subtle controls,
things like offensive advertising -
11:44 - 11:46that eats away
your integrity of your body. -
11:46 - 11:51To subliminal controls,
the infantile global uproar -
11:51 - 11:54over a pair of royal nipples.
-
11:54 - 11:59Now really, honestly, I just don't know
which pair of nipples were so offensive! -
11:59 - 12:01But that's another talk!
-
12:01 - 12:03So I wanna switch
the table on you for a second. -
12:03 - 12:07Do you know
who I find incredibly attractive -
12:07 - 12:08and I think if I saw his bare nipples
-
12:08 - 12:12I would be so sexually aroused
that I couldn't control myself? -
12:12 - 12:15Daniel Craig.
I don't even look over there -
12:15 - 12:22because -- I kind of think Daniel Craig
should cover his nipples, too! -
12:22 - 12:28(Laughter) (Applause)
-
12:28 - 12:30I know, I know,
it's absurd, but is it? -
12:30 - 12:36We are laughing at this
but we are doing this to the female body. -
12:36 - 12:39Globally.
-
12:39 - 12:42What each and every one of these
offenses have in common -
12:42 - 12:46is the desire -- their end-goal is to control
-
12:46 - 12:48and limit the female body and sexuality,
-
12:48 - 12:51to control the clitoris,
to control the vagina, -
12:51 - 12:54to control the uterus,
to control all of it. -
12:54 - 12:58We don't want to think
that atrocities like acid-burnings -
12:58 - 13:00for turning down a marriage proposal
-
13:00 - 13:03are related to atrocities like
-
13:03 - 13:06domestic abuse for turning down
a marriage proposal. -
13:06 - 13:08But as you can see
they're the exact same thing -
13:08 - 13:11they're just using different tactics of control
-
13:11 - 13:14in different degrees.
-
13:14 - 13:17And when you hear repeatedly
-
13:17 - 13:20that your body is obscene or indecent
-
13:20 - 13:23you begin to internalize it,
and you start to self-control -
13:23 - 13:25and you start to try and hide your body,
-
13:25 - 13:32you try and hide your sexuality
in unhealthy eating habits, -
13:32 - 13:34or you hide in skin and bones,
-
13:34 - 13:38you'll do anything you can to hide.
-
13:38 - 13:41Or you start to cut.
-
13:41 - 13:45Or you try to become
somebody else's ideal of perfection. -
13:45 - 13:49Or you'll mini-man yourself up
so that you can be taken more seriously -
13:49 - 13:52in a world that values
all that is masculine. -
13:52 - 13:55Or you just live where 80% of the women
in America live -
13:55 - 13:57which is where something is missing
-
13:57 - 13:59and you have no idea what it is.
-
13:59 - 14:06What we have done to the ego
of the female body is -- -
14:06 - 14:08it's horrific.
-
14:08 - 14:11We have squandered and abused
-
14:11 - 14:13one of the sweetest, most vulnerable,
-
14:13 - 14:15most adorable creatures on the planet,
-
14:15 - 14:19and we -- all of us --
we are all paying the price, -
14:19 - 14:22because if you think
women are the only one scarred -
14:22 - 14:24in the relationship to their body,
-
14:24 - 14:27think about this:
what the Doyle boys learned -
14:27 - 14:28on the day of my first offense
-
14:28 - 14:29was exactly what I learned.
-
14:29 - 14:33They learned that their body
was more valuable than my body. -
14:33 - 14:36They learned that if their mother
could tell me -
14:36 - 14:39what I could and couldn't do in my body
-
14:39 - 14:41then maybe someday they could, too.
-
14:41 - 14:47Men too are scarred in relationship
to the feminine body through these offenses. -
14:47 - 14:50In a UCLA study of normal college students
-
14:50 - 14:53over 50% of the young men said
they would rape a woman -
14:53 - 14:57if they knew there was no punishment.
-
14:57 - 15:00For the majority of men
the most arousing fantasy -
15:00 - 15:01was the rape of a young woman
-
15:01 - 15:06where she experienced
both orgasm and pain. -
15:06 - 15:09Right? Kind of sobering.
-
15:09 - 15:14There was a time
when the female body was worshiped, -
15:14 - 15:16not just for her life-giving ability,
-
15:16 - 15:21but for her heightened senses,
her emotional acuity, -
15:21 - 15:24her brilliant intuition
and her dance of the fertility. -
15:24 - 15:29And this dance took place
at night when the women -- -
15:29 - 15:31and only the women --
would gather over the fields -
15:31 - 15:34and they would do --
they would undulate their pelvises -
15:34 - 15:40over the crops to fertilize the soil,
to feed the village. -
15:40 - 15:43That's the true origin
of what we know as -
15:43 - 15:45'fertility dance',
which became erotic dance, -
15:45 - 15:48which became what we know today
as strip-tease and pole-dancing. -
15:48 - 15:52It was a celebration
of the feminine body. -
15:52 - 15:58It began as a dance of life.
The great mythologist -
15:58 - 16:01and philosopher
Joseph Campbell wrote, -
16:01 - 16:05'Woman is life and Man is the protector of life.
-
16:05 - 16:08The male's job is to protect the women.'
-
16:08 - 16:10Somehow we have --
-
16:10 - 16:13the way we've learned
how to protect has become perverted. -
16:13 - 16:17We are protecting
by dousing the flame of the feminine. -
16:17 - 16:21We are serving by controlling
the body of the feminine -
16:21 - 16:24instead of doing what we have to do
and that is -
16:24 - 16:28to turn our masculine energy out and face
-
16:28 - 16:31any on-coming threat
so that the feminine -
16:31 - 16:37can blossom and grow
and radiate and be life. -
16:37 - 16:39The next wave
of the feminist movement is actually -- -
16:39 - 16:42it's a human movement
and it includes all of us -
16:42 - 16:44and it is the reclamation of the beauty
-
16:44 - 16:48and the genius of both
the masculine and the feminine. -
16:48 - 16:52And it all begins with the awakening
of the Erotic Creature in every woman -
16:52 - 16:56because when a woman steps into
her power in her body -
16:56 - 17:02she calls every single masculine
into his greatest power. -
17:02 - 17:03When she gets stronger
he gets stronger. -
17:03 - 17:06When we as a culture diminish her
-
17:06 - 17:11we are diminishing our culture.
-
17:11 - 17:14The female-male complement can exist
-
17:14 - 17:15and only when we cultivate it
-
17:15 - 17:17are we really going to live up
to the potential -- -
17:17 - 17:21the true potential of ourselves
individually and collectively. -
17:21 - 17:24This is my guy.
We cultivate every single day, -
17:24 - 17:26it's not perfect,
there are ups and downs, -
17:26 - 17:32but we dance the dance
of empowering one another. -
17:32 - 17:36Now here I am totally naked.
-
17:36 - 17:41If we all strip bare every day
-
17:41 - 17:45and expose our deepest truth,
-
17:45 - 17:48we can live naked in our passion,
-
17:48 - 17:51naked in our power,
naked in ourselves, -
17:51 - 17:53naked in the moment.
-
17:53 - 17:56I reclaimed my body after a lifetime of
-
17:56 - 17:59self-criticism brought on
by a society that -
17:59 - 18:04curbed her enthusiasm for life,
and in doing so -
18:04 - 18:08I have become, as Charles Dickens
so beautifully wrote, -
18:08 - 18:12'the hero of my own life'.
So the choice is yours. -
18:12 - 18:16Do you dare to become
the heroes of your lives -
18:16 - 18:19and reclaim your essence?
-
18:19 - 18:22Do you dare to live naked?
-
18:22 - 18:24So when you walk out of this talk,
-
18:24 - 18:25when you leave this talk, women,
-
18:25 - 18:29step into the grandeur,
the beauty, the gorgeousness -
18:29 - 18:33the sway, the curve,
the power, the fire of your body, -
18:33 - 18:36of your spirit, of your emotions.
-
18:36 - 18:38I want you to undulate your spine
-
18:38 - 18:40and just rock your body, sway it, move it,
-
18:40 - 18:42stretch it, reach your arms up,
-
18:42 - 18:44you can do it right now if you want to.
-
18:44 - 18:49I want you to go out and throw a hip-circle
in the middle of the grocery store! -
18:49 - 18:51Just for the fun of it!
-
18:51 - 18:54I want you to spread
your radiance with a smile -
18:54 - 18:56like right into the eyes of a stranger.
-
18:56 - 18:59And I'm going to feed you
and you're going to feed me. -
18:59 - 19:05And men, step into the magnificence
of the masculine creature that you are. -
19:05 - 19:09Create a space of safety
for the feminine to thrive. -
19:09 - 19:11Serve her, protect her, face out and
-
19:11 - 19:14hold her in your gaze and elevate her.
-
19:14 - 19:18Because when you elevate her
-
19:18 - 19:21you will behold in front of you
-
19:21 - 19:25the eternal and the sacred feminine.
-
19:25 - 19:26She's here right this minute,
-
19:26 - 19:28she is in front of you,
she's next to you, -
19:28 - 19:31she's behind you,
she is every woman, -
19:31 - 19:32she is the swoop of the neck,
-
19:32 - 19:36and the turn of an ankle,
and the curve up the lower back, -
19:36 - 19:38and she's the deep emotional heart,
-
19:38 - 19:42she is the wise intuitive soul,
-
19:42 - 19:45and when you see her,
when you awaken her -
19:45 - 19:47when you behold her
-- oh my God -- -
19:47 - 19:50whether you are a man,
a woman or a child, -
19:50 - 19:55you will be filled up,
split open into your bliss -
19:55 - 20:00because that is the power
of the feminine. -
20:00 - 20:01And one more thing.
-
20:01 - 20:03Women --
-
20:03 - 20:06when you walk into a room,
-
20:06 - 20:09remember your breasts
should enter 5 minutes before you -
20:09 - 20:13and your glories ass should leave
5 minutes after you're gone! -
20:13 - 20:15Thank you very much!
-
20:15 - 20:23(Applause and cheers)
-
20:23 - 20:26Thank you.
(Applause)

- Let's Get Naked: Sheila Kelley at TEDxAmericanRiviera
- Description:
-
There exists in every woman an Erotic Creature. When Sheila Kelley discovered this sleeping giant, her life changed irrevocably. She had stumbled upon what women were missing and launched it into a worldwide sensation, ushering in the 4th wave of feminism by teaching women to own their sexuality. Let's Get Naked is about exposing the truth and the Erotic Creature, both of which rest just beneath the surface.
